On Legacies

Crystal Frasier has left the building, but her legacy lives on! Legacies are a big focus of the War for the Crown Adventure Path, which comes to its stunning conclusion with Amber E. Scott's The Six-Legend Soul. Amber's adventure opens on a truly dire note:

While the PCs were working hard to obtain the approval of First Emperor Taldaris's spirit in Axis (as recounted in John Compton's excellent adventure, The Reaper's Right Hand), assassins murdered Princess Eutropia!

This is not a good position for the PCs to find their patron.

This mighty deed is merely the first step in a thrilling adventure that will put high-level heroes to the test. Amber assembled a ton of exceptional encounters—so many that I'm not sure how she fit them all into a single adventure—and Crystal tied them very neatly to the rest of the adventure path. Several of the PCs' former enemies and allies influence this story, but it is the legendary figures from Taldor's history that really steal the show. You may have noticed the, well, shall we say, suspiciously favorable histories of Taldan emperors in the inside cover of each of the adventure path's volumes. The PCs meet each of them here, vying with these legendary spirits for control of young Prince Carrius's soul.

It's quite common for us to end an adventure path with a "Continuing the Campaign" article, and War for the Crown is no different. In addition to providing adventure hooks regarding several loose ends, Crystal's article presents an in-depth subsystem to determine what kind of ruler Eutropia becomes at the end of the campaign. So much of Eutropia's legacy is tied up in the PCs' decisions and victories throughout the entire adventure path that her ultimate leadership style rests on their actions. Will history call her Eutropia the Kind, Eutropia the Builder, Eutropia the Measured…or even Eutropia the Bloody?

If I didn't say it before, Crystal's my favorite adventure writer. I've loved reading War of the Crown and can't wait to get to run it. The Harrowing will forever be my favorite module, but War of the Crown has been one of the best APs. Definitely up there with Runelords and S&S.

Damn it, I didn't even have time to realize what exactly I'm reading when I stumbled upon a huge spoiler. That's not the way to write a public blog, seriously. I would've stopped reading if there was a spoiler alert at the very least.

I... may like the AP and the sentiment, but this blog was an incredibly poor decision to post. I'm stunned that anyone thought it was a good idea to put up.

It might be because I didn't pay attention during the other AP releases, but is spoiling major plot points in the final book of an AP standard procedure...?

Yes.

On another note, I love the playing card art of Eutropia that was spoiled. I think what we need is this piece of art done in a harrowing card style to honour Crystal.

In the blog's defense, this was also spoilered in the sales blurb for the sixth book as well, so its kinda an open secret.

Things are always spoiled there, so I prefer not to read those blurbs for scenarios/APs that I'm gonna play. And yes, that's a problem. Only scenario pictures are worse.

For some reason I envision my players just impersonating her and claiming the throne for themselves.

Off her and put a Simulacrum under your control onto the Throne.

Why is the picture spoiling things not in the SPOILER box? That said, hopefully this will work better than how book 2 of Carrion Crown did it.

This is kinda sad. Spoiler alerts should have been posted. Some of the decisions that Paizo has made lately....

Concerns about the spoiler content have been noted and addressed! (Addressed twice, actually--once to hide the spoiler content, and just today to hide the spoiler image and remove a related tidbit.)

We had some miscommunication about this blog in the rush to get to GenCon, but the error was mine, the issue has been rectified, and I'll be more careful regarding spoilers going forward. Thanks!

Kind of late for a fix, but better late than never . . . .

Well, now that I've had a chance to think more about this, even though the lack of Spoilerage is still regrettable, I intend to make a story out of it (in the unlikely event that I ever get to GM War for the Crown, that is):

I plan to introduce a Jokeresque villain (unless one is already available) who starts trolling the whole nation of Taldor about how the dreaded scene from the blog spoiler is going to come about. And then the dreaded event actually happens, right on schedule . . . .
