Turiik |

Turiik pales--visibly despite his sunburns from the Thuvian desert where he stood only a short time ago from his own perspective--as the enter the ward, surrounded by the infirm. He seems to relax as they pass by only afflicted people. However, when Edibaro turns and brings them to Elena, the shadow of a dark expression flickers briefly across the herbalist's face. He sucks his breath in sharply and the shadow is gone, replaced with a slightly wide-eyed nervousness.
"D-do you need me to treat your wounds?" he asks.

Meadow the Ranger |

Dr. Lazarus quickly adjusts to his new surroundings. As Meadow reaches to pick up the amazing book, the Doctor says, "If I may, dear lady ... would you mind terribly if I hung onto the book. I have a special velvet-lined pouch in my bag here for such valuables." Ever hopeful to have the honor caring for such a unique tome, Lazarus carefully stows it away.
Meadow rolls her eyes and pulls the book out of her backpack. "Sure thing Professor. The book is pretty finicky. It seems to think it's too good for my backpack." Even though she is speaking to Dr. Lazarus, her words are dripping with sarcasm and seem to be actually intended for the book itself.

Silence the Snowy Owl |

As Lazarus provides what he hopes is a good home for the unique book, he strokes the binding like Tess was doing, as he places it in the velvet pouch.
Snapping his fingers, the forensics professor exclaims, "Yes yes, have any of you read the best-selling book "Burrowing Beasts: Unearthing the Truth about Voles, Moles, and More" ? He looks around, disappointed. "Anyone? No? I feared not. Fortunately, I have a copy in here somewhere." As he rummages in his bag, he drones on, "The bulette has a large dorsal fin and appears as a landshark." Holding the book aloft, he points to a picture, and continues, "As you can see here, they leap from the earth to strike their preferred victims, halflings." Indicating Meadow, he adds, "We're in luck, dear lady, as they don't prefer elven flesh."
"Screech." Silence flaps his wings.

Tarcog is only half listening until mention is made of spitting lighting.
He waits for Edibaro to finish talking.
“Do you have a skilled metalworker, preferably a gold or silver smith? Someone who could make light chains of metal? If not that, perhaps metal bars? Hang the chains around this person, put the ends of the chains in salt water. The chains should steal the electricity and deposit it in the water.”
“It is not good to contain electricity. It can build up to a dangerous degree.”

"Treating my wounds... would be good. They hurt like crazy," Elena says. She shakes a moment, closes her eyes, and says, "Not now not now not now..." She bites her lip and then look at Turiik again. "Sorry. I wasn't talking to you, but to myself."
Then she looks at Tarcog. "Our metalsmith was trying to work the forge when he... um... melted. I'm still hearing his screams."

“Why halflings?”
Meadow makes a face. "Apparently Halflings are delicious. I'm sure it doesn't help that halflings in bulette territory tease them by playing a crazy hide & seek game known as 'Rushin' Bulette.'" The young archer ponders for a moment. "Oh you'll want to be careful. Besides geing good burrowers, Bulettes can jump like nobody's business. They'll leap straight in the air and strike you with both claws."

When Meadow shares what she knows, Dr. Lazarus laughs, "Rushin Bulette??? Hoho! Halflings are indeed clever creatures ... what an inspired name!" Answering her question, he shrugs, "No mention of owls in here. Maybe Silence should fly a safe distance, just in case." Addressing Tarcog, the Doctor shrugs again, "Alas, my book merely says they prefer halflings. Perhaps because they're so clever. Rushin Bulette indeed!" He is clearly amused by the game.
The Doctor knows a thing or two about electricity, but he leaves that for others while he assists Turiik in treating Elena's wounds.

Sheesh! I go to bed for a bit and wake up to 15 new posts in Gameplay. No rest for the weary I guess. :)
Jayma's remembers a story told to her by her halfling 'maidservants' when she was a child back in Brastlewark castle. She now thinks it was meant as a boogeyman story to try and scare halfling children into line, but she took it the other way and pestered the poor women for more details. The idea of running around dodging huge charging creatures sounded so exciting at the time. A little older and wiser now, and having actually watched large creatures trampling smaller ones into pulp, she wasn't so sure it was something she wanted to experience anymore. She bows her head in guilt as other memories of her halfling 'servants' come to mind unbidden.
She's a little surprised when Meadow mentions the very same game, and shaking her head, adds, "Poor halflings. Only the swiftest and stealthiest of them survived Rushin' Bulette." She shudders at the thought of having a bulette land on her with its claws. "I don't plan on letting them get that close to me."
Listening to Edibaro list the different abilities that manifested in some of the locals, Jayma can't find a common thread that might indicate the type of magic that's been unleashed in the tunnels.

Turiik squats down beside Elena and opens the satchel at his side, which releases the pungent aroma from within. He pulls out a clay bowl and pours some water into it. Notably not looking at his patient, he lays out several clean rags next to the bowl. Finally turning back toward Elena but not meeting her eyes, he begins to remove the bandages from the wounds on her arm. His hands tremble slightly as he reveals the injured flesh.
First, he dips the a clean rag in the water and gently washes the wound. Then he pulls out a small bundle of some sort of dried wort. He mashes the leaves in a pestle and pours them onto another rag. This he folds closed and steeps in the water before applying using it to wash the wounds again.
He reaches toward a needle and thread, but his hand diverts toward a lancet. His fingers hover over the lancet for a moment while his face takes on an expression of tense concentration. He snatches his hand back inexplicably before reaching for the needle once more, picking it up with determined intension. "Sorry," he mumbles to Elena as he begins to suture the wounds.

“Did you notice anything strange about the creature you fought?”
Both Dr. Lazarus and Turiik treat Elena's gaping wounds, disinfecting the inflamed tissue and sewing up the worst of the claw marks. Elena gasps with pain a couple times, but stays determinedly still through the worst of it. "Thank you! That's... better. So... you were asking... about the bulette?" She closes her eyes and grimaces. "It was... awful. It healed... almost as fast as we hurt it, and it had this grinding scream... so powerful it ripped flesh from bones... and hurled the whole bulette backwards."
Elena trembles, and her dark eyes meet Tarcog's. "I only... survived because I threw up a shield that... um... ate some of the energy? Except every time I threw up the shield, the power I'd absorbed reverberated inside me and... it gets harder and harder to control. I'm afraid that if I do it again, it will all overflow... and rip me apart from the inside. Or rip someone else apart."

"Edibaro, what can you tell us about the keep and the catacombs underneath it?"
Edibaro strokes his chin. "How much do you know our history? Do you know of the Earthfall meteor that hit near Tapláche, about our hero-gods, and Aroden and the veins of creation?" He glances at your faces, and then realizes that there might be at least some in the group who were not schooled in Arcadian history.
"I have heard that in your part of the world, a piece of meteor fell into the ocean, but that Aroden carried it to the land, and it made him and a few others into gods. The meteor that fell here also had powerful magic. Its influence led to the rise of powerful, nigh deific individuals, particularly here among central Arcadia. The hero-gods of Xopatl helped shape the land and lead our young nation to a time of prosperity, using their powerful abilities to defend our region from threats of all kinds."
He gestures to the beautiful pink stone walls, some with relief carvings showing heroes doing great deeds. "This keep created by Yllaldo the Manifester. Yllaldo was among the oldest and most powerful of Xopatl's hero-gods and would regularly leave the nation to face dangers that other hero-gods couldn't. We in the Order of Yllado are a fighting order, trying to maintain Yllado's legacy of protection. The Keep has not just this fortress, but an extensive maze of tunnels. The chambers have been used over generations as storage, dormitories, libraries, and more. Since the tunnel network appears to be massive, there could be any number of different chambers below. The area where you're going was used as burial chambers, some dating back from Yllado's time."
Edibaro nods towards the still shaking Elena. "From what she told me, the bulette seemed to have dug into the tunnels by chance and even appeared to be carving out a den for itself. I would work under the assumption that it's still living in the den and won't take kindly to visitors.”

Meadow brow furrows as she ponders this information. "Soo...Where did that meteor land? Was it near here? Could the bulette have disturbed some buried fragments of this meteor that turned those people into hero-gods? Or maybe since some of the burial chambers date back to Yllado's time perhaps the bulette disturbed one or more chambers containing either meteor fragments or even the remains of a hero-god or someone affected by the original meteor. If the Starstone in Absalom can turn someone into a god and the the meteor that landed here can create demigods then surely there's enough energy in fragments to cause these crazy powers to manifest."
Meadow looks intently at Edibaro. "Do we know who might be buried in the closed off area? Are there any records in one of your libraries that might hold that information?"

"There have always been strange powers that arise here, so close to the veins of creation. Some of them have been horribly destructive, but if the person survived the initial outburst... well the powers faded after a bit."
He sighs. "Mine did, when it happened to me nearly three decades ago. Then it was a less frequent occurrence, maybe one incident in every ten years or so. I was a boy, and I survived. I think that's why I'm still standing. Though we have a few others in the order who are still able to work, so maybe some can resist the magic."

When Edibaro asks if anyone knows of the local history, Dr. Lazarus holds up a hand, as if to interrupt the monk, "Why yes, of course I do, my dear man. You'll find that there's little that escapes me."
He'll use Arcadian Lore via Loremaster Lore at +14.
Whether or not he recalls anything, the Doctor continues confidently, "Naturally, I know all about the meteor and your hero-gods. But please ... continue. Don't let me interrupt." It doesn't occur to him that he says that immediately after he has interrupted the poor chap.
When Tarcog asks about the bulette's scream, Lazarus shrugs. "Alas, my book didn't mention an auditory attack, but thanks to the dear lady Elena, it would be wise to be prepared." He smiles at Elena in thanks for the detailed report.
Ready to explore!
Since we think we're heading into a burial chamber, is burial chamber something Lazarus can Pursue as a Lead? The relevant part says "This subject is typically a single creature, item, or small location (such as a room or corridor), but the GM might allow a different scope for your investigation."
No worries, if it's questionable. Just worth asking...

Jayma listens to Edibaro's story about the Starstone pieces that reached Arcadia and their effect on Yllaldo and the other Xopatlese hero-gods. She nods at Meadow's speculations. "Yes, it may be that Yllaldo buried something dangerous below the keep to keep it safe. If the bulette released a faded fragment of the Starstone from its storage, that would certainly explain the strange powers manifesting in some of the locals."
"If that's in fact the case, then we'll need to remove the bulette as a danger and try to put things back to their previous state, or these strange new powers will continue to plague your people."

Dr. Lazarus's book, Xperiencing Xopatl: A Traveller's Guide talks a lot about Xopatl from a tourist viewpoint. It goes into detail about Aroden's thirty-five years in Xopatl, studying their ley line network, the Veins of Creation, and it talks about Xopatl's golden age when there was almost limitless magical energy available to enable magic work and the creation of magic items.
Jayma remembers two facts that she heard once about Xopatl at a dinner party. First, that Aroden had interfered with the Veins of Creation when he was studying them, entwining his own power into ley line network, which boosted the golden age of Xopatl when he ascended to Godhood. Alas, that backlash from Aroden's death destroyed the same leyline network that Xopatl was dependent upon, and only the actions of many arcane botanists allowed them to repair a smaller version of the network to keep Xopatl functioning. To this day, Aroden is known locally as the man who brought ruin to Xopatl with his interference.
Two, Xopatl has a secret Jaguar priesthood that has elaborate rituals involving blood, chocolate and hallucinogenic drugs that keep that leyline network functioning, much to the ignorance of most of the populace.

Edibaro's mention of the Veins of Creation triggers a memory. She remembers being at an after-preview dinner party to celebrate her well-received performance as the protagonist in a soon-to-open play. "What play was that again? I forget. With so many performances it's hard to keep track after a while. But I do remember the dishes being particularly good, and I distinctly remember the strange scruffy gentleman that insisted on sharing his adventures with me. Yes. It's coming back to me now. He claimed to have travelled to Arcadia and back and regaled me with stories of his time over there, and how he barely got back alive."
Jayma clears her throat. "I've been told that when Aroden came here, he interfered with the Veins of Creation when he was studying them, entwining his own power into the ley line network, which boosted the golden age of Xopatl when he ascended to Godhood. Alas, it seems that backlash from Aroden's death destroyed the same leyline network that Xopatl was dependent upon, and only the actions of many arcane botanists allowed them to repair a smaller version of the network to keep Xopatl functioning. To this day, Aroden is known hereabouts as the man who brought ruin to Xopatl with his interference." She falls quiet, racking her brain to remember more of what the strange man told had her about Xoptal. "It's not like I thought I'd ever actually come here. I would have taken more mental notes had I known."
Another recollection hits her and she snaps her fingers. "Oh, I remember now." She's about to say what it is out loud, but reviewing it in her head, instead decides to whisper it so that only the Pathfinders can hear. "Apparently Xopatl has a secret Jaguar priesthood that has elaborate rituals involving blood, chocolate and hallucinogenic drugs that keep that leyline network functioning, much to the ignorance of most of the populace." She taps the side of her nose with a knowing look, then tosses her head back and emits a little laughs at her theatrical display of subterfuge.

Under Edibaro's breath you hear him say, "Jaguar priesthood?"
A few minutes later, one of the bed-ridden people starts to shake and scream, throwing off sparks that fly everywhere. "Chaac, no, give it to me. Give it to me." Edibaro rushes to the man's side, drawing some of the excess energy into himself, much smaller sparks flying off the older monk and then wisping away. When the man subsides and falls asleep again, Edibaro sighs. "My 'gift' was anti-magic so powerful it disrupted spells, cracked magic items and crumbled magical edifices. My family had to retreat to the jungle for a few years until it subsided to what it is now, a faint echo. I've been using it to leech off some of the excess power, but..."
At that moment, the boy initiate arrives with three older monks in tow, who look like they've been working the fields and kitchens. "Edibaro, I brought them to you!"
"Thank you, Yatzil." Edibaro nods to the boy, who runs away from the sickroom, then turns back to you. "I asked these three volunteers to escort you down to the tunnels. They are Colel, our beekeeper," Edibaro points a muscular woman in her forties, "Batz, our weaver," a thin man in his late thirties, "and Fabio, from our greenhouse."
"Please, follow them and find what's causing this," Edibaro says.

Colel rolls her eyes. "You must forgive Fabio. Always asking a thousand questions. But you may have questions of your own, right?" She starts taking you down a set of wide stairwells that lead to the tunnels. "The stone tunnel and chamber walls were all carved by Yllado himself. We sometimes wonder if the Hero-Gods were taller than normal mortals, because Yllado made the ceilings so high."
The ceilings are 20 foot high.
The walls feature a regular pattern of glimmering bas-relief stars along the wall. The glimmering is too faint to really light the chamber, but when Colel touches a star, all the stars in the room burst into a much brighter light that illuminates the whole hallway. "Note the vining floral patterns on the floor," Colel points. "See how the leaves sort of point like arrows? You can use it as an obvious guide to lead you back to the surface if you get lost or separated from the group."

“Now what is this about a flame button left by the Lone Archivist?”
Jayma remembers something that the Veture Captain said back in the desert. "I expect this so-called flame button is one of the beacons that K.H.W. left behind to allow the locals to call for help."
As a bit of an architecture nut, Jayma is entranced by the contruction of the tunnels and the intricately carved decorations. "So very impressive."

Turiik looks up at a the ceiling so many yards above them. "Maybe," he muses. Looking back at their guides, he says, "You weren't with the others when they encountered the bulette were you? Do you know anything about the ward? Will we be able to retreat?"

Dr. Lazarus was also curious about the flame button and was ready to ask about it, when Tarcog beat him to it. After Jayma's logical explanation, the Doctor quickly recovers and nods knowingly, "Yes, yes, quite elementary. Once again, Jayma has taken the words right out of my mouth."
Dr. Lazarus nods his approval as Colel points out the floral arrows. Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs, he asks her. "Is the burial chamber where your people typically encounter the beast? If so, which way is that?" Even if the group explores somewhere else first, the investigator makes a mental note of the chamber.

Colel rolls her eyes. "You must forgive Fabio. Always asking a thousand questions. But you may have questions of your own, right?"
Meadow leans in and whispers to Fabio. "Never mind her. If you never ask any questions you never get any answers."
"The stone tunnel and chamber walls were all carved by Yllado himself. We sometimes wonder if the Hero-Gods were taller than normal mortals, because Yllado made the ceilings so high."

A moment later, the monks' bodies rise, still burning on despite being exhausted of fuel. They howl in pain as they reach out to attack!

Turiik's eyes widen in horror as their guides begin to burst into flame. When the monk's flaming remains rise howling from the ground and reach out for the unarmed Pathfinder, he looks frantically for Amvolwatt, remembering the dragon's promise to protect him.
"No, no, no!" Turiik stammers and lets out a shriek of fear, taking a step backwards as the burning horror steps forward. The shriek changes in tone and timber, becoming a roar. As it does, Turiik's body undergoes a change. The whites of his eyes swiftly darken to black while his black hair turns white. His face elongates horrifically to accommodate teeth that are growing into carnivorous canine and carnassial teeth. Curved black claws erupt from the tips of his fingers. "AaarrRRRRR! Coward! You're going to get us both killed!"
With a feral glare at the approaching horrors, the transformed Turiik growls, "I prefer my meat raw, but well done will suffice!" He leaps forward and snaps at the burning remains with his enlarged teeth.

As the monks start screaming in anguish, Tarcog notes “I really hope this wasn’t part of opening the seal…”
Watching Turiik transform doesn’t bother the little dragon but when he goes to bite one of the creatures Tarcog says “Might want to be more careful about what you eat, Turiik.”
He waits for Dr. Lazarus to tell him what the group is facing before unleashing his Awesome Draconic Powers™.

Hearing of what water does to them, Tarcog says “I prefer electricity, but if water is what does it…”
He moves to the other side of the hall from Turiik and then spreads his hands and chants what sound like arcane words of power in Draconic.
A wave of water flows from his, crashing into all three of the burning monks.

”Advice far too late for the fool boy,” the transformed Turiik replies to Tarcog as he crouches back in preparation for the burning onslaught.

Meadow quick-draws her bow, and then hunts prey and looses critical hit that pins White to the ground! Dr. Lazarus identifies them, and slams White twice with his hammer, and then Jayma mercifully kills White with a Ray of Frost that extinguishes his flames. The last you see is Fabio's burned face mouthing 'thank you' as he crumbles to ash. Jayma then activates a protective shield.
Then Turiik surprises everyone by switching his mild-mannered persona to a roaring carnivorous beast man. He bites into what's left of Colel. Finally, Tarcog sends out a crashing wave that does extra damage to the Red and Blue Combusted, and stunning both for a round.
