Merisiel cleans off her rapier carefully, in case Spidey was poisonous. She asks, "Shall we look around? Maybe burn off some of these webs before we leave?" She searches the spider's body and the little NE alcove where it came from.

”That's it? I have not even moved my longsword.” Valeros complains but is happy that the spider is dealt with easily. ”Maybe we could check if the poor spider has mini-spiders with it. We'll never know if we don't check.” Valeros begins to scan the area for the unusual presence of whatever lurking in the area.

You find a small bundle in the corner. Inside the bundle is a small reptilian creature. You also find a fine-looking shortsword with a gem in the pommel, as well as a healing potion.
A small reptilian creature? As in a treasure, not something alive, right?
Merisiel points out the goodies in the corner. "What do we have here?" She grasps the shortsword to see if it feels better than her existing shortsword. "Ezren or Kyra -- can you check if either this sword or this reptilian bauble are magic?" She hands over the items.
With Merisiel having the fewest hp (even fewer than Ezren?!?)...
Eyeing the healing potion, Merisiel asks, "Since I'm often in melee, okay if I hold onto this potion for now?" If there are no objections, she places the potion on her bandolier.
If the shortsword radiates as magic, she also asks, "Can anyone else use this in battle?" If the group is okay with it, she stows her old shortsword and uses the new one, alongside her rapier.
Merisiel then moves up next to Valeros with weapons drawn, stays in the shadows, checking for traps along the way.

Correct. It's not alive. The only magic that Ezren can detect is the potion.

Valeros 20220306 |

”Can I take that shortsword? Hehe” Valeros asks, looking with some interest into the gem embedded on it.

![]() |

I'm sure you can work out the ownership of the shortsword... :)
After the web-infested cave, the passageway leading deeper underneath the streets of Otari appears to be mostly natural, but someone, or something, has worked to open the cavern and level out the floor, making the passage easily traveled. A crude barricade made from old wooden planks and part of a barrel blocks the entrance to a side tunnel, while the main passage continues off into the gloom.
You hear a faint clattering noise coming from somewhere beyond the barricade. From what light you have, you can see that the tunnel opens up into a larger room ahead, with a large rectangular object in the middle.
You can roll the check openly

Merisiel Silvari |

Merisiel reluctantly hands the shortsword to Valeros. But the rogue deftly pops the gem out before handing it over. She feels it safest with her.
Merisiel stops at the barricade. She grins, "And I thought we were the first people down here. Let me have a listen." She puts her elven ear right up to the planks.

Valeros tries kicking the barricade, but either the thing is made of sterner stuff or he just didn't eat enough breakfast that morning and his foot just bounces off (while making a lot of noise). Ezren tries to dismantle it but can't seem to figure out how to start.
You could also bash it with your weapons. If you decide to go that route, I can just hand wave the attack rolls since it's just standing there :)

Beyond the barricade, an old cavern corridor winds down into the earth, ending in an ancient burial vault lit by a strange torch with a blue flame. Alcoves line the walls, each one containing a rotten wooden coffin, while the center of the room has a raised platform holding a stone sarcophagus.
