That sucks. I was looking forward to seeing what I could do at higher levels. Anyone interested in continuing?

Hard to say. Putting a 7 1/2 ft troll in a 10 ft hole might have just delayed him a round to climb out. Although I do think I should have attacked your wolf like I did the troll. The bigger problem has been the bombs and tripping. It has made me want to try an bomber alchemist and a tripping fighter type though.

Dwarf Fighter 3 HP -4/32; AC 20; T 12; FF 18; F +5; R +2; W +2; CMB +7; CMD 18; Speed 20ft; Init +1; Perc +4 TPK

With Dolgrym starting the fight with only 2 hp and the GM hitting 80% of the time, including twice while blinded, I didn't think we would have much of a chance. That's why I tried diplo even if out of character for a dwarf to deal with a half-orc.

Not sure if it would have made a difference, but I probably should have teamed up on the first wolf with Yarask to finish him off a round earlier.

Dwarf Fighter 3 HP -4/32; AC 20; T 12; FF 18; F +5; R +2; W +2; CMB +7; CMD 18; Speed 20ft; Init +1; Perc +4 TPK

Laying on the ground, Tegnar sees a wall of flame engulf him before everything goes black.

Yarask - You're going to have to finish off this wolf first. There's just 2 of you left.

ugh, why am I not surprised you can hit us with blind monsters. Your rolling continues to be insane! ... and mine horrendous.

"Damn overgrown muts!" Determined to go down swinging, and take one of them with him, Tegnar swings his axe from the ground but gets nothing but dirt.

While attacking the troll, Tegnar doesn't see the bomb thrown by the half-orc and is hit by the explosion. Seeing both Dolgrym and Othdan go down, he takes a step away from the wolf Yarask attacked and attacks the wolf near his downed companions.

Tegnar struggles to decide what the best course of action is. Finally, he speaks, "You talk of us desecrating this sacred place, yet it appears that you are here to loot it. What is this place and what are the hammer and armor you speak of?"

I'm not saying "let them go". That we know of, the only entrance is by the hopespring, so they are trapped. We seem to have a chance to gather intel, leave to get healed, and come back at 100%. The orc may escape and we run into him later, I don't know. This is my first AP so I don't know if they usually have an antagonist that you encounter on multiple occasions. Tegnar wants to fulfill his goal of protecting the town, but knows he can't do that if he is dead. I think he would choose to live to fight another day even if having to make a deal with an orc. That said, he's LG, so someone else should do the talking. Even talking to the orc, I don't think he would lie.

I get the feeling the GM is throwing us a rope, like he did when Othdan told us not to go into a certain room (look where that got us for not listening). I by no means am trying to metagame (I think I explained Tegnar's reasoning above), but let's not hang ourselves with said rope.

GM - Does Othdan have any diplomacy skills?

It looks like we have an opportunity to talk. We need to aid whomever does the talking to have any chance. I don't want to start talking or fighting until we have a consensus on what we are doing. I say talk.

Tegnar shakes his head. "This is not good. We're out of healing and haven't even found the orcs we were tracking. Why don't I lead and the rest of you try to stay at range. Hand me one of those flash powders. Maybe I can delay any attackers and give you all a round to fire at them before they close. Or do we turn around and try again after getting healed back in town?"

He picks up and readies his shield and holds the bag of flash powder in his other hand. He looks around the room, trying to help the others that are more perceptive, before moving on.

Tegnar is frustrated that his attack didn't seem to do much damage. Seeing the giant fall to the ground though, he tries to finish it off.

Wow, we moved quite a bit farther than I realized. I have a vial of holy water I can throw at rats. Need to take care of them first so they don't weaken us all. Do we still have 2 magic hopeknives? I made a comment in the discussion thread.

Tegnar recoils at the sight of the rats, remembering how difficult they were to deal with earlier. He drops his shield and grabs a vial of holy water from his belt pouch. He then tries to pour the water onto the nearest rat.

Othdan has the hopeknife that Yarask had originally and one of the thieves had the other. I don't think it was redistributed, so for simplicity, let's assume Yarask has it. Once I see the map, I can take action. I have some holy water I can throw.

"If we are going after the orcs, why doesn't everyone ready a ranged weapon while the cavern allows. If the space gets too confined, you can switch to melee. I'll keep my axe and shield ready and will step up to try to block any incoming orcs," Tegnar says to the others.

"Should we go single file or 2 by 2? I'm fine with either but would like to be near the front. I'm not as fast as Yarask, so it might take me a while to get into battle if I'm in the back." Tegnar says as he looks at the others for input.

Unfortunately, the strength drain was not a save so I believe I only gain an additional point for the overnight rest unless the priest performed long-term care on me which would restore me to my normal strength. Let me know how to proceed.

After being healed, Tegnar thanks the priestess. "We appreciate your help. Now we can finish off those intruders." He then stashes his 2 new vials of holy water into his belt pouch and readies his waraxe and shield.

"Othdan, you have proved yourself very capable. I would be honored if you would join us, at an equal share of course. I agree with Augie though, you should have a ranged weapon. We can provide you with a light crossbow if you don't have one of your own."

I'm ok with pooling gold as long as everyone can be fair. I know after the sale earlier we had: 55 pp/2077 gp/155 sp/55 cp

I spent 101 gp on 10 bolts and 2 potions of CLW.

Given our lack of a cleric and limited magic weapons, I am going to buy 2 vials of holy water for an additional 50 gp.

That would leave us: 55 pp/1926 gp/155 sp/55 cp

Please update with your past purchases.

The potions we took from the temple were worth 350gp although we only left 300gp.

Masterwork breastplate is 350 gp, so we should have enough. Eventually, I intend to be in full plate.

Once we get through this part, we can go through the item list again and sell anything we don't need. We should then look at getting some magic items if we can.

We should have 3 light crossbows from the assassins if someone needs a new ranged weapon.

Tegnar lets out an audible sigh of relief as the giant goes down. Only when the adrenalin from the fight subsides does he feel the pain from his wounds.

"I agree with Yarask. We are in no condition to continue. Is there anything of value on the giant or his handlers?" he asks as he moves over to search them.

Looking at the priest after the mention of healing, he says "Yes, thank you. We can definitely use some healing. We too have used up all of our potions. Also, I'm afraid I am still suffering from weakness from the rat bite. While I'm sure a good night's rest will help, I don't know if I will be completely recovered. Are you able to take care of that also. Since it is more than just the simple healing of wounds, I would be willing to contribute something for the services."

RE: movement - it appears that South is at the top of the map. Am I able to take a 5' step to the SW or is that difficult terrain? If I can, it appears that I would be 25' away from the giant and out of his reach.

If I can take a 5' step to SW ... Seeing the giant stuck by the tanglefoot bag, Tegnar takes a step away from it and fires his bow again.

GM - with a 20' reach, am I able to withdraw without provoking an AoO?

Dwarf Fighter 3 HP -4/32; AC 20; T 12; FF 18; F +5; R +2; W +2; CMB +7; CMD 18; Speed 20ft; Init +1; Perc +4 TPK

Oh great, the giant rolls a 9 and still hits me.

Looking for advice here. I can think of 3 options:

1. Withdraw: No AoO but can only move 40' so would probably be attacked again next round.

2. Run: AoO but AC 25. Hopefully, giant would turn his attention on someone else and maybe I could continue firing arrows from a distance.

3. Turtle: Drop bow and pull out shield and go total defence. AC 27 but giant has around +12 to hit.

The way the GM has been rolling, I'm probably dead. Assuming I'm correct that I am able to withdraw from my current position without causing an AoO, I guess I am leaning towards that option and hope he doesn't follow me.

Any thoughts?

What is the line on the map between Tegnar and the giant - a barricade or just some debris?

Seeing the giant quickly move down the hill, Tegnar stops and fires his bow at him.

Are we able to see the orcs handling the giant? If so, I'll fire at them.

"Dolgrym, why don't you and I try to move up behind the tower so we can get closer. I don't want to stand out here and get picked off by boulders flying through the air. Hopefully, we can draw him out from behind the tower so all of us can get better shots as we move in," Tegnar says as he begins to move to the east towards the edge of town. He keeps his eye on the tower, ready to fire if the giant or an orc shows themselves.

Tegnar also grabs a grenade before moving on.

What is the elevation difference between where we are and where the giant is? Also, can we see the hole they made in the hill?

Tegnar looks around for the hole the orcs entered. He has the short bow ready to fire at any that come within range (110').

If he wants it, I will try to retrieve bolts.

I believe that unless the orcs have the improved grapple feat, the attempt provokes an AoO.

If we are able to fire over the barricade, I think we should go to the left. I think we would have 2 options:

1. Yarask and Tegnar fire at the orcs while Dolgrym & Augie wait with reach weapons and we keep the barricade between us.

2. Yarask and Tegnar cover Dolgrym & Augie while they climb over the barricade. They can then fire if the orcs are alerted, or wait until Dolgrym & Augie are ready with reach weapons near the edge of the rock and then fire to draw them to us. Once engaged, Yarask and Tegnar can then climb over the barricade or continue to fire from a distance.

How high is the barricade to the west of the rocks?

As Yarask fires the arrow, Tegnar stands behind him and faces away from the beacon, with his weapon ready, watching for an ambush.

If we are 60' or more from any buildings, I will ready my crossbow. If closer, my longspear.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Readied attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 1 = 20 +1 if longspear
Damage): 1d8 ⇒ 4 +3 if longspear
