The Damned Troop (Inactive)

Game Master BugbearDM

A group of damned souls are sent on a mission by the their devil master in exchange for a second chance at life.

In this world, there are people who would give up anything to achieve their goals, right down to their own life. Some will go one step further and give up their afterlife as well, selling their souls in exchange for a bit of earthly pleasure. But for all the riches, acclaim, and influence you can get up above, not one bit of it comes with you when you pass on. And for most who sell their souls, the only reward they end up with is an eternity of damnation.

But you, on the other hand, might just get a second chance. When the devil you made a pact with finds himself in a bind with no options left, he turns to the only warriors he has left: the damned souls in his possession. In return for your temporary servitude, he offers you a second chance at life on the material plane. Quite the tempting offer, but can you really trust the word of a devil? More importantly, do you even have a choice?

This is a Pathfinder First Edition game, running from levels 7-10 on the Fast Advancement track. Intended to be a combination of Suicide Squad and Dante’s Inferno, the game will focus more on combat and roleplay than it will puzzles or exploration. The game will mostly take place on the Paizo forums but Roll20 will be used as the virtual tabletop when necessary.

Other important details:

  • Players are expected to post at least once a week, and more often is preferred. If your absence is unavoidable, at least warn me in advance.
  • This goes without saying, but please don’t meta-game or god-mod.
  • Players can argue in-character as they please but no PVP; at the very least, please don’t actively try to kill other players.
  • This game is 18+, for obvious reasons. On that note: mild sexual themes are fine, extreme sexual themes are not.
  • Tone is mildly serious. I love jokes but players should generally understand when a scene is comedic and when it’s serious.
  • If you break the rules, I’ll politely warn you. If you keep breaking the rules I’ll pm you letting you know that you’ll be dropped if you continue this behavior. Break the rules after that and I'll drop you, no warning no appeal.
  • The setting will be generally based on Golarion but since I don’t have the setting guide on hand, you can expect a few artistic liberties. Same goes with the afterlife: this is MY version of Hell and the Abyss, not Paizo’s.
  • For characters whose strategies revolve around specific enemies: the adventure will take place almost entirely in the Abyss, and the majority of enemies will be demons or fiendish creatures.

If you want to apply, post with the following information; note that this isn’t supposed to be your character build, just a basic post detailing your character concept. Build rules will be discussed after the players are chosen.

Hi! It sounds very interesting, I will be glad to participate!

Name: Tariq Vestgeir
Alignment: NE
Basic Concept: Sorcerer with a Pestilence Bloodline. He died in Korvosa during the plague (his brother Aerik was my character in the Curse of the Crimson Throne).
Role: Arcane Caster
Why they sold their soul: He was trying to save his life from the plague. He lasted longer than others and was even able to absorb some of the power of the terrible magical plague that devoured the city, but died at the hands of the Gray Maidens. It seems that the devil knew something in advance that the plague would only be the beginning of problems.
How and when they died: The Gray Maidens were looking for vigilantes fighting against Queen Iliosa and came out on the trail of Tariq. He died in agony and under torture.
Their fatal flaw: Weakness of spirit, cowardice and betrayal of ideals. He was a priest of the Empyreal Lords like his younger brother, but where did his desire to survive at any cost lead him?

Okay, this sounds *very* interesting! I have several possible concepts in mind, so will need to settle on one.

Important question: How different is your Hell/Abyss going to be? Do the same Archdevils, Demon Lords, unique fiends, etc from Golarion's cosmology all still exist?

I think I condensed the 3 concepts I posted in the first 1 to actually one

Name: Rorek Thricedamned
Alignment: NE
Basic concept: Bloodrager/Insinuator
Rol: Frontline mellee DPR
Why they sold their soul (officially):
Did some Worldwound related research on who actually kills Demonlords (Nocticula does), tried to broker hiring Nocticulan Mercenaries to fight Baphomet and Deskari, which was way out of his league so he instead got abducted, ended up an arena slave in Alyushinnara, officially sold his soul to get out of the Abyss.

Why they sold their soul (unofficially): Came to the attention of Lady Vellexia of Alyushinnara, who did a special version of a profane gift (which persists through death but doesnt give any mechanical benefits on him, she can see everything he sees though and occassionally tunes in for amusement) on him. She then setup both the infernal contract and his death pretty soon afterwards. Rorek suspects some of this. Unknown to Rorek, Vellexia cares exceedingly little about a level 5-7 scrub, but sees him as something akin to a funny cat video channel that has no choice but to post solely for her.

How and when they died:
Assassinated by the same Succubus Hit Squad that abducted him in the first place. They made a bet amongst them of who would kill him in the most PG-13 way possible, as a lark/additional insult, so one of them bought a feather token tree and dropped a tree on him. She then swooped down and also yoinked his admittedly fabolous long blond hair, as he was dying from the tree damage. A Vavakia and a Balor also showed up, and had more fun at his expense offering to "help with moving the tree" and taking ones on the strength checks doing additional painful damage to him instead, for several hours until he was ded.

Fatal flaw:
Serious flaw: Extreme levels of Paranoia.
Less serious flaw: Highly susceptible to seduction. Vellexia psycho-magically engineers this weakness in all her slaves who survive the first week.

Mightypion, it' so cool! Your character and his story warms my heart )) The memories of how I GMed the 4th book of the Wrath of the Righteous, inserting it into the middle of the Second Darkness is something special. And your character with all these NPCs and descriptions just moved me there.

Name: Garidan Hemlock
Alignment: LN
Basic Concept: Asmodean Advocate Cleric from Mivon in the River Kingdoms, but originally with Varisian heritage.
He's an expert on international relations and trade law. He's not a fan of nobles' politics.
Role: Divine Caster
Why they sold their soul: Garidan was a traveling barrister, before he was hired by Mayor Raston Selline, the ruler of Mivon. His job was to translate the Mivon principle of solving every matter by means of sword duel into a working diplomatic strategy to resolve trade agreements with Mivon's neighbors. Garidan was intrigued by the task and did well for a while. However, some inner-political issues could only ever get solved by duel, no matter how much he argued. It was thus only a matter of time that he would find himself challenged and probably killed, because the pen is not mightier than the sword. So that night he prayed to Asmodeus for excellent skill in sword fighting in exchange for his soul.
How and when they died: He survived that duel easily, but the challenge was minor in comparison to some swordlords he might have to face. Thus he tried writing up laws that would give state officials like him immunity to duel challenges. The houses disagreed and sent an assassin.
Their fatal flaw: He's coward and a weasel that also has a superiority complex.

Generally speaking, yes. But any personal history or established kingdoms in the Outer Planes are up to interpretation.

Hello All!

This does seem interesting. I shall need to come up with something special to hang with Mightypion...lol. You and your extremely entertaining possessions!

My usual go-to is a full caster....but...i may attempt something that can also hang out in front for change....

Going back to H E double hockey sticks...suncreen and a wide brim hat comes to mind! And those fancy UV sunglasses that you seen late at night on infomercials...

I will read your Interest thread too because well you probably mentioned something telling....lol.

Thank you for running!

EDIT: I actually have a Ratfolk Gunslinger (Gulch Runner) 5/ Ranger (Trapper) 2 that I feel like would be a great addition to any party!

I shall write up his details and post profile here. Admittedly I do not know your build rules, but I will just be average build for now...hehe!

Character Post
Name: Jaidu
Alignment: N
Basic Concept: Gunslinger(gulch runner)5/Ranger(trapper)2
Role: (Combat, Skills, Arcane caster, etc.) Melee dpr/skills/trapper/wiseass
Why they sold their soul: lost a wager
How and when they died: tried to reclaim losses
Their fatal flaw: overconfident and a bit snarky

I will expand background.

Grand Lodge

Name: Portia Porphyria-Jeggare

Alignment: Lawful Evil (I can go into full description mode of what this means for me, and how I roleplay it -- including how I do NOT do PvP.)

Basic Concept: Ambitious minor noble (from Cheliax) in Korvosa; recent Academae graduate. Roleplay: All Bluff, Diplomacy, Knowledge Skills-Focused. Wants to become leader of The Darklight Sisterhood; she wants her House to thrive and become powerful.

Role: Bluff gambits, outside-the-box Diplomacy roleplay, heavy Knowledge Skills 'desire-to-learn-campaign-setting-detail-&-NPC-secrets/backgrounds' .... Wizard (Abjuration): spell artillery and battlemat control, no bolstering spells for PCs .... (100% willing to work with Tariq Vestgeir to make sure our spells aren't stepping on each other's toes.)

Why she sold her soul: Ambition, lust for power, hunger for knowledge. If you want to climb the feudal ladder in Cheliax, it's not a bad way to start. Portia Porphyria-Jeggare sought out a Devil with whom to negotiate her Soul.

How and when she died: She and her newlywed wife were in their new estate in Korvosa's South Shore when the tidal wave hit Korvosa. The manor fell into a sinkhole that an undiscovered Vampire had used as a lair. She and her Jeggare wife were killed.

Her fatal flaw: Ambition-blindness. She doesn't want to begin her existence in The Nine Hells yet; she has all her goals she's so passionate about achieving. She'll jump at any chance to get back to Korvosa. She'll jump at any chance to gain more secret knowledge.

WOTR:

Act 4 was funniest, because most of the things were social rather then combat heavy. It had a bunch of really interesting characters.
Vellexias audition was "The Abyss got talent" as a casting show were you were also expected to murder the competiting groups, and then got rated by a mythic Mafia-themed-Babau on how inventive your murder attempt was.

Hephzamirah tried to sue the heroes in Shamiras court, the Party CN character went full Tyrion Lannister in the vale of Eyrie on her, provoked her bodyguard into coming at the party, got a "minor boon" from Shamira as a reward for the entertainment provided, and asked her to "expertly grill the Minotaur Bodyguards" because he "was always an admirer of her unrivalled expertize the artistic side of the interaction between fire and flesh, and meant to prove that it can overcome how bad Minotaur tastes otherwise". The party then shared expertly roasted Minotaur Bodyguard with the demonic nobles present.
He then did some other things to make eating Minotaurs be "in" amongst Alysushinnaran nobility, which had some funny effects on the local Baphoment worshipping Minotaur population.

Well, some of my concepts require knowing a little about the build rules to work. Like the raging cannibal barbarian. If we are not changed to outsiders, then it means I lose one of the main reasons for the archetype.

I'll keep working on ideas that are less build-reliant.

Ooh, not long after I posted this, it came to me. Instead of being a villain coerced into evil, I'll play a hero forced to serve evil.

Name: Miriani
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Basic Concept: Inquisitor with Sanctified Slayer and/or Ravener Hunter
Role: Melee or ranged with divine support
Why they sold their soul: Miriani was tasked with infiltrating a new cult entering the area. She had thought it was a demon cult, but it was devil worshippers. Sadly, the first night she was brought to their headquarters was the night of the great ritual. They had summoned a devil and everybody was signing contracts. Between the devil and over a dozen armed cultists, she had to choose to sign or die. She signed, hoping that she could seek atonement and find a way to avoid this.
How and when they died: She was not entirely successful in hiding her loyalty. After she signed, the devil laughed at getting such a good prize. "I smell the blood of goodness on this one. She thought she could deceive us. She will be a prize in hell, and her suffering will be legendary."
Their fatal flaw: Overconfidence against tough odds.

Name: Thomas
Alignment: Neutral+
Basic Concept: Samsaran Cultivator trying to escape reincarnation by defying the heavens
Role: Some blend of combat/magic or skills/magic not hyper optimized into one niche, plus entirely too much remembered “soul magic” (to be determined later) for their own comfort.
Why they sold their soul: To gain the power to manipulate a soul, specifically theirs which was proving recalcitrant, so they could cease reincarnating on golarion and move beyond.
How and when they died: They thought they had figured out how to rend the cycle of souls, they were wrong, whoops.
Their fatal flaw: Nihilist Narcissism and Nascent Necromancy

Name: Briggi Plannten
Alignment: LE
Basic Concept: Dwarven slayer throat cutter
Role: Stealth, recon, terrorizing targets Predator style
Why they sold their soul: Being a low-class dwarf with a short temper didn't do Briggi any favors when trying to get himself a good job. Signing up for the military, he became a good scout and hunter. He eventually mustered out and hooked up with a lady who happened to have a violently jealous husband who killed her. Swearing revenge, Briggi prayed to unleash painful revenge on the man.
How and when they died: Being successful with his revenge, Briggi had left such a bloody path that it wasn't long before he was caught and hung.
Their fatal flaw: Rage and vengeance. He is usually at a low simmer most of the time but getting set off will have him go haring off to plot against the one who wronged him.
(Basing this character off of the MC of the comic Big Man Plans.

Name: Nigel, Lord Mutherington the Flagellator

Alignment: Chaotic Evil, which in Lord Mutherington's case means a total disregard for law and order, except for orders he gives and rules he just made up. He rather enjoys being part of a band of villains, though, and understands the value of teamwork.

Basic Concept: Bard, possibly with a cavalier or swashbuckler dip. I appreciate not having to hash out a full 7th level character sheet before knowing whether I'm playing, by the way. Thanks.

Role: Buffs for all, ranged attacks, teambuilding, instigating.

Why he sold his soul: Having angered the demon lord Socothbenoth--who knew the high priestess of a demon cult would raise such a fuss over embezzlement, or that a demon lord would care so much about one granddaughter's murder when he undoubtedly had thousands?--Lord Mutherington realized just how awful eternity in the Abyss was going to be for him. Changing his ways at his age was clearly not an option, so he arranged to trade his soul and a lifetime of service in exchange for a guaranteed afterlife of wealth, health, youth, and rank. The really brilliant part of his plan was that he sold his soul to a devil, so there was no chance whatsoever that he would end up facing Socothbenoth's wrath in the Abyss! Genius, pure genius!

How and when he died: Shortly after making the pact, Lord Mutherington threw himself off a tower, so his "lifetime of service" was in fact only a few hours. Ha! Ha! A foolproof plan!

His fatal flaw: Lord Mutherington is simply never satisfied. More than once he's turned victory into disaster by reaching for a little more than he can grasp.

Loving all these posts so far! You all chose some pretty interesting concepts for your characters. I'm thinking I'll keep recruitment open until Saturday night, then get an answer as to who is in the party by Sunday.

Grand Lodge

Huzzah!

I can definitely see some interesting combinations forming. Lots of great parties here.

Alright! I haven't seen anymore applications, so I think it's safe to say that recruitment is closed! Give me a few hours to pick the players, and we can get to work on character creation. Can't wait to play with you!

Before I begin I want to make note: all of you came up with some very interesting character concepts, and it was very difficult to cut down the number of players to a reasonable number. You're all very creative and any DM would be lucky to have you. That in mind:

  • Mightypion
  • Ellioti
  • W E Ray
  • Philo Pharynx
  • ‘Eκάτη
  • And Phillip Gastone

Welcome to the campaign! Feel free to post your confirmation in the discussion thread https://paizo.com/campaigns/v5748p75ivmep/discussion#1]HERE[/url].

Good luck to those who made it, should be a fun campaign!

Have fun!

The ratfolk looks up from his cards. His beady red eyes targeting a group of adventurers being called to some destination.
