(qstor) I'm 1st level lol might bring another PC
Qstor, 5+3+3+3+1 is going to land us exactly at APL=3. Per the Guild Guide, a party of 5 in Season 0 that's between subtiers is required to play the lower subtier. If you want to bring a higher-level PC to bump us to the higher subtier, that's definitely an option.
Players, feel free to discuss!

It looks like we are playing high tier now (3.6 APL should round up to 4).

Yes; I can confirm this.
GM Zin |
Hey all, real life intrusion; no update today.
GM Zin |
Sorry for the delay; holiday weekend got me.

Hey all, just wanted to apologize for the slow game. I'm currently recovering from a broken leg/ankle, and sitting up at a computer causes the ankle to swell. There are times I just run into a wall and need to leave the computer and rest my leg; sometimes that is right as I'm switching to Paizo to post, and so I don't get the post done.
One of those times is now.
Unfortunately, this coincides with a trip (this weekend) and a new job (starting Tuesday). So I will be very slow--if not simply absent--Friday through Monday, and then will be establishing a new posting rhythm starting Tuesday.
Just wanted you to know. I'm going to keep the game going, but we're going to have some growing pains here for a week or two.
I have a lot of packing to do today, while resting the leg in the meantime, so probably no meaningful post from me again until evening today (Eastern time).
Thanks for your understanding!
FYI: Alissa Moldreserva; this is her only appearance, it seems.
Vulf Sorgrim |
Take the time you need. Thank you for the heads up.
Sylvester Solstar |
Agreed. Thanks for keeping us in the loop. It will get better. :)
GM Zin |
The easiest access is up the heavily guarded stairs placed every few hundred feet.
I'm going to guess from the radio silence that this post wasn't as clear as I'd intended. Obviously, the PCs can attempt to use the guarded stairways to enter Misery Row. But maybe you have other ideas? I can't railroad you; you have to make the decision yourself.
GM Zin |
How are we doing, folks? Only two player posts so far this week. Is there anything I can do to get the engagement level up for this game?
GM Zin |
I've PMed Seebonick; I'll bot some rolls in a couple of hours if they don't post sooner.
GM Zin |
This is early notice that I will be on vacation from Wed 22 Jun through Mon 27 Jun. I will be camping at a music festival, and internet has historically been inaccessible via phones most of the time during the festival due to the amount of traffic. I don't expect that I will be able to post at all.
I will try to get a reminder post in right before I leave, but I might miss that in the rush to get going. Please continue to post in the meantime; we *will* resume play when I return.
Markus Stonewarden |
Hi all, I'm headed out of town tonight for the next 8 days or so. Will only have limited internet access while I'm there, feel free to bot Markus as needed - he's got 1 stunning fist left!
GM Zin |
Sorry folks, had a whirlwind of a weekend, and today got away from me too. Will get us back going again tomorrow AM.

Sorry folks, had a whirlwind of a weekend, and today got away from me too. Will get us back going again tomorrow AM.
Sorry for the confusion; I just assumed that I was the delay. Turns out, this is a player delay; my last post is the most recent post!
So, consider this a BUMP instead. You're being told to turn around and return from whence you came. What are you going to do about that?
Sylvester Solstar |
I think it is time to kick their butts after they refuse to free the prisoner. :)
GM Zin |
Edit: no worries! I forgot to include the -4 penalty to attacks due to the gnoll squeezing in the aisle. Theron is still alive and standing.
Okay, player death alert!
This has only happened once to me as GM before, and we were able to determine that the PC shouldn't have died. (I applied all of a monster's multiple attacks to a single PC, when the first attack made them unconscious; I ended up retconning the subsequent attacks to a different PC as logically the monster wouldn't have continues to mutilate an already-downed foe.)
This situation is much simpler, so I fear we may not find an out, but let's try.
Theron moved through a large creature's threatened square (10' reach), provoking an AoO. That AoO, combined with the gnoll's attack during its subsequent action, dealt enough damage in two blows to put Theron at -16 hp; Theron's Con is 14, which makes him pretty dead.
Please feel free to examine the spoilers. I don't include the attack bonus for the weapon in there (I add it in my head after), but I include all situational modifiers for review in a situation just like this.
Sylvester Solstar |
It should not be up to the GM to rescue PCs from the dice roller. Pretty well all fighting characters should have a reach weapon to prevent unnecessary attacks of opportunity from large sized opponents. It is a pretty basic fact of the game.

It's not so much a rescue as a double-check to make sure that I haven't made an error. I know how invested I am in my own characters; if I goofed and a PC died because of it, I'd be devastated. If it's a clean death, well, that's how the game works.

close..had three characters die...one was a lvl 1..so no biddie...Crypt of the everflame got me..TPK...other times one was a player throwing a hissy fit and bailing during combat...not ideal...it was his fault too...he had a buch of stuff wrong with his character..basically unplayable. third was just crap luck...I do appreciate the fact that it was an honest error...i wouldnt have taken it personally....maybe...lol
Sylvester Solstar |
@GM Zin - That seems reasonable to me. Why not double check everything to be sure. :)
*** Just a reminder in case anyone has missed it but you can now raise your character for 8PP and 2450 Gold. This should put it easily in the reach of most characters of 3rd to 4th level. ***
Hopefully no one will need this information but it is nice to know anyways.

I think I was in that game! Glass River Rescue? An inn by the river, religious zealots that kidnapped some dwarves?
GM Zin |
Doh! Sorry about that! I do play by the book, and the book says you can't be forced to pay.... I don't remember the particulars, but I must have felt it was in character for that PC, though, because I have chipped in towards raising PCs.
The PC who left us in the lurch should have paid for it all; it was their fault in the first place.
Sylvester Solstar |
@GM Zin - a 5' space is a 5' space so yes two medium sized characters would need to squeeze to fit into the same square. So your reasoning is spot on. Allowing Theron to 5' step back after his attack on his turn is reasonable considering that Markus announced that he was rushing in to help him out. That being said he is posting this revision after he completed his actions for his turn so you will have to decide if you want to allow it or not. :)
GM Zin |
I'd be more willing to allow Markus to have stopped back one square. Theron already used a 5' step this round, so technically doesn't have any movement available. Noting that the squeezing ruling changes the landscape for both actions, either is "eligible" for retcon.
Tactically, Markus stopping in a threatened square (instead of moving through it) and Theron 5' stepping out of a threatened square is the better play. (I did forget to take the AoO for Markus' movement; it's a new round since the AoO on Theron, so Combat Reflexes doesn't come into play.) I'm not going to go back and retcon that missed AoO in (it's my mistake), but this arrangement is cleaner with regards to that AoO as well; no AoO is triggered if Markus stops 5' back.
Since there are no exceptions to the rules with this, this is what I prefer. Note: this does leave Markus open to an attack next round by standing in a threatened square. You can still choose to close with the gnoll and I won't retcon the AoO. Leaving things as they are would force the gnoll to move on his turn to attack either of you, but you'd be squeezing with Theron (with penalties) during the gnoll's action and at the start of your action.
I'll leave that choice up to you, Markus.
(FYI, for transparency: if you research the squeezing rules, you'll note that there's a movement penalty when squeezing as well. I've chose not to apply that because the squeezing is caused by benches instead of walls. This means that 5' steps are always available options, and that applies to both sides of the combat. I'm open to reconsidering this if anyone objects.)
Sylvester Solstar |
I don't see why the gnoll should not be moving at half speed (and thus cannot take a 5' step) if he is squeezing (benches or not). Of course as the GM you can rule as you like.
I do not see why PCs would try to close with the gnoll in the first place. It just does not make any sort of sense when they can safely and easily attack him at range while he struggles to squeeze through the narrow corridor. :)
Markus Stonewarden |
Okay, since that's a clearer picture of the rulings. Markus would stop 5' back to not provoke since the gnoll is capable of doing so much damage, which would allow Theron room to escape and still act as a barrier to prevent the gnoll from advancing willy-nilly down the tight space.
Thanks GM Zin!
GM Zin |
I don't see why the gnoll should not be moving at half speed (and thus cannot take a 5' step) if he is squeezing (benches or not). Of course as the GM you can rule as you like.
This was my compromise on how to use squeezing in this particular situation. The basis of my thought is that this isn't "pure" squeezing since there aren't walls restricting any action, only the benches. "Squeezing" isn't mentioned by name in the scenario, fyi, that's just the rule I found to relate to the situation, which is why I feel I have some liberty to interpret the rule.
On reflection, if I'm picking and choosing elements of squeezing, perhaps I should have kept the movement penalty and ditched the attack penalty instead, as the benches aren't in the way of swinging weapons, but they could trip you up when moving.
Perhaps I'm spending a bit too much mind-space on this, haha.
We still have plenty of time to finish this before GameDay, so I'm going to pause here for a vote. Please let me know how you'd like me to apply this rule:
1) Squeezing attack/AC penalties only
2) Squeezing movement penalties only
3) Full squeezing penalties
4) No squeezing penalties
In either case, the rule will (obviously) apply to both sides of the combat. Likewise, we will not retcon anything that's happened up until now. The results of this vote begin with the gnoll's next action. If you don't care please let me know so I don't wait for your vote.
As a reminder, whatever squeezing rule we decide upon, the gnoll is squeezing when it's in the aisle, and PCs are squeezing when they are in the aisle adjacent (in the cross-ship axis) to another PC in the aisle (both adjacent PCs are squeezing as long as they are adjacent).
Sylvester Solstar |
I really regret bringing this up. PbP is slow by its nature and discussing this point will only encourage it to drag further. Please go with your initial ruling (as you are the GM and this is a minor decision that does not require a vote or even player input really) so we can finish off this game in a timely fashion. :)
If you really want a vote than I will choose 3.
GM Zin |
And the 3's have it. Full squeezing penalties in the aisle. The movement portion means that if you have to move past another PC in the aisle, that part of the aisle is considered difficult terrain and costs double to move through it. You can still--of course--bypass the aisle by using the benches with an Acrobatics check.

My character is certainly not going to come down to say this yet again as he is entirely too frustrated but it would be much faster (in game and even more so in real life) if you locate our lady first. Then we can escort her safely off the ship and complete our mission. At that point you can use the keys to free all of the slaves if you wish. :)
Trying to smash open the chains on every random prisoner when you already have the keys is entirely pointless and a waste of time.
