Choombolat watches the elven rogue work from a corner of the room.

Moved him into the room.


Borkinhaf moves up to the southeast corner of the fountain, in hopes to disable it. But before she does anything, the mermaid activates! Water slowly starts to drip from it's mouth as it seems ready to spray!

actually, looking at the map she will move out of the room and to the door but not open it, but then she will do a perception check to try and hear what's on the other side.

Choombolat notes the trap about to trigger and wonders to himself whether risking their necks to get the money faster was really all that much better an idea than just spending a while getting more familiar with the Mage Hand cantrip.

But it's too late for second thoughts now! Having absolutely no idea how to jam the mechanisms and well aware that he is not physically strong enough to smash them, the wizard takes Bruna's advice and takes cover in the previous room.

Borkinhaf, distracted by the Mermaid, doesn't hear much. Maybe some movement, but it could likely just be the statue!

Slorol moves up and stands guard.

Choombolat moves back, trying to avoid whatever is about to happen!

Slorol raises his shield to block the attack, but is now soaking wet.

As Borkinhaf opens up the door... she spots five kobolds standing before her. Them seem to be scrambling to get ready - they must've heard the mermaid statue go off! But they're ready to fight...

"Thanks, Slorol. What's the plan? Rush through to the next room or fall back to this one? Got to be one or the other, we can't stay in the middle with that thing!"

Bruna feel free to weigh in too - six seems like a lot, but I'm up for whatever you guys are. I do have a burning hands AOE prepared, although I can't get close enough to use it this turn. If we decide to rush through and fight, I'll double move on my turn.


@Bruna, don't think so. Closing a door is an interact action. So you'd need to Step -> Interact -> Step, but the below rule says you can't unfortunately.

Moving Through a Creature's Space wrote:
"You can’t end your turn in a square occupied by another creature, though you can end a move action in its square provided that you immediately use another move action to leave that square."

Bruna pushes Borkinhaf out of the way and closes the door. She holds it tightly shut... but will it be enough?

The pink kobold runs up to the door and tries to open it... (Basing DC off of Bruna's Athletics. DC 11.)

With no luck, the pink kobold calls others over to join. The blue one runs up and tries to open the door too.

Borkinhaf takes out a healing potion pours it down Bruna's throat and retreats as far as she can.

Withdrawal it is, then! Choombolat covers his friends' withdrawal out of the trapped room, readying a spell to punish any pursuers that are too close on their heels once Bruna lets go of the door.

Readying a force bolt that I'll cast if I see a kobold.

Choombolat has very limited line of sight from where he is, just fyi.

The white kobold steps up to the chest, draws something out of there, and lobs it at Bruna.

The vial of liquid bursts open at Bruna's feet. The area is slippery and Bruna has trouble with her footing. (Orange square is the oily square)

Anyone who moves through a square covered in oil must make a DC 10 Acrobatics check or fall to the ground and stop moving. If you start your turn on the oil, you also have to make this check

The white kobold then jogs up to join his compatriots.

Slorol should be at full, having dodged and blocked the water blast.

Slorol will run up behind Bruna and encourage her to fall back. He'll raise his shield and hold the narrow corridor, shouting at the kobolds through the door in his deepest voice.

Let's go back to where Cherem and Borkinhaf are. Slorol can hold the corridor there, and maybe the kobolds and the mermaid will attack each other.


Slorol's words get muffled by the door and the kobolds can't hear him clearly. Instead, he moves up to try to block the passage.

The mermaid statue turns and sprays each of the four corners again. However, no one is in the corners so no one is hurt! The room is wetter though and the air starts to feel more damp.

Bruna nods and with a deep breath and feeling pretty wounded, moves out, leaving Slorol alone...


Bruna leaves the room to escape from the kobolds and the mermaid statue. Slorol is the only thing standing between the kobolds and the rest of the group.

The pink kobold opens the door, trigger the attacks of the yellow, red, and white kobolds. The yellow one throws a spear while the white one lobs a vial of liquid.

yellow readied action, spear vs Slorol: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

white readied action, vial vs Slorol, cover: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 - 2 = 8

The spear flies overhead of Slorol while the vial of oil crashes at his feat. (The orange square around Slorol is now oily. Moving through it requires a DC 10 Acrobatics check or you fall over and become prone. )

The pink kobold steps up and jams her spear into Slorol's side.

pink spear: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Both the brown and blue kobolds lob two spears each at the fighter (drawing one between attacks).

Only one spear manages to hit him, but boy does it hit him hard! (crit for 10 damage!)

The red kobold draws out another vial of oil from the chest, moves up, and lobs it at Slorol.

oil vs Slorol: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

And now Slorol is covered in oil! (Each time Slorol Strides, he must make a DC 10 Acrobatics check or fall prone. He can Step without needing to do the Acrobatics check. He can wash it off in water (fully emerging himself in the pool for example)).

Then the yellow kobold picks up a rotten fish from the table and lobs it at Slorol.

Yellow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

The rotten fish explodes at Slorol's feet! It starts to smell!

Choombolat waves his friends back to safety from the mermaid trap and remains ready to cover their retreat.

Sticking to the same readied action as before, since I don't see anything better to do without getting back into the trap. I guess I can also put up a shield spell in case they do follow.


Borkinhaf waits until a better time (moved her in initiative to right before Slorol. ).

Choombolat readies an attack, prepared to shoot any incoming kobolds.

The white kobold will move up and scream at Slorol. "Get outta the way."

But his voice cracks and the other kobolds roll their eyes.

The mermaid will target any creature within 30 ft that it has line of sight of. That means the four kobolds as well as Borkinhaf, Slorol, and Choombolat are all possible targets (though Choombolat will get cover from being just around the corner).

Giving Borkinhaf a chance to escape the room if she wants.

Sorry, don't know what I was thinking. Thought the trap would only be in the room and we'd be safe in that silly little passageway. Bruna apologizes. Desna has helped me as much as she will for the day I'm sorry to say.

With Bruna's agreement, and Borkinhaf and Slorol apparently not inclined to disagree, the party withdraws back upstairs to rest and recover.

Since Bruna is on board and Slorol is away, two ayes carries it. I don't think we have a reason to rush, so let's rest long enough for Bruna to regain spells.
