The Tales of Two Chronicles

Monday, December 5, 2011

With a continuing effort to strengthen the entire Pathfinder Society program, as well as to continue tying up loose ends, Winter Witch and Death’s Heretic have now been incorporated into the Pathfinder Society.

Because of the differences between reading a novel and playing a game, there are specific rules needed for using sanctioned content from a Pathfinder Tales novel during play and we'll be providing a Chronicle sheet for players to use with their characters. You can download the Chronicle sheets on their respective product pages.

Sanctioned novels you ask? How do you sanction a novel? Because Pathfinder Tales novels are stories first, there is no easy way to sanction items, spells, feats, or other special abilities whole cloth. Therefore, the Chronicle sheets use the following rules.

  1. Only items, feats, boons, or abilities found on the Chronicle sheet are legal for play.
  2. Each player must have a copy of the Chronicle sheet with his or her character at all times.
  3. In order for the Chronicle sheet to be considered legal for play, the player must show to the GM a copy of the Pathfinder Tales novel, either in printed or digital format.
  4. A Chronicle sheet may be applied to each character the player currently has or creates in the future.

GMs are advised to work with players to make the sanctioning of Pathfinder Tales Chronicle sheets easy and fast. As long as the player has a copy of the book, she should be able to use the Chronicle sheet just like any other.

If you would like to learn more about the Pathfinder Tales line, please visit paizo.com or your local bookstore. Other novels in the line include Master of Devils by former Dragon Magazine editor Dave Gross, and Plague of Shadows by Howard Andrew Jones.

I love you guys and what you do but.........I think this sets a bad precedence. i.e buy and carry around our unrelated products and get PFS goodness.

Are Adventure Path subscribers going to get boons just for them? Do I get any boons for hours of Paizo paper mini construction or what hard backs I have?; no, so why get them for novels I read.

Just saying, people love you and your quality products. Those interested in PFS and novels are getting both and being rewarded by the experience (no pun intended) and don't need (or shouldn't feel they need)more then that. PHS enthusiasts will most likely read the novels anyway and wont need to be enticed.

or its Monday and I am grumpy.

Yarb -

APs and hardcovers - if you want to buy an item from an AP, you have to bring that book (or a printout saying you are the legal owner thereof) to every PFS game, same with all hardcovers not in the core assumption. Same as these Boons.

Paper minis - not released by Paizo, they are a licensed product, and thus are not supported by paizo in PFS specificly.

why should the novels be the only books you *don't* need to cart around if you want to use loot from them?

Are they unrelated? I feel like Pathfinder Tales are one of the only ways a player can experience and enjoy Golarion without a GM. While I wouldn't necessarily want my players reading Rule of Fear if we're playing Carrion Crown or even all of the country write-ups in the Inner Sea World Guide for fear of them stumbling across info I'd like to keep to myself, I wouldn't have any problem with them taking home a Pathfinder Tales novel. These books allow players to engage in and learn about the setting they're playing in without a GM holding their hand or warning them away from this or that. And if the player then comes to the table with a better understanding of the world - what the situation is in the Worldwound after reading The Worldwound Gambit or what life is like in Tian Xia after digging into Master of Devils - that seems like a bonus to me. And if we can reward PFS players for kindly spending their free time reading, experiencing Golarion, and adding to their knowledge of in-world nuances, it's something we're happy to do.

As for other lines getting boons, if someone can make a strong argument for how reading those or putting those together makes a PFS player more familiar with and invested in the greater campaign in a way that doesn't spoil adventures or potential PFS plots, we might consider it. But currently we just don't see how those lines directly benefit PFS players.

What this isn't is a bribe. Pathfinder Tales are do wonderfully for us. What it is is a way to reward players for participating in an adventure in Golarion, which is, after all, what the Pathfinder Society is all about.

My point is the novels shouldn't give you boons at all not that you shouldn't cart them around. Just seems product pushy.

I did not mean to suggest that one should get boons for other products either.

Giving chronicles is just part of Paizo marketing to encourage people to buy their line of fiction. PFS is after all a marketing avenue as well. We encourage the same activity by sanctioning Pathfinder Module play as well as offering a chronicle/boon with the Beginner Box.

The special Tales chronicles are very minor in their effect on the game, so there is little impact on play.

Just an FYI, unless the expectation changed, you do not have to bring the book with you every time you play. Just bring it with you to the original session, along with the chronicle. Show it to the GM and have him/her sign off on it. After that, all you need is the chronicle sheet.

Typo on bullet 3 of HOW TO USE - They both say ".... a copy of Plague of Shadows, either ....."

I stick them on my smart phone. I read them there too, that might be an option for you?

Similar, I keep them on my mini, or on a flash drive I can plug into the mini.

Hopefully they will be added to additional resources soon.

They will be added when we do our monthly updates to Additional Resources as is done every month.

Mr. Brock, I think that it's interesting how avatars influence writing, and so I'm going to use this as another argument for tons more of them (but with lots of filters in the selection, since it's hard right now). I've seen before where a PbP player's character's voice changes from his recruitment post to his in-character posts, reflecting the avatar that he chose. And now I'm seeing something similar, where I was all "Whaa? That sounds kind of sarcastic," then "but that doesn't sound like the guy I read about," and then I re-read it in the matter-of-fact tone of your avatar. It was a little mind-trippy, and I think a good reason for more different kinds of avatars, so that we can have more different kinds of tones from the roleplaying personalities on this board (which is presumably a lot given the context).

Not to Complain about waiting..

But the monthly updates to Additional Resources is used to wait for books to come out to the full audience.. That is not the case here.

I think it is better to put them there as soon as possible since I think that is where most people will see them and get the chance to use them.

I think it is more accurate to say that avatars influence reading. I often catch myself misreading the intent of somebody with an angry avatar, and I'm sure that people have assumed that I intend to be condescending much of the time when there is no such intent.

I'm not going in to make corrections, have editing take a look, and then tie up digital assets dept. to get it into PDF format and getting up on the website for download, and then turnaround and do it all again in 2 weeks.

(Snark)But why not?(/Snark)

More seriously I don't see an issue with 'once a month' updates. it's not like any of the boons are essential to a character's survival. :-)

There was a chronicle for the Beginner Box? I bought one, but didn't hear about this.

This is my understanding as well, unless as Bob said "unless the expectation changed".

There is a special Chronicle/boon available for anyone who attends a Beginner Box Bash event that highlights the product release. It is a time sensitive boon like the others and will no longer be available after December 15th.

These events are targeted at new players, but anyone can attend. Any registered game store is eligible to receive the materials to host such an event, or you can reach out to your regional Venture-Captain to see if anymore are planned. There are four special, one-hour, quests associated with these events and completing all four grant the boon. There is also a version for the GM's.

Aside, I wish the scenarios with the boons would be available for download. Not so much for me GMing them (though yes, I'd like one) but because what I've heard about the player boons would be very nice to share with the kids. When I'm trying to corrupt, er, teach children 9-15, they will make mistakes and if they come to regular events they likely will die from those mistakes (espeically if they take their Uncle Matt's character creation tactics to heart). A get out of Hell free card would be nice to be able to give them.

(And I just double checked, no events in central Ohio, and I'm not dragging 5 kids in an Insight to Cincinnati).

Hypothetically I could run something on the 10th or 11th, but Tim won't be back from training until the 19th, and I want to (re) teach him too.

The quests will soon be available for free(?) download, but after the time interval for the special boon lapses.

And to be fair, all the information regarding the BBB and the existence of the special chronicle have been on the Paizo website (product pages, blog posts, forums, etc) since before the product was even released.

If you want to take advantage of this, I recommend reaching out to the Ohio Venture-Captain (Russell Akred) to see what could be arranged.

Oh, I know (Though I have to confess to misreading the initial announcement, I thougth it was one weekend and done, not sure I could have handled it then, but I tried). And I will be DLing the scenarios and giving them to the kids (as well as Beginner's Box Hero Lab when it comes out).

I'm just registering a lament that the boons are not going to be something I can share with the kids.*

Spoiler:
That I could possibly get a tiefling out of it by running the events would be nice, but inconsequental to why I wanted them. Plus the idea of Em teaching her Girl Scout troop is too amusing to not consier.
