No-Prep Character: Lisavet

Wednesday, January 27, 2021

This week we send out the final chapter of The Shroud of Four Silences. For those still experiencing technical difficulties receiving emails, we’ll leave signups open to get these (at a rate of a chapter a day to help you catch up). Additionally, we’ll have an ePub version of this story available here on paizo.com and the Kindle store as soon as possible, and we’ll be doing this again once we work out some of the kinks in the email garden hose, so to speak. For now, enjoy this glimpse into to one of the story’s four protagonists, the Sarenite acolyte Lisavet.

LISAVET, WELL-READ ACOLYTE

Lisavet found two callings in the Dawnflower Library. She was not only drawn to the faith of Sarenrae, benevolent goddess of the sun and healing, but also adored the numerous and varied books within the library. Although trained as a healer, she spent most of her time reading adventure stories. When the opportunity came for adventure of her own, Lisavet put her self-doubt aside and embraced her faith, becoming a righteous hero. Lisavet’s adventures are described in The Shroud of Four Silences.

Lisavet is just the sort of person anyone would want to find at a local shrine or hospital: caring, intelligent, and eager to provide whatever assistance she can. Although she puts on a greater show of confidence than she sometimes feels, she knows that Sarenrae will never let her down.

Plot Hooks

Game Masters might consider the following plot hooks as a means of integrating Lisavet into any Pathfinder Second Edition game.

  • Lisavet needs some special herbs to make a rare healing poultice she’s read about. She knows she’s ill-suited to handle an expedition to find the herbs on her own and wants the heroes to accompany her.
  • Having suffered a strange wound that resists ordinary attempts to heal it, the heroes must come to a specialist like Lisavet.
  • While perusing an ancient folio, Lisavet discovered a map to a forgotten shrine of Sarenrae in a forlorn section of wilderness. She needs aid to reach it and restore it to its former glory.

On sidenote of something I've realized:

I always imagine book characters to look more mundane and less idealized unless book focuses on describing characters as standing out in such way.

Like Eleukas definitely has much better looking hair than I would have imagined. I certainly imagined Lisavet would be wearing more priestly or bookish attire.

Reminds me of how I somehow got image of Haplo from Death Gate Cycle looking kinda like Vulture from 90s spiderman: Bald and prominent nose. I have no idea why that was image I got in my head since in all art of the character he does apparently have hair so presumably his hair was mentioned somewhere in seven books xD

Those are really cool and useful, but I'd love to see more spread over levels. Like Lisavet at level 2, 6 and 12 for example.

Maybe when she gets more experience and reached those levels we can revisit this. Right now she's really just had the one adventure!

These pre-made NPCs and quick no-prep encounters just thrown up here for free on the blog are so cool. I'm liking them a lot.

I started trying to read those when they came out. I'd read the Dragonlance trilogies. Darksword. Rose of the Prophet. And loved every page. Then I started Death Gate and I just don't know what happened. I don't even remember anything about it except there were floating islands or something? Did I miss out?

Ye ask person with crappy memory xD

Anyway I think,:
they went through all four elemental separated planets with final book being in the labyrinth place the Haplo was afraid of going back to, Haplo goes through char dev from bad guy to not bad guy, main bad guy is Haplo's master as is obvious and I think all worlds fuse back into one in finale but uh can't remmember much more. Oh and that one silly character is actually powerful mage cliche happens and Haplo also gets love interest.(which I found surprising back when I imagined him to be old bald man with nose and tattoos :p Not that old men can't have younger love interests in real life, but I digress)

Maybe I'll have to try reading them again.
Seems there might be a break after The Dresden Files #16 & 17 came out within a few months of each other.

Whenever I see a character stat block like this I try to build the character in Herolab Online. With Lisavet, I figure there's some authorial fiat going on, or something's missing from the stat block, or I'm just missing something in her description. This is what I came up with:

Lisavet
Human cleric 2
NG, Medium, Human, Humanoid
Perception +8
Languages Common, Dwarven, Elven, Halfling, Kelish
Skills Arcana +7, Diplomacy +5, Medicine +8, Nature +8 (+10 to your check to Treat Wounds, subject to the GM’s determination.), Occultism +7, Religion +8, Scribing Lore +7, Society +7, Survival +8
Str 10 (+0), Dex 12 (+1), Con 10 (+0), Int 16 (+3), Wis 18 (+4), Cha 12 (+1)
Other Items studded leather, staff, minor healing potions (3), wooden religious symbol, purse (11 gp; 9 sp)
--------------------
AC 13; Fort +4; Ref +5; Will +10
HP 24 Focus Points 1 Hero Points 1
--------------------
Speed 25 feet
Melee [1] staff +4 (two-hand (1d8)), Damage 1d4 B
Divine Cleric Spells DC 18, attack +8; 1st bless, burning hands, sanctuary Cantrips (1st) detect magic, divine lance, light, shield, stabilize
Focus Spells 1 Focus Point, DC 18; 1st Dazzling Flash
Feats Domain Initiate, General Training, Natural Medicine, Student Of The Canon, Turn Undead
Other Abilities absalom, anathema, cloistered cleric, deity, divine font, divine spellcasting, doctrine, first doctrine, sun

As you can see, she's missing a general feat and a skill feat, has too many skills, too many languages, and her AC, perception, and saves don't match up. Note: "too many" compared to the published stat block. And she's missing those two feats because I can't see what they should be. Also, I'm treating "Scribing Lore" as what the blog calls "Library Lore", which is probably wrong, but I couldn't find anything that would give "Library Lore" specifically. I thought "Librarian" was a valid Background, but I couldn't find it, and besides, she's already got Acolyte.

NPCs no longer follow PC build rules. It's not "authorial fiat". It's that the rules for NPCs are different in PF2.

Fair enough. What rules do they follow?

Making your own creatures fleshes out your game world and lets you introduce concepts not yet available in published products like the Bestiary volumes. These guidelines help you customize creatures to your specifications and explore your imagination. From strange beasts to canny political rivals, you have the power to design creatures that fit the narrative needs of your story.

Building Creatures Chapter (pgs 56-73)
Creatures aren't built the same way PCs are. The rules for building them are more flexible, and their statistics are based on benchmark final numbers rather than combining each individual modifier together. This is called top-down design, in which you consider the design process as a whole and select the details that reflect your intended result, rather than building statistics from the bottom up and hoping the finished creature matches your vision.

This guide provides a stop by step process to build creatures, but as you get more comfortable with creature creation, you may prefer to use different methods. You could start with one ability you think is cool, or you might look to create a spellcaster of a certain type. There's no wrong starting place or wrong way to compile and present your creation. (snip)
Designing NPCs
Sometimes you’ll design a creature that’s meant to have abilities or characteristics similar to those of a PC. Maybe you need a bold champion, a sly rogue master criminal, or a wizened druid elder for your game. You also might need a common baker, who has little combat ability but great skill with dough and an oven. This section provides ways you might modify aspects of the creature-building process to fit those needs.

You guys are derailing the discussion, tho. This thread is about whether or not I should try re-reading the Deathgate Cycle.

Does anyone know if we will be getting the other characters for this since it seems to have paused halfway through for tales of lost omens stuff.

We have the other two ready to go. I plan to release them around the time we compile the novella into an eBook and offer it for sale.

This ia absolutely correct. NPCs have their own rules to build them, and they follow the monster building guidelines. We absolutely "flavor" them like character classes, with Focus Points and such, but they're not intended to be player characters and therefore won't ever line up like that.

In fact, it's pretty rare to call them the same name as a character class (fighter, cleric, etc.), because they aren't built like the classes--here, however, it made some sense because that's the role they have in the story. I might have called Lisavet a "priest" or "scholar" rather than a "cleric" in another context.

Look to our pregens if you want to see characters built like those a player would make.

Just a reminder the epub book went up for sale three weeks ago.

It's pretty crushing that the other 3 characters (Eleukas, Gristlebrust and Wendlyn) all had character art with transparent PNGs and this one is a non-transparent JPG. The lack of consistency is a bummer.

Hm. Where might I find this character art, and hopefully stat blocks for the characters?

Thanks. A question: Will we ever know more about Lisavet and Wendylyn's family? We know that Lisavet is the younger half-sister of Wendylyn, and that Lisavet is human and Wendylyn is half-elven. This implies that their common parent is Wendylyn's human parent, but which parents (maybe all three?) did the raising? Also, how old are these women? Wendylyn could be considerably older than Lisavet, or they could be close in age.

So many questions.

This is a very specific nitpicky request, I apologize, but is there a png transparent background image available of Lisavet? The other 3 Otari characters have transparent backgrounds in their posts except for Lisavet. I'm hoping to use all 3 of them in my AV game in Foundry and I just wanted to keep my character image previews consistent with the transparency, especially with official Pathfinder characters.

BTW I adore all 4 of them in their short story adventure!

Thank you!
