GM, did you want to contact the players to make sure that they know you started?
Thanks!

Thanks!
Yes I will do that.

MadScientistWorking |

Couldn't log into Paizo yesterday, and missed the "it's okay" message. Is it still okay?
Yes. Its still ok. We're still in the mission briefing portion.

![]() |

If we are high tier the level 5s should get the level bump.
Also, Quinoline has the Radiant Oath mentor boon to give. +9 HP (stacks with the level bump)

![]() |

I have the [url=https://organizedplayfoundation.org/Lorespire/pfs2guide._.Factions-and-Reputation#Mentor_Magical]magical mentor[/url boon.
While working with less experienced Pathfinder allies, you provide key spellcasting insights that augment your colleagues’ magic. Any PCs benefiting from a Level Bump and whose levels are lower than yours can prepare one additional spell of their highest-level spell slot or cast one additional spell of their highest-level spell slot. When casting spells of a magical tradition that is the same as the tradition you use for spellcasting, the affected PC also increases the Level Bump’s modifier to spell DCs to 2.
Looks like we should also have the skillful mentor (+2 instead of +1 on skills) and combat mentor (+2 to hit instead of +1)
However, if our level 5 barbarian doesn't show up, we may still be low tier.

![]() |

Also.
Player: Jack
Character: Thulgrun Ironfist
Faction: Grand Archive
PFS# 788-2001
Earn Income: crafting DC19 (level 4): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 5.60 gp
For his School item he will take an emerald grasshopper

MadScientistWorking |

Yeah. I thought he showed up. I'll message the barbarian later and just to remind him. Also thanks for reminding me about the level bump.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

If there are going to be a series of these saves, I would prefer it if the GM would just roll them. This could save a lot of time without sacrificing any real role play.
If this happens, I will use a reroll only if I critically fail.
Thank you

I'll keep that in mind. I'm still new to play by post. It still feels awkward rolling checks for players even though I did that already.

![]() |

When it is the full group, it just keeps the action flowing.
Same goes for initiative, etc.
If it matters, chase scenes are particularly bad in PBP.
I can offer suggestions on that if we have need

![]() |

All other things being equal, I prefer to roll myself. But rarely are all other things equal, and for PbP I often ask players to make multiple checks as a compromise between speed and self-determination.
I agree chases are problematic on PbP and would love to hear suggestions just as a general thing.

MadScientistWorking |

Yeah. I appreciate all the advice and tips. Also, I will make a post tomorrow. Work was pretty hectic this weekend so I didn't have as much time as I expected to write posts. Sorry about that.

![]() |

As for chases (especially the more modern types, where it is cooperative, fail forward, instead of the gated style of early PFS), I just basically, as GM, use one post to list out all of the needed skill checks, and the flavor text for the check.
Then, once everyone has posted all of their checks (also hopefully in one post), I go back and describe what happened.

![]() |

GM, it can be very helpful if you add the link to your slides to your profile/tag line. Just add the URL tag..
[ url = https://someurl.com]Maps and Handouts[/url]
[ooc]of course, with the correct URL and no spaces[/url]
If you are running multiple games, then just use the label as the game (Mistress of the Maze). This will help us (and you) to get to the map faster!
Thank you for considering it.

MadScientistWorking |

There we go. Once again I appreciate all the advice. Im still relatively new to GMing online.

![]() |

Do note there's a character limit, though, and the long URLs count against that limit. If you end up putting a lot of links in your header, you may have to TinyURL them.

I have definitely dealt with that in the past!

MadScientistWorking |

Hey I've been suffering from a pretty bad migraine these past two days in addition to being the only person at work. I'm going to get the post up tomorrow since its my day off. Sorry about the delay.

![]() |

Take care of yourself, MadScientist.

![]() |

Feel better!
Nothing helps my migraines but I do ease them up a bit with caffeine and dark chocolate.
Or maybe I just like caffeine and dark chocolate.

![]() |

I usually go with 600mg ibuprofen, 500mg acetaminophen, and plenty of coffee... though in the past when they were worse, I did use Imitrix nasal inhalers. The latter worked really good for me.
There was something I recently heard of that was supposed to be good as a preventative... something you could eat... now, if I could only recall what that was.

![]() |

I am getting a little concerned that we are not making any progress. I had hoped to play this character at Paizo Con...

![]() |

I think it best that we table this game until after PaizoCon so everyone can play their character there without a conflict.

![]() |

I don't plan on participating in PaizoCon, but I am willing to play faster than we have been in order to end before PaizoCon.
I don't like the idea of tabling the game (if that's even a thing - does it unlock characters?) but would go along if it were legal, everyone else were on board, and we meant PaizoCon proper and not PaizoCon PbP.
Tabling the game for PaizoCon PbP would mean a 10-12 week pause from now, and I would favor disbanding the game rather than pausing for that long.

MadScientistWorking |

Im back. Sorry about the delay but I've had migraines the past few days and was relatively sick. Weirdly enough your actually more than halfway done once this combat is over. Its more of a skill heavy scenario and you are weirdly half way done.
Its in a month from now if we want to see how much is left after this next combat we can table it. Unless I got the dates wrong in which case we've made a horrible mistake.

MadScientistWorking |

It's May 28-31.
If you think we can finish, I'm game to go!
Yes. Its a short scenario. Part of the reason why I'm drawing it out is that it really just relies on the GM elaborating on the weird stuff going on in the scenario because otherwise its short. I'll try not to meander on the roleplaying and encounters from now on.

![]() |

We actually cannot do that. It is explicitly against the rules. Our characters are in this adventure until we finish it.
GM MadScientistWalking, I am good with the storytelling, but let’s try and get the encounters done expediently
Thank you.

MadScientistWorking |

So ignore the weird mistake in the attack roll. I accidentally forgot that it keeps track of the roll order so that I switched Quinn's recall knowledge check roll which was an 18 with the attack roll which was a 3.

![]() |

Just dawned on me, we are low tier?!
2+3+3+3+6=17
We would have been high at 6, but our barbarian never showed.
Huh.

Huh.
I'm sorry about that. I forgot to mention that but yes because the sixth player never showed up you were knocked down to low tier.

![]() |

No problem, but good to know you caught this!
Thanks.

![]() |

FYI - if it wasn't obvious, thulgrun was kind of built to have a good AC in spite of his DEX and no armor.

![]() |

If I didn't disproportionately play monks in my home games, I'd definitely make one for PFS. They're very cool. :)

![]() |

Thanks for running, GM MadScientistWorking!
And thank you all for a fun game!

![]() |

Pretty sure I still get to roll day job even though I used a pregen, but I roll the day job for the level of the character I'm using (level 2, so using the level 0 chart) herb lore: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Also field commissoned agent, so the other 4 days herb lore: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

![]() |

You should double check all of that. I thought you get gold and EI commensurate with the lowest level of the scenario (character level 5), and cannot apply the credit until your character gets to level 5 by other means. I am pretty sure you don't get Field Commissioned for pregens.

![]() |

Indeed.
Chronicles not being applied to 1st level characters should be held until the assigned character reaches the level of the pregenerated character. Pregen chronicles assigned to 1st level characters gain the following limitations: - Award Treasure Bundles/Gold as if the earning character was 1st level. - Characters do not benefit from any boons or item unlocks until the character reaches the minimum Chronicle level - Downtime applies as to a 1st level character. - Chronicles apply in the order in which they were played. Add all earned rewards and make Downtime checks before applying the next Chronicle. Applying credit in batches may advance a character multiple levels. The character’s level cannot exceed the level of any Chronicle applied to them, so any out-of-level Chronicles applied are lost.

![]() |

The punctuation is confusing, but I believe it reads as such in outline form:
1. Chronicles not being applied to 1st level characters should be held until the assigned character reaches the level of the pregenerated character.
I think this applies to you.
2. Pregen chronicles assigned to 1st level characters gain the following limitations:
2.1. - Award Treasure Bundles/Gold as if the earning character was 1st level.
2.2. - Characters do not benefit from any boons or item unlocks until the character reaches the minimum Chronicle level
2.3. - Downtime applies as to a 1st level character.
2.4. - Chronicles apply in the order in which they were played.
2.4.1. Add all earned rewards and make Downtime checks before applying the next Chronicle.
I don't think any of this applies to you.
3. Applying credit in batches may advance a character multiple levels.
3.1. The character’s level cannot exceed the level of any Chronicle applied to them, so any out-of-level Chronicles applied are lost.
I think this applies to you.
---
I'm officially flip-flopping on whether Field Commissioned would apply.
I now think it would, assuming your character doesn't retrain out of Field Commissioned before level 5. So you would earn Treasure Bundles commensurate with Level 5 (10 gp/TB), you get a Task Level 3 failure (9 vs. DC 18) for 8 days, a Task Level 3 failure (15 vs. DC 18) for 4 days, and all of that (plus the level-specific items) are locked until Character Level 5.
Not sure if you get the boon(s) immediately (or even if there is a boon).
But Thulgrun is high enough on the PFS food chain (I think his name is on the Paizo website, indicating the biggest of wigs) that if he says something different, definitely take his word over mine.

MadScientistWorking |

Yes. Thulgrun knows what he's talking about.
Also I just want to say thanks for putting up with my newbie PBP gming. I definitely appreciate how much you all gave me advice me as this is my second time running online. It's a lot of work.

![]() |

I just realized I haven't posted my PFS information.
