Miloban decides to try being nice first, and puts on a smile.
"You poor fellow, what a compromising position to find yourself in, bent over, half buried in a pot of dirt. It's a good thing we found you when we did. Now, tell us what all this fuss is about. Surely we can help dig you out, further, metaphorically I mean."

The magistrate coughs a bit more. "Sorry about all of that. Seems the Gardeners were onto me. I am the senior Magistrate and contrary to most people’s assumptions, I am not a Gray Gardener. I do everything I can in my courtroom to subtly foil them and it seems I may have went too far. My bodyguards were detained and executed by the Grey Gardeners recently, without so much as a lawful trial. I had to come here as I am up for reelection, but I see now that the Grey Gardeners just wanted to get me all alone." He coughs up a bit more dirt, wiping his mouth.
Otvald pulls the platinum chain from his neck and hands it to you. "Please take this for saving my life. It is worth a fortune." Platinum Necklace worth 2400 GP. Now go, you should get out of here before we are discovered. Don't worry about me I will make my way out quickly."[/b] He grabs some of the cleaner drapes and wraps them around him as Otvald redons his mask. "This should buy me enough time to make my way home."
| Martius Pulcher |
Martius comes out of his self-imposed daze, "Actually, hang on a minute. Please excuse my friends. The violence that we've met with has us on edge, and we do not mean to be curt or gruff. Again, I ask are you alright, and might you have insight into the underbelly of what's going on here?"

Shard and Martius get the feeling that the Magistrate is being completely truthful. He seems to have been blocking each insidious act from the shadows of the court of law as much as possible.

You all make your way back out t the dance floor, first making sure that the route is clear for the Magistrate's escape.
At 11 p.m., Director General Yasmeena Pont clears the dance floor near the musicians. She directs servants to set up posts with red streamers that mark out a large area of the ballroom floor. She then holds up her hand for quiet before beginning a strange performance. This gives the magistrate the distraction needed to slowly move through the thick crowd unseen.
Once the last waist-high pole has been placed to mark out an empty area on the ballroom floor, the gaunt, redheaded host signals for quiet. She’s now wearing a mask with a simple frown, rather than a smile. “The Gray Gardeners have been part of Galt’s history from the beginning, and shall be there to cultivate its end. Let us entertain you with the Pageant of Galtan History.”
The woman makes a grand motion, and dozens of featureless clay automatons march onto the stage.
The woman recites, “Lo, ’tis a gala night, in the lonesome latter years!” and the automatons mimic the motions of farmers, tailors, soldiers, prisoners, and more.
Lo! ’t is a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.
Mimes, in the form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly—
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their Condor wings
Invisible Wo!
That motley drama—oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased for evermore
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,
And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
And Horror the soul of the plot.
But see, amid the mimic rout,
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes!—it writhes!—with mortal pangs
The mimes become its food,
And seraphs sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.
Out—out are the lights—out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
While the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, “Man,”
And its hero, the Conqueror Worm.
The automatons mimic everyday tasks the people of Galt might engage in before running in circles, one at a time, and then together. The worm of the poem doesn’t make an appearance in the pageant, but the automatons all act as though it does, writhing as though being eaten and falling down dead.
It’s clear that the partygoers are confused by the pageant and its poem, but they give polite applause at energetic parts and gasp when the automatons mimic being eaten alive. After the pageant, the automatons march out of the ballroom, taking the streamer-bedecked poles with them, and the masque resumes.
Occultism, Society or a relevant Lore such as Theater or Bardic Lore may help you understand portions of this performance.

"We should each take an executioner's hood, just in case. If there is nothing left to explore I suggest we get back to the party, unless anyone needs healing first."
| Shard of the Silent House |
Shard hangs under the balcony in the shadows. He shivers at the blasphemous verse: that the gods serve vast entities who feed on the dead, and that the only hero of humankind is this conquering worm. He spreads his black wings, studded with diamonds that glitter like the eternal stars in the night, and drifts down to the dance floor.

“At bidding of vast, formless things / That shift the scenery to and fro.”
The automatons mimic moving around something large and heavy. Shard realizes that this line means that the most significant moveable furnishing in the room, Silent Lenore, will play an important role in the Midnight Unmasking.
“With its phantom chased forevermore / By a crowd that seize it not.”
The automatons whirl and dance closely, as though moving through each other. Martius realizes that some form of spirit or spectral creature will be a part of the Midnight Unmasking.
“The curtain, a funeral pall / Comes down with the rush of a storm.”
In unison, the automatons mimic fainting, falling, and lying still. Amour realizes that the masque is building to an event involving a powerful undead creature.
"It is nearly time for the unmasking!" Someone in the crowd calls out in excitement. When the great clock approaches midnight, the excited party goers begin to count down the seconds. Everyone reaches up to take hold of their masks in the final seconds, ready to unmask and look around the room.

A cheer erupts from the crowd as the great black clock strikes midnight. Nearly everyone in the crowd yanks off their masks at once, throwing them to the floor or into the air and looking around the room with naked curiosity. Several people— perhaps a dozen—lower their hands without removing their masks. The two hosts cry out in unison, “Now you see who among us are the Gray Gardeners—and who are the dead!” The final blade shudders, and a cluster of spectral forms rush from it, shrieking in a soul-curdling rage and coalescing into a massive ghostly form.
Ten Gray Gardener assassins and the two director generals (Yasmeena and Vallian) haven’t removed their masks. They quickly move to block the doors as the massive mass of spirits begins to viciously slaughter the guests. It saps through a young man's body splitting him apart as another is pulled to the ceiling and dragged across the beams until only a bloody streak remains.
The crowd of hundreds begins to go into a full-blown panic, running in all directions at once as the party-goers have nowhere to escape. Due to the chaotic crowd and bodies covering the floor the entire grand ballroom is difficult terrain.
