Introducing New Product Launch Quests!

Monday, April 20, 2015

The Pathfinder Society team is always looking for ways to improve our relationship with friendly local gaming stores and offer things to help thank them for all they do in their support of both the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild and Adventure Card Guild.

Retailers registered on paizo.com currently may receive a free Base Set for each Pathfinder Adventure Card Game adventure path in order to run Adventure Card Guild scenarios. Each week they also receive free copies of the Adventure Card Guild scenarios. And in the very near future, we plan on giving retailers access to the back catalog and all future scenario releases of the Roleplaying Guild scenarios.

We're kicking off this plan with an exclusive quest for retailers on April 29! This quest is based on and utilizes content from our latest hardcover release Pathfinder Unchained. In the future, our plan is to provide more exclusive quests coupled with new hardcover rulebooks upon their public release.

In this initial launch, the Unchained quest will only be provided to registered retailers. The registered retailers may schedule it as many times and on whatever days as they like, and it will be store exclusive through the end of PaizoCon. After PaizoCon, it will be made available as a free download for everyone! It is the registered retailers' responsibility to provide printed copies of the Quest to GMs to run the event.

Although the onus is on the retailer to make the most of this exclusive quest, I encourage all of you to speak with store owners and help them make the most of this opportunity. If your local store is not a registered retailer on Paizo.com, point them to our Retailers page to sign up!

We hope that the start of this new program, with the help of our VOs, will generate more interest in retailer exclusive content. This program will allow players and GMs the opportunity to familiarize themselves with new hardcover rules content, while allowing retailers to highlight a new product and hopefully boost sales in their stores.

To round out our latest hardcover release, next week's blog will feature how Pathfinder Unchained is being integrated into Pathfinder Society. This blog will highlight all the information you need to not only have a successful product launch in store, but how it will be be utilized for the foreseeable future in organized play.

Please let us know what you think, and as always, thanks to all of you for making PFS as awesome as it is today!

Aha, gotcha. My first reading of what you had said made it sound like I had promised to send out some custom map (probably a printed one) to everyone running this adventure. Phew!

No, sorry, didn't mean anything like that.

What I should have said, I think:
After seeing the list of props for the quest, I saw that I had one of them, and had already verified with the store that they wanted me to run it, but they didn't have that flip-map available, so I asked them to order it for me (special order is their terminology), but they have not been able to find a supplier with it in stock.

So, among other things I do tomorrow, today after work, I get to see if I can print up the parts of that map I need to use to run the Quest on Saturday.

I'm in a similar boat. I can't get my local stores to print it out and get it to me so I can run it for them. However, Pathfinder Unchained is still selling out, so it's impossible to say it whether it would've improved sales.

Okay, printed the portion of the map that is used in the quest. Cut off the extra white paper. Taped the pieces together to make the map, after using colored markers for the three pools. Usable, the colors for the pools showed better than I had hoped.

Only got to run it once, and had to grab a random person to make a three player table. Still used all 4 pregens.

It was interesting, but, due to low player dice rolls, the party had issues with both encounters. Because of that, and the lack of anyone who can do their own healing, they had issues with damage. Monk did some yo-yo-ing, and was only up, during the final part, due to Bear's Endurance from the Summoner.

Took all three charges from the wand to get it to work. Once they finally managed to hit it, they did a fair amount of damage. It was just bad rolls to hit that caused the issues.

They had fun, they gazed in wonder at the chronicle, and then got to plotting which PC they wanted to assign it to.

I am assuming, since it is a 4-6, that it is a one chronicle each for playing & GMing it.

While the potions were helpful, it was a close-run thing, so more healing options might have been helpful. Maybe one of the meditation rooms offering a small amount of healing for a worshiper praying there.

Liberty's Edge

Well... it is now Tuesday, After Paizocon! I poked around a bit, but didn't see the new launch quest available yet. I assume folks are still recovering from their con weekend, but I'm wondering when I might find it available...

Lantern Lodge 5/5

We ran through this one- -about 2 hours, with a group of players ranging from 3star GMs to a player who'd never played PFRPG (but lots of tabletop experience).

It was a little longer than Silverhex quests, but still plenty fun.

It would have been nice to have the pregens at level 4 to highlight differences...

Well, this, here too.

Do you mean that they burned charges from the wand trying to cast the spell in the wand? Or that they had to use multiple castings from the wand to make something else work?

Spoiler:
The Sunmoner has a wand of Dispel Magic, with three charges.

He used it in the last battle, trying to dispel the Fly spell that the daemon was under. Due to low rolls, the Dispel only worked on the last, third, charge to dispel that Fly spell.

Didn't help that the wand is, of course, CL5, while the daemon's fly was cast at CL 8, IIRC. Makes the DC 19, with only a roll of d20+5 to get there.

Has anyone out there played or GMed these at a participating store? If so, do you have any feedback or comments? We really would like to make this program special and improve upon it, but can only do so with the community's help. Thanks in advance.

I did Fane of Fangs at Gatekeeper Games. The quest was short and sweet and ran well for me, no complaints there. Though I feel it would be better in future if players got XP, PP and gold for playing these store exclusives. I feel like people at my table were a bit disappointed when they learned that they got none.

If I could suggest something to make the program better I'd include something special. To draw the players into playing at the store and buying a book I feel like the chronicle sheet should have something like a special boon that makes the player think "The book is worth buying just for this!" The items, like the Legacy arrow and spear of the huntmaster were nice but didn't really have a wow factor.

Our FLGS only just got the quest (after some issues that Chris L helped clear up on the CS side of things) today, so I'll be running these soon! Huzzah!

One quick question, though - the Chronicle Sheet being 4-6 - does that indicate that this must be applied to a character of levels 4-6 only?

Thanks very much!

Pretty much. As any chronicle, it can be attached to a lower level PC, but not higher, but the boons won't be available until the PC reaches the minimum chronicle level, in this case, 4th level.

And, since there is no XP, PP, or GP, it is only a boon chronicle...

Fair enough, and thanks!

Ah well - here I was hoping to get one of those items for my Venture Captain character *grins*

I imagine the answer is supposed to be "no," but there's nothing stopping someone from applying it at level one (as per standard pregen rules), is there?

Please let us know how to download this quest. I'm hoping to run it, and I'm not connected to any particular retailer.

With the way applying chronicles to level one characters works now, a character still wouldn't be able to utilize it until they hit the level range of the chronicle.

Chris, at the moment the quests are only being distributed to retailers, they should become availabe to everyone else pretty soon. They said after Paizocon, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it up in a week or two.

Do we have an ETA for the general release of fame of fangs? I'm not really associated with a flgs at the moment but I'd love to run this for my local pathfinder group

During its product release phase, it is only available through a store that is registered with Paizo.

I believe that after a month or so it may become widely available.

I'm guessing it will be after gencon. (depends on whether they automated it or not.)

Any way to confirm if my store is getting the correct information?

They have been unable to get the Ancient Dungeon map, as they get the message it is out of print.

Print Edition: Ships from our warehouse in 4 to 11 business days. This product is out of print.

Other than getting the PDF and using a printout, is there any workaround, or similar map?

Looks like Paizo still has a few in stock, just not enough to supply distributors, so you could try ordering one directly from them here. Only other options would be to check around online or at other local stores and see if anyone has one in stock.

Observations/feedback:

We've gotten the chance to run this locally a few times. So far, every player I've spoken to has loved it. Clocking in between 60-80 minutes for each run, it's just enough to draw players into the FLGS to play (unlike, say, a 20-30 minute quest like Ambush in Absalom or a single part of Silverhex). The story is tight, the battles balanced, and by knowing exactly which 4 pregens will be present, skill checks (and DCs) were set for each player/PC to be involved in figuring out what was going on and what they had to do about it.

99% thumb's up / awesome vote from me and my locals!

The only tiny 1% thing I have to critique is a general issue for Ambush in Absalom, Urge to Evolve, *and* Fane of Fangs - there's no commentary in the quest as to replayability (even though it's assumed that it's endlessly replayable, I had players asking me about it and if I could cite an official ruling on the boards) and the consequences of PC/pregen death (I know from conversations not on the public boards that dying in a 0xp 0pp quest means you just get the boons crossed off but no other negative consequences, but since that's not stated anywhere publicly yet...).

See? This is so good that I had to nit-pick to say anything not good about it! Well done on this!

The closest I've seen to official is the sidebar from Kobold Quarterly 17 with Ambush in Absalom and 23 with Urge to Evolve.

Pathfinder Society Quests are brief adventures consisting of two to three encounters designed for use in the Pathfinder Society Organized Play campaign by Paizo Publishing. A legal Pathfinder Society PC may receive a Chronicle for completing a Quest as many times as he completes it, and a game master may likewise apply a Chronicle to any of his characters when running a Quest. Each Quest Chronicle grants a single-use boon or ability, each of which may be played once per scenario.

As for PC death, I remember the same thing, but from the public boards after Ambush in Absalom became available through Paizo.

The Exchange 5/5 RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

It's now available: here.

Question: for this quest to be PFS-legal, what characters are allowed? Certainly the four included pre-gens. What about players' real PFS characters? If so, of what level?

The Exchange 5/5 RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

Upon further investigation, this quest does not appear in the Additional Resources document, so it's not legal to run in PFS at all.

It is designed for PFS play and has a chronicle sheet. So yes, you can play it in PFS. The fact that it is not in the AR just means that you cannot add items or powers from it to your character unless they appear on a chronicle sheet. (Note that wardens of the reborn forge is sanctioned for PFS play, even has a explicit mode for use as a seeker arc, and is also not in the AR.)
