Evelyn shoots her crossbow. No one is sure what she was aiming at.
Evidently this goblin knows something about riding, or at least about dismounting. They hop off their critter without pause. He directs the critter to attack Azalmak and then drops his bow and draws his mace to attack as well.

With mace in hand, John approaches the goblin to do some "cracking."

John cracks the head of the goblin, felling it in a single blow. The creature it was riding still seems hostile to your group.
Evelyn and Cara both give up on their crossbows and move to melee.
Suddenly, the sound of a trumpet rings out over the field, becoming louder as its player approaches.
Purple Goblin appears across the stream and she looks angry. She throws a javelin at Cara. It misses.
javelin: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 5 - 2 = 14

White goblin comes up right behind her and uses their bow to shoot at John. It misses by a lot.

Piercing damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Blue goblin also comes out to shoot at Cara. It just barely hits,

Finally Red goblin comes out to shoot at Gaius. They also hit.

Gaius knows they are goblins and they look similar to the others. He would guess they are once again fiendish goblins, but they do look different enough that he can’t be sure.
You had already identified the dog as a goblin dog. I will let you use that roll for the lead goblin instead.
Gaius realizes that the female goblin with the javelins is the leader of this band of goblins. She is strong and knows how to channel her anger into greater combat performance. She is a barbarian. She shows definite signs of fiendish corruption so he expects her to resist fire, cold and spells. He thinks she is also capable of smiting an opponent.

John gets to shore. Fortunately for him, the goblin in front of him still has his bow out. John gets out of the water and smashes that goblin.
Cara gets her crossbow and moves up beside Gaius.
Gaius fires his bow at Red Goblin and kills them.

Evelyn shoots her crossbow at the only remaining goblin and manages to kill it.
Combat over.
Well, that was exciting! Three waves of goblins.
Looking through their stuff, in addition to the poorly made goblin weapons and armor you find:
potion of cure light wounds(4), acid (3), alchemist's fire (7), smoke stick, tanglefoot bag(3), thunderstone(2)
There don’t appear to be any more goblins in this area.
Gaius Marius
|
Gaius will take one each Alchemist's Fire, Tanglefoot Bag, and Thunderstone.
I'd recommend the melee characters each take a Potion of CLW.
Gaius searches the area for tracks to determine where the goblins came from:
Survival: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 1 = 12
| GM Bret |
Gaius finds the tracks where the goblins came out of the forest. Tracking them back from there is a bit more complicated as the tracks go back and forth over each other. It seems goblins are not inclined to maintain organized formations.
He does find one thing of interest. A single set of fresh canine tracks splitting off from the other attackers and following the fence line on the other side of the fence.

He does find one thing of interest. A single set of fresh canine tracks splitting off from the other attackers and following the fence line on the other side of the fence.
"Canine tracks following the fence?" John inquires. "That would seem to pose a more immediate 'threat' than these goblins." The half-orc places the head of his mace into the flowing water to clean it. With the weapon quickly cleansed, John smiles, "That is, if these goblins can really be considered a 'threat' at all."
Survival to Aid tracking: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
| GM Bret |
Gaius and John lead the way along the fence, the rest of you following behind.
It doesn’t take long before you hear the sounds of screaming and goblin song again. You come to a clearing with a small, one-story wooden house located in the southwest corner of a large fenced-in pasture. Thirty feet south of the house, separated by a wooden fence, is a large wooden barn. The barn's door faces east and is shut and barred when the you arrive.
The screaming is coming from the house.
There is another goblin riding another of the dogs in the clearing, singing and waving their sword around.
You can also hear the sounds of an agitated horse braying and stomping its feet coming from within the barn.
Right now the goblin and dog are distracted and do not seem to notice you.
Given the way that combat has been going, I think we can do this one theater of the mind. We are not in initiative yet because you aren’t detected.
How do you want to deal with this lone goblin rider and mount?

Everyone feel free to post a surprise round worth of actions. As long as you are about 40’ or more away there is no need for a stealth check.
I don’t expect this battle to take long, so we will do it theater of the mind.
At the signal, Gaius fires off two arrows. One of them hits, but it isn’t enough to kill the goblin. It does interrupt his singing though, which some may consider an advantage.
