"Someone might try to use the coach to get her out, though? Coach seems like the lead most likely to run away if we don't check it now. Let's do that!"
GM Watery Soup |
Is there a lot of merchants and travellers in Anactoria or is it a rather isolated town with the stagecoach we are speaking about the main way to get goods out of town?
The stagecoach would be the main way to get in and out of town, especially, uh, in the middle of the night. I'll take that as confirming your vote to investigate it.
---
After walking a few miles down the road, the Pathfinders discover the stagecoach mired off to the side of a narrow track in the bog. The coach has been nearly pulled free, and the half dozen passengers and drivers wave to the Pathfinders for help.
Apparently, the driver, Gribolt, went on a smaller track for a “special pickup” and got the coach stuck in the bog. However, before the party can pry at that ominous admission, a heap of moss lurches out of the swamp. Animate, vaguely humanoid amalgams of peat moss attack.
We're on Slide 6. Please place yourselves in the yellow box around the stagecoach.

Please do.
Lazzare is a bit puzzled to find the coach stuck in the bog. And then surprised again to see the amalgams of moss coming for them: "Whatever or whoever stole the Maid, it started quite the series of events..."

When the last of the monsters has fallen, the civilians and the driver, Gribolt, come back out of hiding. Gribolt is grateful that the Pathfinders saved his life, and is happy to answer any questions.
Since there's more or less one path forward from here, I'm going to railroad you a bit and assume you ask about the "special package" mentioned.
Gribolt readily admits that a man named Ottos hired him to pick up a "special package" at a nearby abandoned farm. He hasn’t been told exactly what it is. Strangely, the original plan was to pick up the package after dropping off the passengers in town, but Ottos intercepted the wagon on the road not more than an hour ago, insisting that he pick up the package at once and make the passengers walk the rest of the way.
Gribolt barely had time to consider the matter before Ottos ran off into the bog, nervous and scared. Gribolt tried to follow (Ottos's job is very lucrative), but couldn't make it very far off the main road, and the wagon got stuck when he tried to get back onto the main road.
The driver indicates that the farm is less than half a mile down the road.
I will move y'all to the farmhouse unless there are objections.
GM Watery Soup |
The full moon and stars provide dim light on the path leading up to the abandoned farm.
The narrow trail ends at the stone ruins of what was once a farmhouse. Most of the walls have fallen in, and a circular outbuilding is overflowing with peat harvested from the surrounding bogs. Recent boot tracks lead down the trail and to the doorway of the only intact building in the overgrown yard.
Describe how you're approaching, and also, how your characters are seeing in the dim light.
Lazzare |
Lazzare takes a dozen of minutes to attune to the bog and the storm around him. The storm reduces in power, but there is still quite some wind (5-foot emanation of whirling storm around Lazzare).
Lazzare is a bit proud of his connection between the stagecoach and the Maid (the player is, too, Lazzare really feels like an Oracle since the beginning of this adventure :D ).
"Let's make it to this farm, it looks like Otto got more curse than he can handle."
-------------------------------
At the farm, Lazzare is still producing his own whirling storm and has no way to shut it down. He nearly screams for Flory to hear: "Surprise won't make it. And I think Otto wants to get rid of his curse so we should hurry to get to him before he gets himself killed..."
And Lazzare stares at the horizon: "... or worse."

He approaches the farmhouse with no concern for the lighting, because he is a goblin.
Massee Pregen 2.1 |
Not being the stealthy kind, and pretty straightforward and confident, Jadran heads towards the farmhouse with his shield at the ready. He takes advantage of the light provided by Flory and perhaps Loong. "Nice place, someone's been harvesting that bog muck." He comments as he moves ahead.

Meadow and Zibini hear Evgeni and Ottos arguing inside the building.
For the sake of brevity, I'm going to narrate, rather than put into quotes, everything they admit to. This is intended as a plot reveal, so I can clarify OOC if there's any ambiguity.
Evgeni is getting nervous, and thinks that the wagon should be here to pick up the Maid already. Ottos, clearly the more experienced criminal in general, but not the mastermind of this particular crime, reassures Evgeni that the wagon will be here soon, and that he's as eager as anyone for Evgeni to be on the way to be off to Caliphas, since that's when Ottos will get the remainder of the payment that's due.
Evgeni expresses relief that he'll finally get to take the Maid away from this “miserable village” to the University, insisting that its powers are best studied under the tutelage of his professor. Ottos expresses concern that Evgeni has bought into his family's own propaganda, and insists the Maid is nothing but an inert corpse. He also shows concern that the rumors that Evgeni spread about the Aspis will bring too much attention to the village.
Meadow and Zibini return to the group, relaying the information they've acquired.

Once we're all in agreement Jadran does the following.

Huh. Wait. Does that mean it is all real?
GM Watery Soup |
I've moved your icons to where I think they would be if the party were to approach and talk.
As soon as Jadran's light illuminates the farmhouse, Evgeni and Ottos yell in terror. Jadran's words, although soothing, are unheard as they attempt to flee. Unfortunately, in their haste, they knock over the coffin containing the Maid.
Unknown to Evgeni and Ottos, something has corrupted the Maid’s normally benign (and supposedly non-existent) mystical powers. Since she was removed from the Tarsolu home, the Maid has been weeping tears as told in the legends — but the tears are of blood. The coffin is nearly full of blood when it spills open.
The blood immediately boils and evaporates, causing a red mist to coalesce and roil along the ground. Immediately after the blood spills, a shrill cry rises from the bog to the west, and balls of glowing lights begin to drift towards the farmhouse.

The balls of glowing light accelerate towards the Pathfinders, attempting to shock Zibini and Jadran.
Red Shock vs Zibini: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (20) + 17 = 37

Both shock their targets critically. Shield Blocking for Jadran

--Round 2
Red Wisp (-0 hp, light 20', Recall: Occultism)
Yellow Wisp (-0 hp, light 20', Recall: Occultism)
Note that the wisps cast a 20' aura of bright light around them, so those without LLV can target them normally ... this round. Muhahaha.

"Ah! No hitting! Not nice!"
Zibini pushes away in the wisp's direction. Then he tries to find some humor. He laughs. He laughs enough for several goblins, which there are.

"Meadow" |
"Eeeww! Gross! I didn't know bog mummies were filled with gas! And what are these glowy guys doing here?"
Meadow picks her target and moves to assist her friends.

Flory Buntzer |
”Have at them, Sir Miles!”, says Flory. She casts a bluish aura around him, and he crawls closer to their assailants.

Jadran sizzles as the zap jolts him good "What are these little bolts of lightning!" He draws his sword, raises his shield and slashes at the yellow one in front of him hoping it does some good.

As Meadow fires, Zibini flicks a hand. Another arrow, a shadowy duplicate, precedes hers. Perhaps it may distract the creature from avoiding the real one.
↺ Shadow Projectile. Before resolving Meadow's attack, Red must make a DC 21 Will save. On anything but a critical success it's Off-Guard to her attack. On a failure it also takes mental damage: 3d8 ⇒ (3, 5, 8) = 16, or double on a critical failure.
It also becomes immune to shadow projectile for one hour, but I don't have any more 3rd-level slots to cast it with anyway.
