Ruby Phoenix Tournament Games I've Played (Session Tracker)

Located in the Taldan Capitol city of Oppara, Venture-Captain Muesello’s lodge hides behind the facade of a simple bait and tackle shop, which Muesello dutifully maintains to provide Pathfinders a local base of operations that doesn’t invite much scrutiny. His pockmarked face breaks into a smile as the bell on the door jingles, and he motions for everyone to gather in the building’s back room before locking up the shop and propping a sign in the window that reads “Gone fishing.” An elegant, dark haired lady sits at a table by a small fireplace.

”This is Lady Glorianna Morilla,” Muesello says by way of introduction. ”she is a Taldan noblewoman and a valuable and stalwart ally.”

Venture-Captain Muesello quietly closes the door behind him before continuing. “The Pathfinder Society does not have a sterling reputation in Taldor, despite my and others’ efforts to impress the local moves and shakers. As a result, the most prestigious universities and colleges often deny our agents access to the best libraries in Oppara, thinking we are meddling good-for-nothings. As one of the oldest intact civilizations near the Inner Sea, these libraries no doubt house some very precious volumes. Recently we received a most wonderful opportunity—an invitation, really, from a very powerful patron,” he adds as he withdraws a scroll tube with a broken wax seal from his apron.

“This patron will secure us a couple hours in the rare books collection at the Kitharodian Academy, during which we may peruse for whatever we wish so long as we also retrieve several documents of interest for our friend. That,” he punctuates by tapping the scroll tube on the table, “is where things get interesting. Apparently there is an even more precious archive hidden beneath the academy’s library, and our patron believes it to contain numerous original records and undoctored historical accounts otherwise unknown to the world! Our contact knows how to get into the archive and has shared the secret with us.

“Two hours is little time, so you must make the most of your time. I know it will be tempting to research other interests, but it would be selfish for the Society to think of itself when the Worldwound’s borders threaten to envelop Mendev and beyond. I am sending you in with the express purpose of uncovering more information about the Shining Crusade, the sustained war against the Whispering Tyrant a millennium ago.”

Lady Morilla snaps open a fan to fend off the room’s growing warmth, adding, “Historically, Taldor is the authority on massive military campaigns, but most texts have undergone extensive revision to serve some political agenda or another. Entering this hidden archive is an excellent opportunity to learn from the real mistakes of the past and apply those lessons to the Mendevian Crusade.

“Remember that you have permission to be in the academy’s library, but not in this secret archive, so do everything you can to avoid being noticed while exploring. In fact, the fewer clues you leave of your passage, the better. Specifically do not steal or destroy any of the library’s contents. A few slip-ups might alert the authorities that someone has been poking around, and too many with give them enough evidence to trace this act to us.”

Muesello opens a drawer in the table and begins pulling out a couple small parcels wrapped in cloth. “Any questions?”

Gaius speaks to Venture-Captain Muesello:
"Yes some questions sprang to mind, some obvious but still need to be asked:
1) What is the list of 'several documents of interest' that we need to obtain?
2) Who is this 'friend'?
3) It sounds like we are to spend only the minimum time necessary in the Kitharodian Academy to obtain the 'documents of interest' and then we are supposed to enter the hidden archive?
4) How do we get into the hidden archive?
5) Do we know how either the Academy or the hidden archives are protected? Staff, guards?
6) Is there any specific information about the Shining Crusade we are to obtain? Any particular tomes, authors, titles, etc.?
7) If we aren't stealing the documents, how are we to 'obtain' the documents of interest?
8) What are in the parcels?"

I'm sure I've missed some questions to ask so please someone help me out. :)

I second Master Subtiliter's sentiment as a Mendev native and having served as a captain of Nerosyan's tower guard. The situation up there grows more dire. It is why I volunteered my services to the Silver Crusade and the Society itself. To expedite and even recruit those who are willing to quell the demonic threat."

Ruby Phoenix Tournament Games I've Played (Session Tracker)

"I like that you're not satisfied with going in blind," Muesello says as he settles in to answer Gaius' questions.

He begins by handing over a small piece of paper with several titles listed on it in answer to the first question. "Of course, copy anything else of interest you find. I am sure I can trust your discretion about what is 'of interest.' Needless to say, taking anything with you will only add to the chances that this mission will be discovered so don't abscond with any texts just copy what you find."

With that, he hands out packets of blank paper and writing instruments to everyone.

Muesello hesitates for a moment before answering the next question. “I have little doubt that we’re performing some small piece of a larger political plan, even if we benefit from the service. That said, I would hate to lose an entire team of promising Pathfinders. If you must, use this as a bargaining chip…” he says as he hands over a scroll case, “It is from our friend and, as you'll see when you read it, you'll realize nearly anyone you meet will look at you more favorably if you surrender it, but doing so would certainly risk our friend’s cover. I’m giving it to you because I trust your discretion in the matter.”

DC20 Sense Motive:
Lady Morilla betrays a moment’s discomfort
at Muesello’s notion of exchanging the scroll tube for freedom, but she quickly suppresses her dismay.

Scroll Case contents:
The scroll tube contains an unsigned
letter that describes many of the mission’s details from Princess Eutropia’s perspective as well as a formal request signed by the
Arch-Exarch Gregorius to admit the bearers to the Kitharodian
Academy’s rare books collection. The princess’s letter also explains that the Pathfinders can find the hidden entrance to the archive by studying honor, courage, and glory.

"You are correct. Spend only enough time in the public part of the academy to find the documents and allay any suspicions before heading to the hidden archive. We have arranged it so that you will be escorted to a chamber that contains a secret entrance. When you get there, find the entrance and get into the underground portion of the library."

Muesello answers the next question. “If the archive is truly secret, then it’s unlikely that you will encounter many people. I imagine there might be traps, so be careful and resourceful."

"There isn't anything in particular we want you to gather about the Shining Crusade. I'm sure you'll know what is most valuable when you see it."

He points to the bundles of blank parchment to answer the question about getting the documents out.

In addition to the paper and writing materials, you find one of the packages contains a potion of invisibility and a potion of pass without trace. Muesello also hands you a modified deck of illusions that contains one card for each of you and any
companions.

"Under other circumstances, you just might be killed if you are caught. I believe the letter in the scroll case will prevent that, but don't take that to mean that you can be sloppy. You will be spending a great deal of political capital if you use it," he answers the question about consequences of getting caught.

"Any other questions?"

Colloquially called “the Kith,” this bard college is the largest in the city, and ranks among the largest on Golarion. Although this grand academy allows all souls that wishes to enroll the chance to prove themselves, students must adhere to a code of education and rigorous self discipline. Each department advisor sets forth the graduation requirements for their students.

The Kitharodian Academy sits atop the northern cliffs of Oppara and has an impressive view of the Porthmos River valley. The school boasts architecture as lovely as its music, and elegant domes, towers, and columns adorn the principle music hall. Tonight , mirror-focused lanterns and dancing lights illuminate the structure, making the academy a radiant beacon of Taldor’s greatness.

Crowds of commoners and nobility alike jostle to enter the music hall and the restrained roar of excitement about the upcoming performance fills your ears. You have no difficulty pushing your way into the increasingly crowded building, but convincing an usher or other member of the Kitharodian staff to show you to the library rather than guiding you into the performance hall requires effort (A Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate check.)

Alternatively, you might try to find the library on your own (A Knowledge (Local) check.)

His eyes widen as he sees the content. "Ah, yes...the Rare Books room. Right this way, right this way."

He bustles off, leading the way to a large chamber with heavy doors.

A large table stands at the center of this large room, whose walls are lined with rows upon rows of inset shelves. A set of double doors is the only way into the room, and two stone statues depicting bearded scholars with open books are the only other decorations.

"I'll leave you to your research but don't worry, I'll check in later to see if you need anything. Just as a reminder, everyone must leave when the performance ends..."

He pauses as the distant sound of conversation ends and rousing music begins. "...in about 2 hours."

He bows and sees himself out, closing the doors behind him.

Gaius sets about searching for the listed 'of interest' documents for the patron.

@GM: What check needs to be made to find the titles, if any? I actually did take Profession (Librarian) for this character.

"These statues are interesting, ja? Who do you think they're supposed to be?"

Stiggur will examine the statues to see if there's anything interesting on them, inscriptions on the books they hold, etc.

Midnight sets up her fake self to be reading books on traps.

Most of the books in this section are workbooks of famous composers, original copies of musical treatises, and withered manuscripts describing various operatic traditions from beyond the Taldan empire. Despite their academic value, the texts here are of little use in completing the Pathfinders’ mission. Both of the statues hold blunt styluses—sometimes used to help read old, fragile texts—that point to their books, but only the western statue’s book actually any words: a column of words that reads “Innovation, respect, knowledge, courage, integrity, honor, excellence, glory” in that order.

Egavreis and Midnight quickly set up their illusory personas, the latter actually activating hers while the former waits.

Gaius looks around for the texts their patron is interested in but quickly realizes that they, being about the Shining Crusade, would not be here.

As Stiggur examines the statues, he notes that the arm holding the stylus of the one with the book with writing can be shifted several degrees to change the word that the stylus is pointing at.

Radiarch grabs a few books off the shelf that may have a fleeting glance of reference to whether in Mendev or Nirmathas, both of which exemplify the Eklesya family's home of origin. Sitting them out similarly to what the others did on a table, he makes note of the statue's peculiar trait. When he finishes, Radiarch will nod to the others that he's ready to proceed.

GM, what word was the stylus pointing at when we entered the room?

"I think the one on the left is my Great Uncle Maximus; I've been told he was a great and learned man."

"Oh? I hope this deformity wasn't passed on," replies Stiggur with a grin, pointing to the unnatural positioning of the arm after moving it.

He then moves to read where the stylus is pointing.

Before Stiggur moves the arm, it is pointed at the top word in the list "Innovation."

Other than Stiggur and Gaius, everyone else has set up their illusory doubles, ready to activate them when they find and activate the secret door and leave the room.
