Darin gives a bit of a nod towards Ixthia to step away from the Stewards for a moment. When clear, he tells them in a low voice. The two killers at the end, they had a kill capsule with results I've seen before. Society ever turn up what happened to Iroiveth after she left us but before she tried to kill Datch few years back?

"Iroiveth? Yes, we understand that they were an agender augmented elf), who was killed by Starfinders a few years ago near Verces." Ixthia replies.

I believe that was the "official" outcome of 3-00.

'Sides that, Bisserelle or Favien have any enemies? Pair was committed enough to keep trying to kill Biss even when we were shooting back at 'em. And the sarc was dropped but plenty of cons between him and Datch didn't get touched. Gotta be some reason there

The copaxi nods. "We suspect that you are correct, but if there is a connection, we are unaware of it. More investigation is undoubtedly necessary."

"The Stewards are already on alert, though we don't know how much a head-start she may have had," says Venler.

"The Starfinders have secured the Adamantine Bastille," Ixthia adds. "As for you, we are tasking you with investigating the attack on B-block, in the hope this could lead to finding Datch or the Steward. The key card previously given to you the allows unrestricted access to the Adamantine Bastille computer systems and records to help with your efforts."

"Several doors throughout the Adamantine Bastille stopped responding to key cards," continues the copaxi. "Tt wasn’t just the one you encountered. Guidance noticed the hack and eradicated it, so there should be no further issues with traveling freely through the prison."

"Indeed. We had thought she was with you," Ixthia contacts Agent Whitforge on their comm. "Agent Whitforge, we hope you are well. We, unfortunately, have the death of an inmate to report. Another has been injured. Also, it has been reported that Datch is missing."

"Missing?" Whitforge replies over the comm. "She was transferred to Steward custody. She's already left the Lorespire Complex."

Venler looks concerned. "To whom was she transferred?"

"A Steward officer," Whitforge replies. "I can assure you that she had all the appropriate documentation and identification."

"What did she look like?" Venler asks.

Whitforge describes an elven woman with black and purple hair, the descriptions previously provided by the Horn Gang. Whitforge explains the Steward arrived right after the explosions. The Steward didn’t fully trust the Starfinder Society, so she’d been standing by to provide additional security. When the explosions happened, the Steward reported she suspected Datch, and wanted to be sure she didn’t have the opportunity to use the chaos to escape custody.

"That woman was no Steward," states Venler.

Panic overtakes the tone of Whitforge's voice. "Oh, dear! How could this have happened?!" There is a lengthy pause on the comm. "This is too much. I've got to sit down. I'm going to need a few minutes." The comm channel goes quiet.

The party may take a 10 minute rest if wishes.

"You may which to start you investigation by analyzing surveillance footage, questioning witnesses, examining the prison’s defenses for any physical evidence left behind, and reviewing the files of the targeted prisoners to determine a possible motive for the assassinations," suggests Ixthia. "Now, if you will excuse us, Venler and we need to oversee the rest of the prisoner assessments and the fugitive hunt."

Before departing, the copaxi and the ysoki lead the party to the computer terminals at main entrance to B-block. From here, the party can use the key card to access footage and review data stored on the prisoners. The area is unoccupied when you arrive. Once Venler and Ixthia depart, only the party remains in the room.

Preliminary Investigation: To learn more about the nature of the disguised Steward, assassins, and targeted prisoners, the PCs have three avenues of investigation: documentary evidence, observational evidence, and physical evidence. Each avenue of investigation requires different skill checks, as noted below. Each PC will be able to attempt up to three skill checks across the three areas of investigation, but I will call for one check at a time as information obtained may influence your choice of avenues.

Between each attempt, a PC may freely change from one avenue of investigation to another. On a success, the PC obtains the one piece of information from a list obtainable within that avenue of investigation. For each 5 by which a PCs’ check surpasses the DC, the PC earns 1 additional piece of information. Note that skill checks can be repeated, yielding different information with each success. When the PCs have obtained all the available information from an avenue of investigation, you will be notified so the PCs can focus on those avenues with further clues to discover. Some information can be discovered through more than one avenue of investigation.

The PCs are welcome to be creative and suggest resourceful uses of skills not listed belpw, but that are pertinent to uncovering information and I may allow hose skills in place of a listed check. Likewise, a PC who uses applicable class abilities or spells may be rewarded with additional pieces of information or may be able to bypass a skill check, if it seems appropriate.

The three avenues of investigation, in no particular order, dare:

Documentary Evidence: The PCs can discover pieces of documentary evidence with a successful Computers check to detect breaches or forgeries, a Perception check to search through prisoner files, or an applicable Profession check (such as bounty hunter, con artist, counselor, lawyer, psychologist, receptionist, or smuggler).

Observational Evidence: The PCs can discover pieces of observational evidence with a successful Computers check to review the surveillance footage or access databases, a Diplomacy check to gather information from witnesses, a Perception check to notice clues, or an applicable Profession check (such as analyst, bounty hunter, con artist, or criminal).

Physical Evidence: The PCs can discover physical evidence with a successful Culture check, Engineering check, Mysticism check, Physical Science check, or an applicable Profession check (such as bounty hunter, detective, mercenary, or private investigator)/

Please indicate if you are taking a 10 minute rest to recover SP. Also, each PC may now attempt one of the above skill checks for an avenue of investigation.

Beat DC by 5+, so two pieces of info.

The hireling concludes that the keycard and access code used by the Horn Gang during their escape attempt was never valid, confirming their escape
attempt was solely intended to serve as a diversion.

Further, the hireling confirms that the gear, uniforms, and weapons used by the assassins were purposely designed or modified to yield no identifying marks, logos, or otherwise traceable information.

Darin d'Xin wrote:

Success.

Based upon the initial review, the files on each of the prisoners consists primarily of sworn statements detailing each prisoner’s crimes and obtained from multiple witnesses. The documentation is thorough, damning, and quite sufficient to establish the prisoner’s guilt.

Success!

Pulling up the recorded feed on the terminal, Mr. Bison views an image of an elven Steward with black and purple hair first entering B-block 30 minutes before prior to the party' arrival in B-block. At that time, the elven Steward placed small devices near the targeted cells and stashed weapons in the guard station. She then delivered gear and a key card to the cells of the Horn Gang. These objects were all pulled out of a single backpack, a likely indicator the backpack contained a null-space chamber.

Image of elf Steward now available on Slides.

Upon first seeing the image of the elven Steward, Mr. Bison is struck by the woman's appearance, for the elven Steward bears a strong resemblance to Iroiveth, an elf present during a battle that occurred aboard a secure compound orbiting Verces that served as Datch’s private hideout at the time. Other than the elf’s name (which is presumed to be an alias), that they had a subdermal implant marking them as a Starfinder who served over 100 years ago, and that they died in the battle, the Starfinder Society couldn’t determine anything else about this mysterious elf. While Iroiveth and the Steward are clearly different people, they bear a strong familial resemblance.

Nimh Starfarer wrote:

Success +10! Nimh obtains three pieces of useful information.

Watching the footage, Nimh observes the elven Steward having returned to B-block after the emergency lights came on following the explosions. There she released Datch. Datch seemed surprised and worried at the sight of the Steward, as if the ysoki recognized her but didn’t know she was coming. All the appropriate documents for Datch’s transfer were filed upon the Steward’s arrival and the transfer looks entirely legitimate. Datch left in the custody of the Steward, which proceeded similarly to every other prisoner transfer.

The feeds within the central alley of the various cellblocks recorded the assassins teleporting into B-block and the other cellblocks. Except for those assassins that you defeated, the assassins fled the Adamantine Bastille via teleportation. However, teleporting into or out of the Adamantine Bastille should be impossible unless someone had disabled or deactivated the anti-teleportation wards in advance.

Retrieving footage of the arrival of the Steward from another camera reveals that the elven Steward had a conversation with Starfinder agent Jewel Whitforge, who subsequently made modifications to the anti teleportation wards within the cellblocks.

"What the Steward spoke to Jewel, after which she turned off the teleportation wards and then assassins teleported in, murdered, then teleported out?!? We've got to ask Jewel about her interaction and why the wards were disabled!"

I assume the above discussion with Jewel won't be one of the avenues of investigation?

-------

Assuming observational evidence hasn't yet been fully tapped out, Arratoi will proceed down that route:

Arratoi approaches the various prisoners and guards, asking about what they've seen.

Arratoi wrote:

Seeking out Whitforge to question her, Arratoi discovers that she’s already gone. No one in the Lorespire Complex has seen her leave.

When Ixthia and Venler are informed of Whitforge’s potential involvement, they have a description of her immediately sent to station security and to the security officers already searching the docks for the elven Steward and Datch. A Steward team is dispatched to check on Whitforge’s apartment.

Arratoi wrote:
Arratoi approaches the various prisoners and guards, asking about what they've seen.

Arratoi confirms from witnesses that the elven Steward isn’t a member of the Stewards. A search for information on the woman hasn’t triggered any records at all—she’s a ghost. However, the analysis does bring up a file identifying an agender elf known as Iroiveth, who looks to be a close relative. Iroiveth, which is presumed to be an alias, is identified as a suspected ex Starfinder known to have worked with Datch. They were confirmed deceased following a battle that occurred aboard a secure compound orbiting Verces, which served as Datch’s private hideout at the time. Other than the elf’s name and that they had a subdermal implant marking them as a Starfinder who served over 100 years ago, nothing is known about this mysterious elf. There is no record of them in the Starfinder servers.

Starfinder agents analyzed items taken from the assassins. Scans of fingerprints, genetic material, and other samples taken from the defeated assassins haven’t yielded any meaningful results—each pulls up a clearly false identity of an utterly forgettable local when run through the Absalom Station infosphere. The false identities were clearly created in a rush and have a history only going back a month with no accompanying identifications or registrations to make the identities look legitimate. This suggests these identities were never inhabited nor were they intended to be used again.

A witness reports that Jewel Whitforge spent several minutes yesterday using a hacking kit to tamper with the emergency door that separated the guard station from B-block.

Great job! We haven't quite finished the first round and already you guys have obtained all possible pieces of Observational Evidence.

The two avenues of investigation remaining are:

Documentary Evidence: The PCs can discover pieces of documentary evidence with a successful Computers check to detect breaches or forgeries, a Perception check to search through prisoner files, or an applicable Profession check (such as bounty hunter, con artist, counselor, lawyer, psychologist, receptionist, or smuggler).

Physical Evidence: The PCs can discover physical evidence with a successful Culture check, Engineering check, Mysticism check, Physical Science check, or an applicable Profession check (such as bounty hunter, detective, mercenary, or private investigator).

With one avenue already completed, I will allow the party to roll checks for the last two rounds in the same post (Maxamas may roll three checks for three rounds).

Among themselves, this party of Starfinders is able to piece together all of the available evidence.

Remaining Physical Evidence

The investigation yields several translocation beacons and other items that must be logged as evidence. The translocation beacons were placed near the targeted cells in advance of the assassins’ arrival via teleportation into B-block and the other cellblocks. However, teleporting into the Adamantine Bastille should be impossible unless someone had disabled or deactivated the anti-teleportation wards in advance.

The keycard employed by the assassins to open the cell doors of inmates Bisserelle and Favienn was programmed by Starfinder agent, Jewel Whitforge.

Modifications to the anti-teleportation wards within the cellblock were made before the assassins’ arrival by Starfinder agent, Whitforge.

Scans of fingerprints, genetic material, and other samples taken from the defeated assassins haven’t yielded any meaningful results—each pulls up a clearly false identity of an utterly forgettable local when run through the Absalom Station infosphere. It’s obvious the false identities were created in a rush and have a history only going back a month with no accompanying identifications or registrations to make the identities look legitimate. This suggests these identities were never inhabited nor were they intended to be used again.

Remaining Documentary Evidence

The documented evidence supporting conviction of each of the targeted prisoners, Bisserelle and Favienn, is not only substantial, but is sufficient to prevent the prisoner from qualifying for any future probation, release, reconsideration, or review.

Although the Adamantine Bastille has been in use for a considerable amount of time, each of the targeted prisoners has been held within the prison for less than five years.

Numerous agents are responsible for processing and checking in prisoners. The duties involved are usually shared among agents, even for a single prisoner. However, all the paperwork for processing and checking in each of the targeted prisoners was filed by the same Starfinder agent: Jewel Whitforge.

Upon a closer, more rigorous examination, the documented evidence supporting the conviction of each of the targeted prisoners consists of falsified documents damning the targets to false imprisonment under fictional identities.

Well done, Starfinders! You've got it all!

Shortly after reaching your conclusions, you receive a comm message from Ixthia the Unbreakable. "Guidance reports that Whitforge deployed some sort of 'cleaning' software designed to scrub all references to Whitforge from the Starfinder Society servers. Thanks to your speed in alerting us of her treachery and the nature of the information that she apparently sought to keep hidden, Guidance was able to neutralize it."

"Unfortunately, we still do not know Whitforge's current location or other capabilities. The Steward team dispatched to check on Whitforge’s apartment soon reports that no one is at the residence and the apartment is completely empty," laments the copaxi. "It is our hope that you will be able to expand your investigation to narrow in on learning more about agent Whitforge and her likely whereabouts."

Your quick success in obtaining the above information avoids the penalty to your efforts for this final investigation of Whitforge.

Investigating Whitforge follows the same rules as the preliminary investigation, save that there is only one avenue of investigation and each PC can attempt only a single skill check in this section.

The PCs can discover information on Jewel Whitforge with a successful Computers check, Culture check to recall knowledge, Diplomacy check to gather information, Perception check to search, or an applicable Profession check (such as bounty hunter, con artist, dock worker, mercenary, private investigator, or smuggler).

Each PC may now attempt one of the above checks.

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

The party learns that Whitforge is known to frequent a metal shop near the space docks, which is also listed as a part-time employer. The metal shop reportedly closed weeks ago, but has received shipments of hardware and chemical supplies within the past few days. Contents of the shipments to the metal shop suggest that someone is assembling deconstruction robots, mechanical constructs that utilize a powerful acid and are often tasked with “cleaning” an area of incriminating information and destroying any traceable items.
Caustic Retaliation (Ex) As a reaction when a deconstruction robot is dealt damage by a creature within its reach, the deconstruction robot can spend 1 Resolve Point to spew acid all over its attacker, dealing 1d6+5 acid damage (DC 13 Reflex save for half damage)

Although Whitforge’s identification file and personal paperwork appear legitimate at first glance, they’re fake. The false identify of “Jewel Whitforge” has been skillfully crafted and well composed, containing a string of identification documents and registrations that make the identity very difficult to identify as false.

I will give Maxamas a little longer to conduct any additional investigation into the robots' abilities, then move us to the next encounter sometime tomorrow.

Alas, nothing more.

With a likely lair now located, Ixthia urges, "Head to the metal shop. If you find Whitforge, neutralize her quickly. And be wary."

"Venler reports that those officers not involved in securing the transferred prisoners have already spread out across Absalom Station," continues Ixthia. "Back up agents will be dispatched to the metal shop as soon as they become available."

"Until then, you are the closest and most capable Starfinder agents available," notes the copaxi. "This may be for the best as Whitforge may have access to some sort of teleportation device, like the assassins. If we are to capture her or otherwise prevent her escape, it will most likely be done by a small strike force that moves with some stealth and speed rather than by an all-out siege of her hideout."

Following the information obtained from your investigation, you arrive at an otherwise unassuming metal shop. On the outside, the metal shop stands over 40-foot-high and has no windows.

A locked steel door bars a small entryway, the sole means by which to enter the metal shop.

What do you wish to do, Starfinders?

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

Oooh, this is fun! The door is trapped! It requires a DC 32 Perception to spot. None of the PCs have succeeded at that obnoxiously-high DC (who writes this stuff?)...

But the trigger for the trap is touch. And the door isn't opened by touching its lock or controls, but with a spell! So, the party has avoided the trap!

WELL DONE!

With the use of magic, the locked steel door that bars the entryway opens. The small entryway leads into the main interior bay of the metal shop.

The interior of the shop contains a vast bay. A large generator with massive cables fills the northeast corner, a baggage car sits in the center, and empty containers that likely once housed robotic components are scattered throughout the shop.
The baggage car and containers count as low obstacles. The baggage car is a level 1 vehicle with hardness 5, 30 Hit Points (15), EAC 10, KAC 12, Speed 20 ft. (full 100 ft.), Collision damage 5d4 B (DC 8), a Piloting modifier of –1, and an attack modifier of –2 (–4 at full speed).

A familiar-looking dwarf is here near the baggage car. It is agent "Whitforge", who has seemingly shed her disguise and is now wearing a uniform identical to those of the assassins that teleported into B-block.

Two deconstruction robots are next to the generator, while another two are finishing their duties near the central mass of crates and containers.

"The First Seeker was foolish to seek to decommissioning the Adamantine Bastille and even more so to involve you in the process," Whitforge replies. "As you've noted, I worked hard to secure my position within the Bastille. My employer was being well-served by my access and my abilities."

"But, this new First Seeker had to go and ruin everything. Contingencies had to be made. Yet, even with them in place, you Starfinders had to mettle and interfere," she scowls. "The Starfinders are not 'my friends'. A useful tool? Perhaps, for a time. At present, however, it and agents like you are simply a nuisance to be eliminated."
