Complications
Unsettling: Even in her human form, her skin is oddly dry and many ordinary folk find her creepy without understanding why.
Two Lives: Her past life Amunet awakened during the Mummy's ritual and remains awake. Helen is usually in charge but Amunet may take over if she feels passionately different from Helen about something.
Motivation: Stop people from using dark magic and protect people from its outcomes; her sense is once she fulfills enough of this purpose, Isis will allow her to die and travel to the afterlife.

Background
In 1933, Helen Wise was just your average spoiled, wealthy daughter of British gentry who had a knack for languages and a yen to travel. On a trip to Egypt with her father, who was funding an archeological dig, she became entranced--literally--by a local Egyptian scholar who turned out, long story short, to be the Mummy, the High Priest Imhotep, mummified alive for attempting to seduce the High Priestess of Isis Amunet thousands of years ago.

And Helen just happened to be the reincarnation of Amunet. Imhotep used magic to hypnotize her into joining him in a ritual chamber and began to perform a ritual to merge her body with the mummified remains of her past life. He stabbed her with a ritual knife, but before she succumbed to the injury, she managed to issue a prayer to Isis, who struck Imhotep with holy light, and Helen's father came upon the scene, burning the scroll that had given Imhotep life, seemingly killing him. However, Helen found herself dying--or rather she had died from the half-completed ritual, but without it completing, she was fated to become a mindless zombie. The goddess Isis appeared to her, giving her instruction on how to save herself--but it involved mummifying herself as Isis did for her husband Osiris. She chose to do so--a horrifying procedure, operating on and embalming herself--wanting to be sure Imhotep was gone for good and to stop others from unearthing secrets better left buried in ancient tombs. Her father was horrified by what she became and she lost touch with him--although later, she learned he left her enough money in his will she could live without difficulty.

The ritual had an odd side effect: the consciousness of Amunet awakened as she merged with the essence of her past life's body. Amunet has her own ideas, and an ancient priestess's view of morality and social hierarchy. While Helen and Amunet usually agree on most things, especially when it comes to responsibility with magic, they can be at odds, and sometimes Amunet's consciousness can take over Helen's body if Helen repeatedly ignores her desires.

Over the decades, she's become a scholar by day, maintaining a mostly human-seeming form, teaching linguistics classes at Oxford University, where no one ever questions just exactly how long her tenure has been. By night she is an adventurer, hunting down evil monsters like Imhotep (who she's killed three times now) and looking for hapless folk who have been transformed to help them and be sure they don't turn against humankind. She has learned several rituals of Isis from her alter ego, and can invoke the full power of the Osirian mummy she has become, powerfully strong and nearly impossible to harm on the long term.

Appearance
In her usual form, Helen has some vestiges of her former beauty, with high cheekbones and warm hazel eyes, but her skin is taut and dry. She keeps her dark hair pinned up and dresses well, covering much of her body to conceal just how embalmed she is.

When she invokes the full form of the mummy, she appears wrapped in "bandages" with a gold burial facemask--the very ancient funerary mask that was placed over Amunet's body thousands of years ago.
