You head to the town hall at the center of Port Valen, seeking a meeting with the mayor. There you encounter a terrible foe: a bureaucratic assistant. However, once you explain that you are envoys from the recently arrived Pathfinder expedition, the assistant changes his tune. "Please wait just a moment and let me check to see if Mayor Bloodfang has time today."

Just as the assistant stands up, an exhausted and beleaguered looking Valenborn man in his middle age walks out from the door behind the assistant. "Oh! Mayor Bloodfang!" the assistant says. "Let me introduce you to the envoys from the Pathfinder expedition. They would like to speak with you about a request."

The mayor looks relieved to be interrupted from whatever he was dealing with, "Welcome to Port Valen. I am Sonidaga Bloodfang. How can I help you?"

"We are pathfinders, we look for a place to build our lodge here. We have spoken with Svein and saved his scout, for which he promised to offer his feast hall for that purpose."

"Burial at sea" typically means sailing out onto the sea and dropping them, not just tossing them off the shore or docks and would require more time than you have, but consider them dealt with by the end of the scenario.

"Hey! You can't dump bodies this close to the shore!" a fisherman complains at Teja.

Azu:
You're certain that the mayor has been up to paperwork.

In the town hall, the mayor nods slowly. "He hasn't said anything to me, but I'm sure he will if he gave you his word," Mayor Bloodfang says. "But I'll have to think about it. The feast hall does belong to the town. However, there is a plot of land that I'd be glad to give to the Pathfinder Society if you can help me with the mess it's currently tangled in. A mess that's giving me a headache every morning." He mugs a lopsided, rueful smile. "If you help me settle this land dispute, I'll gift you the land. We can draw up the retainer and contract right now, if you agree."

Teja sighs. Things are never as simple as they could be.

"I have some experience in negotiations." she admits.
"Some libraries are reluctant to let just anyone see their texts."

"Excellent!" Mayor Bloodfang says, looking clearly relieved. "Draw up the contracts while I explain the situation to the Pathfinders," he tells his assistant. The assistant dutifully retrieves a bottle of ink and a stack of blank parchment and begins writing out the contract.

"I'm trying to resolve a property dispute between two families--the Molwans and the Yrmingars. They're distantly related and can trace their ancestry back to the earliest unions between the Ulfen explorers and the Mahwek people. The dispute involves a track of land between the two that has traditionally been used by both as a path to bring their carts to town and as a source of water and salmon. Recent activities by both families--the Ymingars' farming and the Molwans' ranching--have let do runoff into the river. Each family blames the other for the dirtying of the water and decline in the salmon.

"I've proposed the town purchase the land and appoint a steward. The steward will maintain the track's natural resources, including protecting the water and fishing rights of both families. The agreement will include permission to build a living facility for the steward. Or stewards. I've drafted the proposal, and I need you to split up and get each of the families to agree to it before the Ymingars patriarch marches off for Valenhall with Sveinn Blood-Eagle.

"Balasz is their patriarch. He is proud and stern. He responds poorly to threats but is amenable to flattery. He respects anyone who can prove their knowledge and respect for the land and enjoys conversing with other farmers. Deishu Molwan is their matriarch. She is a renowned breeder of the long‑haired horses common in this part of Arcadia. She has a sense of humor but looks poorly on attempts to win her over through flattery. She respects strong people who aren’t afraid to make their will and thoughts known, as well as anyone who shows a strong affinity for horses and the equestrian arts."

I recommend a team of 2 and a team of 3. The smaller team should have Teja in it.

Teja listens with care to the mayor.

"Are you suggesting that the pathfinder society acts as steward of the land?" she asks "And we build the lodge there? Or that we take over the feasting hall?"

Then she adds "And, if not the society, do you have a suggestion for someone who would be acceptable to both families to act as steward?]"

Thinking about the personalities she sighs. "I suspect I will be better dealing with Balasz."

| Extinction | url= |

"Yes. That is the most elegant solution to my problems," the mayor says. "Once you see the land, I'm sure you'll agree that it a better choice than the feast hall. The Pathfinder Society will have privacy and plenty of land in exchange for maintaining the natural resources there. It will be a bit of a walk to town and the docks, but that is a small inconvenience. However, if you decide you would rather have the feast hall--and you do have Sveinn's recommendation--then I'll find someone else appropriate to serve as steward."

"That's okay. Why don't you take on Balasz then, and I'll talk with Deishu. Shall I take Azu with me then?"

She sighs. "I suspect they both really want the same thing, the others not to have access. Even through they are related, old feuds run deep. So the Society acting an impartial steward is likely our best bet if they can't suggest anyone else neutral."

You begin hiking toward the two properties, diverging as you reach the contested land. It is a potentially bountiful area with fertile grasslands and a placid river flowing down the center.

What follows is a chance for role-play with the NPCs. After that, I'll tell you what your skill options are and call for rolls.

Molwan Ranch (Elexia, Rangi, Scratch)

The Molwan ranch features a stable, a covered hall for eating, and a handful of single-family houses and tents staked out near a fenced-in grazing area. Large horses with thick manes, hair-covered fetlocks, and unusually shaggy hair covering the rest of their bodies, prance about the grazing area. The horses are clearly bred for heartiness, strength, and endurance, rather than speed. Mahwek and Valenborn grooms care for the horses and move about the property with the assured, quick steps of people who know what they’re doing and will get it done quickly so they can move on to the next task.

An older woman rides from the grazing area to greet you, her dark hair pulled back in a gray-flecked braid and her skin weathered by sun and the elements. Combined with her razor-sharp cheekbones and bright eyes, the woman’s age could be a hard-won forty to a youthful sixty.

"What's your business here?" she asks, and then turns her horse and begins to walk away. "You'll need to walk and talk, so keep up. Work on my ranch never stops."

Ymingars (Azu, Teja)

The Yrmingar Farm is a series of small plots of land, each plot dedicated to growing maize, potatoes, wheat, or squash, and two plots left fallow. Ulfen and Valenborn toil in the fields collecting a harvest. As you approach, a large Valenborn man sets aside an oversized scythe and waves to you as he walks over. As he draws closer, you can see that he wears a bearskin cloak with a clean tunic underneath, though his hands and pants are textured with layers of soil and loam. He thrusts out one of his large, dirt-stained hands. "I'm Balasz Ymingars. What brings you to our farm?"

As Teja begins to explain why they have come to the ranch, Deishu to shout at a pair of farmhands strolling down a path at a leisurely pace, "Hey! Wabash! Thror! Put some pep in your pace or you'll be eating a cold dinner by the time you finish with your work!" She glances back at Teja, [b]"You were saying?"

While Teja continues to explain your intentions, Deishu turns off the path and rides to a horse struggling some with the birth of her foal. She dismounts to assist with the birth. Teja and Azu assist her proficiently. "Thanks for the hands," she says, wiping her hands on her saddle blanket before continuing on to the house. There she rinses her hands in a cold water trough. "The Ymingars' farming practices have become sloppy over the years," she explains to Teja and Azu. "Their soil is eroding downhill during the rains and dirties the water, which makes it bad for drinking--man or horse--and is killing off the salmon, so there's not as much fish to go around. That's what the problem is. We asked the Mayor to deal with them since they won't listen to us."

Checks made and succeeded. She'll sign the papers if you ask her to.

The patriarch introduces you to many farm workers along the way, referring to them as his sons and daughters. Once he has finished, he heads to the main house. "Alright, let me see that contract." He nods as he reads it through. "You folk seem knowledgeable enough about the land to serve as stewards. I'm convinced." Balasz signs the settlement contract.

Each group having obtained their respective signatures, you return to meet at your prearranged meeting place and learn of each other's success. You can also share that neither family is doing anything wrong in particular, but they both have expanded quite far and the inevitable consequences of progress are taking their tole on the lands between. A neutral steward certain could help both family's and the natural resources shared between them.

You return to Port Valen where Mayor Bloodfang looks extremely relieved to hear of your success. "Finally! I can give those troubles over to someon--Er. I mean, great work! That is a big help to me and my nights will surely be more restful." He glances pointedly at his assistant, who scurries off to retrieve a chest. You spend the night where and as lively as you choose. Wherever your head found rest, you are rudely and suddenly awakened by the clanging of bells, men and women shouting in alarm, and the clatter of spears being collected from weapon racks. While you hurry to dress and arm yourselves, you hear terrible roars and bellows. Emerging onto the street, the broken body of a Ulfen warrior crashes down beside you. Turning in that direction, you see three frost giants at the edge of town. Sveinn Blood-eagle's men are dealing with these. Other warriors are battling monsters around Port Valen.

Two small, blue-skinned giants accompanied by four wart-covered, hairless, green-skinned hounds break through the lines and eye you hungrily. "Raagh!" One of the giants charges forward and then tosses a hatchet at Teja. She leaps out of the way just in time as the whirling weapon passes uncomfortably close to her head before it sinks into the wall behind you all.

Yes. You have your weapons out.

Wiping the sleep from his eyes and the dried something from his beard he looks out the high window "Grab all the gunpowder ya can, we got some blastin' to do!"

Scratch moves quickly to the cover of the blue spruce tree, leans the barrel of his long rifle against the rough bark, and pulls the trigger.

Scratch blows a hole big enough to pass a keg through in the giant's side. The giant does not seem to mind. In fact, the bleeding stops almost immediately, and the ruined lung regrows into a smaller bud of a lung, inflating and deflating with each rapid breath.

The other giant sees someone else it wants to rip apart and runs off that way (apologies, I misread the encounter numbers, only one giant).

For a moment she considers what she knows about giants, letting her allies know some words of wisdom.

Then, having little desire to go toe-to-toe with a giant, slips behind a tree and hides, waiting for a better opportunity to aid in the battle.
