Jacques, Will Save Please vs. a Mental Enchantment Spell.
Sir Devereaux the Brave obliterates a rat. Like seriously. Look up the spell disintegration? It's like the rat crit failed a save against an empowered version of that spell. Poof, rat dust floating on the wind.
The former rat's friends, however, just see a tasty human in front of them and converge to eat his eyeballs.

Yellow vs. Dev FF - Agile MAP: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 7 - 4 = 14
And they get a couple nice bites in, ouch!
And then a bolt zips out from behind the tent, before the shooter runs to the west and disappears again.
Crossbow vs. Jacques FF: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
And without even meaning to do it, Jacques raises and deflects the bolt with his sword. Or was that Finley? Hmmm...
But the dwarf isn't as sneaky as he hoped. This time only Ellen isn't sure where he snuck off too.

Ellen obliterates the two remaining rats. Well, not like Dev did. More like stomping on them until the have the consistency of warm hairy gruel.

"Not many rodents can stand up to a fox," Ellen shrugs. "It was poorly-matched."
Miyazaki "Dr. Truffles" Akimi |
Cursing for once again not getting to use Pursue a Lead not paying more attention to their surroundings, Akimi frantically pulls out their crossbow and loads a bolt, moving north-by-northeast to get a better angle on the dwarf trying to be sneaky.

Jacques scares, but doesn't otherwise harm the hidden dwarf.
Ellen stomps on rats until they are paste on the ground.
Akimi moves and prepares their crossbow.
The big meanie casts a spell. Ellen feels an urge to maybe just leave. But maybe that is just what the dwarf wants?!? AND SHE DON'T DO THAT NEVER!!! The dwarf then darts through the tent and emerges on the other side, preparing a flank with his brother, probably.

Ellen is scared. Well, not like running away, more like a moderate confidence penalty to her abilities (Frightened 2). Maybe she just isn't as good as she thought? Dwarves are a lot tougher than rats, after all.
Correct that the bola does not allow damage and a trip. You also don't even need to 'hit' to use the trip. You literally just roll the athletics trip attempt, nothing else.
Dev manages to wrap up the dwarf and take him down! He does not look happy.

Generally speaking, I use the first roll of a post to determine outcomes, if that is the roll that should be used. But in this case, since you effectively wasted a 20 on your second roll (and I really hate players losing those), I made a GM call and combined the failure and the crit into a success.
Devereaux, The Crescent Moon |
This is where 1e and 2e get me. I am used to having to 'hit' then see if the effect resolves after. So I keep thinking I have to hit with the bola and then see if I trip the guy. This is the problem when I only use the weapon once a month irl, lol. Thank you for being awesome at what you do!

Ellen darts up to get a view of the formerly hidden dwarf. Then she shows him why they call her Captain.
She takes a powerful stance and begins charging up her soul power. Electricity crackles and tiny droplets of water are sucked from the grass to swirl around her. The droplets spin faster and faster, sharpening into points of ice. And then with a crack of thunder, her tail sends the charged electricity and cold at the dwarf, who can only look on with wild-eyed concern and try to shield his face.
Slamming brutally into him, electrical burns score across his arms and his beard freezes, parts cracking off from the frostbite. He shakes his head to clear it, Ellen's attack won't be something he soon forgets.
He lips curl into a grin, "Shockingly, it's ice to meet you!"

Akimi gets a momentary horrible sensation of being surrounded by murderous dwarves before blinking and looking around. They breathe a sigh of relief as they're still right where thy were a second ago (more or less anyway lol).
Sadly, that damn "sneaky" dwarf is still just out of sight, so they take aim on the one they can see. The target is down on the ground, making it hard to pinpoint a specific weak spot, but Akimi can just make out the area near the spleen through the grass and aims for that. They pop off a shot and reload.
OK so when prone, you are flat-footed (-2 AC) but you also gain a +4 circumstance bonus to your AC vs ranged (so a net +2 vs ranged attacks, which this is obviously).

Jacques ignores him and gets the best of the other dwarf, stabbing him with Finley.
The prone dwarf sighs and stands up, "I coulda sworn that would work." He looks uninjured. The bolt is sticking up out of the dirt near where he was.

In an utterly inefective and laughable attempt, both Ellen and Akimi fail to hit their targets. Akimi is struck with analysis paralysis and flips back between their targets before missing halfway to neither. Ellen jumps as the bolt snaps into a tent near her and her punches fail to land with any force.
But then Jacques and Finley make up the difference. The braggart dives through the dwarf's legs, no small feat, then stabs up with Finley right through a gap in his armor, leaving a grevious bleeding wound. OUCH!
He stands and taunts the Asmodean, but is pretty much ignored as the dwarf screams over his comments in pain.

When taken to Dying, your initiative shifts to 'just before' the enemy or hazard that took you out. This gives your allies the most possible time to heal or stabilize you. This is why Green now gets to go, fyi.
His brother releases a guffaw, "I knew he was the weak one! Yeah, I can kill that fox next, sure. This is just like that time a couple weeks ago hunting the wolves, kill a deer as bait and wait for... oh wait, I should just let them find out." He strides up and stabs at Akimi.

Ellen flanks the sorta leader of the two dwarfs, landing one solid blow between two feints. Her fist connects with his breastplate, but the blow definitely compresses his chest, breaking a couple ribs.
Jacques strides in and this time, when the dwarf expects him to tumble under and ducks to block, he hops clean over him and stabs into the back of his neck! What a sneaky bugger that Jacques is.
Akimi strides over and does quite a bit of healing. Their bandages are certainly getting a good workout!
Dev stands and suddenly becomes many more Devs. If this was Jacques, everyone would sigh about how one is too many. But Dev is sorta liked, so it's okay.
The dwarves grumble. Purple one seems in command, "Alright brother, I gotta heal up my wounds. So we won't be able to go after the healer this round. Let's chop down this dancin' fool. He keeps flippin' and floppin' all about. Show him how dwarves fight!"

Damage (Chill Touch): 1d4 + 1 + 2d4 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + (4, 3) + 2 - 1 = 13

Wounded does not add a penalty to anything. It just means when you get to 0 HP again you are closer to dying.
Will Purple vs. DC 17: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Save made, so 9 total damage. Purple is still up.
Miyazaki "Dr. Truffles" Akimi |
Akimi reloads their crossbow and takes aim at Purple to finally down one of these D-bags. Unfortunately, Purple is bobbing and weaving too much to get a clear shot, so Akimi shrugs and fires past his shoulder at Green -- despite having a much less clean shot.
Even with the cover bonus to Green's AC, a nat 3 is useless so might as well go crit fishing.
♦ Reload.
♦ Devise a Stratagem vs Purple: 1d20 ⇒ 3
♦ Crossbow vs Green, Cover: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 P Dmg: 1d8 ⇒ 6
UGH that totally would have hit if not for cover, I bet.

Akimi's self doubt is in full display in this fight. Switching targets, mistrusting their shots, questioning everything!
They are almost surprised when the bolt thunks cleanly into their target's leg. He yelps in pain, but doesn't seem ready to drop yet.
Dev manages to land an ensorceled shuriken on the big guy, who now has many battle wounds. But yet he fights on! He moves over threaten Dev with his dagger, slashing at him twice.
Purple Dagger vs. Dev: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
Purple Dagger vs. Dev - MAP: 1d20 + 14 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 14 - 4 = 12
But his strikes just hit images, popping them one right after the other. Dev has one duplicate left.
He calls to his brother, "I don't know how long I can last, but I can flank and help kill this bastard! FINISH HIM!!!" The other dwarf rushes over, stabbing quickly with his rapier.
Green Rapier vs. Dev FF: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29 hits Dev on a 1: 1d2 ⇒ 1 for Piercing + SA: 1d6 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (6) = 11 (Doubled to 22) plus Deadly: 1d8 ⇒ 1 (Total 23 damage)
Our hero of the story (because he is human, obvs) falls to the ground, spraying blood all over as his heart was pierced. It is quite obvious that Dev only has seconds before he dies. The dwarf cackles and steps up next to Akimi laughing, "Try to save him now!"
This is the closest we have gotten to true death, fyi. Dev is at Dying 3. On his turn, he will get a stabilization roll. If he fails, he goes to dying 4 and will not come back. Three players have the opportunity to prevent him from needing to make that roll. It is an action to draw a potion and an action to administer one. You all may have other things that could also work. Or just hope he succeeds!

A very injured hellhound stares down the last guard!
Devereaux, The Crescent Moon |
Well, this is all very dramatic! It would be time for a very clutch roll...
Will he or won't he?: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Grace under pressure. Well, as much grace as one can have laying face down while pumping their lifeblood onto the dirt. Not sure what gets added to that, but I hope a nat 20 saves Dev!

It won't save you from death, but is a very good start. It is also a flat check, so no modifiers. It might also not matter, if someone heals you prior to your roll. I'll ask everyone to act as though they do not know what Dev rolled, thanks!
Prince Ellen |
Ellen snarls. "I agree, actually--try and save him! Now!"
She'll take her actions after Akimi and Jacques.
Miyazaki "Dr. Truffles" Akimi |
When the dwarf sneers "try to save him now," Akimi rolls their eyes, leans down, and quickly wraps a tight tourniquet over the gushing chest wound, staunching the bleeding with hardly any effort at all.
Using Assurance (Medicine) to automatically succeed at the DC 15 Administer First Aid check to stabilize Dev.
They don't break eye contact with Green as they slap a fresh bolt into their crossbow. "You realize you're not getting out of this alive, right?" they drawl.
♦♦ Administer First Aid (Assurance feat for a total of 17).
♦ Reload.

Sir Dev the almost dead becomes less so, stabilizing into a state of gentle breathing. The dwarf seems quite disappointed, but shrugs and replies, "He's still outta the fight and you just wasted a bunch of time. I think I'll enjoy skewering your liver next!"
I'm guessing Dev will stay unconscious, but I'll leave him in the tracker till the other two act.

Her attempts to nonlethally take down the purple dwarf as collateral are so nonlethal, he probably doesn't even feel it!

Sorry for the slow posting - I'm traveling this week and had a few days of being busy with my five year old and my 80 year old mother. Catching up now.
Seeing that Akimi has saved Dev from death, Jacques darts forward in hopes of taking at least Purple out of the fight once and for all.
Acrobatics to Tumble Through vs Purple Reflex: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24 gain panache
This provides a flank for Prince Ellen, if that would have made any difference, though with a high roll of 14, probably not.
Finleystrike vs Purple's flat-footed AC: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 Ugh, hero point on that! Jacques now has 0 hero points, I believe.

Ellen punches and kicks in a very controlled manner, aiming to not kill her dwarf target.
She succeeds!
Even with adjusting for possible flanking, no hits.
Jacques burns up all his acquired cosmic karma to dart past the guard of the enemy and backstab the f*~+er good! He collapses to the ground, bleeding out.
