GM Bret |
Since Evelyn spent 7 hours, I’m going to assume Gaius spent another two hours on research, for a total of 4 hours.
Gaius finds the same lack of records that Azalmak found, but doesn’t realize just how much paperwork it would have been had there been an official trial.
Gaius finds the same two documents that Evelyn had found. He also notices that the first documents have been tampered with.
GM Bret |
John spends three hours on his research.
He finds the same lack of information as
Azalmak found, but like Gaius does not realize how odd that is given how much Cheliax loves paperwork.
John finds the records of the missing people, but not the other details that Gaius found.
He does find the same records that Evelyn found, but does not notice that they had been tampered with.
Cara Baldaros |
sorry...forgot to come back to this...had a headache last night and didn't want to think...
Cara pores over the books, reminding her of her time in the abbey's libraries.
I wish I had some of Brother Marcus' tea right now...the libraries at the abbey were drafty...this place brings that memory back...

GM Bret |
Cara spends 3 hours researching.
For the missing people Cara finds the same information as Gaius found including the ritualistic cause of death.
I assume for the following you only used a Perception check
For the estate, she finds the same information as Evelyn found including the tampered records.
She does find the letters to a priest of Asmodeus that Gaius found, but doesn’t make the connection that he did.
GM Bret |
Evelyn: 7 hours research
Gaius 4 hours research
John 3 hours research
Azalmak 2 hours research
I had mentioned that since you were effectively in a library, you could attempt skill checks untrained.
Those who researched the estate, would you like to try the untrained Profession Architect or untrained Kn: Engineering check to try to make sense of the construction bill?
Otherwise, I believe you are done in the library.
GM Bret |
As you are doing all this research, Nixa mentions a rumor she heard last night about the estate. Someone claimed that goblins have taken over the abandoned Sarini Estate. The person telling her about it thought that the town guard should look into it.
In her opinion, it would be the army rather than the town guard who would be responsible for investigating. She also mentions how she is looking forward to starting her duty in the army in the coming months.
Gaius Marius |
"Specialized in traps and sabotage eh? We should be alert and check the grounds and inside the manor for traps particularly wherever they've hidden their records."
Speaking to Nixa, "How reliable is this person? And, if you were to guess, what young ne'er-do-wells in Saringallow would be the most likely to have taken part in the 'dares' and gone to the Estate?"
GM Bret |
Does anyone want to go out in the town to gather rumors? Most of you have time.
It normally takes d4 hours to gather information, but there are abilities that reduce that.
Evelyn: 7 hours research
Gaius 4 hours research
John 3 hours research
Azalmak 2 hours research
Go ahead and roll a Diplomacy to gather information and the time it took, or you could roll to aid someone else.
Otherwise please let me know you are ready to move on.
Gaius Marius |
If anyone has Diplomacy, or at least a non-negative Cha modifier, please give it a shot. I'd like to learn if any townspeople might have ventured to the manor.
GM Bret |
Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 4
One woman tells Azalmak “They say there's a funny smell coming from the estate, and it's the smell of rotting corpses.”
One of the more opinionated fellows that Azalmak met at the tavern tells him “Those evil Sarinis were hanged—they were hanged high! Ever think where the ‘gallow' in Saringallow comes from?”
GM Bret |
Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 4
After spending a long day researching, Evelyn then spends a long time out trying to gather rumors in the town. The next morning, she can tell you what she found out. One of the tavern’s drunker patrons proclaimed that “The Sarinis worshiped demons and devils, and they held unspeakable revels at their estate back in the day!”
Shortly after that, the drunk is thrown out of the tavern by Alcie. “I’ll have no talk of such things in my establishment!”
Evelyn, you have now spent 11 hours between research and gathering rumors. That is a rather full day.
I am going to be out most of today. I expect to move this forward either late tonight or tomorrow.
GM Bret |
The next morning you set off for the Sarini Estates. Nixa offers to accompany you but mentions that her cousin Nolaria was interested and would gladly take her place.
You get your choice of starting NPC, a young adult warrior (Nixa) or an apprentice to the priest (Nolaria). One or the other will guide you to the estate.
Gaius Marius |
@GM: Is there a chance to make a quick stop at the Mayor's office? Gaius is intrigued once (if?) he's told about “All Sarinis, red or blue, slit your throat or we'll hang you too!” rhyme. This is the first he's heard of 'different' Sarinis.
GM Bret |
Sarini was the family name. Your research told you of three members, Marcius Sarini, his wife Sadira Sarina (same report) and an adopted son Luca Sarini.
I don’t mind you talking to the mayor if you wish, but let’s do it as flashbacks and get the group moving towards the Estate as we have that conversation.
All that I ask is for the conversation in the past it be a separate post and you indicate at the top it is part of the flashback. That will help keep it separate.
Gaius Marius |
Stepping back to the Mayor's office: "We heard a child rhyming about 'red' and 'blue' Sarinis. Were there two factions?"
Gaius Marius |
i think Nolaria would be a good choice...
Well, let's see what we can do about this...occupation...haunting...whatever it is at the Sarini estate...I want to get back to Absolom...
"Agreed, it will be nice to return home if only for a bit."
GM Bret |
Flash back to early this morning.
Stepping back to the Mayor's office: "We heard a child rhyming about 'red' and 'blue' Sarinis. Were there two factions?"
Looking up over her morning beverage, the mayor says “Two factions? Not that I know of. I believe it refers to their lineage. Baron Marcius and Baroness Sadira Sarini were royalty, sometimes referred to as blue bloods. Luca was their ward and to my knowledge born a commoner, sometimes referred to as red-blooded.”
“It is part of a child’s rhyme, I don’t recall the full rhyme. It is rather grisly and not something I would want to promote.”
Gaius Marius |
Flashback
“I’m not sure if he was adopted officially or not. The issue of inheritance never came up because I believe he died before the troubles started. You would have to dig through the records to be sure.”
“Is it important? It is just a childhood rhyme.”
Flashback: "It might be important since you don't seem to be sure when or if he died. Luca's family might have hidden and be in or near Saringallow. It would make sense if they want revenge that they would engage in such a scheme against the town."
Gaius Marius |
Flashback
Looking up, she says “Hiding for about 100 years?”
Shrugging, she says “You spent a full day in the archives. If there was information to be found here, that is where it would be. Otherwise, I would suggest looking for records at the Estate.”
"I see you've never met a Taldan or Qadiran; 100 years to hold a grudge is like last week for us. We'll check the Estate; I just didn't want to pass up a possible clue."

You have been traveling along the road towards the old Sarini Estate for about two hours when you see something ahead at the curve in the road.
Some sixty feet ahead on the road, a villager is lying curled on the ground, his hands shielding his face from two ugly, blue-skinned creatures with oversized, wrinkly heads. A centipede as big as a large man hisses menacingly at the desperate, shaking villager, its mandibles oozing with venom. The monsters are covered in a greasy, purplish goo that seems to be growing from their very skin.
Pardon the lack of artwork.
Everything between the two green lines is road.
Everything above the upper line or below the lower line is ditch.
Everything else is grass.
The ditch is difficult terrain. Everything else is clear.

@GM: I'm going to assume Knowledge (Nature) for the centipede? And Knowledge (Local) for the blue-skinned creatures? I'll roll for the Nature:
Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 6 + 2 = 22
Gaius moves forward and fires at the drooling bug!
MW Composite Longbow (+1 Str): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 201d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
GM Bret |
Gaius knows that this is a fiendish giant centipede. In addition to the normal poison and ability to climb, these would be resistant to fire and cold. It has been exposed to demon bile.
He also knows how to hit one with his arrow. Unfortunately it is still alive.

Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 2 = 12
GM Bret |
Gaius recognizes the humanoids as mites, a small evil type of fey best known for their use of the Doom spell. They are also able to magically stain things. Since they are fey, cold iron weapons are useful against them. These mites are also afflicted by demon bile and therefore resistant to fire and cold.

John lets loose a howl and rushes toward the closest mite, drawing his cold iron mace as he does so.

John charges at Red and kills them with a single crack of his mace.
The centipede crawls over to John and bites at him. It only hits because of John having charged the mite.

Evelyn charges the bug, but misses.
The mite steps back from John and makes Jazz Hands as it calls out “DOOM!”
DC 10 Will save
The young man whimpers and continues to stay rolled up in the fetal position, fearing the next kick or stirke,
Right now he seems too frightened to think.
Could try a standard action Intimidate or Diplomacy to snap him out, or just kill these monsters before they can hurt him any more and then try to calm him.

John thinks this mite be dangerous.
Cara fires off a crossbow bolt at the centipede but it misses because of her needing to shoot around the other people fighting it.
