It doesn't have to be a gnome. I've just never played a gnome before. In our current campaign I play the party tank as a halfling warrior. As far as role play goes he is a bit psychotic. He'd think nothing of jumping off a tower onto the back of a flying enemy. It's kinda funny. I'm liking these ideas though. I'm sure the dm won't allow the apg rules but I can ask. Tripping would be hysterical. Thanks for the tips.
Ok, just for chuckles I'd like to get the communities input on this. For several years now I've been toying around with the idea of creating a gnomish monk. It started out as a bit of a joke between myself and the group I play with but now I am seriously considering it. Why you ask? Well because I think it would be both amusing in terms of role play and in the visual of a 3' tall gnome flying in for the karate chop is just too tempting to pass up. I understand the size of a gnome will prove problematic in terms of game balance. Also the slower movement speed would negatively impact one of the defining features of the monk class. I'd like to play this character nonetheless. I don't want to be too under powered just for the sake of role play. So how would YOU build this character? No need to go higher than level 12 or so since we rarely make it beyond that.
Amazonnia wrote: xp is based on mostly how much damage we make. Ah this hearkens back to the good old days when the only person who got xp for a fight was the one who did the last point of damage and got 'the killing blow'. Things were so competitive back then and there was no incentive to play a support character or even role play. It was all about competition with the enemies and your own party. LOL Yeah this kind of system for experience breaks pathfinder and pretty much any game system. It also breaks parties.

My apologies folks but I must respectfully bow out of this campaign. Our district internet at work is so slow that loading paizo often takes 10 minutes or more ... if it loads at all. I have tethered my laptop to my cellphone just to make this post. Today I went to download a font file and the estimated download time is 24 hours. At the beginning of lunch today I tried to load my gmail ... that was 45 minutes ago ... and looking through the window from my office to my desk in my classroom I can see gmail is now about 20% loaded. So I can only post from my phone during the day which is the time i'd make most of my posts. In the evening I coach two rep basketball teams so I'm kind of busy with that. Being a single dad, my evenings are filled with homework, housework, cooking, and sports. Then I just die on my bed until the next morning when I get up at 5:30 and start all over. Good luck to you guys in defeating the evil!! Gunk

Yeah, I only ever mentioned beheading when someone was so bold as to tell the pally he had demon blood. That sort of conversation doesn't go very well usually. No If we can't keep him under wraps we'll have to kill him was exactly what I had in mind.

Its fine. The dagger is better off in Grimm's hands because he will actually put some mileage on it. So he should take it. As for the mace, well there are a few problems. First, if it was used by a gnoll it probably isn't sized small. As a matter of fact, its probably longer than Gunk. The other problem would be the weight. I jettisoned a bunch of gear earlier just so I could make weight and not take a bunch of penalties to my skill checks. So all in all, were better off selling the mace and I will look into getting a mw dagger or some such thing to have on me.

I'm glad that didn't end with the ritual beheading of Raj by an enraged paladin Gunk thinks to himself. Guys, I do have one request to make. In future, if we are faced with multiple potentially hostile enemies and one or more of them are not attacking us, can we not provoke them into joining the fray until AFTER we've dealt with the ones that are actively hostile? It is just a numbers game and I'd rather we didn't set ourselves at a disadvantage if we didn't need to. I will level Gunk by tomorrow. As for the loot, Gunk would like to put a bid in for the +1 dagger as I currently have no melee weapon. And also for the +1 resistance cloak.

So red, yellow, and ogre are all down? Gunk will ready an action with his next bomb and throw it if at any point in the combat turn two or more enemies are adjacent to one another. rng touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
edit: wow, 2 in a row. Confirmation rolls confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
ok here is a question, if Gunk lands a crit with his bomb damage is doubled as per normal. But is the splash damage also doubled? I couldn't find anything in the rule books on that ... mind you I only did a cursory glance.

GM Dave, my AC is now 19 with the casting of shield in the first round. So I'm not sure that attack actually hit me. Gunk is shocked at his immediate danger of being in melee with a bugbear, a situation he is woefully ill equipped to handle. He quickly does a 5' step backwards away from the creature and tosses a bomb at the two bugbears in the back. Rng Touch Atk: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
edit: roll to confirm crit Rng Touch Atk: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
that should be 21 damage to the one bugbear and 4 to his buddy unless he makes his save. Gunk throws his bomb mixture and it bounces wildly off the creatures arm and the poor creature looks down in confusion at the strange glass vial just as hit ricochets up into his face. The vial ignites and a jet of blue orange flame cooks his eye ball right in its socket!

I can select up to 3 adjacent "safe squares" where no allies will take splash damage. That was the very first alchemical discovery I took.So you guys are safe. I suspect the ogre will lose his dex bonus while he is grappling? Gunk moves over to Hajar's left and throws a bomb at the ogre. Rng Touch vs AC: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Edit: wow, thats some fine damage! Ugh

Gunk assesses the danger of the situation and then his hands become a blur as he quickly mixes up a foul looking concoction and drinks it down. *casts shield* Then he moves into position behind Hajar and says Careful Hajar, this one looks clumsy but if he gets a hold on you he looks like he would tear your arms off and then beat you with them!

I'm just assembling furniture this weekend. A LOT of furniture. Man, one day I'd like to meet the guy who makes the instructions for these furniture kits and kind of punch him in the mouth!! Lol just kidding, but I have silently cursed them out a few times today.

the game mechanics are ridiculously simplified. kinda feels like a beginner's boxed set. I do really like the whole concept of advantage and disadvantage though. and expertise seems to be pretty neat idea too. but like I said they seem to be simplifying the rules ... or dumbing the game down as my friend says. as far as I can tell they have dramatically changed the feat system works. you don't pick feats on a regular schedule. instead whenever you're entitled to an ability score increase you can choose to instead choose feet.

So we play tested DnD Next last night. This is our 3rd or 4th play test and we usually do that when our regular DM is out of town. Our temporary DM says to us "Ok, this module is in no way a test of your ability or skill as a player ..." and he leaves that off with a malicious glint in his eye. So anyways, I chose the pre-generated human monk and we set out to tackle the "Mines of Madness". Holy Moly!!!!! I died BEFORE THE FIRST INITIATIVE ROLL!! A purple worm bursts up from below the ground and eats me alive. POW! Dead. 5 seconds into the adventure. All in all we had 5 player deaths and were not quite done yet. Apparently there's a dragon. Oh goodie!

Gunk recoils as the skeletal face turns to look in their direction. Quickly he pulls out a vial with two different coloured liquids inside separated by a thin membrane. He shakes the vial breaking the membrane and mixing the two liquids which quickl react and form a deep orange goo which he then throws at the skeletal figure. Ranged Touch Atk: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Here's wishful thinking but if it is a gnoll skeleton add one to both attack and damage

Whoa! Did I miss something? We created a funeral pyre and cremated a dozen bodies less than 300' from enemies? The smoke from that fire would be seen for 30 miles or so away. Thats crazy doing it from a few hundred feet. We either invited the enemy to ambush us or we simply told them we are here so be very ready for us. I'm not saying that these fellow devotees dont deserve a proper burial but the timing is way wrong imho.

Gunk beams a smile at Hajar and gives him the no bloody way in hell am I gonna rescue you from this kind of look. You're on your own loverboy. Watch out for those talons though ... and the teeth. We can wait outside for 3 minutes or so if you like.

I've spoken my piece on the topic of the harpy. I think it is foolish to trust a creature of that nature. The thing lives here ... in a den of gnoll activity. It must have some kind of alliance with the gnolls. Or at the very least it has a mutual tolerance for them. This is the kind of creature that would just as soon stab you in the back. If you think we can win it over, great. I personally think it is a tremendous risk. After a pause, Gunk adds we've killed what? 14 gnolls now? They had about 40 ish to begin with? One more good tactical strike and I think we could easily take out the main base. Putting the corpses in the snake lair could provide us with just the perfect ruse for this sort of tactic. Perhaps we put the bodies there and wait for them to come investigate?
Alch 2|| HP 13/18|| AC 15 FFAC 13 TAC 13 || FRW 4, 5, 1||
We may want to think about hiding the carnage out there. It could buy us some more time if we hid the bodies near the snake lair. We know they dont go in there. If they did find the bodies there they may think the snake attacked. That might buy us an extra day or two of surprise.

Sorry guys, I can't do a single thing against that goat. I've got absolutely nothing. Hopefully Hajar doesn't go down. Just a quick question though GM Dave. The gnolls with the X through them are dead? So there is only 2 left? Gunk will throw a bomb at gnoll 6 rng tch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Alch 2|| HP 13/18|| AC 15 FFAC 13 TAC 13 || FRW 4, 5, 1||
Gunk will throw a bomb at the gnoll in k21. rng tch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Remember, my bombs to 5 points of splash damage to adjacent enemies. So that first attack should have hit the three gnolls next to the goat thing for 5 each if they failed a reflex save.

Indeed the original plan was to lure the snake towards the gnolls and have it do some of the dirty work for us. That plan seems to have fallen out of favor though so now were back to us doing the dirty work. @Raj, no the original 33 gp should be in your inventory now. That new gold count is ADDITIONAL gold. I will be removing the stuff in yellow shortly as well as the current gold count so as not to confuse people. You have until the end of the day Thursday to get this added to your character sheet. Also, we really should designate who is going to carry those other items. Potions of CMW and such should be divvied up now so we know who is carrying them. I will start a second tab on the spreadsheet to include a log of who kept what item.

Master Hajar, do you take me for a fool? I do not plan on going anywhere near the snake. Given Grim's description of its size, I'd make a tasty snack. I simply plan on getting close enough down wind to cast a spell that will lead the creature to the gnolls den.

Facing Hajar, Gunk says the following "Do my ears deceive me? Or did the stuffy paladin just make a joke? And Sarenrae didn't strike you down? I might just make a decent travelling companion out of you yet." To Leyli Gunk says "Wait? What? Are we talking about the same thing here? Grim said the gnolls avoid the place because of the snake. My apologies, I didn't realize the snake was a pet. It's too bad too because I could have cast Ghost Sound and made the snake think there was a hoard of rats running past its lair ... or whatever else kind of food sounds we like." |
