Chaance keeps her position at the back, waiting to see what happens beyond the second airlock door, while observing Breezer on the other side of the first airlock door.

"Give us a moment, sylph. The creature appears to be alone, and it's not very big. I've never seen one in person."

Rhoreen well jinx the aurumvorax with the power of her wand.

Despite the considerable amount of legs and arms, Zzvkgrogk manages to shot a couple of lasers at the creature that impact accurately. The fire of the laser pistol is resisted by the golden fur though.

Rūha distracts the beast with a punch, just before jumping over its loin with heroic gymnastics, landing at the back of the creature!

Yambul slides easily in front of the door (5’ step). He studies it swiftly before taking a few chops through the door with his chainsaw. Not sure if there’s cover from the doorway. If there is, please apply as I did not.

Yambul saws through the aurumvorax golden neck, sprawling blood everywhere, but the thing refuses to fall, even when he cuts again on his side.

Chaance continues to hold her position, unable to slip through the crowd to assist on euthanizing the abandoned aurumvorax so they may proceed less threatened through the tower. She raises a single finger towards Breezer, silently indicating the need to wait a little longer.

Sadly, Yambul must draw and swing his chef’s knife, which is very nice, but nothing like his chainsaw (and is, so far, non magical).

Rhoreen and Chaance hold their position.

Rūha hits the Aurumvorax on the back, but the golden fur absorbs all of the momentum of the strike. DR

Discarding his laser pistol, Zzvkgrogk tries chance with his arc rifle. Drawing it and taking aim, he has time for a single shot, but it lands, and this time the ionizing electricity goes for the full effect.

The Aurumvorax staggers, clearly on the process of dying, but ferociously rejects to fall unconscious and keeps fighting.

It is for nothing, as Yambul stabs his chef's knife in between the golden fur, reaching its heart to end the beast's life.

Finally releasing the Kellid, the aurumvurax falls to the ground dead.

The aurumvorax has eaten and digested anything that could have been of value here. His fur though, can do for a beautiful masterwork hide armor or cold weather outfit under the hands of a skilled crafter.

Yambul, blade already out, will carve off the skin in case anyone wants to use it later.

It takes some time, but the cook does a professional work of butchering, removing the fur, and even cleaning the good pieces for a few good meals of meat.

Placing the northern stairs behind the door as likely running down a floor, Chaance elects to take to the southern stairs, which should lead them to the next floor up.

I think we're probably going to come back for Yambul's skinning as some of us have timers on our protections.

Rhoreen moves into the room to examine the carnage while she waits for Yambul to heal up so that they can press on.

"Strange that the achaierai and the aurumvoxax didn't meet and kill each other," she notes offhandedly. "And I wonder what we'll see next, Ankhegs? Antlions? Athach? Akaruzugs? Might be the next floor will be littered with Basilisks, Bandersnatches, and Baykoks."

When Yambul is healed, she will follow others up the stairs.

Requested by Rhoreen, the group leaves the aurumvorax pelting for later, but when he does, Yambul does a good job out of it.

Chaance leads the party up the stairs to the fifth floor, until you reach a door, apparently also burrowed by the aurumvorax. It opens into another hall.

F22. Fifth-Floor Atrium
This wide, curved hall ends in a metal hatch to the northwest. A large slate board covered with neat lettering hangs on the east wall. A flight of stairs to the east leads up, while another flight to the south leads down. The door to the southern stairwell appears to have been burrowed or chewed through.

Breezer points to the slate board "It is Furkas’s overall project roster and laboratory assignment chart, although the wizard hasn’t updated this board since he left us to go north"

"Well, at least he was an organized a!$*##& wizard," Rhoreen notes the notations while wondering why the ghost hasn't returned for a spell or two. "Looks like we'll have a lot of exploring to figure out what Xoud actually cared about if we're going to end his presence here in the tower. Seems like either Lab 6 or Lab Zero might hold our main target."

As there is only one door forward, she will wait patiently.

”You lot did a whole bunch of work here Breezer. What were you trying to accomplish?” Not for the first time, he wonders about their temporary companion.

Chaance gains the landing, then takes to the unopened door, and gives it a try. "Four floors cleared. Furkas responded to the schematics, at least. We should hit a nerve if we find his sleeping quarters, or another library. He was a wizard, as you say. Spellbooks, laboratories... did it say 'mnemo'...?" The android pauses, then focuses back on opening the door.

"Oh, accomplish, yes, we were trying to find about gasses and swarms. Xoud was a master on the topic." Breezer succinctly explains, and as far as it goes Yambul feels that's true "Sleeping quarters, well yes, Xoud's sleeping quarters are just past that door"

When Chaance tries the door but the wheel does not turn, Sebastian adds "I already tried that once. But it is sealed"

You are in front of an arcane lock. A dispel magic could remove this altogether, if beating Xoud's magic power, but a knock spell will automatically suppress it.

"Xoud's sleeping quarters? It seems all but guaranteed that he'll want to keep us out of those. Unless..." Ruha turns to Breezer "Did he use his sleeping quarters much, or was he one of those academic types who end up sleeping in the lab?"

When the door doesn't open, she shrugs "I'm not particularly eager to clash with him again in our current state. Maybe it's better we continue upwards for now and come back here later."

"Ah! Of course! It's been magically locked! In there is what must be keeping Xoud tied to this world, maybe even his corpse. We'll want to get in there...if we can find a solution. I have one or two, but they are risky and certainly we search further and see if another solution opens up to us," Rhoreen explains about the arcana lock.

Rhoreen will examine the door and jam and area to see if there is a gaseous potion sized gap where the party might air through and past the door.

He observes Rhoreen checking the gaps in the door with curiosity.

”Stand back, Calliope – let’s just see if this does anything.”

If not stopped, and he does wait a bit as he’s in no rush, Yambul will try his chainsaw on the door to see which metal is stronger. He’s very careful not to damage his weapon, checking very carefully with a light touch - before committing to a heavier blow.

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

Zzvkgrogk's shots are reflected by the glaucite door bouncing dangerously around without apparently harming it at all.

Yambul makes the chainsaw roar in front of the unforgiving obstacle, but the ratfolk decides to give a try to force open it.

Chaance starts walking upstairs, and overhears the sound of ringing hammers and operating forges before she decides to walk back to the fifth floor.

While the others wait patiently, Zzvkgrogk gets to circumvent the magical seal by dismantling the wheel. His operations take a bit, but he manages to unhinging it and from there, he can manipulate the inner gears, that seem to respond to movement. Slowly rotating the gears, he manages to open the door without using the magically stuck wheel.

F23. Master Bedroom
This large chamber appears to be a combination of bedroom and study. A large window to the northwest, fitted with sturdy metal slats, lets in light and air, while elaborate tapestries depicting gloomy landscapes and gothic architecture adorn the walls. A large bed sits in the room, its fine coverings a bit dusty. A small desk against the southwest wall is bare, while doors provide several exits—although no handle adorns the door to the northwest. Instead of a handle or knob, it bears a small plate of coppery metal.

The tapestries depict scenes from eastern Ustalav, the city of Caliphas.

K. local DC 15:

The tapestries must be Furka's hometown from childhood. By sure he must be deeply tied to that place if he placed this on his own bedroom.

The fine tapestries and bedclothes are well worth 600 gp and weight 50 pounds in all.

When Zzvkgrogk finds the switch, he makes ready for battle.

Can you buy an oil or potion of knock? Seems like something Yambul might pick up if it's possible.

Chaance turns her attention towards Zzvkgrogk. "A busy depiction creates confusion in the visual sense. When there is so much to see, the little things evade your full attention. Well, not your attention." The android watches the ysoki's hand reach for a switch she failed to detect herself.

"Careful, Zzvkgrogk. Do you have an idea of what the switch will accomplish? Remember the risk Rhoreen took in the library downstairs."

Once the others point out the switch, Rūha comments "Hiding a switch behind a tapestry of a graveyard? Oddly macabre decorations..." She stays near the center of the room when Zzvk goes for the switch, ready to respond if something or someone starts moving. Her mind goes for a moment to hidden studies and sliding bookcases like in old fashioned stories, but then she realizes that Xoud would have no reason to hide such a thing in his own locked bedroom. Unless he regularly entertained visitors here for some reason.

She has her EMP pistol and autograpnel out and keeps her eyes peeled for any unwelcome ghosts.

Rhoreen stumbles back, badly scorched, looking for healing.

Chaance steps forward to avoid soft cover and puts two arrows through the ghost, for some half-damage, her questions floating in the air unanswered.

Rūha quickly reorients herself, trying to give proper advice to the group.

Zzvkgrogk overloads the arc pistol, and there is a grand strike of electricity going through the ghost. Due to its incorporeal nature though, the ghost is not damaged by the non-magical weapon.

"The android..." Furkas turns towards Chaance "You! This is all your f$&~ing fault Casandalee! If you had not escaped nothing of this would have happened! No parasites, the tower would be still mine!"

The spellbooks contain a trove of spell knowledge. One of the tomes is more wore down and has clearly received more recent study, while the other one is in more pristine state.

Wow, that’s some magic!

”Wow, what a trove. What an absolute trove of magical and technical knowledge,” Rhoreen can’t keep the admiration out of her voice. No matter what she thinks of Xoud the person, the spellbooks present an astounding amount of lore.

Unless others wish them, she will stow the books for later study, such as when Yambul is skinning the dead for their precious leathers.

Rhoreen waits to see if the ghost will return, and then be ready to move on to find what else might bind the spirit to this tower.

"Ah, of course. Your psychopathic nature won't allow you to take responsibility for your own actions. It is why you stand on the other side of the Veil."

As an alien blooded character, Rūha treats radiation as two steps less severe, bringing this radiation down to 'low' for 1 con drain if she fails her save.

Rūha shields herself with the massive bulk of the autograpnel as a pulse of what feels like heat washes over her. Radiation. An ever-present danger, but not one she'd expected to experience here. When the wave passes, she raises the cannon up to fire, only to find Xoud slipping away.

"No parasites? Us, or something completely different?" She mulls over his parting words as she steps up to look at the books. Turning out to be spellbooks, she furrows her brow. "As a ghost, perhaps he has a ghostly set of spellbooks in addition to these? Presumably he must, if he means to prepare his spells while suffering from his newfound lack of physicality. Or maybe the transformation into ghost freed him from that need."
