You begin the adventure late in the morning after several days of travel from Heidmarch Manor in Magnimar to Kaer Maga, on orders from Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch. The City of Strangers and its 80-foot-high walls loom far above them from atop the Storval Rise.

Please introduce yourself in character and read the handout (page 3)

A blue-skinned goblin pants as the last of the stairs to Kaer Maga are summited. He was a jovial fellow who introduced himself as Jiki at the beginning of the journey, always happy to play a tune on his flute or share a story of a previous adventure, but the climb was obviously not kind to him. "You'd think that a place this high up would have the decency to have a bit of snow, or at least a refreshing breeze," he complains. Rallying, he continues, "But at least civilization is ahead. Let's get to the Sorry Excuse and see if we have a moment to ut our feet up."

"No offense to all of ya, but I gotta find a tavern to play in, and fast." The human strums his lute and strokes his blond hair. "At least we didn't have to deal with too much trouble along the way."

A few zombies were too many for his comfort. This entire mission reeked of betrayal, but Manny had to make up for his earlier failures. He forsook a band of Aspis agents who were legitimate in their efforts. The other Pathfinders disagreed and he found new allies.

It's a lesson he had taken to heart. These hobgoblins deserve a chance. If they are legitimate, then they will prove powerful allies against the greater threat. If they are duplicitous, it's best to deal with them now, before the Tyrant is breathing down civilization's neck.

Along with Jiki and Emmanuel, a halfling is climbing the stairs. "Phew, this is quite the workout," he says as they've finished climbing. He's wearing well-worn travel clothing that's been patched up many times over, and looks as if he hasn't had a bath in a few weeks. Despite the effort, he doesn't look too out of breath. "I've recently been to Arcadia and Tian Xia by boat, it's nice to travel using my own feet once again. Luckily we don't have to stay in here too long, I'm looking forward to that training grounds outside."

Around his neck dangles a holy symbol of Gozreh.

He pulls at Emmanuel's waistcoat. "Wait, the Venture-Captain said to not keep the hobgoblins waiting too long. Can't you play in the Sorry Excuse?
Also, why do you need to play that bad? Am I not good enough company for you?"

He looks at Emmanuel with big, round eyes.

Oh no, not again.
No, don't do it Arlo.
Oh no, those big eyes. Reminds Manny of his early days when he would beg for sweets. His mom would laugh and bargain for a day of chores (or spy duty) for a cookie, and he'd do it.
Dammit mom, always playing him like a fiddle-

"Okay, okay. We'll play at the Sorry Excuse. That was my plan, anyway." He exhales.

A deep red-scaled Kobold enters the room, scanning the floor for trash. He doesn't speak for an uncomfortably long moment, then looks up, surprised to find himself where he is.

Perhaps last up the stairs is a tall (human) woman. She wears the robes of a scholar, and the ink on her fingers certainly tell the tail of someone familiar with the use of a quill, and not scared of their sharp ends.

However hanging at her waist there is another sharp object, a rapier. And the calluses on her hands show that the quill is not the only pointed object she is familiar with wielding.

Her height and build give mute testimony to her Kellid ancestry, however her face is finer and her eyes are violet, almost purple, indicating a strong varisian influence in her makeup.

And then there is the way she moves, almost like a dancer. Gliding across the ground she seems to flow more than step.

"Greetings!" she says in Taldane.

"I'm Teja Khellekdottir. Your assigned scholar and chronicler for this expedition."

The Heidmarches are likely glad when Zabu leaves. A shameless and persistent flirt, a woman as lovely as Sheila is irresistible to him and he has no problem persistently pitching his woo in front of her husband.

He also has no real ambition so he ambles along casually on the trip to Kaer Maga and is later even than Teja.

He nods to the men but flashes the woman a grin. "Well, aren't you a tall drink of water? You know, climbing is one of my favorite hobbies," he says.

"I'm Zabu, by the way," the gnome with the wild hair and feral features says. He's wearing armor but, other than the spiked gauntlet covering his right hand, he is unarmed.

Zabu's definition of grace involves chomping a badger with a single bite. Every time Manny has tried to get a date Zabu sinks it with one of his aggressive one-liners.

Between Arlo's charms and Zabu's "charms" Manny hasn't gotten a chance to do much more than the mission. Getting this over with would get them out of his hair sooner rather than later.

"So the Sorry Excuse must be... that way, right?" Manny is eager to lead.

Inside Kaer Maga, a cheerful leshy approaches the group. "Got your message, boss," she says to Jiki. "I'll help out how I can. Which includes the denizens of this pub you're headed for, right?" She then turns to the rest of the party. "Sneezewort. A pleasure."

As you make your way towards Kaer Maga, some of you chat as they go up, while others try to focus don't the breathing part.

Jiki:

Hobgoblins from Oprak are making headway in improving the reputation of goblinoids throughout the region, but they still face a great deal of prejudice stemming from the bloody Ironfang Invasion and their reputation as monsters and murderers. There are many hobgoblins who still cling to these old ways, but General Azaersi continues her efforts to bring hobgoblins and other so-called “monsters” under her banner of diplomacy.

Teja:

Since the armistice between Oprak and the surrounding nations following the Ironfang Invasion, relations have steadily improved to the point that hobgoblins have assimilated into the surrounding area.

Finally, you get to and through the gates and begin the search for Sorry Excuse. You pass some other Inns called Blood Invasion, Helpless Charms and Badger Chomp when finally you see a small Inn called Sorry Excuse. You can hear some humans saying "I tell you, Drumbar. Someone should kick those Hobgoblins out of this inn. We could round some boys and teach them a less" you hear as they depart.

With nothing better to do you enter inside.

Laughter and shouts rise from the boisterous crowd that occupies the cheaply furnished tavern room at the Sorry Excuse inn. The staff moves from table to table with practiced efficiency to take orders and deliver pints of frothing ale. Four hobgoblins seated near the entrance size up everyone who enters and ignore the mugs on their table.

Seeing you, one of the hobgoblins stands up and approaches your group.

"I am Sergant Drussem, squad leader of Iolite Squad Alpha. You can call me Sergant. Who is your commanding officer?" she says in a military voice looking at the six of you

Drussem is slightly taller than the rest of the hobgoblins, her armor is well made, and her equipment—from her cloak to her sword and shield—is utterly unadorned save for the flag of Oprak at her shoulder.

Ugly crowd. Also, they're hostile towards Hobgoblins.

Manny thinks about the many inns he could have played at today. Opportunity by him, but he has a mission to complete.

The hobgoblin squad sticks out, and Sergant Drussem makes no effort to blend into the crowd.

"Wait, we have a leader?" Manny wonders. Zizark is too absentminded. The last thing he's doing is giving Arlo more control over him. Zabu... no, just no.

So he points to Teja. "You're the boss?"

"And your first training lesson is in, ahh, distributed command. While we are on an expedition while there is often a leader - each in turn takes a lead in areas of their expertise."

"We are always polite..." she turns around and begins to sign to one of the other Hobgoblins. He looks surprised and signs back. Sergeant Drussem repeats her signs. One of the hobgoblins, the one with a massive scar on his head, goes to the bartender and speaks with them. Soon after everyone gets a pint, the inn owner yells "A round on Iolite Peace Squad Alpha"

Sergeant Drussem takes you to the table. She calls her soldiers to attention before introducing each of them by name. Akrag grins broadly and extends his lanky arm to shake hands with each of the Pathfinders, his belt bristling with small bladed weapons.

"This is Akrag, he is our drill instructor. Very much interested in practicing his knowledge and skills."

Gintka, their sapper, gives a quick nod as Drussem introduces her before she returns to fidgeting with the metal buckles and sealed vials adorning her gear.

"This is GIntka, she is an engineer. She is great at what she does, just at times she lacks focus."

Finally, the Sergeant introduces Ozaril, their veteran scout, who gives a perfect salute, his fingers coming close to the many scars that cross his head.

"This is Ozaril, the oldest of our squad. He is our Scout."

What I'd like you to do is poke your head out the door and see if you can spot any troublemakers. Take a note or who is where, and when we leave, we'll see who is still there."

Then directing a grin to the sergeant "And to avoid confusion... can you tell me what your instructions are? Our own management has told me what they think your instructions are, but... sometimes these things get confused. Best we are all of the same understanding, eh?"

=====================

As you leave the tavern Ozaril takes a look and nods that it is safe. You depart and quickly leave the city without any incident happening.

The journey from Kaer Maga to the training grounds many miles of varied terrain and should take multiple days. During one full day of travel, you have a chance to see how well do Iolite Squad Alpha operates. They set up a camp in no time and set up watches. Sergeant Drussem orders are done without bickering or delay, the wood is collected, a fire set up and meals prepared.

Ozaril usually scouts ahead to learn the lay of the land while the rest set up the perimeter.

The first day passes by, uneventful. But during the second, when Ozaril was scouting ahead, he quickly came back

"There are troubles ahead! Some caravan is set up near an abandoned building and a pack of wolves is threatening to overrun them." Ozaril speaks to Seargeant Drussem who turns towards you.

"It seems that some humans are in a pickle. We could make our perception of ourselves better by helping them. What do you think?"

Teja listens to the sergeant before suggestion "We'll have lots of time on the road. A good bed for the first night would be appreciated."

While on the trail she tries to work her way through the various hobgoblins, spending an hour or so with each, walking or talking as they see fit. Just getting to know each of them.

As Ozaril returns with the news of the wolves she nods. "Excellent thinking Drussem. Lets go help them out."

The wolf bites Zabu but it does not seem to slow him down.

Teja, threading silently walks behind the warg and strike him twice with her rapier. Both attacks just barely hit, taking down the enemy. The body falls to the ground no longer holding Zabu.
