RotRL Best Favored Terrains?

Rise of the Runelords

Playing a Ranger in my home RotRL campaign and from what I've gathered, Underground, Urban, and Mountain seems to be the way to go but in what order should those be taken??? Since I know of nothing that lies ahead and am just survived the goblin attack Im not sure if it goes to a more underground approach or stays in a more urban environment until 8 when I get my second FT. I figured Mountain would be last.

My ranger spent a lot of time at the early levels wishing for a "seashore and riverside" favored terrain. No, that is not the same as Water, because he usually had land beneath his feet.

It is no spoiler to point out that the third module, The Hook Mountain Massacre, for levels 7th to 9th, has a terrain given away in its name. It makes for flavorful roleplaying to claim that favored terrain there.

The merits of the other two terrains you mention is more a matter of taste. Favored terrain gives bonuses to initiative, Knowledge (geography), Perception, Stealth, and Survival. Is your character more likely to want to be perceptive and stealthy in a city or in a dungeon?

Yeah that one is a bit of a give away but in my game I am playing a 3PP Ranger class called the Spell-less Ranger and he gets a form of sneak attack against his favored enemies and in his favored terrains so I was looking at it from more of a "will I fight more in dungeons or city areas"? I'm kind of aiming towards Underground as it is but just wanted some confirmation on if thats a solid choice before I make a decision in a couple levels haha

Anyone???

You're going to be in underground/cave/dungeon settings fairly often. Off the top of my head I count...nine or ten.

Two cities and two towns, including Sandpoint.

Three separate mountain areas, the first of which is Hook Mountain in Book 4.

What's your first favored enemy?

Spoiler:

If it's giants, you made the right choice. You get to fight them in all three of the terrains you listed.

Grand Lodge

urban is low on the totem of area. So underground, Mountains, then urban.
As for favorite enemies....

Liberty's Edge

I am playing a Spell-less Ranger in our RotRL campaign.

Choice of Favored Terrain is CRUCIAL for this variant class. Even moreso if you use the Advanced Spell-less Ranger (also from Mark Radle).

My choice of Favored Terrain, based on my DM's advice, is as follows :

- 1st = Urban
- 2nd = Mountain
- 3rd = Underground

Remember that as a Ranger Talent, you can gain the Additional Favored Terrain feat (also from the Spell-less Ranger). You can also buy Boots of Friendly Terrain for a similar result.

If you do so early on, you should take Underground 2nd instead of Mountain, as the latter terrain does not really come into play in the early parts of the AP.

Remember that a dungeon in a mountain area counts as both Mountain and Underground.
