Teric lands on the ground, straightening his Hellknight uniform. "You've best make the choice quickly. It looks like the Hellknights have driven off the morlocks too. They're not far from here. I think it might be safer to wear the mock armor and keep quiet. We already look like an odd bunch. So we're sent in as reinforcements, yes?"

“Aeliah never gone wrong following Nina Brightspark advice, Slick Man.”

Amazingly, Aeliah’s posture straightens and her chin lifts, as she marches up to within 10 feet of Teric. She stops. Snaps to Attention, and stares at a point on the horizon over the sorcerer’s left shoulder.

“Ser! Armiger Signifier Aeliah of the Most Loyal Order of the Rack reports, ser!”

She snaps off a perfect salute. “Ser! Allow this lemure to congratulate you on your recent battle performance, ser!”

Then she breaks the illusion by grinning broadly.

The Waking Rune

The battle at the foot of the tower is over, and you make your way towards the Hellknights' fort.

Several armoured knights of the Order of the Rack patrol the barricades. As you approach, one of them calls to you.

"Hold there! I am Paralictor Maladin Bane, commander of this fortification. You've fought your way past morlocks and golems to reach us - but why? I am expecting neither reinforcements nor relief. State your identity and purpose."

The gate remains closed.

Teric approaches holding the letter explaining their mission to rescue the missing Athenaeum researchers. "Teric Dimitrov, sir. I have orders to report to you, but for the express purpose of rescuing a group of researchers who may be trapped in Rachikan. There appears to be some interest in what they were studying."

"May we enter to discuss this?" He stands straight and addresses the Paralictor.

The Waking Rune

"Alright Dimitrov" Paralictor Bane replies. "Open the gate!" he calls down.

You are admitted to the Hellknights' fort.

The fort itself has been constructed from a combination of jistkan stone and petrified wood. The palisades are 15 feet high, and each corner of the fort has a watchtower mounting a catapult. The front gate is 30 feet across - large enough to admit wagons and animals.

Inside, there are several buildings: a stable and barn, several stores, living quarters, and a winch-and-pulley lift. In the courtyard is a barred wagon, such as might be used to transport prisoners.

A dozen or so men and women clean weapons and dress wounds in the courtyard, in the aftermath of the morlocks' assault.

Paralictor Bane approaches. "Fetch food and drink for our brothers and sisters!" he calls to his troops. The fort looks like it could hold around 50 soldiers.

"Now, come with me to the Map Room and we can discuss your orders." Bane waves you all through, and you settle into a room where several maps lie upon a table, piles of handwritten notes to either side. Bane invites you to sit.

The fort is displayed on Slide 5 along with a Hellknight portrait.

We saw you fend off the attack. How well are you holding this position? Have there been any surprises besides the morlocks and golems?"

The Waking Rune

Aeliah notices that the maps are of parts of the lower city of Rachikan, and have been drawn up only recently.

"The morlocks attack frequently. Their numbers seem limitless" Bane answers. "This attack was unusual though. They came from below in a simultaneous assault. We have no idea how they coordinated with the forces on the upper level. Their savagery hides a cunning intelligence. I'm afraid that they wrecked the lift, and it's going to take us several days to repair and rebuild.

We haven't encountered any other hostiles, save for the morlocks and golems. We were confident in the security of the fortification, until now."

Paralictor Bane studies the papers that Teric hands him. The hellknight commander nods silently. "This is all in order Dimitrov. You should descend as soon as the lift is working order again. Until then, you and your troops should get settled in. There are bunks available, though you'll need to fit into the sleeping shifts. Dismissed."

You have the run of the fort at this point - what do you do?

I will put up basic descriptions of the various areas in Discussion.

During the journey Aeliah has discovered everyone except Pai can speak Elven.

Desperately afraid her savage Taldane accent will draw attention to the party, she speaks quietly in Elven, with her hand on Pai’s shoulder to show she is not deliberately excluding her, while hoping someone will translate for the gnome.

“An rogha é eitilt síos an seafta? Tá dhá scrolla agus dhá phota agam le cur le duine ar bith nach féidir leo eitilt leo féin.”

“Nó ar cheart dúinn níos mó faisnéise a fháil timpeall an champa ar dtús agus cuidiú le cosaint i gcoinne ionsaí eile a d’fhéadfadh a morlock ann? Ar chóir dúinn scoilt suas nó cuairt a thabhairt ar gach láthair mar ghrúpa?”

“Is áiteanna soiléire iad sóisialú agus cuidiú leis an ardaitheoir. N’fheadar an bhféadfainn cuidiú leis an iarracht innealtóireachta i bhfoirm fiáin?”

Elven:
“Is flying down the shaft an option? I have two scrolls and two potions to supplement anyone who can’t fly on their own.”

“Or should we get more intelligence around the camp first and help defend against another possible morlock attack? Should we split up, or visit each location as a group?”

“Socializing and helping with the lift are obvious locations to check out. I wonder if I could help the engineering effort in wild-shaped form?”

The Waking Rune

A few armigers are gathered around the broken lift, supervised by a masked Signifer.

"If you can help with the repairs, that would be welcome" says the Signifer. "Though in truth, it is more of a rebuild. Those morlocks are less stupid than they appear: they know the importance of this machine and they tore it apart. Fortunately we have raw materials." She indicates the storeroom close by.

You can certainly use Knowledge (engineering) to help out. Some Craft skills might also be useful - Carpentry included. Only one roll is needed, but you can decide who leads your efforts and other PCs can Aid. I don't think any Wildshapes would be particularly helpful though.

Thinking it unlikely anyone not under fire would do woodwork in plate armor, Aeliah finds an out of the way location to remove and stow her mock armor.

She goes to work wearing a black silken catsuit, black cargo shorts and combat boots, along with a black balaclava and neck-gaiter to maintain some menace as an Armiger Signifier of the Rack.

Nina's expertise with wood proves invaluable, and she's able to direct armiger (and Pathfinder) work crews to good effect. But the Signifer was right, the lift needs rebuilding. Together you will substantially cut down the time it would have taken the Hellknights on their own, but there's still a couple of days' hard work ahead. You will still have time to explore the fort though.

Pai:
You are approached by a scholarly-looking half elf. "Pellius Thrune" he introduces himself with a slight, stiff bow. "Won't you come and examine my folio? I've been gathering our research together and trying to fashion suitably robust tome bindings, but you just can't get the materials out here. And Rachikan is so dusty! You'd expect a cavern to be damp, but no! And what about you? What do you do, exactly?"
