Season of Ghosts

Several of you know what these things lurking in the arena are - wights, though these seem a little different than typical specimens. That said, Maria recalls that wights don't have any unique resistances and Dr. O'mayga knows that they can sap away the life force of living creatures - so much so that a creature slain by a wight in such a way will rise as a wight themselves. He also recalls that wights tend to be strong-willed and relatively hardy, but not quite so agile.

Hepsubia also recalls an interesting weakness - using spells such as Raise Dead on a wight can potentially destroy them outright. Using such a spell in this way also doesn't consume any components...somehow.

No resistances beyond typical undead traits; Create Spawn & Energy Drain; Will > Fort > Reflex; Resurrection Vulnerability.

Maria begins a complicated set of gestures, ”So not all of you were with us, but on a recent mission we dealt with some ‘time’ shenanigans. I learned a short little ritual to harness that power one more time and I figured I should use it now, when we have the advantage. You should be able to swim quicker, attack faster, dodge better and overall just be awesome. I grant this gift to all of you, skipping myself as I really don’t need the speed.”

Casting Haste on everyone but herself

Using the boon, Touched by Time:
You have passed through time-distorting portals in Uringen, and residual magic from that experience clings to you. You may cast either haste or slow as a spell-like ability, using your character level as your caster level and Charisma as your key ability score. When you use this boon, cross it off your Chronicle sheet.

Season of Ghosts

Deciding that now is as good a time as any to make use of a ritual learned on a previous mission, Maria makes a complicated set of gestures. Everyone, sans herself, suddenly feels faster!

Moved everyone up on the map a bit; meant to do so earlier.

Target yourself with the haste @Maria - it doesn't do much for the Grandfrogger since he doesn't make many (if any) attacks.

The Grandfrogger croaks once - a deep, almost warbling sound in the underwater school. "Together, we must work. Guard each other, we will."

Everyone has the Escape Route feat for the next 3 rounds - movement through spaces adjacent to/through an ally will not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Season of Ghosts

As Maria grants most of the group a hastening power, The Grandfrogger extolls the virtues of teamwork and guarding each other's backs.

The three wights, rather than immediately rush into the fray, all fall back a bit and adopt defensive positions. While clearly hostile, they're also not as mindless as some undead - they seem to be trying to get the measure of the group.

The wights then make their moves. Red shimmies over just a little before attempting to slam Zithembe with a rotting fist, but the shabti easily avoids the strike. Orange attempts to do some aquatic acrobatics to get past Malachi and come to Red's aid but isn't quite agile enough and gets sliced in half for his efforts! Hepsubia zips in to flank Blue with Zithembe and takes a swing with her sword, but the wight dodges it. But Blue can't dodge the shabti quite so easily and suffers two solid blows as Zith takes advantage of the flank! Malachi then finishes the unfortunate wight off with a well-placed gore attack and follows up by pounding Red into a fine paste with a pair of hammer strikes!

Doctor O'Mayga and Hogo watch in awe as the Tako-Tengu (with help from his friends) turns the two undead into dead-dead.

"Falehetu. The keepers ... that you ... despoiled are ... destroyed. ... Show yourself."

"Hogo, ... may I have the ... spell of seeing the ... invisible, please?"

Hogo and the Doc commune for a few seconds, lost to the outside world in their transfer of magical knowledge.

Stunning Fist vs. Zith: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29

With the three keepers defeated, Dr. O'mayga takes the opportunity to commune with Hogo and alter his memorized magics. He also calls out to Falehetu, knowing that the creature has to be somewhere very close by.

Several seconds tick by...and then the entire area begins to shake as another earthquake strikes! While this one seems smaller in scope than the first, it's still strong enough to kick up silt and sediment and risk throwing you all off-balance.

Everyone must make a DC 14 Reflex or be thrown off-balance by the seismic ripples. The water fills with precipitate, giving creatures concealment. Normally there'd be a Perception penalty and a Fort save required here as well but everyone's got a pair of underwater goggles that negates all that.

Just as the shaking begins to die down, Dr. Omayga's call-out is answered as a gray-skinned, emaciated creature appears from behind the northwest set of bleachers and moves - rather awkwardly as though off-balance - towards Zithembe.

"Freedom...and sustenance! I've waited so long..." it hisses as it hauls off and delivers a punch right to the shabti's chest. While the actual punch doesn't really hurt that much, there's a strange power behind it that threatens to sap his mental fortitude and leave him reeling!

Zithembe takes 6 damage and needs to make a DC 18 Fort x2 - the first to avoid being stunned for 2 rounds and the second to avoid taking 1d4 ⇒ 2 Wisdom damage.

Kn. Religion (DC 16):

Kurobozus, also called black monks, are jealous undead that arise when a monk dies under circumstances that violate the precepts of his or her monastic training.

The 'pause' was mainly for dramatic effect; the earthquake happens after 2 rounds and then Falehetu makes his move (and happened to roll really well on his initiative) so Round 3 on the tracker is accurate. Zith vs. Concealment (20% Miss; Low Misses): 1d100 ⇒ 48

Zithembe is thrown off-balance by the seismic activity and though not stunned by the sudden punch, he does feel a bit of his mental strength wane from the blow. He takes a moment to right himself before retaliating with a strike from the tiger fork; while it doesn't end up piercing as deep as he initially thought (crit not confirmed) the kurobozu still suffers every bit of the damage that *is* dealt.

The Grandfrogger is also thrown off-balance but he finds it somewhat less troublesome as he conjures a blessing for his allies. He too recognizes the kurobozu for what it is, recalling that they have no particular weaknesses or vulnerabilities.

Hepsubia vs. Concealment (20% Miss; Low Misses): 1d100 ⇒ 89

Hepsubia manages to swim around behind Falehetu; the black monk throws a punch her way as she does but she manages to dodge it. She strikes out, easily connecting and doing some damage even with her sword. (Where did the lightning damage come from? Did I miss Hep starting up Weapon Song?)

Deciding that now is the time to act, Maria takes aim with the underwater crossbow and fires off another bolt! But even with the kurobozu being off-balance, the shot misses.

Season of Ghosts

Feel free to backfill the discussion about the orb if you like; mainly wanted to post this before heading to bed.

After you ensure that there's nothing left down here to explore, you briefly discuss what to do with the orb and then, decision made, head back up to the surface and Wavebreak Haven. When you return, you're given a hero's welcome by Remendi, Zulfibha, and the others.

"Friends, thank you for all that you've done," Remendi remarks once the crowd clears off a bit and after you explain what you found down in the ruins. "I'm sorry again about my outburst earlier. I know that you had no way of knowing what would happen when you brought the orb close to the island. And you absolutely could have turned around and sailed away, but you took responsibility for what happened even though it wasn't your fault. I wish there were more people like you in the world."

The undine leader sighs and shoots a glance at Zulfibha. "It also seems to me that these ruins, even cleared of that foul undead menace, are simply too dangerous to be poking around in. I'll have to inform the others that they're off-limits from now on."

"Remendi...I understand your worry and why you feel that way," Zulfibha responds, gently laying a hand on her wife's arm, "but I feel that there could be much to learn if we keep studying what we can from the writings that survived the monastery's destruction. Those combat arts haven't been learned or taught for centuries - wouldn't it be wonderful if we could change that?"

"Eh, you've got an opportunity here, yes" the captain tells the local undines. "Our Society has great interest in your old ruins, yes. Could bring you much wealth. Lift boats, gift horses, all of that yes!"

Eh, maybe they're not interested in coin.

The tako-tengu shrugs, his tentacles rippling disturbingly.

Season of Ghosts

Even though Maria made her roll as an Aid Another, I'll take it as the primary.

"Well...it's true that we often need the knowledge and experiences of the past to chart a better future," Remendi muses. "Coin and prestige aren't of much concern to us here at Wavebreak Haven - between what the land and the sea provide, our lives are comfortable enough. That said, there are occasional dangers...so learning some manner of self-defense isn't a bad idea. And..." she turns to Zulfibha, a most serious expression on her face, "...if Zulfibha wishes it, perhaps she could act as liaison between Wavebreak Haven and the Pathfinder Society?"

Zulfibha smiles, gently. "It would be an honor. Rhakned should be consulted too, as he picked up the techniques the quickest of us all. Maybe he would be willing to teach the others."
______________

With things now settled at Wavebreak Haven, you depart - with Zulfibha and Rhakned in tow - and return to Niswan to give your report. Venture-Captain Melipdra is delighted at your safe return and listens to the details of your mission, as well as Zulfibha and Rhakned's own testimonies, with great interest.

"Well, I'm very thankful that no one was seriously injured or worse! I suppose it's easy to forget that locks aren't only to keep us out, but sometimes to keep things in," she muses. "With Falehetu no longer a threat, the orb shouldn't be needed as a lock - but given everything that happened, I'd like to send a few of our senior agents back to the monastery ruins to make sure it's properly secured."

"Most of all, I'm thankful that your people are interested in reviving the Monastery of Unbreaking Waves," she continues, addressing Zulfibha and Rhakned. "It will be wonderful to have all four elements represented in the Houses of Perfection once more! That should also please Ashasar, I'd imagine, restoring balance in that way. Oh! I'll have to arrange a tournament with the new house, though I admit that I've never sparred underwater before. I look forward to seeing their techniques...and I hope to see the rest of you there too, because you're all absolutely getting invitations!"
