what you know about shadow demons:

Tales of demonic possession are common, used often by the ignorant to explain strange or violent behaviour. While the majority of such cases are merely manifestations of madness or derangement, those that are legitimate possessions are often the work of shadow demons.

Unlike many demons, shadow demons are incorporeal. When a particularly envious and evil mortal soul is pulled into the Abyss, it is transformed, split apart, and combined with other souls until what emerges is little more than jealous malevolence without the impediment of a physical body.

A shadow demon is utterly powerless in bright light or natural sunlight and flees from it. A shadow demon caught in such light cannot attack and can take only a single move or standard action. A shadow demon that is possessing a creature is not harmed by sunlight, but if it is struck by a sunbeam or sunburst spell while possessing a creature, the shadow demon is driven out of its host automatically.

Attacking the host of a shadow demon usually doesn't harm it but certain spells like searing light harm both the host and the demon (the demon takes extra damage but the host doesn't) casting protection from evil on a possessed creature can also drive the demon from the host if he fails a will save.

A shadow demon can attempt to possess a new host as a standard action, it is blocked by spells such as protection from evil or magic circle vs evil and he cannot attempt to possess the same host more than once per 24 hours.

During any conditions other than bright light, a shadow demon can disappear into the shadows as a move-equivalent action, effectively becoming invisible. Artificial illumination or light spells of 2nd level or lower do not negate this ability.

Shadow demons wield potent shadow conjuration magic able to recreated any other spell but not as powerful as the real thing.

Shadow demons resist weapons that are not cold iron and good aligned.

They also deal cold damage when attacking with their claws and bite.

The next morning Arasvashial approaches Varn.

"Do you sense it? The disturbance in the aether? I have been feeling it since last night. A powerful spell is being cast underground. Someone is trying to open a rift to the plane of shadow. I can try to disrupt their efforts from here but you must be careful a few creatures might have already begun to slip trough. I strongly recommend you prepare a casting of daylight or two you will need them."

I am a master of lore on demons and portals and I will do my best to counter spell directed at our forces.

"Go investigate or give the order to retreat! I will stand ready to counter any more fireballs from the tower but beware of the caster he may decide to try a different spell next"

"The swarms will likely not pursue us very as they will want to stay close to their queen but this passage will be blocked until we come back and kill the queen."

Since he is no longer blind I will consider making him a new avatar later

Aravashial arrives and examines the demon but doesn't recognizes it and he proceeds to use dispel magic he manages to dissipate the cloudkill.

"I will help deal with the undead, take care of him" he says indicating the demon.

rolls:

knowledge the planes check: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
spellcraft check: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
dispel check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Aravashial considers the note and says "Areelu Vorlesh is the name of the demon responsible for opening the worlwound...Nahyndrian crystal are said to be the crystallized fragments of a murdered demon lord’s life force, though what use such an object could be put to is unknown. We have only heard rumors of their existence so far. I fear that they're tied to something far worse than what’s already happened to Kenabres."

"That is very interesting...We will speak about this at length later but for now let's see if we can find a healer. I need to be at full strength so I can make my way to the library."

Unfortunately for Aravashial there is no healer at the heart capable of the magic required to restore his eyes. The clerics capable of such a feat were all at the cathedral this morning and it doesn't look like any survived.

"Damn it all! Without my eyes more than half my spells are useless! I need to rethink what I have prepared...Listen Varn that library contains all the knowledge on portal manipulation that Riftwardens have accumulated over generations. Knowledge that could be the key to closing the worldwound or in the wrong hands could be used to open another...We must go to the library and see if anything or anyone survived. I will prepare and I wish to leave in the morning to go. I would appreciate if you and our new friends would come along."

Arasvashial supports himself on Varn.

"Indeed we have much to discuss...It seems I may now be the last of my order. As such it has become necessary for me to try and pass on my knowledge...I belong to a special order of mages called Riftwardens, we specialize in magic that can control and manipulate portals and our duty is to close portals that are dangerous to the material plane. We were stationed here in Kenabres as we were undertaking a mission to close the worldwound once and for all...Would you consider becoming my apprentice?"

"...Excuse me, I need to find a healer that can restore my eyes." he says slowly rising.

"My magic will aid you by making you react faster!" says the wizard casting a spell and you feel your limbs speeding up and sudenly things seems to be moving slower to you.

Casting haste on Anivia, Varn, Raven and Orlando.

"I do believe that your staff fleeing the manor is the only reason it is so untouched. The demons are more interested in slaughtering people than destroying buildings. Still that doesn't mean they wont come back looking for survivors like the ones we saw before. When you move on I would rather go with you, I must know what happened to the other in my order and at the heart there might be a cleric that can restore my sight."

"I agree with Tessai that we should investigate the safehouses, The tower of Estrod in particular that isn't very far from here but I also have a personal request. Several high ranking members of my order were having a meeting at a place called The Librarium of the Broken Black Wing. They are all powerful mages who specialize in the slaying of demons. I would like to go there to investigate if any of them survived but it is quite a ways to the south of here."

"I'm afraid none of those names are familiar to me. However you are right we must get to the surface in order to determine the best course of action" replies Aravashial.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Before we go there a few more things I need to mention. Drezen is the name of a fortress crusaders of the first crusade on the edge of the world-wound. It was meant to serve as a staging area to wipe the worldound clean but it fell a century ago as the crusaders were pushed back the demon horde. Also if the note is true and the Tower of Estrod is under cultist control then something must be done. It cannot be allowed to fall into the hands of the cultists. It is a library that contains all the knowledge and research on fighting demons the crusaders have accumulated since the first crusade including information on the making and maintenance of the wardstones, the other locations are the home of Kando Nyserian and the other is unknown to me it sounds like a jewelry store but if we have a chance we should investigate these locations once we reach the surface."

"Because Kando Nyserian is a business partner of Horgus and he didn't want to say anything that would implicate him with the cultist, isn't that right Horgus?"

"I have long suspected that the Templars of the ivory Labyrinth, had infiltrate Kenabres but this is proof! We need to take the bodies with us so they can be identified by the church! If we can learn their identities we may be able to uncover some of their allies who are still hidden among the loyal faithful." says Aravashial who actually sounds delighted.

"This creature sounds dangerous. I have a spell of heroism and one of haste ready. Let me know if you need them" says Aravashial

"How so?" says Arashial

Anevia describes them to him quietly.

"Oh! So descendants of the tainted first crusaders do survive to this day! How fascinating, I have many questions for them!"

So far Arvashial has been silent listening to the conversation when he finally speaks

"That's most interesting, it was my theories that several nobles in Kenabres were funding a secret cult of Baphomet and some investigation pointing you out as the most likely suspect Horgus. Personally I still believed you were guilty even after you were found innocent. I know for a fact that the cult does exist and someone is or was funding them if not you then another noble most likely."
