Welcome Everyone to the Skull & Shackles: Red Sky at Morning discussion thread, the place for Out of Character discussions and general frivolity.

GM Whiterose |

I think I have all the relevant information on the Campaign Info tab. Pulling it all together from the various parts of the book was, to say the least, challenging. If there's anything I've forgotten please let me know.
Also If you have any ideas for any additional entertainments for me to add, please say so.

Nightfiend |

This is Trinity checking in.
I will likely begin as a trapper ranger. That should fill the role of trap breaker. If someone else brings along a rogue, I will aid or play a second up position as trap breaker. Ultimately, I intend to branch out of ranger by second or third level and focus firmly as a 2-handed fighter. That will fill the role of a martial front liner who can trap break. Startin race will likely be a duel talented human, which will allow for a bit more diversity with starting skill points.
From what I have heard so fare. We have an arcanist, druid, trapper ranger, and monk? We could use a face, depending on skill sets, and possibly a bit more healing.
Carried over rolls.
Skill Points (3)
Starting Gold (220)

GM Whiterose |

I played a Freebooter/Trapper Ranger once.
Kragor Bloodskull

Nightfiend |

I have a fighter in another game that I decided to dip trapper ranger in order to open up disable device. It made sense seeing, as the main door opener, he could simply inspect the door and then post that he would open it if it was free of traps. The alternative was to rotate a rogue in, which added a lot more down time as we waited for the conclusion of said inspection. Ultimately, it ended up being a time saver, so I decided to start with it from the get. A little lighter on feats from day one, but the trap breaker role is now filled, which means others can now feel free to expand their options without that concern.

Ever_Anon |

Yelena here. I somehow missed that you'd created this thread already.
I'm reconsidering the storm druid. While I still want to play a caster-focused druid, with an arcanist and a zen archer I'm thinking an animal companion might be good to help out in melee. (Plus it would ease the pain of early levels as a full caster.)
GM, how do you feel about dinosaur animal companions, specifically the Spinosaurus? That feels cheesy to me but also really fricking cool.
My less-cheesy thought is a Boa Constrictor. (Who's a good little big danger noodle? You are!)

GM Whiterose |

Sorry for the delay. Yes, 15 point base buy + 1d4 points. Average (or better) starting gold. Emerging guns, if anyone takes a Gunslinger I'll reconfigure the treasure appropriately.
Before committing to a two-handed fighter type, do you intend to use the "eye patches and peg leg" optional damage rule? I would hate to build a two-handed fighter and then loose a hand.
Not a fan. You're BDH's, others may get scarred and maimed but you will come out without a scratch.
I'm not against dinosaur companions, I'm just kind of meh about them. I mean if you're going to find them anywhere the Mwangi Expanse would be the place.
The Wrenches will be waiting for you at the next tavern.

Torilgrey |

bonus?: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Okay I’m looking at gunslinger (Pistolero), possibly then into swashbuckler (picaroon). Gets into the close quarters cutlass and pistol fighting shipboard. What skill would you qualify crafting black powder under? I’ve got some to start, but haven’t ever played a gunslinger before. Also looking at some face skills.

GM Whiterose |

Gunsmithing would cover creating black powder and ordinary bullets. Craft (alchemy) would be needed to create alchemical cartridges.

OK, I wasn't a fan either, but I didn't want to be surprised after building out a character only to find that the build is incompatible with an amputation.

Jezanna of the Deep |

Ended up going in a different direction considering the rest of the party. With an arcanist, zen archer, gunslinger, and two-handed fighter it didn't look like we were going to have much in the way of face skills. So I built a Lunar Oracle instead of the druid. Moon, tides, ocean...it all makes sense for this campaign. Plus I still get to have an animal companion :)
Question for the GM: I'd like to take a crocodile, but they start with 1 Intelligence instead of 2 like most animal companions. That limits the number of tricks they can learn. Any chance you'd consider letting my crocodile start with 2 intelligence? I'd be willing to give up a point from Jezanna's stats in exchange. If that's a no I'll probably pick a wolf instead.

Gah, didn't realize there was a link to this!
Kinda scrambling to recover after the Chicago trip, catching up on things like laundry, my play-by-posts, getting back in the swing of things at work, etc.
I'll get started on assembling my character sheet ASAP, but the basic concept is an Arcanist from Varisia, specifically Kaer Maga, who was sent by her instructor to deliver an item to the Mystic's Redoubt in Port Peril, though I can't decide if it'd be funner for this item to have been stolen with her other gear upon being press-ganged to the Wormwood, or if she successfully made the delivery and stopped at the Formidably Maid before she was due to set sail back to Riddleport...Also, she'll be angling for the Bloatmage prestige class.

Henry the Red |

This is Nightfiend's submission. More or less, the crunch is done. Let me know if anything is incorrect or needs to be changed. I should have Red's background compleat before long.

Jezanna of the Deep |

Other than equipment and the question about her animal companion Jezanna should be done. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions.
Gold: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5) = 15 x 10 = 150

Henry the Red |

OK, here's Red's background. Hope it fits the intro correctly. Look it over and let me know if anything needs to change.
On this night, in particular, a young woman by the name of Yolanda Redington found herself at the mercy of the Shackles and its residents. Pregnant, strung out, and ready to give birth, the young woman laid bare upon a shoddy table within one of the many drinking halls that made up a majority of the Shackle’s business front. The foul weather, be it wat it may, was the least of her concerns while severe pain ignited throughout her entire body. Because of her past abuse of drugs, nothing seemed to dull the pain, which was beyond anything she had ever experienced. Her screams blended with the thunder as both continuously echoed in tandem. Soon the scrams stopped just as the storm passed, reveling in its wake a new life and then taking another. Yolanda gave what little life she had giving birth, which was in some small way a blessing. A child born to the Shackles, now a ward to those who witnessed the event. Some say the Eye of Abendago christened the birth, other say it was a curse. Either way, the child, who the locals named “Henry the Red”, was thought to have some sort of higher calling. A fate linked with the Eye of Abendago in some way.
Born to a life in the Shackles, Henry found himself beholden to a vast number of locals, who supported and raise him. No single father or mother, but a large community of family who continuously indulged in skullduggery. With a strong back and a sense of survival, Henry not only survived, he thrived. While growing stronger by the day, it didn’t take long before he found himself aboard one of the many ships that frequented the Cove. From ship to ship, whether it was out of loyalty to someone he knew or to simply earn some coin, Henry work diligently and earned a reputation of being a worth crewman. A crewman that didn’t seem to mind an occasional run in with piracy or theft. After all, life in the Shackles sometimes required one to step over normal moral boundaries to survive.
One night, after a long week at sea, Henry overheard a couple locals talking. One mentioned his childhood legacy, something about it being connected to a tavern called the “Formidable Maid”. After a long vouge, he felt a pint of ale and a good story might make for an interesting evening, so he sought out the tavern and ordered up a pint while he waited for this so-called destiny to present itself. Pint after pint, they kept coming as the night rolled on with nothing standing out as being significant or destined. Before long he lost track of how many pints he consumed, which brought about a night of swirling thoughts and vague memories.

Making my rolls here rather than cluttering up the CotCT thread:
Benevolent GM Skill Point: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Arcanist Starting Gold: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 I'll be taking the average.
GM, how do you feel about a dhampir in the party? I'd mitigate the negative healing via the Life-Dominant Soul feat (and the dayborn alternate ancestral feature, though I'll still probably wear sunglasses for style!), and as a spellcaster I'm going to be trying to stay out of direct danger as much as possible anyway. If it's too disruptive I'll play some other ancestry, but this'd be the easiest way to roleplay a vam-pirate, which'd be pretty metal! And it makes a certain amount of sense too, since Kaer Maga (where the character's from, I don't expect to actually GO there) has a large concentration of vampires among other undead, especially with Ankar-Te where the undead are citizens!

GM Whiterose |

If everyone could get their final builds posted we can kick this pig later next week.

Jezanna of the Deep |

@GM: May I give up one point from Jezanna's point buy in order to start a crocodile animal companion with 2 INT instead of 1? Choosing between crocodile and wolf (with the Intelligence being the deciding factor) is the only remaining build decision I have to make.

GM Whiterose |

just go ahead and bump it up (you found a smarter than average crocodile, something I'd expect when selecting an animal companion).

Jezanna of the Deep |

Brilliant, thank you! In that case Jezanna (and Chomps) are completely done.

GM Whiterose |

Take your time. There's really no hard set start date

Isyphene "Izzy" Thrice-Born |

Archpaladin Zousha reporting with my character's profile.
I've mostly got the sheet filled out, but I'm hammering out some of the minor details like height and such.
Does "Thriceborn" as a singular word or "Thrice-Born" look better for a last name? The idea is it's a riff on the euphemism for undead citizens of Kaer Maga, the "Twice-Born." Just not sure if the hyphen makes it look unattractive or if I combine it into a singular word it stops resembling the original word. Yes, I'm overthinking this. <_<

I also like Thrice-Born. It looks cooler to me than Thriceborn.
Speaking of which I have four posts left to decide if I want to add anything to Jezanna's name. She definitely doesn't have a last name, but should I add some sort of piratey title? If so does anyone have any ideas on what? Names are not my strong suit. (*cough*Sir Chompsalot*cough*)

I like Jezanna of the Deep. Probably not a title she'll use often, but it sounds both cool and appropriately piratey :)
I also really like Captain Chompsalot. This is what I mean when I say I'm not good with names.
Those videos are fantastic. I love the long-suffering quartermaster but the captain is hilarious. Branding!

Isyphene "Izzy" Thrice-Born |

Can't wait to hear the tall tales of how you send your enemies down to the Cold Below (BELOW!)!

*Hi-fives Victor* Hell yeah! Quarter-elves unite! For too long we have been silenced and ignored!
(That’s actually hilarious. Jezanna’s mother is the half-elf captain of the Shoreline Scourge.)

Isyphene "Izzy" Thrice-Born |

Alright, let's get this pirate party started!
