I would not want to play in a game/campaign that did not have equal amounts combat and role-playing (and in that skills). I would agree that some skills are useless most of the time but at the same time I know players get equal satisfaction making a difficult skill check as they do rolling a nat 20. If no role-playing (skills) why not just play a board game then?

I have to agree with Aaron Gillespie on this. I have read all the modules cover to cover and although I agree there are some interesting if not outstanding encounters I have never been a fan of incorporating real world into my fantasy game (playing since 1981). I will also be on the look out for alternate storylines if and when I ever run this campaign.
I always use a screen. I think it adds a measure of secrecy to the game. Also it hides any notes I might be taking and keeps the players honest so they do not feel the need to peek. If I ever feel the need to fudge a roll behind my screens it is always in the favor of the players.
I do not watch Dragon Ball Z but wouldn't an air elemental companion fit the bill?
Well to start a GOOD gamer can do almost anything with any character IMO. Maybe you are not very good at playing rogues, or have had some bad experiences. Therfore that has tainted your opinion on the class. I hate playing eleves, simply because I have had bad luck when I have in the past. My rogue in our SCAP, as we reached the mid to higher levels, could handle his own and then some. That was point. Sorry if I did not explain it well enough for you to understand.
Without adding to much more to all the very good points that have been made, I would just like to add that I love playing Rogues (3.5 & Pathfinder). Probably my favorite class to play aside from wizards. I played a rogue in the SCAP for 20 + levels and had a blast. I also remember reading somewhere that Gary Gygax himself said his favorite class to play was a rogue. Just my two coppers.

Sorry to say this but I did not care for it. Granted I only got about half way through it before I set it down, but it just did not keep my attention. I reminded me a little of Orcs by Stan Nichols. Another book I was really excited about, and one I did finish, and it started out strong with a great intro scene and the fleshing out of these intelligent yet ruthless Orcs, seeing things through their eyes, and then they just turn into a bunch of ho hum characters that in no way continue to remind you that they are Orcs through out the second half of the book. It was like they became to civilized. Just my two coppers. Bandit of LV

In the last few campaigns I played in and DM'ed we used a lot of background music. Not just for the battle sequences (which were awesome) but for traveling, entering a great city, sailing, etc. I know there are other threads that discuss music options. This will help with some audio, as for visual I am a minis and tact-tile fan. I like to try to create three dimensional models so I dont know if I can be of much help there. Bandit of LV
I have a half-elf "role-playing" "face of the party" type rogue that I played in the SCAP. Tomaz Shade by name. And by the time we were done I had more feats and skills than I could shake a stick at. Don't get me wrong he could not hit the side of a barn in the lower levles but was devestating later on in the game. I agree with the earlier posts - don't power game, go with what you think you will enjoy playing. Bandit of LV

Hey I love the stat keeping aspect of the game. I am currently DMing, but when I am playing I keep track of my Total Crits, Saving Throw successes, and my Skill Check successes. At first it was just for fun during down time at the table but then it became very handy in helping me decide where to put my skill points. Keep it up! Bandit of LV
Because Dennis, we have a small piece of paper in this country called the Constitution, which allows us to express our rights under its First Amendment. I for one think 4E is horrible. But does that mean I can't chime in from time to time on issues involving it? I think not. It seems to me that the most hateful people on these boards are those trying to defend, unsuccessfully I might add, 4E. "Stop saying bad things about 4E!" Being a huge R.A. Salvatore fan I have grown less and less enthralled with his continued series. The Transition Series: The Orc King being the latest. He might be a victim of his own success. I mean how many more opponents can there be for the unbeatable Drizzt Du Urden? Here's hoping he can come up with an unexpected twist in his next book,The Pirate King, to get me to buy back in. Actually if a number of fans believe that WotC has abandoned them then they have in fact done so. At least that portion of the "fanbase". I for one have abandoned WotC. On the other hand if WotC's sales are as positive as you claim then I would relate that to 4e attracting a new "video game" genre of players as well as keeping the interest of some existing players. After pouring over the PHB 4E and running a session of Keep on the Shadowfell, I will be happily returning to 3.5. I have enough material to carry my group indefinately. Bandit of LV
My first gut reaction to the new 4.0 edition is in fact my last reaction. There is very little, if anything I like about 4.0. I have ran the first 4-5 encounters of "Keep on the Shadowfell," and I wont even go so far as to say it is the "new" edition of D&D, it is a cross between D&D Minis and a fantasy board game. (IMHO) Every new edition that has come out in the past took the exsiting D&D game and made, arguably, improvements to the game. As I played / DM'ed through this module I kept finding myself asking the same thing; "Why?"

I am playing a straight wizard, 18lvl. He is from a minor noble family of Sasserine and is secretly part of the Seeker faction. I would not have changed a thing as I have had a blast playing "Alonzo Kent." We did however have a member of our group play a chaotic good pc, while the rest of the group was lawful neutral, and that caused a bit of a problem at times. Unlike SCAP and AoW having the majority of the group playing with "loose morals" or a more neutral viewpoint pays off in the long run. Bandit of LV
I came across this article on MSN Slate today as I was sitting in a training seminar. Yes I was not paying much attention at the time. The writer of this article, Erik Sofage, takes the oppurtunity to really rip Gary Gygax and Dungeons and Dragons in a way that I have never seen before. He does not go into how D&D is a satanic game or any of the other classic rips on D&D, but more on the game and its creator. IMHO he really "misses the mark." Absolutely not. I didn't want to get TOO into the details of Vanthus's obsession with Lavinia, since incest is a pretty mature topic to be bandying about in Dungeon, but yeah. Vanthus is sexually attracted to his sister. This attraction is not something Lavinia's really aware of until, probably, Tides of Dread's climax. She's CERTAINLY not into him, though. She's a good girl! Anyway, by skirting the topic in print, though, we allow a GM to downplay that angle if it's inapropriate for his game, or to focus on it more if it isn't. In my opinion that that was a poor choice made by Dungeon magazine. Was it really necessary to add incest into a role playing game by a publisher? It's not as if DMs and players alike can't come up with their own ideas in which the bad guys deal with the heroes. I never have. But like I said .... bad call, bad judgement. Bandit of LV
Bandit of LV I'm glad to hear you and Stabbity have reforged your group anew, Bandit. Like an above poster stated, the initial impression given was that it might have been something to do with the players - until later Stabbity clarified the circumstances. And do enjoy the Tide - and regail the boards with the tales from your table as they progress through the campaign please! I will definately try. Our group currently consists of the following: Human Wizard 7Darfallen Monk/Druid 7 Dwarven Cleric of Zilchius (sp) 7 Daggerspell Mage 7 Without giving to much away, the adventure has been a wild ride and we have been in good spirits until we were rather unceromoniusly dumped on the Isle of Dread. Lets vote on which of the three adventure paths has been the most memorable/enjoyable/fun etc to play or DM. If this type of thread has already been posted please forgive me. I also added the type of charater I played in each. Here is how I would rank them; 1. Shackled City Adventure Path - Tomaz Shade Half-Elf Rogue/Swashbuckler.

In defense of Stabbity Death I was also at this table but I had left one session prior to it collapsing. The game became entirely no fun anymore. There was no player cohesion, the DM was not enjoying himself which was very evident and rubbed off on the players. I stepped away because as you all know D&D is a very time consuming hobby and why spend so much time doing something you do not enjoy. I personally have no interst in finishing the campaign because as has already been stated it would be very anticlimactic. Kill Kyuss or not. Yawn.

I am currently playing a paladin in Expedition to Castle Ravenloft. I suggest that you arm yourself with death ward spells or scrolls as soon as possible, along with cure disease. I wont say anymore than that. :) Also, if your DM will allow it, there are several prestige classes specifically written in this campaign that are available and are a perfect fit for this adventure. I agree with most of what has been said in this thread regarding the Warlock. I played a Warlock in the AoW campaign from 1st - 20th level. I was actually a 4th level fighter / 16th level Warlock.

I agree with you that there is a problem with the fact that a new pc class and abilities have been added to the core rules and that those same core rules have not been completely updated to incorprate that fact. Once again the challenge still remains that not only are the "Complete" set of books widely accepted at the majority of gaming tables, but also that an NPC such as a warlock is being used in a WotC product such as Expedition to Castle Ravenloft. I would not compare psionics, rarely used if ever in a WotC product, to the eldritch blast.

I would like a little feed back on a question that arose at our gaming table last night. Our group is playing Expedition to Castle Ravenloft and in Strahd's castle we ran across a trio of warlocks. The cleric proceeded to cast "protection from energy 12:eldritch" on the paladin. This was not allowed by the DM because a warlock's eldritch blast, although it is described as being a magical "energy" on page 7 CAr, is not one of the five energies listed under the protection from energy spell description on page 266 of the PHB.

What level did your PC's start at and what levels did they finish at? Would you suggets upping the CR's oor were your players overly powerful? - G
I'm actually allowing my players to start at 5th level. We will just be finishing up the Shackled City Adventure Path in the next 2 weeks and this is going to be sort of a fun shorter adventure before we start the Age of Worms Adventure Path early next year. -G
I am currently preparing to run the Red Hand of Doom Adventure which I believe will be an awesome experience for my players. Brings back memories of the "Against the Giants" and "Slave Lords" adventures of old. Anyways back to my question; has anyone began running the adventure, finished the adventure? If so do you have any information to offer, tidbits of advice, did you make any changes that you thought enhanced any the adventure?

I had my four pieces laminated as one at Kinkos. It was around $50. I know! It does look awesome however. I also did the same thing with my Faerun map, another $20. A friend of mine told me that Office Max might be a little cheaper....Good luck! -Bandit of LV |
