Nina does her best to hide her dismay at Thoriel's sudden and forced transformation; she knew demons had plenty of nasty tricks but this one was a particularly unwelcome surprised. But there wasn't much she could do about it as there were much more pressing concerns - namely the demon right up in her face.

Gotta protect Pai!

Hoping to keep the demon's attention focused on her and Inky, Nina utters a cry of, "For Sarenrae!" as she brings her lance to bear...

The Waking Rune

Nina fights valiantly, calling upon her goddess. She's too keen to finish the fight quickly, and her wild blows only pierce the creature's thick hide thanks to the momentum of its charge. Yet when the lance is withdrawn the wounds mostly close up. Two hits, but DR.

Inky stands ready to protect her friends.

Thoriel slithers away. The demon above her could probably step on her easily, but it just leers at her as she flees. You probably can't get that far, being a Tiny legless lizard, unless you use your 1/spelldance Fly or Dim Door. It's moot though. These demons won't focus on you yet.

The demon facing Nina turns its eldritch powers first upon Pai.

spellcraft DC17:
Unnatural Lust SLA, Quickened

Pai attempt a DC16 Will save.

if you fail:
You are overcome with the desire to kiss and caress Nina, and spend the whole of the next round attempting to do so to the exclusion of anything else.

Then it turns on Nina with pincers and stinging tails...

claw1: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (8) + 18 = 26damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
claw2: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
sting1: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (14) + 18 = 32damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
sting2: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (3) + 18 = 21damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

claw 2 confirm?: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (18) + 18 = 36damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10grab?: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (8) + 24 = 32

Although Inky fends off one of the stingers, the demon grabs Nina in one of its pincers. Even worse than the crushing blow, the hideous face within the pincer-hand extends long, rasping, barbed tongues into the gnome's flesh, twisting and tearing at her...

damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2CHA damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 A DC20 Will save negates the CHA damage, but not the extra hp damage.

Nina is torn from her saddle. Grab pulls you adjacent to the demon, seems like this necessitates that it unmounts you.

Last ditch effort here!

The Waking Rune

Pai tries a stronger spell to banish the kithangian's transmutation - and it works! Thoriel is restoreed.

Hissing in rage, the white demon attacks Quiella - first using its magic...

DC16 Will save for Quiella

if you fail:
You are overcome with a fierce desire to kiss and caress Thoriel, and will attempt to do so to the exclusion of any other actions on your next turn.

...and then its pincers and stingers.

The pincers hold, the tail strikes!

Rasping tongues emerge from the claw's hideous face, burrowing into Quiella's flesh.

damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3CHA damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 A DC20 Will Save avoids the CHA damage.

The stinger injects a vile abyssal venom.

A DC22 Fort save resists the poison, for now.

if you fail the Fort save:
You take STR damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 and you are Nauseated.

Suddenly returning to humanoid form once more, Thoriel calls out a loud 'Thank You!' to Pai across the battlefield and takes a mental note to select the perfect bottle of wine to get for the gnome when they get back to town...

...but for now, there is work to be done. The magus mutters a few words as she plucks one of her long eyelashes and places it on the tip of her tongue at the conclusion of the last word of the chant. Suddenly disappearing from sight, she takes advantage of her newfound invisibility and rushes around to get into striking range of the nearest demon.

Cast Greater Invisibility. Move via Spell Dance.

The Waking Rune

Thoriel disappears - then closes on the kithangian holding Quiella. The demon gives no indication of seeing the invisible elf's approach, though the magus notices that its bulbous head is covered with compound eyes that must see in all directions.

Nina and Quiella are up! and mounts.

Will (DC 20): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

Nina resists the strange attack on her psyche but the physical damage, not so much.

Crap! Gotta get out of here!

Though caught in the demon's grip, Nina suddenly calls out, "CHANGE PLACES!"

Nina and Inky's forms shimmer and then vanish, only to reappear in the other's original location!

Transposition (Su):

At 8th level, a summoner can use his Maker's Call ability to swap locations with his eidolon. If the eidolon occupies more squares than the summoner, the summoner can appear in any square occupied by the eidolon. The eidolon must occupy the square that was occupied by the summoner if able, or as close as possible if it is not able.

______________

I *think* that ends Nina's turn, since Transposition uses Maker's Call, which is noted as functioning as Dimension Door - so Nina and Inky swap places. Could not find anything definitive on whether this means Inky is now grappled or not; will wait for GM's call before I post for Inky.

The Waking Rune

I will say that Inky is not grappled because Transposition causes Inky and Nina to swap squares, no more than that. However, given that it works like Dimension Door and Nina is not taking Inky with her, it ends both Nina and Inky's turns. Inky will be able to Bodyguard - I will roll if necessary.

In dire straits, Nina and Inky employ their unique bond to teleport the gnomish knight out of the frying pan, and her mount into the fire!

Quiella manages to resist the kithangian's attacks, but not it's inexorable grip. She feels the abyssal venom still within her body. It takes 2 consecutive saves to beat. You'll need another DC22 Fort save on your turn.

The beast-demon facing Nina - or rather, now facing Inky - sneers with its two pincer-faces.

I'll deal with your winged pet later! its hateful voice speaks in Nina's mind as it sidesteps the eidolon and maintains its focus on the dismounted rider. But it first glances towards Pai and attempts to corrupt the mage...

DC16 Will save, Pai

if you fail:
It's another Quickened Unnatural Lust. If you fail you'll spend your turn attempting to throw yourself on Nina.

magenta claw1 vs Nina: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
magenta claw2 vs Nina: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (8) + 18 = 26damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
magenta sting1 vs Nina: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (18) + 18 = 36damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
magenta sting2 vs Nina: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (1) + 18 = 19damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Perhaps befuddled by Nina's gnomish trickery, the fiend fails to get a grasp on her again. But even with Inky defending her, one of the wicked tails pierces her armour, and its venomous barb pricks her.

Nina attempt a DC22 Fort save

if you fail:
You take STR damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4 and are Nauseated.

Round 4

Pai, -17hp, Will save

Will 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26

Pai flies 5’ to the east and pulls her persistent rod, casting phantasmal killer on the demon.

Ive never used persistent on phantasmal killer before so I’m not sure if both saves have to be made twice. But I’ll make a spell penetration roll so it might be moot.

Caster level check with SP and GSP 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 11 + 2 + 2 = 21

Feh.

The Waking Rune

For sure. Persistent means all saves have to be rolled twice. But it looks like Pai only has a Lesser Rod and Phantasmal Killer is a level 4 spell. In this case the consideration is moot though.

The demon glowers at Pai as she works her magic - and nothing happens. The fiend's twisted faces grin.

Meanwhile, the white demon grapples with Quiella...

maintain grapple: 1d20 + 24 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 24 + 5 = 43

...it wrenches Quiella from her saddle and walks off with her, stepping right on top of another blister-geyser. The geyser erupts.

gm screen:
energy: 1d5 ⇒ 3

electricity damage: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5) = 12 Thoriel, Quiella and Tùrin attempt a DC15 Reflex save for half damage.

The demon is unharmed by the explosion.

Quiella, you get a free attempt to escape the grapple - either Escape Artist or CMB - with a +4 bonus, though you'll still need to attempt the reflex save and you still get moved. Note that if you fail to escape then you're at a -4 DEX penalty, affecting your Reflex save.

tongue damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6

The white demon's rasping tongues continue to dig into Quiella. Quiella needs a DC20 Will Save to avoid CHA damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Thoriel gets an AoO when the demon moves.

Invisible. Cold Iron Scimitar +1.

The agile elf then tries to avoid the exploding geyser.

REFLEX: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24

Managing to avoid most of the shock, she reflects that this is how her opponents must feel when she strikes them with her electrified blade. Noticing that the demon doesn't seem to be affected by the electricity, she instead charges up her sword with dark energy and closes in to deliver another blow to the demon.

Use 1/day empowered magic ability and cast Vampiric Touch. Move and deliver via spellstrike.
Attack: 1d20 + 17 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 17 + 2 = 24 Damage: 1d6 + 10 + 7d6 ⇒ (2) + 10 + (6, 5, 3, 5, 5, 5, 3) = 44
Caster Level Check vs SR: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

The Waking Rune

Invisibility doesn't help Thoriel to pierce the demon's chitinous hide - though she remains unseen, the thick armour turns her blade. You're still holding your spell charge after two misses.

I know you're there somewhere, elf! I'll deal with you after I crush the life from this tiny tin warrior!

Possibly clutching (grappling?) at straws here, but did the demon's AC get affected at all by being grappled with Quiella?

The Waking Rune

The demon is taking the normal DEX penalty for being grappled, and also loses its DEX bonus against an Invisible opponent - but it has a high Natural armour bonus and Thoriel's attacks miss.

Quiella struggles valiantly, knowing the danger that the abyssal blisters present, but still in vain. Does not beat CMD.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
The Waking Rune

Overwhelmed by the physical power of the kithangians, it is all the pathfinders can do to beat a hasty retreat - Thoriel distracts the white demon just long enough to force it to drop Quiella, and all four of you flee for your lives...

When you eventually return to the Grand Lodge many weeks later and report for debriefing, Aram Zey merely shakes his head in silence.

But sometimes, getting home alive is all the victory that matters.
