Farzin, happy to let someone else stand in front, steps timidly into the room, like a simple lost farm girl who stumbled into a crumbling tower. And up the stairs. And around the corner. Following a group of adventurers.
He admits to himself that it's getting harder and harder to maintain the ruse. But yet, it's so fun to try.

![]() |

You move around, carefully, but see nothing until you make your way further in. Then, you see a checkerboard of tiles with glowing runes!
I will probably not be posting until Sunday night, as I will be at a local in person convention

![]() |

Nat, intrigued, creeps forward and examines the checkerboard for any hidden traps.

![]() |

Kralgang picks his teeth while he stares at the magical squares.
"Hmmph. Bit of breakfast."
He inspects his bow string for any wear or damage.

![]() |

Farzin looks at the glowing floor tiles.
"From what I can see, it looks possible to cross without touching any of the runes, which probably means that we should touch them. But how and in what order?"
"It's a puzzle, boss!" squawks Papayo.
"Or a trap. Oh, things were so much simpler back on the farm," Farzin laments.

"It looks like a dream I had once. I was in some sort of competition; a race from one place to another, with obstacles in the way. The judges were monsters, too; I think one was a ghost! Right after I slid down a giant slide, here was this floor with colors like this, only they were constantly changing! The the ground started moving, then some angry red eyes tried to light me on fire. That was a weird dream."

Nat notices some sort of magical sensor on two of the tiles that do not have runes. Also, you hear some noise coming from the far end of the tiles, in a location you cannot yet see!

Nat fails to hit the white-scaled kobold. He does land on another rune (that he had missed), but apparently that particular rune can only be activated once. Nat also notices another trap!
White turns and runs!
He quickly gets out of sight.
Combat is over, as you can avoid the traps now.
The kobolds in this area must have higher ranking than those on the first floor. They have a variety of rough gemstones, as well as a smattering of silver and copper coins, contained in their belt pouches.
Collectively, these coins and gemstones are worth 2 Treasure Bundles.
Hero Point to Nat!
What next? Healing up or pushing on?

![]() |

"Careful, Nat," Grams says as the kobolds rush off. "You don't want to get too far ahead of us. You don't know what else could be out there, son."
She looks him over, making sure she's all right. Licking her thumb, she uses it to remove a smudge of trap dust from his forehead, the helps heal people as needed. She'll use lay on hands, unless we're in a rush, in which case I can use Medicine too.

![]() |

Kralgang suggests we push onward instead of taking 10 minutes. Who knows what these kobolds will get up to if we give them time.
If anyone is still hurt he can make them a quick tincture of Elixir of Life. He only has a minor scratch himself.

![]() |

"I will, Grams, but really, I'm alright! It was just a scratch!" Nat is only down 3; Lay on Hands would take care of it, but I'm also happy rolling at 30/33 so Grams can LoH herself.

![]() |

I'll let you handle the healing, and move on. Sounds like you are not taking 10 minutes.
The winding stairway spills out into a short hallway that leads to a receiving room. Once serving as a reception area for residents of the tower, the room now lies stripped of furnishing. To the north, another staircase leads further up into the tower. To the west, an expansive magical library, with books and scrolls stored on elevated shelves reaching up forty feet high, fills the remainder of the floor.
A library fills the western wing of this floor, its cases and shelves relatively pristine, if liberally coated by a century’s worth of accumulated dust.
The Library: Five pairs of pillars fill the room, holding aloft three platforms at 10-foot intervals, each laden with numerous shelves of books and scrolls. The ground level of the structure is empty, forcing anyone wishing to ascend and peruse the parchments above to either successfully leap high enough to reach the first 10-foot-high ledge.
You do see some runes and markings engraved into the pillars, which appear to have been intentionally obscured.
Arcana check if you'd like to figure them out.

![]() |

"Seems like a wonderful place to study magic, if that's your thing."
Farzin walks over and takes a casual look at the runes, being usually more interested in the occult than the arcane.
Arcana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

![]() |

Neither Kralgang nor Farzin can make any sense of the runes, as they are just too damaged (both failed if you wanted to reroll).

![]() |

Grams, not caring for the look of Nat's cut, grabs him and lays on hands to heal him before the group rushes off. She follows afterward, hoping no one will get too hurt again. Going to lay on hands for Nat, but not Refocus, so I think we're all at full health.
She looks around the new room.
"Don't tell my boys, since I made them crack the books, but I was never that much for studying myself, other than what I really needed to know," Grams comments as she looks around. Unfortunately, the runes aren't anything she understands.
"We probably shouldn't touch the books right now, but I'm sure this is exactly the type of thing Venture-Captain Brackett was looking for!"

![]() |

Kralgang takes a deep breath and focuses his mind, and then has a second look (spends a hero point).
Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

![]() |

Kralgang looks at the carvings again, and realizes that the runes and markings on the pillars are actually activation instructions. Touching one of the pillars and speaking the word “enlightenment” in Common activates the pillars’ magic, instantly levitating the speaking creature to the next higher level of the library structure. Touching a column and speaking the word “accomplished” in Common lowers the speaking creature to the next lower level of the library structure!
