Choombolat thanks Bruna while she tends his magic missile wounds.

Out of spells save for his force bolt, he readies two of the scrolls the party purchased earlier and looks for any sign of habitation.

The wizard considers what he knows of dragons and what environments might be advantageous or disadvantageous for them.

Recall Knowledge, Arcana +8

Secret Check:

?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Choombolat knows dragons are fierce creatures. Typically they have a breath weapon that the can use a few times a combat. Green dragons typically have poisonous breath. They're also fierce in combat and have several appendages to attack with.

As Borkinhaf moves into the room, she hears a rumbling. A bright-green dragon leaps into view, and although the beast isn't much larger than you, large leathery wings and snapping jaws make the hatchling look like an ancient wyrm. The creature gazes at you with cunning eyes and snorts a cloud of yellow vapor. With a fierce roar, the dragon charges forward to attack!

Bruna casts magic weapon on Slorol and then steps forward. Borkinhaf delays to go after Slorol.

Duration 1 minute. The target becomes a +1 striking weapon, gaining a +1 item bonus to attack rolls and increasing the number of weapon damage dice to two.

Bruna approaches Slorol and his weapons begins to shimmer.

The dragon slowly waddles up and opens it's maw. A cloud of toxic gas erupts forth, engulfing the heroes.

Everyone must make a DC 24 basic Reflex save or suffer 5d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 3, 6) = 16 Poison damage.

spending a hero point to try not to crit fail.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Hacking up poison gas and bits of lung, Choombolat looks around through the cloud of gas to see whether his comrades also survived the attack and wonders what to do.

Gonna see whether it took out anyone else (any more crit fails) before deciding what to do. We might want to run away, long rest, and try again, given that Bruna already used some of her heals? It might be nice to try for a do over in which we position better and it doesn't hit the whole party and take out like 3/4 of our collective hit points on the first turn.

The group manages to escape... barely. They head back upstairs to rest and tell Tamily stories about kobolds and dragons. She listens intently, worried about whats under her fishery!

The dragon is an optional encounter. Do you want to go back and encounter it or do you want to call it a day? It's going to be a tough fight.

If we spread out and have heals then it should be much less likely to TPK. Maybe we can call it as far as the Chronicles are concerned and then just the dragon for fun? Would like to test a hard encounter at full strength!

If I can cast from where I am standing (peeking around the wall), I will. If not, I'll move my token, and please ignore the last d4, making the damage 7.

@Slorol, crit on the save, so only 8 damage!

Slorol and Borkinhaf make two solid hits on the dragon! It roars out in pain! Bruna tosses a starknife at its direction, but her aim is way off Then the wizard Choombolat blasts it with a blast of arcane energy.

The dragon retaliates, first striking Slorol, then Borkinhaf, and lastly Bruna.

The ledge in the northeast corner of the room holds treasure offered by the kobolds to the dragon. It's a DC 15 Athletics check to climb up to the ledge.

Slorol looks around for gold and casino chips, but slips.

Feel free to continue to roll until you succeed. If you crit fail, you fall off the cliff and take 1d6 fall damage.

When you make it to the top:
There is a huge chest and a pile of coins. In total, there is 429 cp, 63 sp, and 18 gp in the vast pile. There's also a single giant emerald atop the heap that vaguely looks like the dragon's eye which can be sold for 20 gp.

In the back of the mushroom grotto, there is a long, winding passageway. Do you explore this way?

BB pregen | NG male (he/him) elf fighter 2 | AC 19 (21) | HP 28/28, shield 20/20 | P+7, F+7, R+7, W+5 | Explore: Defend | LLV, 30' | Hero: 1/3 | Active conditions: none

Athletics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Slorol redoubles his efforts and gets back up to the top. He finds a pile of coins and throws them in the air, yelling, "It's raining!"

I'd advocate we heal up before moving forward, unless we can handwave that.

We can handwave that.

Slorol celebrates defeated the dragon by swimming in the pile of coins!

Heading up the long, winding passageway, the path gently slopes upward and they can feel a fresh breeze coming from this direction. After an hour or so, they emerge from a small cave in a ravine outside the town of Otari. Remnants of a camp around the cave's entrance indicate that the kobolds had stayed here for some time before heading under the town to work their mischief.

Heading back to the Fishery and to Tamily, she is extremely relieved. "I knew you would do it! Tonight, we will have a feast in your honor. The town will celebrate this day for years to come. You are welcome back any time, free of charge!"

Adventure is officially over now! The adventure Troubles in Otari is a direct sequel to this adventure. I may try to run it sometime in the future, but need a little break from GMing.
