Hey all, I am currently playing an Enchantment based Sorcerer (Fey Bloodline) in a RotRL campaign and was hoping to get some spell choice advice because I see TOO many good spells and not enough room to take them all. Currently I have just leveled up to 9 and cannot decide on spells and can rework my spell list around if need be. Currently my list looks like this:

1st- Entangle*, Charm Person, Enlarge Person, Mage Armor, Grease, Magic Missile.

2nd- Hideous Laughter*, Burning Arc, Glitterdust, Mirror Image

3rd- Deep Slumber*, Haste, Hold Person

4th- Poison*, Confusion

I still have a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level spell to pick as well though I am leaning towards Blindness/Deafness(2), Fireball(3), Dimension Door(4) but have not settled on those yet. I've looked over many suggestions thus far but when it comes trying to shape my own list as a non-human favored class, you are a bit more limited on what you can choose. I am afraid there will be mind affecting enemies down the road that I cannot control, so I need some alternative options for when that happens.

So I have a Level 8 PC coming in to replace my current character in the party and I rolled a Sorcerer. I will be starting with 33,000 GP and am also going to be the party crafter via Craft Wondrous Item. However I cannot start myself off with crafted gear so what is a Sorcerer to buy to get started on her adventuring career while holding enough gold back to start crafting for herself?

Cloak of Resist +1
Ring of Protection +1
Some Lesser Rods

Idk what else yet until I can craft cheaply. Thanks in advance =)

Posted in Advice Section as well but figured why not =)

Okay recently our group ran into a snag with some "people incompatibility" causing one of our group members to leave taking our merry little band down to four and without an arcane caster. Currently our party is a Paladin of Cayden, Warpriest of Torag, Zen Archer and me the Ranger. We had an Arcanist in the group in the hands of someone who should not have ran a caster, but thats neither here nor there, and now we are without certain useful tools.

So Im thinking of retiring my Ranger, though I really don't want to, to fix our merry little band but what to play is the question of the hour. Me being the Ranger, was always the switch-hitting scout with a backpack that would make McGuyver proud, and I would like to incorporate that kind of playstyle but cover some more support ground.

The two I am considering would either be a Bard or a Reincarnated Druid/Gray Warden but the lack of arcane power bothers me a bit so if I go that route then Wizard or Arcanist that will play as an Admixture Blaster type. I've read the Forge of Combat and every guide over the years and have plenty of builds floating around in my head but mechanically I'm torn on which way to go.

So I come to you all in the boards for some friendly advice if any are ready to give it =D

Okay so when it comes to converting One Piece to the Pathfinder world, many know its pretty outrageous and new impossible BUT I think its possible to make some of the characters before the power levels get RIDICULOUS ala Gear 3 Luffy and the like.

Ace is a huge fan favorite of the series who's only real schtick is martial arts (Monk/Brawler) and channeling huge amounts of fire out...typically through his fists. However there isnt a sufficient way of scaling up that fire that I can think of without magic and at the cost of losing his martial prowess. So I come to you of the boards to see if others have tried this out yet plus while we are at it we can also discuss other One Piece characters if one so chooses.

Well the question is asked above because for the life of me my search-fu is failing.

Okay so we are going into our third session of RotRL and our party is already lacking. I have decided to just go ahead and retire my Kensai Magus because with the party composition we were missing quite a few things aside from the dedicated damage dealer such as nature skills and a fix for the 2 tanks to hog precious space. The rest of the party consists of a Human Sacred Shield Paladin who will go Samurai at 5th, Dwarven Warpriest of Torag, Human Zen Archer Monk and Elven Arcanist. Initially the Warpriest and Kensai were going to be the damage dealers while the Paladin tanked and soaked up some damage when possible however the guy playing a Warpriest has decided he loves those AC numbers ALOT and began shifting his playstyle to tanking alongside the Paladin thus taking away my additional offensive support, and the Kensai can only maintain so much in the early game with a low AC so with the GMs permission I had went ahead and swapped out to a Switch-hitter Ranger, which is what I used when I played this campaign before because lets admit it, Rangers are GREAT for this campaign, though I only saw to most of Book 2 the first time around.

I thought to myself "I am set to take care of this" and then I started really digging into the Hunter, specifically a reach Hunter with a Primal Companion and the gears started turning with Teamwork feats and the fact that the 2 guys playing tanks like to get in the way when they dont mean to. So when they get in the way, they can potentially be boosting off flanks and AoO's. So what is everyones thoughts on this if I'm being clear. I do apologize if its messy but I just worked all night and its time for bed so hopefully I will return in 6 or so hours. Thanks in advance.

Okay in my upcoming RotRL campaign we are in dire need of some focused damage so instead of going full bab in your face Barbarian I decided to play a class I've wanted to run since release, a kensai magus. Currently my party is going to be an Arcanist, Sacred Shield Pally/Samurai who wants to focus of AC and tanking, a War priest or cleric of some kind, and a Zen Archer. This party composition has changed a good 4 times in 2 weeks but now it's time to lock in characters so now I don't know which route with my kensai I should go. With the introduction of the ACG you can now achieve Dex to damage at level 1 going with a dueling sword which is awesome though I am afraid I might miss that 15-20 crit range by going this route over a strength katana build. Since I will be front lining I also worry about my survivability in the early game. I know it becomes less of a problem later but I might not even make it to later. So I come to ask advice of those who have weighed all the options of early dex damage/higher AC/worse crit range or the same damage scale via strength/higher crit/lower AC.

Okay I have another shot at hopefully completing a RotRL campaign though it requires me restarting with a new group. I had played up through book 2 previously so I know all the early stuff and even some of the later but I need opinions on what would shine more. In the case of our party, of the 5 playing we are gonna have a Cleric and an Inquisitor, both with a melee focus. Our third member is one that is the least experienced of the group and will probably play something mechanically simple such as a Barbarian, Fighter, or Monk though I am leaning towards one of the first two. Leaving myself and an unknown character. Immediately Wizard is screaming at me for a controller/blaster role which I am perfectly okay with, however that leaves so many missing pieces of our party puzzle in the hands of a potential unknown. Most importantly we are without a face unless the Inquisitor takes up that minor role. We also need a scout, trap guy, and some range. Already a Ranger can fix all of that BUT if our 5th unknown does not even come through then we are missing all of it. So to fix this I have also considered a Ranger1/Wizard1/EK10/AA4 build to fill in for all the above roles if it comes down to a 4 man group, but I am still unsure if that particular combo can get us through to the later books or not. Thoughts and opinions??

Okay I have a group of players who want to get back into playing and a couple of newbies with no general idea of the rules just yet, which only leaves me to GM. The veteran players aren't keen on RPing and like to just focus on combat, and I'm not sure how the two newer players would play under social interaction in a RP setting which basically boils it down to a mega dungeon setting or something that will keep them on their toes to stop their characters from dying at every turn so I need some suggestions. Rappan Athuk was something that came to mind BUT I've still not sat down to read it so I'm not sure if there is RP elements or just a dungeon trudge to get the BBEG plus with two newbies, I'm not sure throwing them into one of the hardest mega dungeons to date is the best idea. Are there any other kinds of modules out there or dungeons that I could run for a newbie group thats semi friendly to ease them into the game and as they start to get the hang of it, ramp up in difficulty?

Dark Archive

Okay I find this class to be an absolute gem for my sword style kick that I have been wanting for years. After perusing its pages many times over I have been thinking of fun class dips that wouldn't take away from the flavor of one. My latest idea was making a Oath of Vengence Paladin 4/Swordmaster 16 for a truly bonded Pally with his sword, which could in turn eventually turn into his own Holy Avenger. Any thoughts on this or is this combination a little too MAD to be viable??

Dark Archive

To all developers, has anyone come up with a write up for a hybrid class that takes Ranger Fighting Styles, Favored Enemies, Monster Hunter, Alchemy, and over all fearsome alchemic monster slayer type character and published it for Pathfinder?? Thanks

Dark Archive

What is the ability(s) that let a character act during the surprise round even if they are surprised?? It seems like there was one but I cannot recall it atm.

I am playing a Ranger nearing the end of the first book so far. I will be hitting level 4 shortly and will gain my animal companion. Originally I was inclined to use a wolf as my companion but after recent events involving a horse, I'm wondering if it was meant to be. So I guess my main question is, "is a horse a useful companion in this adventure?"

Dark Archive

After watching the new Riddick trailer last night, it got my Riddick in Pathfinder itch started up again so since the last decent Riddick thread was in 2011, I wanna see with new books and all what kinds of Riddick mimicry are out there. Please keep 3rd party material to a minimum if you must resort to it.

I want to run a very blasty kind of character who focuses alot on scorching ray, fireball, etc. I saw a character posted months ago who was a "Iron Man" esque character who used an Arcane Bond: Amulet and made it into a Folding Armor Amulet which is just plain genius and I would love to incorporate that kind of flavor into this guy. Considered Eldritch Knight for this or heck even a Magus but really not sure of the full direction I want to go yet. Though as of now I thought it would be cool IF this was an Arcane Bond to play it off as if combat is going wrong and for some reason teleportation is not viable kind of flavor the armor to self destruct ala explosive rune in hopes of that being the last viable option. But opinions and ideas are much needed as this is a very rough sketch of a concept.

Dark Archive

Okay essentially I want to re-create and reflavor a character who under particular duress, transforms his body level by level until finally hitting an almost full on demonic transformation much like Ichigo in his Hollow form from the Bleach series. Normally I was looking at a gestalt Bladebound Kensai/Synthesist but my group doesn't play with gestalts so now that leaves me with standard leveling and all I have to go on is possibly a Kensai with enough CHA to justify Eldritch Heritage. Any ideas for recreating a Hollow esque transformation in Pathfinder without gimping combat capabilities and keeping Shinigami flavor??

Dark Archive

So does anybody have any sample Void Mage builds posted on here?? I've ran a search and haven't come up with much unfortunately. Wanting to build one and play my first caster and well Void Mage's school ability is just amazing but idk what kind of feat lines I should be following, and what kind of role he plays such as "GOD" wizard with Void ability or what other roles are recommended.

Dark Archive

Okay so currently I am working on my fiancees first official PFS character and shes wanting to try a Half-Elf Ranger/Rogue that mixes it up in combat. Weapons of choice are looking like Greatsword, Longbow, and Warhammer. So originally I was gonna run around with some of the Switch-hitter Ranger stuff I've done in the past but then I realized that Many Shot is a long way away with multiclassing, so instead I'm now considering just getting her Rapid Shot at her 2nd Ranger Level and picking up PBS and Precise down the line possibly but still torn on it. So any advice on feat choices?? Also thinking of leveling her as Ranger 8/ Rogue 4 by the end of her career.

Dark Archive

Just wanted to know since I wanna try out a Wizard build soon and was looking at some of the posts some people have posted mentioning this combo.

Dark Archive

Is this the class one should play for their Psylocke kick?? I haven't had time to really go over the mechanics of psionics as a whole but the whole mind blade has me sold because psychic weapons are just so cool. What kind of things can be done with Soulknives?? I wanna do a character that starts as a Monk and then through meditation, taps into their psychic powers and goes into an assassin type of character who uses mental manipulation (if possible) and psychic weapons/unarmed combat. Thanks

I know these threads were active months ago, but since then has anyone ever come up with a sound reflavoring AND price of what a rehashed Combat Cross would run and play as?? I want to play an effective whip wielder eventually for Carrion Crown and well Inquisitor with a whip just seems right even if it is Castlevania cloning. My GM is pretty open minded and I think I have impressed him enough with creative characters that minor reflavoring as long as a balance isn't broken, will be fine.

Dark Archive

Okay guys, idk why, but the more I look at it, the more it seems like Link from the Zelda series has become very Druidic?? I used to just imagine him as a Fighter or Bard, but since Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, I've just wanted to mesh those two Links into one. Horse or Roc (depending on campaign) for his Animal Companion while a Dire Wolf wildshape is only 4 levels away. Thoughts??

Dark Archive

I have always wondered this personally. I have never like the idea of playing a prep spellcaster because I hate not having the right spell ready when its needed most. Because of this, I have never played one myself and have lately had to urge to try it out. I know they are all about battlefield control but my urge to blast things tend to take over when nobody can hit the monster. And then early levels your spell selection has quite a few options BUT you can only do them a couple times a day and my GM throws big dungeons with little opportunities to rest making it that much harder to manage. So what is the secret??

Dark Archive

I know they can have Familiars and Blackblades, but can they get an Arcane bonded object that functions like that of a Wizards?? My plan is a Hexcrafter Magus who uses a Scythe as his weapon. I wanted to have a bonded staff that the scythe blade rests on so it will have a dual function. Though I am still considering taking the dip into Admixture Wizard for the Bonded Staff and Elemental changing abilities.

Hello all, I am currently running a Dragon Disciple at level 6 with a very measly 16 AC which goes to 20 with Shield. So I want to further my AC with a Amulet of Natural Armor BUT I use a Amulet of Mighty Fists for a natural attack machine. So can you enhace a AoMF with a NA boost by the rules?? If so can I get a source because my GM didnt think you could either so this is why I ask the community. Thanks

Okay guys, my next project is a TWF kukri using Shadowdancer. My current plans for level spread are Barb 1/Deep Walker Guide 4/Shadowdancer 10 for a dungeon crawl group I am in. Its a 20 point buy.

Human CN
Str 16 (+2 for Human)
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 14
Cha 10

1. Barb1-Dodge, Power Attack
2. Ranger1-
3. Ranger 2-TWF (Combat Feat), Combat Reflexes
4. Ranger 3
5. Ranger 4-Mobility
6. Shadowdancer 1
7. Shadowdancer 2
8. Shadowdancer 3
9. Shadowdancer 4-Improved Critical (Kukri)

Thats a brief overview so far, still havent explored traits or further feats for him yet so I am always open for suggestions.

Okay so is there a way to give a Monk reach for his Flurry of Blows besides Lunge and Improved Eldritch Heritage (Abberant/Warped)?? Been watching alot of One Piece lately and wanna do a Barbarian/Martial Artist with extended punches, or at least get him on paper so that ONE day I can run him.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Though I like a universal list, I also am focusing this towards a Zen Archer backup I am working on.

Items I have so far
+1-5 Adaptive,???,???,???,??? Composite Longbow
Bracers of Falcons Aim
Efficient Quiver
Boots of Speed or Spiderclimb
Essential AC items: Ring, Amulet (though these can always be replaced with items I may have missed.
Cloak of Resist

So thats it so far. Are there any other pieces that I am missing, better quivers, etc? Also what are usually some other good enchantments for bow besides Adaptive and maybe Holy depending on the situation? Any notable arrows besides the basic cold iron, blunt, and adamantine?

Dark Archive

Okay so I need some build help making an Alchemist who focuses on bombs but also when he imbibes his mutagen can go something along the lines of the Hulk or Mr. Hyde. I do not want to go Vivisectionist because I want him to be diverse but also an arrogant intellectual who messed up on his mutagen and eventually starts developing an alter ego. For now I'm thinking Beastmorph Alchemist into Master Chymist BUT want his alter ego to me more natural weapon oriented so possibly a Monk dip but I'm not entirely sure. So any help and maybe builds others have tried themselves will hepl immensely.

Okay normally it takes a Summoner 1 minute to summon their eidolon and then at 6th level they get Makers Call which lets them do it as a standard action. My question is does it take 1 minute for a synthesist to summon their eidolon for their entire career since they get a dimension door ability at 6h level that replaces Makers Call and Transposition?
Thanks

Hello all, I want to build a full offensive Dragon Disciple who focuses on blasting fire spells albeit Red Dragon bloodline, who can also switch it up and go into melee with his claws (working on letting the GM let me keep them usable at all times instead of the 3+CHA per day). The plan after reading in the Guide to Guides is a Crossblooded Sorceror (Red Draconic/Arcane bloodlines) with some melee dips. When it comes to which classes to dip into, I am not sure yet. Oath of Vengence Pally seems REALLY nice however I am not imagining him as one but instead visualize him as a sort of a brash hot headed know it all who is always looking for a fight and always wanting to better himself. I have considered at least a dip in Barbarian for Rage, Fast Movement, and d12 HD and will start at level one as one and kind of initiate a kind of awakening of his powers while in the middle of a rage triggering his inner dragon. But I'm not sure what I want the other levels of melee to be. In the DD guide I wanted to follow the Beast side of the build and was looking at 4 levels of Melee and 1 of Sorceror and then jumping into DD until 15 and then back to sorceror. So any help or advice from others would be great. Traits and Feats are also appreciated because I never play a caster.

Dark Archive

Okay I have NEVER ran a shield on any character I have ever ran and have always went for a light-medium armor tops while usually wielding a greatsword, bow, or dervish dancing a scimitar. I've read most of the guides and most view the "Aegis" builds as Bodhi puts it, as subpar compared to most other options. So how effective can an Aegis build be and what classes make the best use out of it???

Dark Archive

Okay Fairy Tail is one of those animes I have recently started watching and the character designs have me intrigued into somehow making them into Pathfinder characters. However for those that have watched any of the episodes know that they ARE powerful wizards but have focus and melee, much like the main protagonist Natsu. He is a rash, hot headed, all or nothing Fire Wizard who uses his fists and dragon slaying magic to talk for him, and most other Wizards are like that. So the conversion I think works better for Gestalt, but I am honestly kind of stumped on how to effectively make conversions for a straight up 20 pt buy. For Natsu I was looking into a Quinnong monk because he only uses like 5 moves early on in the series which most could be re-flavored for Pathfinder but I am still not sure. So has anyone else looked into this yet?

Dark Archive

Okay guys I am currently playing a Ranger in a newly started RotRL campaign. We have just finished the Glassworks and due to some bad tactics my Ranger came close to deaths door, so I figured I had better go ahead and be coming up with a backup just in case the unforseen happens. So how viable, for those who have played this campaign is a Wizard of the Admixture school a solid choice in this campaign? Someone posted in the forums a day or so ago about dipping a level of Sorcerer for Crossblooded and a Tattoo familiar making it sound even more interesting. My party as it stands along with my Human Ranger consists of:

Halfling Cavalier
Human Knife Fighter Rogue
Hedgewitch of an unknown race
Half-Elf Wildcaller Summoner
Human Sorceress

I have also considered a Bard and Magus as backups but I'm not sure how long or how many times the Sorceress will actually show up to play so I figured a backup blaster is never a bad thing. So thoughts and advice on this??

Dark Archive

Okay from a Pathfinder persepctive what would you all say Izanagi's weapon from Persona 4 would be? I personally would consider it a glaive but maybe some other people could chime in. here is a pic

http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Izanagi

sorry cannot not figure out how to link this even with the format help =/

Dark Archive

Okay so this is for a potential Carrion Crown character in the possible near future. So the idea is to have a quiet and reserved Paladin of an unknown deity at the moment who tries to talk down most enemies and will usually spend his first round observing the battlefield to get an idea of the situation. I want him to be a very intimidating yet very diplomatic kind of guy with a very mysterious vibe going on and he is not much on talking about himself or his past. His weapon of choice is a Scythe, which will more than likely not change and if I can get GM approval may attach the scythe blade onto a staff for an all in one weapon. His familiar will be the cutsiest and possibly the most useless animal ever just for some fun RP stuff. Okay stat block goes like this:

Human Paladin 2, Sorceror 3-6, EK or DD 10
20 PT Buy
STR 16
DEX 14
CON 12
INT 12
WIS 7
CHA 16

Bloodline is one of the hardest things for me to decide because I think it would be fun to RP a Pally with a Shadow bloodline but making it work is hard because I'm not sure how to play off of it yet and then of course there is Draconic but I'm still not sold on the idea of DD except for the ability score bonuses. Cold is something else I am interested in BUT it is the most resisted element of the four unfortunately so I'm not really sure where to go there. Also would a Wis score of 7 be okay since Pally can add CHA to saves plus Sorcerors get awesome Will saves?? I'm sure more questions will arise if this post lives long enough but I'm on empty right now. So now the help can begin =D

Dark Archive

Okay MONTHS ago some threads were floating around about dungeon prep and such and its not on Ashiels Guide discussion page like I was hoping for, but a poster (Ravingdork, I think) mentioned a kind of universal multitool esque item that could be used as a shovel, crowbar, etc and I just wanna know what it was called and its source please so if anyone knows then let me know thanks =D

Dark Archive

Okay I am starting up a switch hitting TWF Ranger instead of a great big sword. So I need advice on light weapons to quickdraw and only take that -2 for TWF. I've considered Kukris or Shortswords but for flavor I'm leaning more towards a sword but is there a light sword that offers 1d6 or higher AND has an 18-20 crit chance?? I dont have Ultimate Equipment yet so I'm not sure if they introduced one yet aside from a Wakizashi. On a side note, martial weapon if possible because I'm choked for feats as it is.

Dark Archive

So as listed above, how does a bomb wielding Alchemist fare in the game. I played one to level 2 and my campaign ended so I never got to try him out thoroughly. What kind of feats, traits, races, and equipment can they play well off of?? I've read Ogres guide but that was before UC, ARG, and UE so was anything new or amazing that was released in that time frame? And this will not be a "play a Vivisectionist" kind of post thanks =D

Dark Archive

Playing a Ranger in my home RotRL campaign and from what I've gathered, Underground, Urban, and Mountain seems to be the way to go but in what order should those be taken??? Since I know of nothing that lies ahead and am just survived the goblin attack Im not sure if it goes to a more underground approach or stays in a more urban environment until 8 when I get my second FT. I figured Mountain would be last.

Dark Archive

So what has the Ranger received over the past little bit that may help him shine even brighter than before if anything at all?? I love Treantmonks Guide to Rangers but its a bit outdated and the other two guides aren't the skirmisher type that I enjoy playing so much. I know Marc Radle put out the Spell-less Ranger which everyone should check out...highly recommended and that is what I am getting ready to play finally in a RotRL campaign but I haven't kept up with anything regarding beefing up Rangers or if they have gotten any new feats/weapons that can help them shine even more so any info is appreciated =D

Dark Archive

Hey all, starting tomorrow I will be doing a RotRL Campaign and I'm bringing in my Bladebound Hexcrafter into play. Originally I was basing it off of some Hexcrafter advice and going to take Rime Spell but my GM said I had to take one trait from the Players Guide so no Lineage and Wayang goodness and I would rather be boosting Shocking Grasp rather than Frostbite so I'm now in need of a good 1st level feat. I'm playing a STR based whiny elf that uses a swordcane to beat his opponents with because his black blade is actually locked and he thinks it just a cane until later levels =D

Dark Archive

Okay being a huge anime fan always brings ideas and hopes of bringing your favorites to the playing field even at best just trying to play off a similar theme and mine today just so happens to be Mugen from Samurai Champloo. For those who know of who I speak then you know he is easily a Chaotic Neutral pain in butt with a serious temper who mixes up his fighting style between martial arts and swordplay all while mixing them together when possible just going with the flow. So to bring his essence to the front I'm considering a Sword Saint X/Martial Artist 2 build with focus in Katana of course and not wearing any armor. I've also considered doing kind of an Aldori esque build while maintaining that same Martial Artist dip for all those handy yet flavorful additions but im still leaning towards the first option. So does anyone have any other ideas of where this can go...this build is still in its Alpha stages since I hope I wont have to replace my PC that quickly but you never know =P

Okay guys for another character I have in mind, I have loved the Knife Master since it came out in UC and have always wanted to play a character that is somewhat similar to Riddick in the sense of using knife like weapons and fists while skulking around or being up in their face depending on the situation but IMO the rouge is a bit too squishy for what I had in mind and so then came the multiclassing with either Fighter or Ranger and well as much as I liked the way they looked on paper, it just felt lacking in a few ways. So does anybody have any suggestions, not going for the Riddick clone, just a boy and his knife =D
