Leon the Brute |
Leon looks and listens for dangers, waits for his team to catch up then opens the door.
Perc: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 12
DM Carbide |
Leon opens the door. The revealed room is essentially a section of hallway with a larger chamber at one end; the fighter can't see the rest of the room from the door. Nothing appears to be moving from what Leon can see.
Something will happen if/when the party enters. Is Leon going to go in before the rest of the party can catch up?
Alton Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Eveleth Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Howirk Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Korgaar Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Leon Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Enemy Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Howirk Crookfeather |
Howirk carefully crosses the icy floor and follows Leon, keeping the wand out.
Eveleth |
Eveleth turns to her shadow. "Eveleth, can you take a torch into the room and tell us what you see? Yes? Great, thanks."
She pulls out a vial of alchemist's fire and hands it out to her shadow, who seemingly picks it up and carries it towards the open door.
Casting mage hand.
DM Carbide |
By itself, the vial sheds no light, Eveleth. What was your intent?
Eveleth |
Mostly chaos agent. Because of darkvision, Eveleth doesn't carry torches. If someone is willing to offer a torch, I'll take it (and tie the alchemist's fire to it) and send the torch down the corridor.
DM Carbide |
The issue with seeing into the room is not the amount of light present (it's dim but not dark), it's geometry--from outside of the room through the doorway, the party only has line of sight to the corridor.
Korgaar the Keen |
Korgaar slowly trudges over to Leon and the others. "Hold up. On my way now."
Moved, and took the liberty of moving Eveleth as well since it sounds like she's meaning to be close to the door.
Eveleth |
Not changing my action. Eveleth will follow by line of sight as far as she can and stop without stepping into the corridor.
ETA: Thanks, Korgaar, agreed.
DM Carbide |
The party assembles just outside the door and waits.
How long will you wait there?
Leon the Brute |
Leon shrugs and waits a few moments (a round) for the levitating thing to… levitate on in. Then he tromps on inside.
Intent is to move up to the corner to see what is in the bigger room.
DM Carbide |
Does everyone follow Leon in? (Note, btw, that mage hand only has a range of 25', the vial can only move 15'/round, and Eveleth has to be able to see it to direct its movement.)
DM Carbide |
Because this is potentially important, I need everyone to check the map and let me know if their position is acceptable before we continue.
Howirk Crookfeather |
Position acceptable.

Round 1 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Enemy-acted
Leon
Korgaar
Howirk
Eveleth
Alton
Suddenly a monochrome-looking woman in leather armor appears out of nowhere and hurls a vial at Leon! It hits the fighter and bursts, spraying corrosive liquid over him and Eveleth. Leon, take 10 HP acid damage. Eveleth, take 5 HP acid damage with a DC 14 Reflex save for half damage.
Before anyone can react, the woman throws another vial at Leon, adding to the acid pouring down over him. Leon, take another 8 HP; Eveleth, take 5 HP acid damage with a DC 14 Reflex save for half damage. Then she steps back along the wall.
Everyone can act!
Acid damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 2) + 3 = 10
Attack on Leon: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Acid damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4) + 3 = 8
Leon the Brute |
The Brute, viciously wounded and screaming in pain from the agony of the stealthy quick attacks, rushes forward at his foe. Knowing only murder in this fight or flight mode, his scythe moves on its own into his hands, chopping away.
Acrobatics on icey floor: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14
MW Scythe: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 for Slashing: 2d4 + 7 ⇒ (4, 2) + 7 = 13
”WHY EV’TIMG TRY KILL US!?!”
But in the back of his mind he knows the answer. The world is a cruel place.
Eveleth |
Reflex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19 HP 6/9
"Forget the torch and stay close, Eveleth!" Eveleth calls out. Her shadow slinks back and covers her like a cloak.
Eveleth willingly fails the concentration check when taking the damage, dropping the Mage Hand (dropping the Alchemist's Fire). On her action, she casts Shield and closes in.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
DM Carbide |
Forgot to mention that this room isn't as cold, so the floor isn't icy. Also, Eveleth, you need to make a second save against the second attack.
Leon lands a solid blow on the woman.
Korgaar, Howirk, and Alton to go!
Howirk Crookfeather |
Howirk holds fast to the wand and tries to catch up to the injured.

The halflings follow the front line. Also forgot to mention: Leon takes another 3 points from the acid that hit him on the surprise round.
Korgaar?
Enemy: AC 18 T 13 FF 15 HP taken: 13
Korgaar the Keen |
"You alright Big Man?" Korgaar calls as he hustles forwards. "Looks painful. Time for some payback, eh?"
Unable to get close enough to wield his axe against the aggressor, Korgaar calls upon his arcane talents...
telekinetic fist vs touch AC, into combat: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 3 - 4 = 16bludgeoning damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
DM Carbide |
Korgaar's arcane attack hits, buffeting the enemy.
Round 2 (ongoing):
The enemy takes a sort step to the side. Then she claws at Leon and Eveleth, dropping both of them with a single blow each. Leon takes a final 2 HP acid damage, plus 6 HP from the claw. I think that with the extra acid damage last round he's at -2 HP. Eveleth takes 5 HP, putting her at -4.
Everyone conscious can act!
CCB: 3d20 ⇒ (11, 16, 20) = 47
Claw damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Claw damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Enemy HP taken: 16
Alton Hilltopple 2 |
Alton moves and holds out his club.
ready action to attack if the creature gets near him
attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

can anyone heal at this point?
Howirk Crookfeather |
Ready for such an eventuality, Howirk taps Leon with the wand.
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
can anyone heal at this point?
Yes, just not well.
Leon the Brute |
-2 HP then 0 with the healing seems right to me.
The big man tucks himself into a slightly harder to hit target.

Alton prepares an attack, while Howirk cures the fallen fighter...a little, but enough that he's conscious. Leon defends himself as best he's able.
Korgaar, you're up! The enemy is badly wounded--finish her!
Enemy: AC 18 T 13 FF 15 HP taken: 16
Korgaar the Keen |
Obviously very badly injured? If so, Korgaar will fire off his Wand of Magic Missiles. If not, he'll close, rage and attack. Will roll both options under spoilers.
magic missile force damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
raging axe: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Have moved on map assuming melee needed.
DM Carbide |
She looks bad, but not "one magic missile will drop her" bad.
Korgaar rages and closes, landing a glancing axe blow on the woman. It's not enough to bring her down, unfortunately.
Eveleth, you can invoke your daily use of your orc ferocity ability and take an action this round, if you want.
Leon the Brute |
Leon gives a weak thumbs up at the dwarf striding in to save the day.
Eveleth |
Spittle falling from her mouth, Eveleth growls, "You'll have to strike her this time, Eveleth!"
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Damage: 1d12 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
DM Carbide |
With her last gasp of effort and rage, Eveleth chops at the woman and misses. Then the half-orc falls, unconscious and bleeding.
Round 3 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Enemy-acted
Leon
Korgaar
Howirk
Eveleth-unconscious and bleeding
Alton
The woman rounds on Korgaar, clawing and biting at the dwarf in a feral rage almost as intense as his. Take 20 HP damage, Korgaar.
Leon, Korgaar, Howirk, and Alton can act! Eveleth, roll to stabilize.
CB damage: 1d6 + 1d8 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (6) + (8) + 3 + 3 = 20
Enemy: AC 18 T 13 FF 15 HP taken: 22
Korgaar the Keen |
"Yaaaarrgghhh!!!"
Grievously wounded, Korgaar continues the bloody struggle...
raging axe: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
DM Carbide |
Spitting curses with her last breath, the woman falls.
Out of combat! More to come when I can access the scenario.
Leon the Brute |
Leon slowly and carefully pulls out a potion then points at the downed Eveleth, ”Try da wand on her.”
CLW potion drawn in case we start having issues with the wand(s).
Alton Hilltopple 2 |
"I can't use the wand can anyone?"
Heal to stabilize the half orc: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
I don't want the character do die. Are we doing something. I can use my re-roll if need be
DM Carbide |
Howirk can use the wand...at least some of the time.
Howirk Crookfeather |
Howirk moves his way forward and tries to transmit some positive energy to the half-orc.
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
It takes a number of shakes and flicks, but he eventually gets the wand to work.
No 1s!
DM Carbide |
The woman was carrying several vials. Two contain apparent potions, two contain something that looks like grease, and the fifth one that might be useful contains coarse granules of slate-grey material. She also has a cloak that detects as magical and a well-made suit of studded leather armor.
The potions are CLW, the second pair of vials contains alchemical grease, and the last one is an adamantine weapon blanch.
Elsewhere in the room are a few desks, three locked chests, and a locked standing cabinet. Fading in and out of vision, the shadowy form of a slablike table holding an unconscious, vivisected human man, his chest rising slowly with each breath, is superimposed over the southernmost desk. Medical implements and alchemical devices are spread across nearly every surface, some more substantial in form than others. The man is apparently drugged into unconsciousness. His lower torso has been sliced open and clamped that way. His forehead bears the same dark rune that the party has seen before.
Leon the Brute |
By the time the caster has gotten his wand to work, Leon has poured his potion down Eveleth’s throat for CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 healing.
It would take Leon two more rounds to pour the potion, but would instantly stabilize (if she hasn’t stabilized or been stabilized by then) and heal her by that amount.
He looks at the mage when he finally gets the wand to work, ”Keep at it, we needs a lotta healin.”
Keep rolling till you get a 1 or Leon has gotten at least 25 HP back, please and thank you!
DM Carbide |
You also have the two CLW potions you captured.
Leon the Brute |
Leon drinks one of the potions and hands the other to the mauled dwarf, ”Dey taste bettah if dey free.”
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
After that we frankly just need a bunch of UMD checks made. I think we have multiple wands too, so a 1 won’t completely shut down healing.
He moves over to check the cut open person, ”Anbuddeh know how ta get dis guy free witout killin him?”
DM Carbide |
Some curing on him would probably work.
