GM Badblood |
Andwise finishes off the staggered kobold and Suizal's ray knicks the kobold slinger on the ledge above her. Tanssi meanwhile moves to intercept the dire rats running in.
Tanssi rips open the first rat that comes down the tunnel. Another rat comes running up to the eidolon, eagerly snapping its jaws.
After getting shot by Suizal's ray, the kobold on the ledge steps into the corner and covering its head it lays down on the ground.
The two kobolds who are tied up suddenly rush Ilvraria, attempting to knock the drow into the pit. The tied up kobolds' attempt is rather feeble, though and they don't manage to move her even an inch.
Bullrush, entangled: 1d20 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (12) - 1 - 2 = 9

Her skunk familiar still readies to spray on a hostile creature approaching within 10 ft.
GM Badblood |
Despite being prone and doing everything they can to avoid being hit, Irlana lands a perfect shot on the kobold on the nearby ledge. The bolt hits the kobold in the head and it leaves them bleeding.
Ilvaria begins casting another sleep spell. Her familiar readies a musk spray at the next creature to attack.
The kobold spell caster reads off the scroll that they are holding then suddenly disappears. Sir Falcon feels the invisible kobold try to move past him, but he manages to block their movement.

You can't actually be in the same space as another creature, even if it is invisible.
Sir Falcon tries to move forward, but finds himself pushing against something invisible. He swings at the invisible foe, but his blade doesn't catch on anything. One of the snipers takes a shot at Andwise. Its a lucky hit, piercing the halfling's armor right around his lung.

Tanssi continues to hold the rear guard, continuing to rip into the oversized rat in front of it.

If the first bite kills the rat, Tanssi will shift to a move action and back up towards the others while maintaining control of the tunnel. Edit: Or I roll really poorly for all three
Andwise Tunelley |
The impact of the bolt catches Andwise off-guard. Reaching down, he pulls the bolt from his chest and casts it aside- before looking for which of the kobolds was responsible. He steps diliberately into the room before pooling more acid at the brown sniper.
Acid Splash, Touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 Acid, Focus: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Suizal Anemos |
Suizal studies the kobolds. Not liking the confined spaces, she dashes into the larger room. Spying a crossbow weilding kobold, she aims at it without hesitation. "Take that, foul beast!"
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2
GM Badblood |
Tanssi finishes off the rat with a single bite, then moves into a better position.
Suizal and Andwise both move into the room and attack the snipers with cantrips, but fail to hit the small, agile marksmen.
At this point the party has neutralized most of the kobolds, but the remaining snipers and the vanished spellcaster still remain a threat. Having failed to knock Ilvaria into the pit and afraid of what the eidolon might do to them, the two tied up kobolds hold their hands up in front of their faces and beg for mercy in Draconic. The two kobolds in the northern tunnel reload their slings as they step back and send rocks towards Suizal and Andwise, which both strike them.

Ilvaria then shouts into the room.
"If you do not reveal yourself spellcaster then your whole tribe is doomed!" she says and draws her crossbow.

Irlana Systra |
Tired of the snipers Irlana reloads her crossbow and moves into the room looking for them.
To hit green?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
She frowns as her bolt comes no where near hitting the kobold.
GM Badblood |
Ilvaria casts her spell, then readies her crossbow to shoot at the spellcaster in case they reappear. The two visible kobolds both fall asleep on their feet, letting the slings they are holding in their hands fall to the ground.
Will Gold: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10
Will Caster: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
I'm moving you Irlana onto the bridge, because even though there is a tiny bit of ground in that square, I believe it is meant to be the pit.
Irlana takes a shot at one of the snipers, but its a bit low and clatters off the stone wall.
The spell caster suddenly reappears in front of Sir Falcon, but now they have their chin resting in their chest, softly snoring.
The green crossbowman reloads their weapon and fires another bolt at Suizal. The bolt buries itself in her stomach and she starts to swoon but avoids losing consciousness.
Xbow, PBS: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 = 24
Piercing: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
At exactly 0 hp, Suizal is staggered, so she will still get 1 move or standard action on her turn, although any standard action will result in her losing 1 hp and going into dying.
Sir Falcon sees the sleeping kobold reappear in front of him. As the kobold's spell wears off, he then hears another whistle of a crossbow bolt and looks over his shoulder to see Suizal almost stumble backwards.
Because it might come up soon, the ledges are a natural cave wall, so it is a DC 15 to climb them at 1/4 speed or DC 20 to climb up them at 1/2 speed.

All the kobolds by Sir Falcon are sleeping. At this point its just the snipers that are up. Do you want to change your action?
GM Badblood |
Sir Falcon will need to make a climb check. He also needs two hands to climb, so he'll either have to put away his sword with a move action or drop it as a free action.
Sir Falcon sees that the ledge is only 8 feet high, so all he needs to do is climb up a few feet then pull himself up. The rock is a natural cave surface with some footholds and handholds, which makes it a difficult task for someone unskilled in climbing but definitely doable.
DC 15
GM Badblood |
You forgot to include your Strength modifier on the climb check, so Sir Falcon was actually only 1 point away from making it!
Sir Falcon tries to climb up the ledge, but has trouble finding a good hand hold.
Fearing the cantrips and missiles being lobbed about, the brown sniper drops onto his belly before taking another shot at Andwise. The arrow lands just inches from the halfling's feet.
Xbow, PBS: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 1 = 12
Piercing: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Only the two kobold snipers remain fighting, but from their elevated perches they still remain a dangerous threat; something that the wounded Suizal can attest to.
Suizal can take a move or standard action, but any standard action will cause her to lose a hp and start dying. She can also delay and hope someone heals her.

Standard action this round and next round to coup de grace the Kobold spellcaster.
Tanssi Varjo |
An 8 foot high jump would be a DC 32, correct- so even with a running start Tanssi can't make it
With the rats taken care of, Tanssi turns (again) and heads back to the front lines. Stepping through the gaps, it heads to the base of the northern nest and begins to climb up to the snipers location.
Climb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
50 feet to reach the base of the cliff. With 30 feet of movement remaining, Tanssi can get 7 1/2 feet up the 8 foot cliff
Andwise Tunelley |

Acid, Focus: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
The discourse is followed by another blob of acid sent toward the brown sniper, as if to accentuate the point.
GM Badblood |
I'm just making you have to climb 5 feet to reach the top of the ledge, so Tanssi can get up there with the remainder of their move speed. I am just assuming that if your PC can get 5 feet off the ground they are high enough to mantel themselves up the rest of the way.
Ilvaria, I like that you're turning this into a hostage situation! Give me a Bluff or Intimidate check (I'm guessing that you're going with Intimidation)
Tanssi scrambles up the rock wall and finds themselves face to face with one of the kobold snipers, who is lying face down with a loaded crossbow.
Andwise, since Tanssi made it up, I'll assume you switched your shot to the green sniper.
Andwise lobs a glob of acid at one of the snipers, hitting them in the shoulder.

The brown kobold surrenders, as it sees that it won't stand much of a chance now that Tanssi is up to their level. The green sniper keeps his crossbow aimed on Ilvaria and shouts back in Common, "I'm not dropping my crossbow, so if you shoot him I'll shoot you right back!"
It does look like the fight is over with, at least for now. The kobold sniper looks ready to fire at the least provocation, though.
Suizal's shot did hit, so the sniper is at -4.
Ilvaria Syzrendross |
Ilvaria starts to laugh.
"Ha ha ha ... really? Well, then let us be civilized. I will walk away and I hope you will lower your weapon. I just have some rats to take care of! And you up there will allow us to bind you! You are now our prisoners!" she says.
She looks at the team. "Can you guys bind the sleeping Kobolds please! And can someone help me with a rat problem in the tunnel?"
She walks away to the tunnel and starts to coup de grace the rats with her crossbow!
Fortitude save DC 10 + damage dealt or die.
CDG, 1st rat: 2d8 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11
GM Badblood |
Ilvaria goes off to kill some dire rats. With all the kobolds disabled by sleep and color spray, the party is starting to accumulate quite a number of prisoners. Meanwhile, the green sniper lowers his crossbow but doesn't drop it and is refusing to come down from his perch, but the brown sniper lowers a rope ladder and willingly climbs down.
8 kobold warriors, plus 1 scalecaster and 1 sniper for now. How much rope did you bring?
We can hand wave killing off the dire rats.
Tanssi Varjo |
Tanssi maintains its posture at the top of the shelf, though instead of common it simply snarls at the remaining sniperr- making it clear that how the sniper handles the next several moments impacts Tanssi's next move.
Andwise Tunelley |
The halfing, taking his first moment of rest, looks down at its blood stained cloak- the pain of the wounds finally breaking through the adrenalin of combat. Reaching his pack, he pulls out his rope and a dagger, producing several lengths with which to tie up their captives.
I had 50 feet of silk rope. We can cut that if need be
Seems to be more of them than of us. I don't like the idea of this procession..."
Suizal Anemos |
Suizal smirks. "Whatever. They deserved it. If they hadn't attacked, we wouldn't be in this situation."
Irlana Systra |
Assuming that we are out of combat?
Irlana pulls her wand of healing again. "I can use my channel ability to save charges, but we should move away from any of the enemy that we don't want healed? Or just use the wand?"
Channel to heal Andwise, Ilvaria, and Suizal if we can step away from the kobolds?: 1d6 ⇒ 4
And again?: 1d6 ⇒ 5
GM Badblood |
Irlana uses her innate connection to heal her party members, while avoiding healing any of the dead or dying kobolds lying about.
Combat is over. Right now there is just one kobold who is stubbornly refusing to surrender, but he's not attacking either.
Irlana Systra |
With the healing complete Irlana moves over by the kobold that is still holding his crossbow. She tucks the wand away so both of her hands is empty and holds both hands ahead of her so the kobold can see that she holds no weapon.
"Do you understand common? I don't speak draconic so I hope so. We came here to speak with you. You attacked us. I can heal those of your group that are still alive. But I can't do it while you are still a combatant. You can stay there, but can you set your weapon down? We don't want to hurt you."
Diplomacy if he can understand me....: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Oh well....
GM Badblood |
The sniper does speak Common and becomes enraged by Irlana's comments. "You dare come to the place where we sleep and lay our eggs and say that you wish to just talk with us? I would laugh if what you said was not so vile! Your kind is not fit to be anything but slaves to our people! Leave our lands! Leave! Leave!" The kobold is shaking with rage and his clawed hand is ready to squeeze the trigger of his crossbow. Irlana can tell that this kobold is very agitated and is likely to shoot, unless she backs away.
This large chamber has straw strewn on the floor and appears to be a place where many of the kobolds sleep. There is a smoldering campfire in the center of the room. The trench bisecting this chamber is about twenty feet deep and appears to have been dug out just to create a choke point for entering the chamber. A quick search of the room doesn't uncover anything of value or interest, nor are there any lingering magical auras to be discovered.
Talking to the sniper for now is a dead end, he's too scared to surrender and too hostile to parley. The party's time would be better spent moving on to another part of the dungeon or figuring out a plan on what to do with the 10 prisoners of war they now have.
Suizal Anemos |
"Just leave him. It's not like he can do anything. Look at him, wimpy and squat.". She rolls her eyes. "It's not like kobolds don't come into human lands to loot and kill..."
She glances at Sir Falcon and waits for him to make a decision. "What's next, sir?"
Ilvaria Syzrendross |
Ilvaria is a little concerned because of the kobolds they have imprisoned.
"I would rather suggest that we bring back the kobolds to the town. I really do not know what else to do. I mean they are criminals because they admitted that they steal and kill. I personally was not affected by that means that they need to face a trial or something like that based on your human laws, right?" the Drow lady asks.
Andwise Tunelley |
"I know the results of any trial the humans would offer..." his face scrunching at thought. A moment passes "Though I figure we have little recourse left. If the purpose in our coming was to stop the Kobold raids, then the imprisonment of these along with those who perished should greatly reduce any risk they pose the village."
Looking around at the sleeping chambers, he mentally calls Tanssi back to his side- quietly weighing options.
"I suppose there are more caves here, that perhaps contain a more complete pictures. It seems as simple as Kobolds causing mischief, though I have been wrong before"
GM Badblood |
Sadly, most human communities tend to see creatures like kobolds and goblins as monsters that should be exterminated and not as criminals that would have the right to a trial.(2nd edition changes how these kobold and goblin kind are perceived quite a lot, but this adventure is a bit before that) Also note that the sheriff had to bring a prisoner all the way back to Cassomir to face justice.
Ilvaria Syzrendross |
Ilvaria is unnerved by the armed Kobold. She takes out her acid flask as a focus and walks to the remaining kobold.
“Listen, I think we need to disable you Mr. Kobold if you do not come down. This is a fact and not a threat. So either drop your weapon and come down or I’ll attack!“ she says.
Sir Falcon von Raptor |
Falcon sighs These poor idiots just need to spend some time with a real copper dragon, like one of my ancestors! He mutters in frustration
Falcon rubs his temples Let's just leave them, with the warning that if you come after us, there's not gonna be mercy a second time! I am not without honor, but if you betray this promise of honor, I will have no choice but to put you down like the spineless whelps you would at that point become!
He looks over at Suizal We go where we were headed to before these idiots decided to attack us for no reason. And proceeds further down the path.
GM Badblood |
Giving the kobold the choice to surrender or die, it lets out a cry, "Let the Bloodvow Clan reign forever!" before raising its crossbow at Ilvaria. It looks like this spunky little fellow is choosing to die a hero.
