Disguised as an adventurers’ boarding house, Tymon’s low-profile Pathfinder lodge rests directly above Smine’s Weaponworks, the city’s eminent smithy. The smell of burning coal and laborers’ sweat permeates the building, though a bowl of cloves and aromatic bark makes an earnest attempt to downplay the industrial ambiance. The door opens, letting in the echoes of hammers on metal while also revealing a soot-stained dwarf dressed in blacksmith’s garb: Venture-Captain Holgarin Smine. In one hand, he effortlessly carries a large basket, while the other holds a magnificent double-headed axe of lustrous adamantine. He sets both on the table before removing a cloth-wrapped bundle and a selection of bread, cheese, and cider from the basket.

“All right, Pathfinders. Got a task for you—dangerous lands, dangerous task.” He speaks in his infamously staccato manner. “You come well recommended,” he adds with an approving nod. “I know you’re up to it.”

The dwarf unwraps the bundle, revealing a sheaf of twine-wrapped notes. “Ever heard of Gojan the Sharp? Early Pathfinder, renowned explorer, he wandered Numeria for a decade. Found all sorts of strange places outside Silver Mount he couldn’t explore in one lifetime; one of ‘em was Sulfur Gulch. Society’s known about lots of these places, but not that one. Long time ago, the gnome Eylysia hid away the findings.” Smine exaggerates a scowl, adding, “Not good Pathfinding policy, that. Always report. You know that already.” Patting the stack of notes, he continues. “Some others found the notes, so it’s good as new to us; you’d be the first to explore it. Trouble is that it’s Kellid territory—Ghost Wolves’ land. Lots of Kellids hate Numerian technology, but Ghost Wolves? They really hate it. The good news is Gojan did the Ghost Wolves a big favor and never collected. They owe us one, and that favor’s going to be not killing Pathfinders when they explore Sulfur Gulch.” Smine picks up the axe reverently. “We’ve set up a meeting with Xol-Nomag, the current chieftain. Bring this as a gift. Get safe passage. Don’t get killed by Kellids. Then go to Sulfur Gulch, and find out what it’s about—what was it for, who lived there, how it all worked. If you smuggle anything out, be real careful. Wearing fur doesn’t make Ghost Wolves stupid. They have magic and wits to spare. And try to make a good impression. We might need them on our side someday. Or at least not killing us on sight.”

The dwarf rubs his calloused hands together. “That’s it. Any questions?”

Rhiannon smiles gently at the dwarf. "Don't worry, I always try to make a good impression. And if that doesn't work... we'll try to find another way, other than bared steel. What can you tell us about the Ghost Wolves and this Xol-Nomag in particular? The ways of diplomacy can vary greatly between cultures, as I've come to learn. And how did Sulfur Gulch get its name anyway? Is it a ruin? Or a volcanic crater?"

Yeah, I got nuthin'... :) Would like to learn anything more about the above, though.

A small gnome with wild, stark-white hair and a very youthful face enters the smithy and listens intently at the briefing.

Very interesting. Are you able to tell us what the favor was that Gojan did? Would the current Ghost Wolves tribe even remember it or recognize it?

He holds a very stoic expression as he speaks, his face never holding any emotion that would match the words. Some find it unnerving.

Fahd recalls that most of Numeria’s population is Kellid. While many settled down in the region’s few cities, numerous tribes still wander the wilds. Their long history of clashing with neighbors for the land’s scarce resources gives these tribes a reputation for savagery, though many Kellids prove quite warm and hospitable under peaceful circumstances.

Sorry, nothing at DC 10.

“Not much else to tell. They loathe technology. So if you’ve got any, don’t flaunt it. You can still bring what you have, though. They take these debts seriously, and they won’t attack—unless provoked."

“We don't know much, which is why we’re exploring it. Place gives off smoke, I hear. Nasty stuff, and poisonous too. No signs of tech near the surface. If there were, the Ghost Wolves would’ve smashed it."

Arin Qualnoh wrote:

"All we have is this note from Gojan the Sharp’s journals, as annotated by Eylysia.

Transcription of handout:
Searching the area around Sulfur Gulch, I discovered a small tunnel nearby. After widening it with a magic wand, I was able to venture inside the ruin hidden below. The site was surprisingly functional; the walls shook, the air hissed. Indeed, as I entered, the air grew thick with poison mists, as though Sulfur Gulch itself resented my entry. Drawing forth an enchanted gem, I summoned an air spirit to clear the poison forthwith. This, however, had unanticipated results.

As the elemental whirlwind blew back the poison air, I heard the ruin itself gasp. Small machines on the wall grew luminescent, as if a presence had entered into them, and I heard a voice from all around. It sounded like the strange language associated with other Numerian ruins—a language with which I’m only passingly familiar—but I felt its grasping desire and knew what it said it for a demand. From the far tunnel, metal men emerged, my capture clearly their intent. They were many, and I one, and so I made my retreat, closing the tunnel behind me.

When I report this to the Society, I must recommend a full team of skilled adventurers—Sulfur Gulch sleeps lightly.

Waking this place up seems... unwise. Even for us.

CONFIDANTE (2+ goals): Twice per adventure, you can call upon your contacts, either allowing you to attempt a Knowledge check as though you had a number of ranks in that skill equal to your number of ranks in Diplomacy or gain you a +2 bonus on the check. Calling in a favor takes 1 minute, and when not in an urban environment requires two uses of this ability.

The dark-haired paladin shakes her head - though apparently at herself, judging by her next words. "My apologies for not introducing myself. I am Rhiannon Moonwing, paladin of Ragathiel. I look forward to working alongside you all on this mission. Soo... an unknown language, poison mists and metal men? My adamantine blade may be of assistance in dealing with one of these obstacles, though my magic will be of little or no use with the rest. I have a spell that allows one to breathe underwater or where there is no air for a very short timespan - I presume that could help against the poison air as well. And I will be of no help in speaking a language other than Elven, I'm afraid."

Rhiannon's primary weapon is an adamantine bastard sword, that could be useful. But Air Bubble is of limited help, and she doesn't have access to Comprehend Languages.

Lorian's contacts are able to provide him with some information.

Numeria is known for its mysterious technology. Many of Numeria’s ruins contain deadly mechanical guardians called robots.

Due to its extreme age, both the technology itself and the ruins it comes from are plagued with malfunctions and glitches. Pristine technology is extremely rare and extremely valuable, yet even partly functional devices are worth quite a bit. The Technic League maintains a tight embargo on smuggling technological devices, which drives up the price further for those who can make it out of Numeria with any goods.

Experienced explorers associate Numeria’s “ruins” with the remains of an otherworldly vessel that fell from the sky millennia ago. Little is known about the vessels’ creators, all of whom likely perished in the cataclysmic crash. Even the rare humanoid facsimiles known as androids associated with Numerian technology struggle to understand their true origins.

The Sellen Hills are a harsh land, ill suited for human habitation. The only noteworthy settlement is Chesed, a city built where the Sellen River meets the Lake of Mists and Veils. Beyond its walls, most of the population is nomadic and ethnically Kellid. Chesed serves as a capable base of operations for anyone risking the Numerian wilderness.

Like the rest of Numeria, technological ruins dot the Sellen Hills. Most of these remain unexplored due to the danger of the region, to say nothing of the danger the ruins themselves hold. Even so, some explorers dare the protective locals’ ire and mechanical threats in search of profit.

Sulfur Gulch juts from the side of a gully in an expanse even more barren than the surrounding region. The vapors that permeate the area have choked out nearly all plant life.

Rone remembers that the Ghost Wolves are notorious for their open hatred of technology and their hit-and-run raids against the Technic League. Because they claim extensive stretches of the Sellen Hills, fewer sites there have fallen prey to scavenging opportunists.

Kellids have a largely deserved reputation for distrusting arcane magic. The same is not true for the Ghost Wolves, who celebrate and train promising spellcasters to help fend off the alien constructs that sometimes emerge from the ruins. The Ghost Wolves are Xol-Nomag especially fond of invisibility, which protects against the constructs’ deadly light beams.

There is no sample of the language in the note to attempt a check on.

Rhiannon turns her smile upon Rone. "Yes! He fights against the legions of Hell itself, and His life among the Empyreal Lords is proof that redemption is a possibility for anyone - no matter what evil they were born into or have caused. But it is a narrow path for certain, and requires constant vigilance against one's own baser desires at times. Those that do evil with no regret or desire to step into the light deserve no leniency, I'm afraid. A judgement I have had the unfortunate duty to lay down more than once as a Pathfinder."

As the others speak of what Lorian's contacts have unearthed, the paladin is intrigued. "I admit, I know little of this technology, or of these robots. But a vessel that fell from the sky? Surely this would be something to see. In any case, protection from these poisonous vapors would be ideal, if any of you have the magic to do so?"

The group’s leader is a handsome warrior who confirms that you are Pathfinders before welcoming you. "Welcome. I am Jala Spirit-Eye, and you are expected. I hope you live up to your reputation."

He looks over Fahd. "You clearly work hard on those bulging muscles," he remarks. His gaze then moves to Rhiannon. "And that blade is quite impressive." Then, to Valeros, "You are evidently well prepared for battle." He glances at the other three, less martially inclined Pathfinders, and adds, "I am sure you serve well, though your talents are less obvious to me."

“You must be confident that you can gain Xol-Nomag’s favor.” He laughs, his stoic look becoming one of friendly amusement. “Confidence is good. Come, come along. We will take a meal together at our camp, and then you can present your case to her.”

Jala is happy to learn about the less obvious talents the Pathfinders, and has a compliment for each of you once he learns how you can help on missions. For his part, he fills the day-long trip with tales of battle against the Technic League, and encourages each of you to share your stories. He is happy to engage in conversation, and though he says little of Xol-Nomag other than that she is a leader who demands her tribe be prepared for anything the Technic League can throw at them, but will engage in conversation. He indicates that the Ghost Wolves could benefit greatly from trade with the Society, especially for new spells and other magical wisdom.

The Ghost Wolves have pitched their camp a day’s journey from the river, and the settlement is abuzz with activity. Some wrestle and spar, while others mend weapons and armor. Within a broad tent, half a dozen mystics consult books, familiars, and each other while discussing magical theory. Kellids of all ages busily butcher an immense boar, cutting it into strips to preserve while a several older members lead in an energetic work song to keep the pace lively. Throughout the afternoon, children busy themselves with play or by shadowing the adults.

While you wait for Xol-Nomag, you have the opportunity to ingratiate yourselves with the Ghost Wolves. Each of you should roleplay something you would like to do to either demonstrate your prowess or help with the group's tasks. Describe what you are doing and make a skill, attack or CMB check. Almost anything will work as long as you can justify it as either demonstrating martial prowess or aiding in the camp's preparedness. If you speak Hallit, note that with your roll, as it will provide a bonus, as will good roleplaying. Any witch in the group may instead learn up to two spells of a level lower than the highest they can cast without having to pay the extra expense of a tutor if they are willing to share their spells in return.

The paladin is also keen to learn from the Kellids, for their martial style is different than her own. Rhiannon prides herself in battle, and is not above using bits and pieces of other styles to incorporate into her own. She is also eager to prove her own martial prowess to the Ghost Wolves, not for the sake of vanity, but rather so that their meet with Xol-Nomag might go smoothly - especially as these people seem to place much value in such skills.

Valeros will show off his moves, he will even ask to spar with another ghost wolf with his sword if it ain't too dangerous and they can fight with their real weapons and stop the attack before they actually connect as a real hit. If not and they think it is too dangerous, they can use fake weapons, so if momentum can't be stopped they will only feel a slight bump. hit: 13 + 1d20 ⇒ 13 + (1) = 14 +2 longsword -2 to that if they use fake weapons as it wouldn't be magical.

Lorian gathered the fighters of the Ghost Wolves to work on large unit tactics, teaching them how to work together and support each other. At times, he was barking out orders like a drill sergeant. They might not understand him, but fear crept into to the most battle hardened of them. To top it off, he took them on a march for half the day.

Arin also approaches the mystics' tent.

Perhaps you could help me find the source of my own powers? Or, perhaps I could take a look at those books you're poring over and help make sense of things?

spellcraft: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 hmm, okay time for some extra effect :)

There's one other very odd thing I do: take on a mass of energy from the bastion of positive and life energy. Don't worry, it doesn't hurt...

Arin closes his eyes, and his hair begins to glow softly and float above his head as if suspended in water. The glow intensifies and begins in his skin as well until it becomes bright white. Shimmery white flames begin to lick out from his form. Soon he appears like a fire elemental, but of bright golden flame.

However, if any of the mystics reach out, they will note that his flames heal them, instead of burning them. He stays this way only for several moments before returning to his original gnome body.

Rone discusses the finer points of magic with the mystics.

Rhiannon spends time training with the warriors, coming out ahead in most of her bouts. Valeros tries to match her, but is defeated more often.

Fahd punches a tree until he has farmed enough wood to build a shelter.

Lorian organizes the warriors into a defensive formation.

Arin's light show doesn't seem to impress the mystics.

As evening sets in, the Ghost Wolves begin preparing a communal feast of dried fruit, hard cheese, and meat carved and roasted from the immense boar. Entertainment takes the form of tales both solemnly historic and vividly comedic, including a lively story Jala tells of a bumbling spine dragon. The Pathfinders are asked to contribute stories from beyond Numeria.

Xol-Nomag is present at the meal, but she does not approach or address you yet, instead observing you sternly from afar. Even her own tribe treads carefully around her, treating her with a blend of awe, devotion, and fear. As the meal ends, Jala approaches you and offers to escort you to meet Xol-Nomag. The barbarian chieftain sits cross-legged upon a tall heap of spread furs, her spiked club resting across her knees and her eyes partly closed as if in meditation. She lifts her head and fixes the Pathfinders with a piercing stare as they approach.

“We know why you have come, Pathfinders. Long ago, one of your kind did a service for us, and now you hope to turn that debt into an open invitation to explore our lands.” Her eyes narrow, and she gives a predatory grin. “You cannot think we are so simple. We know what you are here for. No technology leaves our lands, and our debt does not change that.” She leans back, as if waiting for a response.

You must make your case for being allowed to continue your mission, and then one PC makes a (potentially Aided) check to convince her (Diplomacy most likely, but other options are available if they are more suited to your appeal).

Rhiannon speaks of an adventure she shared with other Pathfinder in Heaven itself, seeking healing for another that had been sorely afflicted by a demonic curse.

When Xol-Nomag speaks, the paladin nods as though expecting this response to their presence. "Mighty Xol-Nomag, we bear a gift for you, this axe that has been crafted for a great warrior such as yourself."

Bringing the weapon to the chieftan with a respectful bow, she resumes her appeal. "We do not seek to defy your laws, but rather we only wish safe passage through your lands. We have learned of an area that might pose significant danger, and we seek only to investigate and report to our superiors, so they may be made aware of what lies there. As this area is within your borders, our exploration may also be of benefit to your own people, if there is truly a threat to be found there."

Wasn't sure of how specific we were supposed to be with details regarding Sulphur Gulch, so at the moment Rhiannon will avoid naming the place. Of course, if it's no secret she will be more forthcoming. And if asked directly, she will not seek to hide their destination in any case.

Xol-Nomag relents and declares that a band of her warriors will accompany you to Sulfur Gulch in the morning. However, she makes it clear that no technological devices are to leave the site that the PCs did not carry before entering; anything they try to remove will be destroyed.

Following a successful negotiation, Jala inspects you and your equipment using detect magic and technomancy. He explains that he needs to know what you arrived with, and thus what you are permitted to carry away.

If you want to hide something from Jala, you can make a Sleight of Hand check, or a Bluff check to create a distraction long enough to cast a spell that would allow you to conceal the item.

Once this process is complete, he shows you to your accommodations. The band sets out the next day, cutting southeast toward Sulfur Gulch, which the group reaches on the late morning of the second day.

Anything you want to do before leaving?
