Going through the list I'm missing one uncommon, and have 4 broken Leng Spiders, as well as 1 broken drider and 2 skavelings. A number of badly bent ones as well, especially among the rares, which is unfortunate.

Also, the distribution of the uncommons is heavily weighted towards the large sized minis, making those uncommons more like rares (which makes having ones that have variants sort of a waste if you're only going to get 1 on it).

I think this may be the point where I stop picking these up.

Thankfully a hairdryer will quick fix the badly bent ones.

Heat them up, then hold them in the correct position while they cool, which is pretty darn quick.

Now, what I AM trying to figure out still is why shipping for Mengkare alone is nearly as much as the entire case.

That I am seriously struggling with.

Two problems that I saw with that site:

1) Darklands Rising cannot be selected for a replacement request, and it is after February 3rd.

2) Their description of the process for requesting replacements mentions a receipt selected from their database. Do they have a record of purchases made via Paizo?

As I said above, Wizkids told me they get the sets up on the replacement request page once they have replacements available, which will be a couple weeks after the release date.

The replacement policy says you need to upload an image of your proof of purchase. It also says you can only request one replacement per purchase but I've never had a problem with them providing replacements.

They've been great—I didn't assemble my Falling Star model for over a year after it came out and found a component missing. They mailed me the part with no questions asked.

Darklands is listed on the replacement site now. My only issue now is that Wizkids expects me to mail them the miniatures.

That's pretty unfortunate that I have to pay the shipping to send them their broken goods.

At least Amazon will pay the return postage. I'm out.

Now, in the past, I've gotten replacements directly from Paizo after providing pictures of the broken models from past sets. Given the price we pay for these sets, that with proof of the damage, we should not have to pay out of our own pockets to ship them to Wizkids (who, by the way, do not guarantee replacement of the exact minis, but another of comparable value if out of stock of the broken mini in question).

Some sets I've had zero issues with, but a few have broken pieces. I only had 3 damaged/broken minis in this case.

But, again, I have yet to send back to Wizkids and have worked directly with Paizo instead.

Is that up to Wizkids or Paizo? In the past I thought you (Paizo) had to open individual booster boxes to identify what was in them so that you could sell known individual minis. Has that changed?
I believe that's Wizkids' date. I contacted them about replacing what was broken in my case. They said this set would show up on the replacement request website a couple weeks after the release date in February, when they get individual stock for replacements.

Yes, my experience with this set is wildly different than any other set previously.

-I also did not get a particular miniature.
-There were four uncommon miniatures that I only got one of each, whereas in the past I could always expect 2 to 3 of any particular uncommon.
-Instead of getting 2 to 3 of each uncommon I got 6 of some commons whereas I could usually expect 4 to 5 previously.

I've purchased every case since the line began and this is the first time I've not gotten every miniature in the release as part of my case.

Now, I will say that a few of the miniatures included are some of the best looking minis to date (The Stag Beetle and the Jabberwock, for example).

That said, I think the set was a missed opportunity. Instead of getting 4 Adamantine Golems, Arboreal Regents, and Leng Spiders, if those numbers had been halved and a larger selection of huge model variations included, this could have been a much more stellar release.
Also, perhaps, making the mammoth riders removable, their number could have been a fantastic move! Also allowing for the minis to fill two different roles and allowing a larger variety of huge minis to be included.

Both happy and disappointed at parts of the release, especially given the increased price point and lack of dungeon dressings.

I now wish that all the prior sets were on clear bases! That move was truly fantastic!!!!!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The huge sculpts are fantastic. That said, I'd rather see new huge models that haven't been issued before so we aren't winding up with duplicate huge red and black dragons from prior sets.

Please give us unreleased huges, there are so many available to choose from!

So glad to hear this! Prays for "common" larges to accommodate extra horses. Surely you can find a way to cram 2 larges in a few boxes :D.

Many thanks for your quick response Vic.

Not arguing, just saying...Whilst you say "it's necessary", I believe there is nothing prohibiting you to offer a complete set of any given line of figures, except for the cost to the customer.

Pricing is a big deal. While you may be willing to spend $350 for a full set, if you look at the early reaction to the Pathfinder Battles line, there was as much discussion of the "high price" as there was about the randomization. When I say "it's necessary," I mean that doing otherwise would be cost prohibitive.

AJAG wrote:
If there were a pricing model, that absolutely guaranteed "at least" one of each figure or "only one" of each figure, I am sure many would make that purchase, whatever the price may be.
We require WizKids to do their best to ensure that each sealed Pathfinder Battles case contains a complete set of minis—we've been insistent about that since day 1. Because human error is possible, though, they can't *guarantee* it, but if you look at people's case reports online, you'll find that they meet that goal with very few exceptions.

With the past pages of quotes, and the above, being said...

I'm now thinking what I need to do is gather up all of my ruined-faced Iconics and Rares to take photos of. That is, all of those with terrible paint, not necessarily ALL of my Iconic and Rare Humanoids.

I've been sighing and feeling let down set after set with those key minis and thinking... "5 foot rule, 5 foot rule". Is WizKids planning to replace the horrible paintjobs (wouldn't think so...)?

But, in all honesty I've been quiet for a long time on this subject and now feel like I shouldn't have been. Sorry if this is overly critical, Vic and company, but it's really been bugging me for a long time now.

As for WizKids replacement methodology (and the post for the poor guy waiting 4 months now for replacement!), I know Paizo and WK have to protect themselves from people taking advantage, but honestly, the WK replacement model is ridiculously costly, complicated, and inefficient.

I bought a set of these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000K41E7Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8 &colid=162LFEP6FFE9B&coliid=I2UFBDFW9CGM07

Just stick a few folded sheets of paper in the bottom for boxes that are holding med-small minis to cover the finger holes. For large minis, not even that is required. Luckily I have some built in shelves in my office that hold all of the boxes with room to spare.

Easily labeled once you figure for sure how the minis will be organized and will hold all but the bulkiest of the large minis and scads of non-larges.

I'm going to try for the "limited time" combat myself. I'll play it pretty much as-written, except with the PCs already in town instead of rushing in afterward.

I still have the problem of "why does Magga break off the fight?" after a few rounds? I am thinking perhaps she has an aversion to sunlight, and so when the rain stops and the clouds break, she retreats to the depths. There's a paladin leading the party so the "heavenly chorus" thing isn't totally out of place.

Why does the rain stop during the Black Magga fight anyway? Have the Annis Hags given up at that point for some reason?

This is such a cool scene in principle, but it is really hard to fit everything together.

Just ran this on Saturday. We'd had a bit of down time between the sessions and the initial rumor, so a bit more foreshadowing on my part might have improved the impact of the scene.

I ran it as the timed fight written in the book, but kept two of her tentacles working on the church. A full round attack (bite and all tentacles) is likely to kill nearly any character outright.

As far as leaving, instead of heading out, I had a boulder upstream shift sending a massive tree spinning down ahead of a large surge of water. The tree narrowly missed the nearest PC, and slammed Magga away from the church out into the deeper flow, conveniently having her fling away another grappled/grasped PC in the process.

First off, love all of these!

I really don’t see them reprinting minis in newer sets. And if you really want more H & M town guards, you can always purchase the singles for them. Besides, if you have a different town guard mini, you could say it’s uniform/markings are for a different town. :)

I think his intent was misinterpreted. He's not hoping for a repaint, but that the new sculpt has the same paint scheme as the H & M guards so they don't look out of place when used together.

0 Hobgoblins
0 Gnolls

An Elf, Dwarf, Gnome, or Halfling set would be great to give a variety of molds for heroes, NPCs, and Villains.

There really are very few PC useable demi-humans for character minis. Not everyone wants to use an iconic Lem to represent their Gnome Paladin ;-)

Bump, bump, bumpety bump!

Multiple merchants, just general townsfolk, farmers, a smith, etc....

Love this idea.

Bumping the townsfolk, npc, animal idea + backfill of small elementals, that sort of thing.

Would also love to see more variety of character types with diff weapon selections that didn't require key npc models having to be devoted to players to properly represent their character on the table.

We now have a small number of orcs and bugbears, but there's no love for gnolls, hobgoblins, etc... yet.

I for one would NOT want to lose out on other minis for enlarged Iconics.

I hear the comments on the goat rarity. In the case of a basic sculpt like this, I'll often err on the side of common in favor of reserving the uncommon slot for a more complex sculpt or paint job. I figure a GM could use a herd of goats or something if need be. I also have to think of the guy who buys three or four boosters instead of the guy who buys a whole case. Still, this is one of the hardest parts about building these set lists (especially in the case of "Adventure Path" sets with lots of NPCs), and I'm constantly tinkering with my methodology based on feedback from customers.

I LOVE the fact that I might wind up with upwards of 4-5 goats. They'll be amazingly useful as window dressing in village, town, and farm settings.

Don't get me wrong, I love lots of baddies and monsters, but I adore the idea of more common minis that I can put on the table (still holding out for townsfolk, etc... and more minis like the goat that aren't going to make PC's immediately grab the d20 for initiative rolls when I plop them down.)

Well done, well done indeed.... even if it IS key to a particular encounter in ROW... hmmmm, werecow anyone?

So, we've got our mitts on the awesome red dragon evolution set, and we know we've got the special Reign/Winter two pack of huge minis coming up.....

Sadly she is just one of several great models that have been nearly ruined by terrible paint jobs.

The photos shown here are generally "paint masters," meaning that we send these figures to the factory and expect them to match this quality as closely as possible. Most of the time, they do an excellent job. Sometimes, the plant's quality control slips at certain points during the production run, meaning it's possible to have some variance in fidelity to the paint master.

WizKids' factories seem to have especial trouble not overpainting female faces, which is something we continue to work with them to improve.

Thanks for the (probably a repeat, if so, sorry) clarification on the expected paint quality, Erik. Thank you as well for all the questions you answer for us here on the forums.

We definitely appreciate it if you keep leaning on them for face quality.

We probably won't do dinosaurs, so it's safe to cross them off any wishlists. Huge slots are so precious that it doesn't make sense to use them on creatures that are so easily represented by a plastic toy.

Froghemoth is an obvious one I'd really like to do. I think the elementals would sell well, but you'd need to do four of them so the packaging is a little strange. Two sets of two?

Dragon Turtle is one I'd like to do, probably paired with some other sort of aquatic dragon.

I'm glad to hear that. Dinosaurs are probably the last thing I'd want to see in a mini set as I could most likely pick up toy dinos cheaper than Pathfinder Minis.

I'd LOVE a Dragon Turtle, and really like (can't remember who it was) the idea of evolution sets for elementals. Despite having the Med and Large Ele's from the prior sets, I'd love to see a new/diff sculpt for Small through Huge Elementals of each type. Heck, maybe even make it a bridge between the evolutions and the larger collector sets with maybe 8 minis? (3 small, 3 Med, 1 Large, 1 Huge) Why not think "outside the box" as the Evolution-sized boxes can hold more than 3 minis with a modified plastic insert.

And, to have to pay yourself to ship them back is the absolute antithesis of any other company's defective merchandise policy. I worked to find an alternative workaround as I was absolutely floored to learn that WizKids required the minis to be sent back (at the buyer's own cost) and that there was then no guarantee of even getting the same minis back.

I pray that Paizo works to present a better, more customer friendly replacement methodology with WizKids in order make this easier for everyone.

Legends of Golarion was the only set (and I've collected every single one of them except the Undead Expansion) that didn't have broken/incomplete minis in it.

I'm going to keep getting them, as I think they're great minis, but the regularity of breakage, and the method of replacement available to the general public are a HUGE concern.

21 people marked this as a favorite.

So, a number of months ago the party Ranger (played by a great guy who is just a tad on the introverted side), Zandu, decided to help the shopkeeper's daughter and was quite willing to go along with what she actually had in mind. Needless to say he was caught in a compromising situation but managed to extricate himself before it came to blows.

He was subsequently banned from the Sandpoint General Store, nor were his companions welcome back. Shayliss, however, came to visit him at the Rusty Dragon Inn and he still proved willing. She got a footnote most of the party's trips back to town.

Well, the party JUST returned for a very brief trip to Sandpoint from Magnimar as a slight detour before heading to Fort Rannick. The party dropped gear at the inn and went their separate ways with the exception of Zandu who was welcomed with exuberant hugs and kisses from Shayliss which very quickly turned to tears and hiccupping speech. Zandu's player was expecting a new adventure hook to follow... what he got instead was...

Shayliss: <insert random sobs, etc..> "I'm late, Zandu, and if I don't get my moonblood soon, mother will start to suspect."
Zandu's player: Stammer, stutter, fluster...
Rest of the players: <Hysteria, laughter, grins, and comments about evil GMs>

It took much prompting from yours truly, and a lot of OOC peer pressure from the rest of the players (easily 10 minutes or more of him trying to figure another way out, then another 5 before agreeing they needed to be wed before he left for another 2-3 weeks minimum), but Zandu finally agreed to make an honest woman out of her and go seek her hand in marriage with the sour faced and ham fisted Ven Vinder.

Zandu entered the General Store and found Mrs. Vinder behind the counter who he'd never directly met before and it took a moment before she realized who he was and went to fetch Ven. Ven stood in the doorway to the side room, flexing his fists, and said, "I thought I told you that you weren't welcome here any more?"

Zandu agreed that was the case, and began a valiant effort to choose, in character, the right words to profess his love for Shayliss and ask for her hand in marriage. Now, he didn't do too bad on his own, but not being a party "talker" he wanted to rely on his Diplomacy check to bolster his own choice of words. The die tumbled and...

NATURAL ONE!

The other three players were reduced to near tearful, hysterical piles of mirth and poor Zandu's awkwardness, and yup, Ven stepped forward and clocked the ranger hard. Zandu, however, did not raise his hands and did nothing to harm master Vinder despite new blows flying in each following round.

After three rounds, a resoundingly successful Fort check to retain his wits from the pummeling, Zandu once again (quite well in character) tried to profess his intent to wed Shayliss as well as his love for her. Still not confident with his roleplay of the moment, Diplomacy was once again the go to move. A new and different die altogether tumbled and...

<by now, and all throughout the preceeding, the peanut gallery was in full force making it difficult to keep the scene on track. They were also in tears and gasping with laughter. (example: One of them in mocking hillbilly patois, "I knocked up yer daughter, Ven.")>

More pummeling ensued with no attempts at defense and black-eyed, split-lipped, and bloody-nosed Zandu once again made a fantastic fortitude check to remain conscious. Once more he tried to plead his case between fist blows, and he finally found the right words (again, well done in character, and this might have gone far more smoothly if he hadn't rolled to begin with, lol)and with a final Diplomacy check threw a...

Realizing the ranger's intent, and knowing the growing reputation of his daughter, Ven finally "heard" what was being said. In a bid to save face, before hitting Zandu again, he muttered "hit me, boy". Zandu's player blinked and said, "what?" So I repeated as Ven, "Hit Me!" and then slugged Zandu again.

They each slugged one another two more times, Zandu again made his check to remain conscious, and Vens fortitude check was a...

NATURAL ONE!!!!

Ven was knocked off of Zandu and thunked down with his back to a shelf as he shook his head and wiped blood from his mouth. Ven said something along the lines of, "Well, it's good to know you have a little fire in you, lad." And proceeded to set the terms of the wedding. As a hero of Sandpoint, Zandu would foot the bill for the wedding and there would be no dowry. He would not take Shayliss away to "for'n parts" but their home would instead remain here in Sandpoint.

The party thus delayed their departure to the East for a week. Father Zantus performed the ceremony, Ameiko hosted the reception (as a wedding gift) to Zandu and Shayliss. Shayliss is residing at the Rusty Dragon Inn and working with Bethana to help Ameiko since she now has an estate to manage until Zandu and Shayliss's new home is built.

What I think I loved just as much as all of that as a GM, was the Dwarf Wizard, Mikel Forgehammer (one of the other PCs), and the party's resident magic item forger deciding to make and provide a pair of magic rings to use as wedding bands, the cost coming from his own pocket as a gift for the couple. He stated, "Well, he's a family patriarch now, he's starting a family. That means a lot to a dwarf and I owe him respect for that, of course the rings are a gift!"

Ultimately I think he went with a pair of Rings of Protection +1, but his initial thought was to craft a Ring of Featherfalling for Shayliss since she's expecting because, "Well, since she's pregnant, that should keep the baby from being hurt if she takes a tumble..." <more laughter from the table as a whole>

If for no other reason, that (close to an hour, all told) made going out to run a game worth every minute of prep as well as all the sessions prior.

Even if it IS his first, Jelani, everyone has a first. The number of a current user's posts does not measure the effectiveness of a game still in the planning phases. I'm sure it wasn't your intent but that post reads as if you're discouraging potential players from participating.

I could just put those in a set, and plan to do so (though I have no child giant plans, alas). I won't stop making giants until we have at least a male, female, leader, and spellcaster or other unique figure from each of these types.

Wow, thanks for the direct response, Erik. The child/adolescent was more of a "flavor" concept, just leapt to mind while I was thinking about set options. Another (bright?) idea for a (less expensive?) evolution, how about Giant evolutions for the more common giant types with:

A child/adolescent giant.
A female adult giant.
A new male adult giant chief or champion (rather than a repaint).

That'd be awesome combined with the existing giant models from prior PFB sets.

Fingers crossed it isn't (just my opinion, of course, others feel free to hope for a black dragon evolution). I'd rather the next, and future, evolutions be mostly or 100% new product rather than just new versions or rebases of existing models.

If I already have a huge and small black dragon from Paizo, having other suitable minis from D&D mini packs for a large black dragon, means a lot of folks may not want to buy the BD Evolution. Wait, what am I missing? I don't recall seeing any announcement other than the red dragon pack.

I'd actually be bummed if the next pack after Reds is Black dragons since we'll already have both small and huge models. I'd rather see new stuff than a set that is 66% models we already have, even if they're new sculpts.

I would think they are not rebasing the huge black as it's almost exactly the same size as the huge white dragon from the latest evolution pack.

2) They believed there's someone high in the Magnimar government working with the cult (and not you know who).

3) Oh yeah, and they're pretty sure they're going to buy/take over Sandpoint...

better cardstock would be great).

That is the consensus of everyone I've heard mention the cards: They are a bit on the flimsy side. As Mogloth mention, even a couple of play throughs without sleeves leaves the edges of the cards marked up.

I am happy all my cards are now safely in sleeves which will reduce, but not eliminate entirely, wear on the cards. And I have 500+ waiting for the expansions to come as well.

As far as including the sheets in the next game, I'm just OCD enough to still want to print them for use and keep the included ones in pretty, shiny shape.

Not at all. I wasn't talking about anything that was your opinion. What was wrong was when you said that the company couldn't plan for both people who don't sleeve and people who do at the same time. That was the statement that I was talking about.

This style of insert isn't going to work (long term) for both sleeved and sleeveless cards without a work around. With that said, long term storage for both won't facilitate the easy "draw as needed" function of the current insert.

I'd be less pleased with a storage focused insert rather than the in-game use focused insert. To each his or her own and we can agree to disagree as we're both really coming from different angles (storage vs. utility), but again, that's my opinion/perception of the discussion.

This will simply be another game which I have some additional side storage for, but unlike some others I'll still keep/use the insert for play. It's super handy like that.

the totally mystifying inclusion of cards that we are supposed to write on

On a side note, I DO totally agree with this from a few days ago. When I looked at those cards something went "sproing" in my brain and I went..."<twitch> Lol... wuh tuh fuh? NOPE!"

Thankfully the printable characters sheets (thank the Paizo pantheon) fixed that issue, and were realized as key needs prior to formal release.

Why are you so insistent about projecting your anti-insert crusade every time someone isn't unhappy with it like you are? An insert will either have too large or too small slots depending on whether it is designed to hold sleeved cards or sleeveless cards.

I'm fine with the insert and will work around it when I have to since I decided to sleeve the cards.

IF they choose to create a sleeve friendly insert later, bully for them. Until then quit trying to make others who are satisfied unhappy.

I don't comment when people are happy about the insert...I comment when someone says something that is patently false.

I'm glad for you that you are fine with an insert that you are going to have to throw away. It bothers me that I have to pay money for something that doesn't work for everyone. The cost of that insert is non-trivial. Simple dividers solve the same issue, are just as useful for setup, require a smaller footprint for the box itself, and result in a lower cost overall.

I'm not trying to make anyone unhappy (and how would someone even go about something like that?). There is no crusade. I've said before that I think the insert, as it is, is a good start for a product new to the company; but they can do better in the future.

So, let me get this straight, my opinion (and others who like the insert) and the fact that sleeving vs. not sleeving is a personal choice is "patently false"? Whereas your opinion is "patently true"? I'm sorry it bothers you, but that doesn't make my opinion any less true or false than your own.

I'm not interested in working around dividers for regular drawing like the Thunderstone Box or other after-market storage systems. I can still use the insert to draw from while playing even if I'm not storing all of my cards in it (shuffle, place top portion of each deck in the insert, refill from storage when needed, no big deal).

You want something different, that's fine, but not everyone wants the same thing. Share your opinion but stop being so unnecessarily aggressive throwing around "none of it is close to true", "patently false", "strange idea" comments just because someone else's opinion doesn't fit your personal world view.

Except they CAN plan for it. They can implement a solution that works for everyone. Other companies do, and I hope that Paizo makes the same decision going forward.

Thinking about generating homebrew location cards for folks to print, or just proxying with existing locations and a sheet of location details?

Agan, I can't stress enough how I think the insert in the box is perfect for the game itself. I am one of those ones that is using sleeves and will eventually have to come up with an alternative, but that's fine. That is how I play the game and I'm sure and other people that use sleeves are probably in the minority. I do know that when the next box comes out, I'll just recycle my sleeves for the next game and then put all the cards back into their respective slots for storage.

Vic, you all did a great job on this game. The game is fun and the production value is great. Just keep doing what you are doing and this is going to be a good year.

I agree, the insert is outstanding. It will be less than outstanding for me after Skinsaw is released as I am choosing to sleeve my cards. But, that's my choice. Not everyone wants to deal with sleeves/likes to use them. If the game was released and issued with sleeves, I'm sure the insert would have been different, but it's not. Sleeving is a personal preference which the creators cannot plan for. If the insert were staged for sleeves, it would be very awkward for players who don't sleeve.

To everyone involved in the production of the game, well done, and thank you for being so responsive to all of our questions, and concerns, even if some of them have been overly aggressive or overly rude (not meaning you, TCliff). Everyone I know who's played so far is loving the game. I for one can't wait to see the rest of the runelord expacs, and the new base set next year (fingers crossed).

so which sleeves do people think would be the best for me to buy?

is shuffling with sleeves weird? i have never played a deck builder (or magic/card games) where I had sleeved cards so I don't know what the "feel" of it is like.

I would like to have a tighter fit and not a lot of overhang or anything, so suggestions on brands would do wonders for newbie sleevers like me!

thanks
-silentdante

I'm using Mayday Games Premium 63.5mm x 88mm (50 sleeves per pack for $2.25). They're thicker than the standard sleeves, code number MDG-7077. The top of the card sets right at the top of the sleeve and they side-shuffle so beautifully easy when sleeved in them.

I highly recommend these sleeves, if you wish to sleeve, as they barely increase the height of the cards, do not cause them to warp, cup, or bend, etc...

You have GOT to be kidding me.

Paizo had a Reefclaw figure in the pipeline but left it out of the Skull and Shackles set (where it is a fairly significant early encounter) but put it into Legends instead? So now to get the ones I need I have to crapshoot by buying boxes of Legends figures that I don't want or need in the hopes of scoring a Reefclaw, or else wait and try aftermarket?
Boy, now I'm really glad all those Iconics (which had absolutely nothing to do with the S&S AP arc) found space in the release schedule....

Lame. Utterly, completely lame.

Would it earn one more lame in that last sentence if I told you that Legends of Golarion was originally supposed to come out _before_ Skull & Shackles?

Because, honestly, I feel like your post was missing just one more smidgen of disappointment, and that could really push it over the edge into something truly special.

Mona-owned. Here's a simple solution if someone doesn't like what's in a set they don't have to buy it, or can temporarily cancel their subscription.

Fussing over the inclusion of 2 iconics... that many people want in their collection... well, it's like competing in a monkey poo flinging contest... even if you win, you're still a crap covered monkey.

Are eyes a bit wobbly, are there flaws in the mass production, am I a huge fan of the WizKids replacement process? Yes, yes, and no... but kudos Erik and team, you're still keeping me wanting the sets even if some of the models don't quite hit the mark for me.

Keep up the good work, and keep making them better. Even if I did get way too many drowning devils in S&S ( :P :) ).
