What is the starting level?

What would be your suggestion for Favored Enemy/Terrain for a Ranger?

Should I bother to keep track of mundane ammo?

Not the GM but since it's the skull and shackles AP, I would say humans for favored Enemy and Water for Favored Terrain make sense.

Hi,

Here is my submission for this S&S game.
Aula Hearbreaker is a former chelaxian marine trainee turned pirate (crunch wise, a human swashbuckler).
The full character background and personality is in the alias. I did not take any of the campaign traits but still took two Shackles liked ones.
Please, do not hesitate to comment on it.

I'm currently involved in other long term PbP, the longest started nearly 4 years ago (a Kingmaker AP going at a very slow rate) and another more than one year ago (a Razor Coast PbP), meaning I can commit to PbPs.

Female Human Swashbuckler

Acting on initiative of 23

Yes, and if anyone pays up, they will just ask more and more. It stops here.

Seeing nothing good will happen from that situation, Aula suddenly changes gears. Gone is the frightened woman as her raised hands turn into fists that crash on both size of the mob leader's head.

Two weapons attack on the mob leader. That would be the one talking to us and telling us to cough up but I can't find its name in the previous posts. I've included the +2 for humans.
attack 1 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 + 2 = 19, damage 1d3 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
off hand 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 + 2 = 15, damage 1d3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 2 = 6

Female Human Swashbuckler

Satisfied she is in good position to take down one of the bullies and protect the rest of the group, Aula pretends to get a hold on herself and still sniffing, stops her whining.

"I...I'm trying. I'm just so frightened. I've got nothing to pay, they took everything I had.", she says, opening her leather-clad hands to show her peacefull intentions.

As long as no one make a threatening movement, she will play with it. But Aula is still ready to pounce.

Female Human Swashbuckler

Aula has slept through of the night, tired by her first day up the rigs. As she is woken up, she stretches and look for her inmates, reassured to find them close to her.

Coming up on deck in front, she spots the ambush and gets ready to act.
As the sailors move threateningly towards her, she sorts of stumbles towards them, raising her hands as to protect her.

"Please, don't kill me. I haven't done anything to you and I can't stant being beaten again. I'll do everything to help you.", she says, half-crying.

Bluff check to close to the one in front while appearing harmless. Bluff1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 2 = 25, favored ennemy humans is included.

Hoping her strategy has worked, she gets ready to strike the closest human
Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Hi there,

No no, please don't. I'm more having time to be online and update myself with what's going on; more or less players won't have that big an effect upon that, and *most* of you have special skills that the others don't (which is why I selected you all). Moreso, my distractions ARE being worked out, it just isn't able to be done as fast as I had thought, which I do apologise for. Please, if you can still post, don't go away prematurely.

Ok, I just did not want to be a bother and delay the game. I'll jump back right in.

Female Human Swashbuckler

While the keelhauling goes on, Aula tries to still herself against the likely result, remembering her last days in the chelaxian navy.
Bluff to appear unfazed. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

As the corpse in hauled back out, she cannot avoid her face to show profound disgust for the methods of her new captain. However, she still tries to see who of the crew is not at ease with the captain or Mister Plugg methods.

Aula takes a few seconds to look round from her perch up the rigging, trying to gauge which direction the ship has takes.

Kn geography 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 or survival 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

She then smiles at Kestryl and whispers to herbefore climbing down. "It seems we are fated to work together. We'll need to talk more when we have time."

Female Human Swashbuckler

I think you've missed my rolls. I should not be far from the lead.

Female Human Swashbuckler

Aula takes the time to her bearings and listen to her new captain's threats silently trying to remove the bad taste in her mount and clear her head.

So that's where we are. Let's play safe and be an eager pirate. At least until I find my equipment and can plan for an escape.

As she hears Mr Plugg's command, a thin smile lights her face and still without a word, she runs towards the rig and jumps to grab it before climbing as fast as she can.

Acrobatics check for a running jump 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

climb:
Climb checks 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Climb checks 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Climb checks 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Female Human Swashbuckler

The tone of the voice has an impressive effect on Aula. As soon as she hears it, she finds herself standing at attention before realizing she is no longer on a chelaxian ship.

She clamps her mouth shut just before yelling back 'Sir, yes Sir' and changes her posture as quick as possible almost blushing from shame.

Damn it, girl, you're not in the navy any more. Stop acting like that or you'll get yourself killed. Let's see where I am and what's going on.

Moving towards the door, she follows her captors checking herself for whatever equipment they may have left her.

The game thread has started: Link

Female Human Swashbuckler

What... Card game...the little cheater...what happened?

Aula groans as she fights the headache trying to split her head in halves.
The sound, smell and movement quickly call her back from those memories.

A ship, what am I doing on a ship?, she thinks as she peers around through her half opened eyes.

Female Human Swashbuckler

It looks like this one is stacking the deck. Let's see what she does if I put a little pressure on her.

"I'll take just one more card." says Aula as her gaze stops on Kestryl with insistence.

cards:

discarding the 4 of diamonds
1d4 ⇒ 1
1d13 ⇒ 4
and getting the 4 of clubs

Final deal: 4 and 9 of clubs, 7, 8 of diamonds and 10 of hearts

She looks at her cards with the air of someone not paying attention and goes on as if lost in her thoughts.
"By the way, you've got an original technique for dealing the cards. I never saw it done like that before. But then, when I used to play, dealers were very careful with their decks. Even honest mistakes could be called cheating and a cheater would be flogged or could even have his fingers cut off.", she says, laying her cards face down on the table and rolling her wrists as if to loosen them.

The dark hobgoblin grunts in disgust at the players of the game of chance, and mumbles under his breath, as he asks for some more spiced fruit juice.

"Waste of perfectly good fate". "Don't those boggers know that you're only dealt so much good luck in life". "Shame to waste it on cards, when you might need it to have an arrow go astray". "Still I guess it gets some of the bad luck out of the way as well". , he then begins some kind of choking, wheezing, high pitched fit, that is soon recognized as laughter.

Aula half smiles at the hobgoblin jest. "I'm not sure you could throw all your bad luck in a single card game. But then, I've already have enough bad luck for a full life, so that means some good luck is bound to come to me ?"

Shrugging again, she stands up from her stool, and grabbing it, moves to the table.

"Mind if I join you?", she asks, tossing a copper on the table,

cards:

Cards: 5d4 ⇒ (3, 3, 4, 2, 3) = 15
5d13 ⇒ (4, 8, 9, 10, 7) = 38

So thats 4, 8 and 7 of diamonds, 9 of clubs and 10 of hearts

As she looks at her cards, she smiles in a predatory way. "Ah, I see my luck my have turned tonight. I'll call" and throws another 4 coppers in the pot.

Then she closely looks at her opponents, trying to spot if someone was trying to cheat.

Perception check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26, +2 vs humans

Female Human Swashbuckler

To answer your questions, the first part can be easily done on a single boat. It will allow more PC interaction and cooperativity and will help develop a party dynamics.

As there is a lot of bookkeeping in this part, I suggest you sort the character by group and assign bookeeping tasks to some of us. I can do some easily.

Sunny actually manages a thoughtful look upon her features as she considers Aula's request. Though such a thing is but a short pause and she smiles again,

"Aye, well...'hiring' might not be th' right word. That involves money exchangin' hands, right?" She sips more of her Rum. "We kin...we think kind'a longer term than just in shine." Sunny shifts so as to be a little clearer of any flying furniture debris.

"As fer m'self? I be well versed at climbin'," She giggles, "Were all-a-ways scamperin' up th' palms at home." She admits a little quieter.

"So...on ship, I be a good rope monkey, how's about yer-self?" (^_^)

"Let's say I've learnt my way on a ship. If you're looking for a place on a ship. It's supposed to be the place to be. but up to now, I've not heard anyone hiring."

"My kin be here 'cause o' trade. Whut brings yerself t' these waters, then?" Suny chirps at Aula, though the large fellow is still visible from the corner of one large, blue eye.

Also, when the time comes, Perception check upon the 'burly lass'. 1d20+4

"Now thas' a whole lot'a Rosy!" She mutters.

"Aula" replies the chelaxian. "I've been here less than two hours and I'm still amazed at the coming and goings. And that no one is dead yet.", she adds, nodding to a table where a brawl as started between too drunk sailors.

At Aula's addressing of herself, Sunny picks up her mug and skips around the bar towards her.

"Here's a tale." She says, still grinning, "Ye've all ways heard about them Dolphins an' how they's such cheery things?" She sips from her mug,

"So....they all-a-ways say how they c'n be bringin' a sailor t'shore when they's in trouble, right." And again Sunny lets her comment sink in as she sups more of her drink.

"So tell me...what happens t'the sailors that they take the other way....?" Sunny leaves her tale and question hanging, then she frowns,

"Here..how d'ye tumble 'up' stairs? I all-a-ways thought a bod tumbled down 'em?" She asks, clearly puzzled.

Aula shakes her head in disbelief at the elf reply. "That's quite a tale. But it falls short. Every one knows that they would take the sailors to the other shore, you know. The one on the other side of the sea."

"And for your second question, just look round. Their job is not an easy one", she says looking at one of the whores climbing the stairs with one of her customers. "You may make some money trying that, but it's not worth it."

Female Human Swashbuckler

"If I were you, I'd just turn back and try my luck elsewhere. You won't get anything with that smile of yours here. Except if you're looking for a quick tumble upstairs.", grumbles the sour looking warrior sitting to the counter to the right of the cheery elf.

The warrior is a well build woman of Chelaxian blood despite her tanned skin and her face marked with scars. Sitting at the bar, she does not completely turn her back to the crowd and eyes every one with a wary eye. Her studed leather armor almost pitch black fits her very well and she looks armed for war. At her belt hung a wicked cutlass and a boarding axe while a wooden shield and a small pack lie at her feet.

Female Human Swashbuckler

Posting for the dot. I need to finish the equipment part of my character sheet. I'll put it in a separate spoiler.

Okay, here is Llaelian's ranger. All relevant info is in the profile. I'm still updating the description and personality but should be done within half an hour.

answers to Voice DM:

2. What sort of Oni tainted the bloodline?
3. What was the breeding program's intent? - and where were the mothers obtained? Also - how did they not get crushed by the Chelish authorities?

This part of the background was clearly not explicit enough. Here is a more detailed description of the reasons behind the breeding program.
As part of house Leroung, Kalyx is a powerful conjurer with access to the house resources and fame. As part of his research on the nature and powers of Outsiders, he has stumbled on the particular case of the Oni. As native Outsiders and shapechangers, they can take the form of different creatures like Ogres or Giants or even Tengus or Goblinoids. As part of his research interest, Kalyx wanted to find whether the nature of the Oni material body could influence his powers or core nature. For that, he decided to study the powers of the Oni offsprings, depending on their parentage. The first step was to acquire a pool of women in age of procreating. Most of them were young women sold by their parents to pay their debts. For the second part, he contacted Oni of different backgrounds and negotiated contracts with them, offering them the women in exchange of the offsprings. As Oni were not devils or demons, not summoned or bound, there was no issue with the Chelaxian authorities. Among the Oni contacted was a rare and mighty water Oni, Quay, inhabiting the body of a storm giant. This Oni was intrigued and amused by the proposition and chose a dark haired Isgeri woman called Eliana as his mate. Once Alua was born, Quay took his leave carrying Eliana with him.

Here is LLaelian's full submission:

Alua Heartpiercer, Hungerseed (Oni-Spawned) Ranger.

Stat breakdown:

Str 16 (+2), Dex 16, Con 13, Int 10, Wis 14 (+2), Cha 8 (-2)

Class and Tiefling Variant – including any Archetypes:

Hungerseed (Oni-Spawned) Ranger, aiming for sword and shield. I would like to go with the expanded spell-less ranger from Open design if possible. If not, I'll stay simple ranger.

Skills, Feats and traits summary:

Skills: Acrobatics, Climb, Intimidate, Perception, Stealth, Survival, Disguise.
Feats: Two weapon fighting
Traits: Superior Clutch (Tiefling hungerseed trait), Captain's Blade (Andoran trait).

Basic backstory / personality/ reasons to be a pirate and tiefling heritage:

Alua was born in the house Leroung in chelix, result of a breeding program of one of the house wizzard. Interested in the tiefling race, he summoned or brought different demons or devils to impregnate chosen slaves and observe the results. The most promising offsprings were kept while the others were sold or even discarded.
Born from an Oni father, Alua quickly displayed both the physical prowess of her father and some limited shapechanging ability. That was enough to keep her alive, but with her gray skin, horns, fin looking ears and extra large hands, she was too ugly to be kept in the breeding program. So as soon as she was old enough, she was sold as a galley slave where her natural strength could be used.
The should have been a death sentence as the life expectancy of the slaves on the galley she was was below two years. But she could endure the whippings and defend herself against the other inmates. And she would never ever give up. In there, she was blessed by the gods, for after less than six month, her galley fell into a trap laid out by three Andorans Gray Corsairs' frigates. The fight was short and bloody but Alua not only earned her freedom but also managed to settle her accounts with some of the inmates that had managed to molest her. No one was going to report four more deaths among the rowers.
Once free with nowhere to turn, Alua chose to first settle with her liberators, so that she could settle her lust for revenge. There she learnt the basics of fighting and moving on or above a deck and spent almost 6 months raiding the Chelaxian galleys. But the military discipline was not for her and once her thirst of blood was sated, she left the ship and made her way to somewhere she hoped she could both prove herself, gain enough to be whatever she wishes and if possible have another shot at some Chelaxians: the Shackles.

Hopping from ship to ship was easy enough, but once there, she quickly realized that her appearance and origin was once again held against her and she was time after time rejected as a potential recrue. Eventually, she ended up in Port Peril, in the Formidable Maid tavern, where she was served a spiked drink…

Alua is a tall grey skinned tiefling, with two small black horns on her forehead, fin-like ears and hands larger than they should for her size. Both supple and strong, she handles herself on a deck without flinching. She keeps her powers to herself as the ability to change shape can be a life saver in many occasions especially against enemies unaware of this talent.

Favorite Pirate / Privateer / Naval Character from real life or fiction:
As I already said, Henri Morgan is by far my favorite character as he managed in real life to realise what most fiction pirates would dream of.
