(#Q-24) “Tanuki Trouble” Gameplay (Inactive)

Synopsis:
During the Year of Unfettered Exploration, the reappearance of the planes of metal and wood destabilized the Maze of the Open Road, the extradimensional maze the Pathfinder Society uses to transport personel and good across vast distances. In trying to stabilize itself, new entrances and exits appeared, one in a Tanuki village in Minkai. The tanuki had some fun pranking travelers in the maze until some Pathfinder agents defeated them at their own games. Now the village is on good terms with the Society, but the Pathfinders would like to have a lodge in the village to oversee this new exit. The tanuki are amenable, but only if the Pathfinders do some favors for them first. Of course the PCs are the ones tasked with these favors.

Mik-Mek scores first "blood", Cirri softens the middle, and the triple assault of Schek, Granny, and Hungry finish the deed. In short, the combined efforts of the party eliminates all the flames - animate and inanimate - saving the "playhouse" and restoring safety to the village. But one question lingers... Why?

Schek looks around, but is unable to make a conclusive determination. But Granny Deadybones is able to put a couple rumors together into a more cohesive possibility: That the fire elementals were (most likely) summoned by a nearby kami who is responsible for keeping this part of the forest.

What more? Everyone knows where this kami lives! But... nobody is willing to go. The leaders - Kenta and Mimiko - are "too tired" to make the short trek. The other tanuki are too ashamed to go - and most of all Shuuto!

Fortunately for the forest, the party is resourceful, and rather than paying visitation by themselves, have ways of combating these blatent excuses!

Enlisiting Responsible Tanuki

Convinging Shuuto to come will take 1 success to Request (easier) or Coerce (harder) - or to at least make an offering in his own stead.

Convincing one of the Elders to come (especially Kenta who was drumming at the party!) by offering to carry them w/ Athletics (easier) or simply explaining the importance of setting a good example w/ Diplomacy (harder) or w/ Lore (if it applies) will take 1 success as well.

Each PC can attempt a single check to Enlist or to Aid (w/ another skill, if it applies) Enlistment!

And, whether going alone, or with company, the party then follows the villagers' easy directions to the kami's lair!

House Call

Traversing the valley’s gentle slope up to the kami’s lair is almost too easy. But this isn’t hostile territory; it’s a formerly peaceful forest. Then, the air changes, becoming thicker, heavier. A stone pedestal for offerings stands before a massive cherry tree encircled by gleaming white omikuji hanging from a thick rope. The tree rumbles with a tremendous bass that’s felt more than heard. The rough semblance of a humanoid face pushes its way to the bark’s surface, followed by the rest of a humanoid body. “Who are you?” the kami asks, their voice making the very air shudder.

"I am here to mend relations between the spirits of the forest and a local village of well-meaning but slightly irresponsible pranksters who have let things go entirely too far with their jests and japes. Granny stares at Shuuto expectantly.

Shuuto hides behind someone as Granny initially approaches him in the village. They move aside, revealing him. He looks at her, but his eyes are down. Quiet, he listens. The whole village watches, and he feels their stares. He takes the lecture, but doesn’t speak. Before leaving with the party, he casts one more glance at Fumika, who nods reassurance to him, and goes…

Shuuto coughs, looks around nervously, and "Um, so I'm sorry I offered you fake food. I thought it would be funny. It's kinda funn-" he stops himself there, putting his hand over his mouth as if to "swallow" the sentence from being fully born, and backtracks to the apology "Um. It's definitely not funny. The fake food. Because now I'm in trouble"

Did he learn his lesson?...

Either way "Yaseikami, I am called" the kami answers "I am disappointed in you, Shuuto" (he winces as if to be struck down on the spot) "And now, ōmukade have been allowed to exit the Maze of the Open Road and prey upon the valley’s wildlife. To begin make it right, you must escort them back out of the valley by force" he pauses, then presides over "Is this something that you, Shuuto, are willing to make happen?"

Shuuto shrinks away and looks to you!
