Craft Calligraphy : 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Sitting in the dusty Archive researching death and the afterlife, Doc takes copious notes in a leather-bound notebook. However, he also has another notebook that he writes in - his calligraphy wherein he mixes the written scripts of the many and sundry languages in his head into artful designs. He's not particularly creative with the words, often borrowing existing poetry or using phrases that he's heard from colleagues and friends.

But it's those phrases that remind him of his adventuring friends - and one in particular. Using one of Miyakushi's famous Minkai love poems as a starting point, he replaces various words throughout the text with their equivalents in the nearly dozen languages and scripts that he knows, creating a unique piece of art on a vellum scroll.

When he's done, he sets it aside with the satisfaction of an artist having completed what is likely his greatest piece. A piece that may very well never find its intended audience.....

Doc slumps down into the bottom of the boat and chuckles as Maria gives the Aspis agent a hand sign signifying fertility and masculinity in the ancient Jistkan Empire. His laughter makes him spit a little blood as he looks at the arrow wounds.

"I would not ... {cough} refuse treatment. ... But be forewarned, ... doctors are notoriously {cough} ... the worst patients."

He chuckles again at his own joke and spits a little more blood over the side.

Tended to and the debrief concluded, Doc and Hogo look over the letter they've received from Zarta Dralneen. Seems he's to report back to Absalom for his shift in the Vaults sorting items and documents. It promises to be a nice respite from field work, and there are many tomes on those shelves about death and the repose at the end of life that he wishes to study.

When the time comes to catch his ship out, he bids farewell to everyone. He tries to say goodbye to Maria, but it comes out awkward and weird. Hoho, however, just winds around her neck, shivers in a sign of sadness at parting, and then returns to the Doc's scalp.

"Good luck, ... my friends. Perhaps we shall ... meet again ... someday."

Not a mistake, he's got a way to do this even during a surprise round.

Seems the NPC has some shenanigans that our GM is thoroughly enjoying getting to play with. Shooting an innocent Doctor! Medics are supposed to be off limits under the Geneva Convention! 

Will save DC 13: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Doc shrugs off the magical effects of the arrows, but not the pointy effects.

Technically the familiar can only communicate with its Master in their special shared language. But Hogo gets the gist of the Captain's comment.

"I would not ... worry about the ... archer, Captain. As I trust you ... to vanquish the snake, ... I trust that ... the Wasp's bow ... will suffice."

"Hush you ... I am not ... 'gushing' over her. ... Merely commenting on ... her skill."

Hogo continues to giggle in spite of the denial.

Doc spots the Really Big Snake along the shore, and then his eyes catch sight of the archer when Maria points him out. He already knew what he was going to do, but that certainly helped.

"Captain ... go get 'em ... as they say." Through he's not really sure who says that, he's sure he's heard it somewhere.

Hogo tugs on his ear to remind him to Cast the Dang Spell, which he does immediately before moving to the middle of the boat and dropping down to take cover from the archer behind the gunwales.

As planned, casting marid's mastery  on Malachi for the epic water battle. 

Asa they board the small boat, Doc seems less sure of this plan than he did back in the nice, dry lodge. He consoles himself with the knowledge that if anything attacks them, Malachi will likely make short work of it in the water. And to help with that, he sits down for a little chat with Hogo about swapping some spells.

Swapping out burning hands and preparing marid's mastery by spending an arcane point and taking a single full round. 

That done, the pair take a position near the Captain so they can buff him up in case a fight in the water breaks out.

And to be at the stern just in case they get seasick....

"We would ... be inclined to take ..." the pause turns extra long as if he hadn't actually decided before speaking. "... the river," Doc finally finishes with a look to Malachi. "I trust ... our Captain's ... skills ... in that environment."

His vote given, he and Hogo turn to a discussion of the nuances of what they learned from the asura's passing, and he forgets to even vote on leaving a false trail or not.

No opinion on the false trail option. He's not trained in Survival, and his magics aren't useful for that. 

"One moment ... Captain ..." Doc says breathlessly as he hustles past the tengu. He gently swats the wand out of his way as he makes a beeline for the asura's body lying in the muck. He kneels down next to it while Hogo slithers down his arm to rest on one of its ugly faces. As Doc wiggles his fingers in the air above it as if playing a harp, he closes his eyes to "see" the asura's last bits of life joining the River of Souls for its expedited trip to.... Well, he'll have to ask Maria where asusas go. But for now, he's gathered what knowledge and spiritual energy that he can, and Hogo climbs back up the samsaran's arm.

"Ah, yes, ... my apologies, ... Captain. So you want this ... spell in ... this stone," he says as he rises.

He takes the wand and shakes it a few times, but nothing seems to happen. He peers at it as if not understanding before Hogo informs him that it's not a spell from his casting tradition. "Captain, ... I ..." he begins clearly embarrassed at his inability to perform before conferring with Hogo. "Oh, I can? ... Oh, yes, right ... I could try that."

UMD, Hogo guidance : 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 15 + 1 = 22

"There you go, ... my friend," he says handing the wand and ioun stone back, pleased with himself that he didn't completely botch such a minor task.

While he is an Arcanist which equals Sorc + Wizard, he casts from the Witch spell list due to one of his 2 archetypes. And shield isn't on the witch list. So UMD.  But it is on Hep's Bloodrager list, so she can do it without UMD.

Doc decides that pinning it in place might be the best way he can help his team destroy the asura. And once they do, he and Hogo will reap the knowledge of its passing. He calls upon the shadows entwining its legs to grasp it and keep it from dashing about.

I know Maria already entangled it, but this also pins it in place.

Would the shallow bog squares count as touching water but not "touching the ground" for the purposes of giving Zithembe marid's mastery? Or giving it to Malachi if he stepped into the bog, given that the creature can't be flanked anyway?

Oops, yeah, I should have remembered that from when Holan-Ji made such good use of it.

I included it based on the typo in GM's "Active Conditions" line that says "+2 to non-weapon damage".

"As they ... are not summoned ... then Hogo and I ... would appreciate this ... rare opportunity ... to study ... the passing of ... an asura.

"She did ... tell us that ... and much more ... back in the ... hideout, my friend," Doc whispers over Zithembe's stony shoulder while Hogo shiver-giggles.

Remembering that Maria said it can resist spells, Doc opts for a simple blast of icy cold.

Flurry of Snowballs. SR = No.   

Cold, Zith : 4d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 4, 5, 2) + 2 = 18
Reflex DC 18 for half. 30 foot cone aimed to the SE from the SE corner of his space misses everyone except the asura. 

"It moves ... very quickly," he says very slowly even as he ambles over to stand closer to Zith and the Captain, pulling out a wand as he does.

Draw wand of mage armor.  

Arcana DC 20 + SL: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29

Doc watches the asura alight on the ground, blurry and with multiple images of itself. He's pretty sure that it's the standard wizard spell mirror image, and decides to simply undo the effect. He ambles forward to get a good view of the creature before casting, just to be safe. (Well, "safe" meaning he hopes Malachi and Zithembe move forward so he's behind them.)

Let's hope its CL isn't > 16!

And just to be safe, he takes a look at the blur effect to see if he's familiar with that, too.

@Team: he could probably also dispel magic on the blur next round, too. But that would use up all his 3rd rank level spells. Let me know your thoughts if you care. 

I'll just swap in Dispel magic. Always a good option.

With Hogo's appetite for magic sated, and Doc's appetite for knowledge from the beyond at least tempered for the time, the two listen to Maria's recount of what they're about to face.

<"Her knowledge is always quite impressive, isn't it, my friend?"> he asks Hogo in their personal language.

"<No, I'm not looking to 'settle down!' How could you think that?"> he shoots back to his familiar's teasing reply.

The rest of the team could be forgiven for being confused as Doc rolls his eyes and huffs at the little vine who then slithers down to the floor.

Vibrating slightly in mirth, Hogo quickly crosses the room and clambers up onto their second-favorite humanoid's slim elven shoulder where they promptly curl up to take a nap.

He had to burn an arcane point to replace his prepared 3rd level spell with speak with dead. Since that's not likely to be very useful any longer, he'll burn another point to swap something else in before combat. But I'll wait to decide what until we hear what Maria has for us.

"No, Hogo, I do not ... believe I have ... ever met your friend, ... 'Scrooby,'" Doc replies after some furious scritching upon his bald blue pate.

"We propose ... to remain here ... to speak with ... this one, while ... the rest of you ... seek out Embele," he informs everyone as he stands from beside the corpse.

He continues with a dismissive wave of his hand. "As long as ... Embele and the other ... soldiers stay away from the ... spooky castle ruined guard post, ... we can do both ... at the same time, I think." Hogo meanwhile nods enthusiastically.

<"Do you have ... someone who can ... escort me to get ... the scroll?"> he asks Ungala as he moves to leave the cramped confines of her hideout.

It'll be fine, I'm sure. I doubt this is the combat scene, just a Gathering or Tracking scene, and the rest of you can likely handle that quite fine without him.  Honestly, in-character, Doc is so oblivious and Hogo so greedy for magic that they'd likely just go walking out the door to get the scroll without really consulting the team.

Doc and Hogo dutifully follow Maria and the others, but studiously avoid the Grandfrogger's seagull friends for fear they might pluck the suture vine off Doc's head to use Hogo to build a nest with! Safely in the underground secret lair, Doc shoulders his way over to the corpse and initially offers to assist in the burial ritual before another thought strikes him.

"Hogo, would the ... Lady of Graves ... object to us ... conversing with ... this man?"

Hogo initially shakes their tiny thorns in the negative, but scritches out a more complete reply.

"Hmm... yes. But perhaps a ... problem easily .... resolved."

He switches focus to their host and without thinking begins conversing with her in the local tongue.

I wanted to make sure that Pharasma would be okay with that, and per Inner Sea Gods it's a granted spell in her Exalted boon, so I presume so.  Doc would want to go buy the scroll of speak with dead, then take 3 hours to feed it to Hogo thus adding it to his familiar's spells known, then cast it. If we don't have that much time, or the party objects to the plan, I'll pass.

Kn Local, Hogo : 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 11 + 1 = 13

Doc meanwhile heads in the exact opposite direction. Until Hogo helpfully points out that maybe he should follow Maria instead of going down that sketchy alley.

"Of course ... the most dangerous snakes ... endemic to this region ... " Doc starts a lecture on the local legless fauna when Hogo swiftly cuts him off. Again.

"Are you sure ... he was? ... Hmmm ... Ah well, yes ... I suppose ...."

Kn Local, Hogo: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 11 + 1 = 25

He considers instead what they know of the local economy and Harvacus' financial situation.

"I seem to recall ... that you invest ... in the local ... plantations. Perhaps the Society ... could arrange for ... work there ... for your family?" he offers.

"How can we ... prevail upon you to ... abrogate your ... contractual obligations?"

Big words take longer to say, so this sentence feels like it takes forrrrevvver to get through. At least to the rest of you. Doc doesn't even notice, and Hogo is too busy pruning their thorns.

I'm glad you're back and a bit refreshed. It was fun playing Zarnel alongside Corona again. Looking forward to seeing who you bring to this table, as all your characters are always a joy.

Doc and Hogo remain near the back of the room. They don't have much to add, and Hogo gently reminds Doc that he's not very persuasive. Doc being Doc ignores the advise of Pharasma's emissary and tries to pitch in anyway.

"Those relics ... my friend mentioned ... are extremely potent ... necromantic foci. ... " He had intended to relate the magical theory that he suspects is at work, hoping that would convince the druid not to use them or work with those interested in acquiring them. Well, that's his plan anyway.

Diplo to Aid : 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (9) - 2 = 7

But thankfully Hogo quickly cuts him off.

"Maria, if ... we may," Doc says as he and Hogo lean in over the studious elf's shoulder.

Linguistics, guidance : 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 14 + 1 = 32

"Hmmm, I think ...

My apologies, ... Maria, Hogo is ... confused." He gives the vine a side-eye glare to which it stiffens before climbing over to Maria's shoulder. Doc raises an eyebrow but lets his little friend's fit of pique slide without further comment.

"As I was saying. ... I believe ... the missive states ..."

Hogo slithers down to Doc's wrist and says ... something. Doc nods and raises his hand, and the tiny thorns of the sentient suture vine lightly prick the Captain's shoulder granting him the a blessing and guidance from Pharasma.

Yeah, it's not needed mechanically, but [i]they[/i[ don't know that. 

They don't look right either. I was granted 17 1e replays when they closed out the campaign, but now my account shows only 8 for 1e. Plus the 4 2e and 6 SFS replays now on my account tab, the numbers don't add up.

And how will they report using replays from other sources, like faction boons, GM stars and Infinite Narratives, or those 2e replays that some GMs can give out?

As the Doctor begins to walk away with the elves, Hogo begins furiously tapping him on the head. Having realized Malachi's true intent, the viney familiar explains the real plan to the oft-clueless genius.

He informs the elves that he must consult with his employer, but that he will catch up to them in their office, and that he expects them to have everything ready for the audit.

Doc looks up from examining the tablet. "This relic is ... indeed likely one of the ... ancient Twelve Rites that Shinri ... had discussed with you. ... A fascinating history, these ... particular relics..." he begins, but cuts himself off at Malachi's stern look and apparent "order."

"You need one of my associates to help you find them, yes? Well what are you waiting for? Time is money!"

"Ye.. yes, ... sir. Perhaps I should," he says as he moves (slowly) to escort the elves. "Naturally ... a complete assessment would ... require a thorough ... audit of ... all staff records."

As he moves off with the elves, the good Doctor can be heard describing - in slooooow and precise detail - exactly what he'll be looking for and what records he'll be needing to see.

Using Appraise to assess each employees "worth" to the organization. 

Appraise, Take 10, Hogo's guidance : 10 + 10 + 1 = 21

Ahem. There's one other "wizard" here, too, you big dumb bird. Actually, he's the closest to a wizard, as an arcanist is a wizard/sorcerer hybrid class.

"If we may, ... my friend," Doc says as he takes the tablet from the Trade Prince. Hogo slides down to Doc's wrist and wraps them self around like a bracelet. The samsaran 'wizard' focuses into and through the tablet, looking for auras and signs of its magical provenance.

Detect Magic, Spellcraft, Hogo's guidance : 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 15 + 1 = 29

Hey, does Malachi have a covert-ops call sign? Or a cover identity that he uses with his less-than-trustworthy trading partners?

Downstairs, Doc stares at the tiger until it slowly dawns on him exactly whom Hep is referring to. "Hepsubia ...," he begins but never gets the chance to finish before the guard intervenes. He shrugs helplessly and follows the rest upstairs.

There, he waits to allow the Pirate Captain Trade Prince and the Paladin tiefling trader to begin. He's ready to lend a hand evaluating the documents and assessing the value of their investments, if called upon, though.

Hehe. I think he just doubles the result, right? ;)

Doc thanks Maria for the scroll, and you can almost see the wheels turning in his bald blue head as he considers ways to use it. Hogo, meanwhile, clambers down to take a look also. It's unclear, but the drop of sap on the end of a thorn might well be them salivating over the potential magical meal.

"Maria, Hogo wishes to know ... if they may ... ingest the scroll later, ... should it remain unused."

If so, they'll do so during next preparations and add it to his Spells Known. 

In the meantime, he tucks the scroll safely out of the vine's reach, straightens his robes and follows the other "investors" into the guild building.

Doc tries to follow along as Hepsubia talks about the box, trying to wrap his head around the idea and begins to calculate the size of the box needed. Then when she switches to the stone of silence idea, he's left hanging as he totally doesn't even get the joke.

Hogo begins to explain it but then stops when they realize the humor won't translate into their unique shared language.

Doc watches the back and forth and occasionally begins to speak, only to have the two very strong personalities keep right on going at each other.

"I ... "

"He is ..."

"Are you ..."

Finally Hogo hops over to Maria's shoulder to get her attention. They gently poke one of her long ears with a tiny thorn in a friendly gesture.

"Ahem, yes, ... thank you, Hogo." He makes an effort to continue straight away so as not to lose his chance.

"I think ... we would be more likely to succeed ... as 'investors' than as ... burglars. The latter is ... certainly not my ... strong suit. Having a local with us ... could also lend ... credence to the tale," he concludes with a sweep of his long-fingered hand toward the Grandfrogger.

Hogo quickly gives Maria a little bow and a shrug of a thorn as if to apologize for their siding with Malachi before hopping back over to Doc.

Hey, sorry I haven't chimed in. Was at a con all weekend. Even got to play next to Alex for a game, and played with one of my players from my SF PBP games. Back now.

Doc O'Mayga sits in a chair with his back to the wall surveying the crowd and chatting amiably with Hogo about the various patrons and what they think their souls would taste like on the way to the afterlife - party members excluded, of course.

When Maria sits down, Doc looks up and smiles at the colleague he feels the most in common with intellectually and temperamentally. Hogo raises one end of their body and bows to the elven maiden then scritches something to Doc in their shared language.

"Ah, yes, ... thank you for the ... reminder, my friend." he digs around in the pack resting haphazardly on the floor and pulls out a small bundle of arrows wrapped in a red ribbon. "The Society Quartermaster ... was holding these ... for me. ... I don't really know why. ... But I thought ... you could make ... better use of them ... than I," he says as he presents the arrows to her.

A small tag attached to the ribbon reads "Magical Flaming Arrows. Hold for Dr. Omega." "They ... misspelled my name," he adds with a chuckle when Maria examines the tag. "Quite ironic,... though, as I intend for this ... form to be my ... final one ... with the Lady of Graves' blessing, ... of course," he explains with a flourish of his hand across his body and a nod to Pharasma's emissary, Hogo.

He turns his attention to Guaril and Fola and ponders the assignment.

"Sooooo, to stop the ... Aspis from releasing the ... asura, we are to ... burglarize the Prospector's Guild and ... steal materials that ... implicate them in wrongdoings." He pauses much longer than normal, and just when someone else begins to speak, he adds, "Commit a crime ... to expose a crime ... to prevent evil. Yes?" he asks as he looks to the more lawful members - Zithembe and Maria - for their thoughts. He's not too worried what the Pirate Captain and the Avatar Princess of Chaos would think. But he's not at all sure (and so quite curious) what the Grandfrogger will say about this set up.

No worries! TBH, I kinda did the same thing to one of my tables. Posted a skill check challenge on Saturday, and I'm just now getting around to evaluating their posts. Been a busy couple days, even though I'm off work.

Chronicle received, all good.

Doc and Hogo have been updated to level 6. He bought a runestone of power Level 1 for an extra level 1 spell slot per day. He got his 3rd level spells and bought a few scrolls which Hogo promptly devoured.

I also found a limited purchase item on one of his older chronicles for +1 flaming arrows (limit 5) for 167 gp. He's never going to use them, and the cost is quite small. So he's buying them and gifting them to Maria. If she shoots things more effectively, that keeps him alive!

I had not heard ... that the Paracountess baked ... cookies for her parties. ... Rather that they are ..." Doc pauses as Hogo frantically scratches something into the samsaran's scalp. "Aaahhhh.... those kind of ... 'cookies.'" He gives Maria a strange look as if seeing something new and unexpected in the (relatively speaking) young elven maiden.

He ponders the debate about reopening the ruins for a good long time before speaking.

"The hazard was from ... the earthquake. ... Which was caused by ... the orb. ... Which is now dormant.

"Reestablishing the monastery ... could bring great ... credit, prestige, ... and wealth ... to your island. And a rising tide ... lifts all landing craft ... I think the saying goes," he says looking to their Pirate Merchant Sea Captain to confirm he got that right.

Diplo to Aid : 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3

But it seems no one was really listening to him anyway.

"I wish there were more people like you in the world."

"Ah, but there are. ... Pathfinders are ... numerous and everywhere." Doc gives a wide slow sweep of his arm beckoning towards the horizon across the sandy beach while Hogo stands on end and mimics the movement, too. "Though we can ... always use more ... who wish to help, ... especially in looking after such ... relics and ruins."

Arcana: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21
For a Faction Card goal to "recruit a named NPC scholar, knowledgeable spellcaster, or similar figure to the Dark Archive" if either of them qualify. If not, eh, whatever.

Doc and Hogo swim out from behind the viewing stands to examine the wights and kurobozu. He takes note of what the Awesome Hep and Amazing Maria (or does he have that backwards?) have found. Then he swims slowly away for a look around the rest of the monks' prison, to see if there is any other information about what led to them being interred here.

Perception, Guidance : 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 10 + 1 = 26

Eventually he returns to the party, though it's obvious he's a bit sad to have to leave this incredible undersea realm.

"Should we take ... the orb ... back to the village? ... To the Society? ... Or leave it here?"

He mostly looks to Maria as she always seems to have the most "inspired" insights.

I'm fine with that too. But...

Doc O'Mayga levels to 6 with this chronicle. There's not much to it except 3rd level spells, but I would need a couple days to get that done and updated (I can RP in the meantime easily enough.)

And does leveling him affect APL and any prep GM has already done?

I don't think we need both Malachi AND Holan-Ji. Although the two of them together would certainly be a hoot, combats would be .... brief. And I certainly don't mind playing Doc again.

I have other characters in tier, but only one that's lower than 6 - my level 4 surfer-dude merman bard-oracle.

Doc watches as the monk tries to steal Zithembe's very life force. He draws out that black shard again and focuses its necromantic energies on the kurobozu forcing the undead to act as he commands it.

Casting Boneshaker. Using void shard and an Arcane point. DC 20 Fort save, and the target takes a -2 on the save. On a failure, he moves along the path of the Red Arrow and DOES provoke from everyone. I put him there so that he couldn't just 5' step back up to anyone and full attack/flurry.  

All the kitties are laying on their backs with their fuzzy tummies exposed for pettings!

Doctor O'Mayga and Hogo watch in awe as the Tako-Tengu (with help from his friends) turns the two undead into dead-dead.

"Falehetu. The keepers ... that you ... despoiled are ... destroyed. ... Show yourself."

"Hogo, ... may I have the ... spell of seeing the ... invisible, please?"

Hogo and the Doc commune for a few seconds, lost to the outside world in their transfer of magical knowledge.

Full round action (that provokes) and an Arcane Point to swap web out for see invisibility.

Ummm... Just gonna wait to see what comes out of the other end of that blender before I commit to acting. 

@GM: Can you put the token for Orange back on the map at the spot he dropped? I've got a spell that I might try to use on his remains. And if/when the other two drop, can we leave them on the map also, but with some way to designate that they're dead-dead?

Doc's connection to Zithembe's Archmage spirit feels strong, but he opts to stay back and try the crossbow first. At least until the Falehetu reveals himself. He swims up behind the stands* and fires at the cute wight in the orange collar horrific undead in the middle.

* Not meta, but I seem to recall that this is an arena and the striated boxes were viewing stands / bleachers, correct? If so, he's basically taking cover behind one and firing over the top of the stands.
