Korgaar the Keen |
"Who're you?" Korgaar asks the captives.
"One at a time!"
The dwarf scrutinises the female, curious to see if she's one of the Blakros women. "Where were you brought here from?"
"Howirk? Can you try my wand on me? That sod caught me."
I'll roll CLW charges under spoiler, in case Howirk fritzes the wand.
DM Carbide |
The woman is dressed in simple clothing that has seen hard use, and she definitely does not look like someone who's spent their formative years as an heir to the wealthy and powerful Blakros family. "I was bought in the Coins by some feckin' richie, along with these two." She indicates the two men who don't have symbols on their foreheads. "Some guard-types in oh-so-fahncy uniforms brought us to this place, along with two ladies in really nice clothes and jewelry. Anyway, the guards brought the three of us in here, chained us to the wall, and left in a hurry. After they were gone, all of a sudden the room changed, and those two--" She points at the pair with the tattoos. "--appeared, chained to the wall like us. Couple of gray-looking folks looked in on us, they gave us a few slaps and some new bruises, they left, little while later we heard a fight outside, and here you are. Hope you gave those gray b@st@rds what for."
They're chained up with masterwork manacles--even Leon couldn't break them without tools, and the locks are challenging even if you had someone with Disable Device.
DM Carbide |
The door key doesn't work on the manacles.
Leon the Brute |
The brute frowns, ”Anbuddeh pick da locks?”
If no one answers to til he affirmative he goes back to their prisoner, ”Who got da key to dere locks? Where they be?”
Korgaar the Keen |
"Those are strong chains" Korgaar opines. "Likely that my big friend here has the right idea. Someone's got the key, and finding them is what we need to be doing."
DM Carbide |
Stone.
"One of the guards who brought us in here locked them."
Leon the Brute |
Leon drags the two guards (one alive, one not) back to the slave area, ”Eider o dese two? Ifn nawt, we go find guard, bring key back. We getcha outta heah.”
DM Carbide |
"No, the human guards. The faahncy-dressed ones."
It looks like all the manacles take the same key--even the ones on the humans who've been here for some time.
Leon the Brute |
Leon shakes the one he tied up, ”Where dose guards at? Across hall? Down hall? You no lie, I know if you do.”
DM Carbide |
"What other guards? We were the only ones the Onyx people hired."
Leon the Brute |
Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10
”Hrmm, checks out. Less go look fer da key den. Ande udder leddies.”
DM Carbide |
Chag Pesach sameach!
The humans aren't happy about being left behind, but there's not much anyone can do about it without the key.
The other door in the room with the two fetchling guards leads to an apparent storeroom--a simple chamber of unadorned stone piled from floor to ceiling with boxes and crates, with barely enough room left to allow the staff to squeeze between the towers of dusty, mothballed exhibits. On the Shadow side, there's a chain and leash fixed to the wall, with no sign of what might have been secured.
There are two more doors out in the hall. Where to?
Korgaar the Keen |
"How about across the hall? Who knows how many rooms the shadow museum has - might as well start with the closest."
Leon the Brute |
The brute checks it for dangers and opens the door when everyone is ready.

Did anyone want to heal Leon?
Howirk Crookfeather |
Howirk attempts to utilize a wand on Leon.
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
I think that heals up Leon to full.
Then Korgaar.
UMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
Healing rolled by Korgaar above
Leon the Brute |
Wand charge noted, thanks!
The burned flesh healed, the big man opens the next door.
DM Carbide |
A brightly-lettered sign over the door reads, "Treasures of Distant Goka," while a shadowy sign in the same area reads in block letters, "Cold Storage--Perishable Specimens Only."
More to come when I can post from my computer.
Leon the Brute |
"I wrastled a bear once, didn't go well."
Unless something attacks while looking inside, Leon strides into the room.
DM Carbide |
Something will happen, but not right away. Apologies for the delay; it's been a busy couple of days at work. I suppose it's understandable that any sodium leak would be a big deal, even if it was only a few tens of milliliters.
The door opens easily, letting a blast of frigid air out into the hall. Dozens of mannequins dominate this room, each decorated in the trappings of distant Tian Xia. Ceremonial armor of samurai from Minkai and the silk gowns of courtly ladies catch the eye, but the delicate tea sets in long glass display cases seems out of place next to the strange shadowy figures leaning against the fan-decorated walls. Humanoid bodies encased in ice stand scattered throughout the room, and a glaze of dark rime covers the floor.
Leon finds, on entering the room, that the floor is slippery--he can move without falling if he walks slowly, but feels like he risks slipping or falling if he tries to walk normally. DC 5 Acrobatics check to move normal speed, can't move at all if you miss the check, and fall if you miss the check by 5 or more. You can move half speed with no Acrobatics check.
Keep track of where you're walking, please.

Leon the Brute |
”Is slick. Carefuh.”
Leon will move at half speed everywhere, unless noted with an acrobatics check.
He moves a bit farther into the room.
Eveleth |
Carefully stepping into the room, Eveleth consults her shadow.
"Do you see anything in here? Anything important to our mission?"
Cast Detect Magic, moving at half.
DM Carbide |
As Howirk reaches the end of one display case, a metallic-looking snake emerges from hiding and strikes at him! It misses, though.

”I sed, be carefuh. Back up an I geddit.”
Double move half speed while drawing scythe.
"You got it, Big Guy," Howirk replies as he carefully backs away.

Korgaar enters the room, and catches sight of the metallic serpent...

"An iron cobra! Could be a guardian left by the Blakroses, but without knowing the Words of Command we've no choice but to break it!"
Not knowing the construct's defences either, Korgaar blasts it with a wand.

"A snake?!" Eveleth exclaims, rushing into the room.

She slides in behind Howirk and lobs a glob of black... something at the metal beast.
Acidic Ray touch attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
DM Carbide |
Round 1 (ongoing):
Howirk backs away hurriedly while Leon advances carefully. Eveleth's acid ray misses badly, and Korgaar's magic missile dissipates fruitlessly. The iron cobra's bite also misses badly.
Alton can act, and then everyone else.
Leon the Brute |
The big man yells as he swings, ”Choppah time!”

Leon winds up and swings for the fences (or at least for the snake). The iron cobra proves to be quite agile, though, and narrowly ducks the blow.
Howirk, Korgaar, and Eveleth to go! Note that the cobra is now in melee, and is thus harder to hit with missile attacks without the right feat.
Iron cobra: AC 20 T 13 FF 18 HP taken: 0
Howirk Crookfeather |
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Howirk grabs the wand of cure light wounds and flanks Leon. "Got your back."
Korgaar the Keen |
"Blasted thing is immune to magic!" Korgaar snarls as he reverts to his axe and closes in, moving slowly across the icy floor.
Double move at half speed.

DM Carbide |
Alton starts a lengthy spell.
Round 3:
Everyone but Alton can act!
Eveleth |
"Mmmm!" Eveleth mutters as she advances, "Flank snake! Good for iron!"
She finishes getting into position across from Leon and attacks.

Leon looks confused for a moment, then guffaws, ”HAW! Like Flank Steak! Nahce.”
He choppity chops again.

Both Eveleth and Leon connect with powerful blows, and although the cobra proves harder to damage than might be expected it's still reduced to junk.
Out of combat!
The frozen humanoid bodies have generally been partially dissected, and from the expressions on their faces they were probably still alive when the process began. All have the same rune tattooed on their foreheads as the two captives on the south side of the hall.
A cursory search of the room turns up a suit of masterwork parade armor, a masterwork composite shortbow, and an orc double axe with blades carved to look like dragon's heads.
There's a door in the room, or you can return to the hallway. What do you do?
Leon the Brute |
Leon goes over to the door and looks for a sign. Maybe it says ‘lady hiding place.’
DM Carbide |
There are no signs on the door in either plane, and Alton finds nothing else of interest.
