I love how this product is intended not only to be a tie-in to other products, but that it really stands alone as a complete package by itself. The quality of the counters (very thick cardboard!) and of the flip-mat, all look like they're designed for long-term use, even when "graduating" to the full Pathfinder rules.
From the get-go, you win over new gamers to your company by showing you focus on making a good, long-lasting product. Add my voice to the many thanks that have already been expressed.

You don't need anything more for a Beginner Box, really. Glad I ordered this at my FLGS (cuts out the blasted shipping cost).

Mmm... one copy for me, i mean..my lovely girlfriend, one copy for alex and amy, and one copy for shelby. Mah hahahaha...oh poo, thats Like my entire "winter present festival" budget gone...
I know I have suggested this before, but next year, it might be a really good idea to dedicate the module line to really simple, low level adventures/campaigns, which would compliment this box set, and help get new players up to fifth level.

Definitely getting this as soon as it hits British shores.
One thing - I may be running a demo day for Pathfinder (RPGs in general have only just recently got popular in my local store) would any of the online content adventures be able to serve as a replacement introductory game, so the in-store game doesn't spoil the surprise of playing through the box's default? Or am I just going to have to build one myself from the box's rules?

The thing I appreciate the most about the Beginner's Box (and by extension, Paizo and all the fine folks who worked on this), is that it brings me full circle. I started gaming with Basic D&D with one of the older boxes (i.e., the one with the color picture of a fighter and wizard looking in on a dragon lying atop a big pile of treasure). That year was a magical time for me and my brother. And it served as the entire crux for how and why we got into RPGs. Eventually, we "graduated" to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons...and, after passing through all its iterations...I now have the occasional opportunity to write for a hobby I've grown to really love, which has fired my imagination for more years than I can recount.
With the Beginner's Box, it's like everything is starting over again. Only now, I get to relive this experience through the eyes of my children. They're still a little young to introduce to Pathfinder right away (i.e., my oldest is 7 years old). But when we're all ready, I know our game nights will immediately include the Beginner's Box and it'll serve as their first RPG experience. After that, I'm certain it'll fire their imagination just as much as it did for me.
So, this is a heartfelt thank you to Paizo. This is another example of how you guys have become the true custodians of what roleplaying has always personally meant to me. And it's awesome to see you embrace the traditions of the game's origins, all while making it fresh and exciting for a whole new generation. Now, it's up to the rest of us "gamers" to go out and introduce that generation to the hobby. And you've given us the perfect tool to do it.
Just my two cents,
--Neil
That's worth more than just two cents. Well said, Neil.

I just can't get over the feeling of how this reminds me of getting my first Basic D&D Red Box back in the 6th grade. I so want to get this for my nephew and share that feeling with him.
Thank you Paizo for making that feeling a possibility.
And I want to buy like a gazillion of those cardstock minis. They're the bomb.

Absolutely love this new box format and it's contents!
Some products and features I'd like to see in the future now that we have the Beginner Box:
1) Have the entire Bestiary 1 & Bestiary 2 set of monsters available as a cardstock counters (just use existing art from Bestiary), with monsters which appear in bulk (orcs, goblins, etc.) as standalone sets so you can get lots of them. I guarantee you I and many others would buy this. Also, have a large range of character portraits (again, just use existing art, and print the cardboard counters in China). Woohoo!
2) Support running Pathfinder Society modules in 'Basic/Beginner' mode. This would do two things: 1) I know so many people who don't care for extra rules like attacks of opportunity, combat maneuvers -- how about just sanction running Pathfinder modules in this 'Basic' mode way, with the caveat that GM's advertise this in their game announcements? And 2) It would allow GM's to run Society modules for Levels 1-5 in 'Beginner' mode -- so you can advertise 'Newbie Friendly' games which ALSO give you Pathfinder credit, yet don't use rules like AoO, combat maneuvers, etc.
I do know many of the 'OSR' crowd who currently won't look at Pathfinder due to rules complexity might take a second look if in fact there was formal support for a 'Basic' mode as a longer-term, fully sanctioned form of play.
3) Lastly, I'd love to see the 60-odd page Player Handbook (or whatever you called it) as well as the 4 character sheet dossiers available for purchase in PDF and/or hardcopy format. This way a GM can buy the beginner box once, but run literally dozens of 'introduce newbie players to the game' sessions by just buying the incremental parts they need rather than having to buy another box set each time they run an intro game. What a great way to get GM's to evangelize the system! I also think this is a whole new market -- I know many teenage type players who are willing to play but not willing to read a 500 page manual. If a GM were running a Beginner Box game, the GM or players could buy Player Manuals for each player. After they mastered that part they could move on to other books.

Would it be possible to play the first volume of an adventure path, using only these rules? I suspect some conversions would be necessary.
I think so. The to-be-posted online content talks about using material for the full PFRPG (what to do when you see mentions of disarms, AOOs, and so on), and there generally isn't too much crazy stuff in the first vol of an AP, so you should be able to manage it.
I didn't see this question asked/answered yet:
The Beginner Box provides you with enough rules to cover levels 1-5.
How many levels worth of XP does the included adventure material provide?
I'm thinking along the lines of the classis DnD Basic box that came with 3 levels worth of material in Keep on the Borderlands, etc.
The included adventure doesn't quite give you enough XP to advance to second level. The to-be-posted online content has a small adventure that may put you over into 2nd level. The focus of the BBox is teaching you the game and explaining that the GM's job is to create more adventures for the PCs--and James Jacobs gave a very nice map and plot ideas for an adventure to follow the included adventure.
Definitely getting this as soon as it hits British shores.

Yes, it's a 1st-level mini-dungeon with about 5 encounter areas that you could play before or after the adventure in the box without spoilers for the adventure in the box.

I was especially happy to see the part about the counters. I was wondering if there would be more pc worthy counters than the four pregens. Will all of the Iconics be represented on sheet of counters?
The only iconics in the box are the four pregens. However, in addition to the four pregens, there are counters for male and female versions of each combination of race and class in the Beginner Box (2 genders × 3 races × 4 classes + 4 pregens = 28 tokens usable for PCs). Of course, the ones that players don't claim can be used as NPCs, too.
And I don't recall if Erik specifically stated this, but there's also a token for every monster in the GM Guide, with multiples for creatures that often appear in groups, such as goblins, skeletons, and orcs.

How compatible is the Beginner Box with Pathfinder core? Will I need to completely reroll my character to advance from Level 5 to Level 6?
Very compatible. As an example, here's a 5th-level fighter I built just using the Beginner Box rules (by creating a 1st-level fighter and following the level-up instructions character levels 2–5). Note that this stat block format is arranged this way because it mimics the character sheet format in the Beginner Box, so stuff isn't in the order or place it normally is in Paizo stat blocks.
Everything mentioned here is in the Beginner Box (so javelins of lighting are, the Quick Draw feat is, and so on). I included some notes as a new player might write them on his character sheet (such as noting that Weapon Focus gives you +1 on attack rolls with that weapon).Blue text are designer explanations.

(The Beginner Box doesn’t use armor check penalties, so his skill totals don’t include the armor check penalty that he’d have in the full version of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.)
(The Beginner Box doesn't include favored class bonuses, so you don't see that figured into his hp or skill totals.)

Power Attack (1st-level character feat)
Improved Initiative (human bonus feat)
Cleave (2nd-level fighter bonus feat)
Iron Will (3rd-level character feat)
Weapon Specialization (longsword, +2 on damage) (4th-level fighter class feature)
Quick Draw (5th-level character feat)
(J) EQUIPMENT
+1 longsword, +2 scale mail, +1 heavy steel shield, shortbow, 20 arrows, javelin of lightning (1), potion of cure serious wounds, potion of invisibility
(For simplicity's sake I upgraded the armor and weapons he started with at 5th level, rather than building him a custom set of armor and weapons appropriate for real-iconic Valeros.)
So, as you can see, this character is almost perfectly compatible with the full version of the game. All you'd have to do is add the ACP, add the favored class bonus hp and/or skill ranks, and calculate CMB/CMD.

I was thinking it might be nice to just re-use the flipmat and just populate it with progressively tougher creatures and different challenges. Beginners would quake with fear about what they would encounter on the next version of the map.

Just watched the video and WOW.
Is it bad that I was sad I wasn't young enough to experience the full re-entry into gaming with this set? =)
I started with Moldvay's '81 Red Box, and this set has that same feel to it. I especially wanted to note one BIG difference (other than the level 3/level 5 difference of course), and that was the inclusion of Wilderness rules. I think this is a magnificent thing, as all too often people who 'make their own adventures' these days can ONLY think of the dungeon.
Also...the artwork on the covers was fantabulous, but I would like to touch on JUST how well the interiors look, with the illustrations for darn-near-everything. Very classy! And the manner in which the dungeon is tied, room by room, to game concepts was an excellent decision.
The cardstock mini's, what can I say?! Other than 'Me want, nao!', that is.
And finally...a full flipmat? I'd post that meme picture of the black and white-era applause guy, but...
Excellent-looking product, and one I'll definitely be picking up despite knowing no one who needs one (except my wishful dreams of forgetting everything overnight, of course!).

I'm throwing caution to the wind and predicting that this product will usher in a rebirth of interest in the pen-and-paper RPG hobby.
It answers 3 common complaints I hear from people who are considering PnP:
"It's too complicated."
The BBox simplifies the rules, and takes you by the hand by introducing the rules step-by-step through an intro adventure.
"It's too expensive."
No longer does a person have to worry walking into a brick-and-mortar store, and see that not only do they have to buy multiple player books, but also a bestiary, a GM book, miniatures, dice, flip-mats, etc. All of these components are provided in the BBox.
"We don't have a GM."
The BBox has an intro adventure for the GM, and introduces rules-knowledge on running the game in the context of an actual playthrough. For me, I think this is the most important part of the BBox for growing the hobby: exciting new young people to become GMs and taking them by the hand and showing it can be fun, rewarding, and learnable!
Now, one thing I can't evaluate yet from the preview is whether the prose is as respectful of its audience and as evocative as the Mentzer Red Box text that I first read at the age of 9, going through the intro adventure and rolling my dice. The 4E Red Box booklets were very uninspiring to me and did nothing to open up my imagination, perhaps dreaming of growing powerful and someday encountering on a red dragon, etc. (I mean nothing bad about the 4E system; just the 4E Red Box booklets.)
It would be great if the BBox intro adventures were as evocative as my first experience with the original Red Box. There are things that tabletop roleplaying makes possible that simply can't come from video game RPGs, such as the emotional involvement, the Shakespearean drama, the tension of wondering what the GM is hiding behind a particular door or whether there is a trapped hallway, the fact that you can take any action you want, a genuine fear of character death, and so on, and so on...
I'm wondering, did the Paizo staff think of this aspect while preparing the BBox, and perhaps look back on "classic" box sets that grew the hobby?
<< By the way, when a Paizo staffer responded to someone suggesting that point-buy be included in the BBox by saying "Rolling dice is fun!", I knew you guys were onto something and you won my faith in this product. :) >>

I -REALLY- love the character sheets. Especially the premade ones with a list of actions for the PCs. "What can I do in combat?"
Is there something similar on the blank character sheets? I wouldn't mind constructing some for the We Be Goblins module and running with that.
This is looking like a definate buy for me, along with my very first hardcover. I'm starting off a new group of players soon and my home game is still using 5-cent coins and skittles for monsters.
It's a shame it's released at the end of the month, though. What're the chances of us seeing a blank character sheet in the previews for me to play around with? :P
Monteblanco |
Very nice. It seems the components are all high quality -- nothing that reminds me the crappy cards WotC included in their Red Box. If only Paizo could create an Expert expansion including support to the tenth level, perhaps a few more classes and none of the more complicated rules, then I would have a reason to play it myself.

I thought this video would be the perfect thing to show a co-worker’s 11-year old son who has expressed interest in Pathfinder. What didn’t dawn on me until he started watching it is that this video is for the Beginner’s Box but directed at the established gamer. It never defines roleplaying or the fantasy elements of the game.
I showed this video to a co-worker’s 11-year old son. He is looking for the next step after board games and expressed an interest when I told him about Pathfinder. “Perfect,” I thought. “This new video will tell him everything he needs to know about the Beginner Box”. Except it doesn’t. It shows me, as someone who already plays the game, everything I need to know about the Beginner Box. I need to know that Beginner Box monsters won’t have CMB/CMD scores. He needs to know more about what these monsters are, what they can do, and what he can do about it.
Are there any plans to create a second video that address the basics of the game, like what a roleplaying game is and discuss the fantasy elements and creatures that populate the world?

I'm going to add-on here and point out that E6 is mainly geared at hitting various capstones in 3.5. Sorcerer's 3rd level spell, Character feat at 6th, a few class abilities. This went back and forth when the Beginner box was first discussed, but an E5 works very well for everyone save spontaneous full casters.
@ Ad targeting. That felt more like it was targeted as US, the forum dedicated peeps who started in on the early think-space on the box.
Good side is I didn't see to much in the art work (save the "dying" image) which wouldn't let this go down to ages 8+ with the right parent/adult oversight. It almost makes me want to write "Beginner" adventures that are disguised lessons in mathematics, critical thinking, and perhaps a bit of literary skills. I'm twisted like that :P.

Erik,
Are there any plans to release the non-counter contents of the Pathfinder Beginner Box in PDF?
What about releasing follow ups to the Beginner Box Heroes Miniatures Set, featuring more of the iconic Pathfinder characters?
They've said numerous time that they will be putting up PDFs of the books for this set.
What I'd like to know is if there is the posibility of selling the two books (Hero’s Handbook and Game Master’s Guide) seperately.
Steve Geddes |
I'm not a PDF user, by and large, so this is purely to satisfy my curiousity..Is it permissible for a subscriber to get this set, pass the box on to a beginner GM and give their four buddies copies of the PDF of the hero's handbook? (Presuming subscribers get free copies of the PDF, of course).
I've never really been clear as to whether it's allowable to provide some or all of the PDFs to your friends for use in a private game. It feels wrong to me, but it also feels impossible to police. Plus I'm not really a child of the digital age, so perhaps such use is just expected for such products.

Passing on the PDFs themselves wouldn't be allowable. I think (and I'm sure Paizo staff will correct me if I'm wrong) that it would be permissable to print up four copies and give the printouts to your friends.

That would seem reasonable to me (though difficult to enforce). I just wonder what "personal use" entails in the context of someone getting this as a GM and needing players.

Hi,
I wonder if this box is a one shot, in order to introduce RPG to beginners, and then they all have to switch to PRPG, or if you're going to publish new adventures and new contents in the future for this "lite edition" ?
I mean, is it a new game that will live by his own like PRPG, or definitively players have to switch to PRPG after that because you will not develop it more ?

This is more a learning/teaching tool a way to get new players interested in the system and roleplaying. It is not meant to be a new system or a new game. Its a stand alone product to help ease people in much easier then the massive 500 page core rule book.
If you want to learn more, go past level 5 and the like, the full system is there and this product is just a way to ease new players into it.
