Jazadi:
"Exciting isn't it? Going to Osirion?" Say'ri asks as the two women lie staring up at the stars. "It's my homeland, or my families homeland at least. I've heard so much about it all my life..." She trails off and rolls over to look at her friend, who is lying comfortingly between Say'ri and the fire. "Do you think its everything they say Jaz? Or is it going to be a huge disappointment?"

Ammon:
As Ammon finishes his latest sermon he finds that a couple of his listeners are loitering - one a native looking woman with a nasty burn scar across the upper side of her head and the other a shorter woman with sharp eyes and an inability to keep still.

"Greetings." The darker woman says with a smile. "You are a follower of the Old Gods? I thought they were all driven from Osirian long ago?" Introductions follow and the tall woman introduces herself as Say'ri al'Bashere. "My father was... is... High Priest of Horus in Exile." She explains, "Jazadi and I have come to Wati for the opening of the Necropolis. Would you be interested in joining us? It's going to pay well and I'd love a chance to learn a bit more about my heritage."

Others:
"Guess the Gods were on my side tonight." Say'ri says with a satisfied grin as she empties yet another pot onto her winnings. The dwarf and the cat opposite shoot her almost comically identical looks of annoyance while the well dressed halfling woman applauds politely and Jazdi just smiles, having learned from long experience not to play cards, or dice, or just about any other game of chance with Say'ri. She does give her friend a significant look and a nod towards their new companion who is at the bar with Farkan.

Say'ri nods in return and clears her throat. "No hard feelings ladies, I'm sure the cards will turn your way another night. Now, my friends and I are here to enter the Necropolis and you're meant to have a team. I always think that the more bodies and brains you have to throw at a problem, the better, so Jazadi and I thought... would any of you like to join The Falcons? As an added inducement I'd be happy to return your money. I'm not the kind of heartless monster that would deprive her teammates of funds on their first night!" She looks around the table. "If you would like to join then could you tell us what sort of skills you have? Apart from a number of horrific tells and a frown that could probably break through a pyramid wall by itself." She adds smiling towards the dwarf woman. "I'm Say'ri. I'm very lucky when it comes to cards and other games of chance. I can fight, and I know how to use this." She pulls an oddly shaped lump of metal from a pouch at her hip, spins it twice around her finger and places it on the table with a flourish. "I'll let Jazadi and Ammon introduce themselves." She finishes.

"We are known as Uthe and we are quite skilled at manipulating arcane energy. We have no need of silly spellbooks like some mages do. We do it strictly with our own energy and spirit." Her nose tips slightly into the air as she declares this, but the tiny bells on her tail tinkle as the limb twitches in agitation. Her golden eyes narrow at the woman.

"And we are most decidedly not ticklish. You caught us unawares."

The halfling puffs out her chest and stands as tall as possible--which, including the chair she's standing on, puts her at about eye level with Say'ri. "I am Jamie Vernisant, of the Taldan Vernisants. Do not let my current appearance fool you. It is just a...minor setback. As for my skills, well, my friend, they are many and varied. Need an archmage to sling spells? A champion to stand against the monstrous tide? A hierophant to restore life to the fallen? A trickster to slyly achieve victory? Well, I can be any of these, or more. My spirit's potential is limited only by my imagination! I have a great destiny, you see, and I will not rest until I have achieved it. You'll find me a worthy addition to the Falcons."

Her blue eyes twinkle. "Jamie's Falcons! Has a nice ring to it, yes?"

Dhakira sits brooding in her chair for a few minutes. ''I can't believe I wasn't able to beat that women at least once. Is that how my ''great destiny'' starts??'' ''But then she calms herself. But I have to keep my eye on the goal. I was offered a place on their team and they seem competent enough. And I'll be able to keep an eye on them, make sure they don't desecrate the dead. It's OK the take their belongings, Pharasma knows, the dead don't need it where they're going, but the bodies must be treated with respect.''

So she exchanges a commiserating look with the cat person, smile sweetly to the halfling then up and smile genuinely to Say'ri and puts her hand out for a shake. ''It's deal. My name is Dhakira Menedes the fifth and I'm from Erekrus. I'm a fervent servant of Pharasma and I support and protect those more versed in combat. And I shine against the undead.'' She says the latest proudly.

''I'm looking forward to explore the necropolis with you, and hopefully put some undead to rest and find our destiny'' After shaking Say'ri hands, she keeps hers extended, with an expectant smile, waiting to get her money back.

"A pleasure to meet you, Dhakira Menedes the fifth." Say'ri responds, shaking the dwarfs hand as her other makes that strange piece of metal disappear again.

She then slides back a fairly substantial pile of coin to the dwarf and then does the same for the halfling.

"Falcons have no masters Jamie." She says with a mock stern face, now that she's standing she towers over the halfling again. "Jamie and the Falcons, I could live with." She finishes with a wink.

Uthe gets her money returned personally, and one of Say'ri's hands sneaks into Uthe's fur and scratches behind one of her kittenish ears. "There you go Uthe, mistress of magic. I'm sure you're not ticklish." There is a strong undercurrent of sarcasm in her words...

M Human, Garundi Conditions: Permanently dead/retired.

During conversation with Jazadi and Say’ri, includes physical description:

Ammon greets the two of you from a distance with a smile. As he comes closer, it’s increasingly clear that he is like Say’ri in at least two regards: he is both very tall for his gender and his face has its own fair share of scars, even though these appear to be from simple cuts. He is a mountain of muscle, well-armed and seemingly much more suited for combat than preaching. In fact, even his Shendyt (the traditional Egyptian kilt-like wear for men) is mostly covered by leather armor reinforced with metal plates here and there, possibly a compromise between good protection and a bearable outfit for the intensely hot Osirion climate.

”And a warm greeting to the two of you, as well! Fate surely smiles upon me this day, to find other enthusiasts for the Ancient gods, who are both such beautiful women. I am Ammon Al-Muhkalis. Is there any way I can assist you?” he replies, smiling warmly, and the dark Kohl around his eyes smoothly moves upward along with his cheeks.

However, when Say’ri admits her father’s religious significance shortly afterwards, he seems genuinely shocked for a moment. ”R-Really? The daughter of the high priest of Horus, himself? I-… Well, that just places me in even more illustrious company!” And with that, his earlier smile is back just a easily. With one hand, he follows with a couple of handwaving gestures while closing his eyes, in what could be assumed a reverent motion. With the other, he grasps a simple silver necklace of a crook and cane.

”Horus… Son of Osiris and Isis. A proud god, a deliverer and true leader. The avenger, who fought Set after he’d killed his father. A motive that has been repeated throughout many cultures and in many tales! Of course, in my own personal opinion, plagiarized from Osirion history,” he adds the last part with a conspiring whisper and wink. ”Yes, it’s unfortunately true that the ancient gods have waned in popularity, especially after the Keleshite purges. But some temples remain – mostly those not easily reached in far corners of the desert. Might have something to do with Keleshites not wanting to mess with our native elemental clans, no doubt. Hah!”

He listens to Say’ri’s proposal of exploring the necropolis with clear interest. ”I see. So not only are you favorable toward the old gods, but also willing to seek and reclaim lost Osirion history? This surely is a sign – a fated meeting of sorts, destined to pass the Lottery if taken! I would be an utmost fool to deny such an opportunity. Come, I know of a tavern where we could discuss this further. The Tooth and Hookah is just two streets away…”

Before the card game at the inn with everyone:

When invited to the card game, Ammon laughs and politely declines. ”Thanks for the offer, but I’ll pass. I know not to ask too many favors of fate in one day, and seeking victory in a game of chance over a daughter of Bes – the feline goddess of luck herself – would already be pushing it,” he says, pointing to Uthe.

He motions to Say’ri next. ”To say nothing of our adventurous foreigner lady, with strong ties to the god of ancient pharaohs and leadership himself. Fortune favors the bold, as the ancient Taldan saying goes, and I won’t risk my coin challenging her either. Hah, two bad omens from two separate cultures is too much of a bad sign for me! Instead, how about I treat you all to a drink of your choice to ease your coming pain?”

He grins and takes everyone’s orders, then moves to the counter to get the drinks.

After the card game, at present:

”Well, I would say I warned you, but I am too nice a guy for that,” Ammon says, raising his own cup to Say’Ri as the clear victor. Somewhere behind him, a guard at the bar snorts audibly. He grins over his shoulder but otherwise ignores it.

He listens to everyone list their skills and nods respectfully, then introduces himself by name. When Jamie speaks, he adds: ”Word of advice, do not try to take the mantle of Falcon from a daughter of Horus. That’s tempting the gods in a poor way, miss Jamie.”

He crosses his thickly-muscled arms and pretends to think. ”As for my own skills… well, it’s been said that many a woman has found shelter in these very arms, though I cannot say I’ve handled five at once before!”

At this, the guard from earlier calls from behind. ”Pfah! In your dreams, Ammon!”

”A toast to you too, Hadji!” he calls back through the common hall’s sounds, undeterred and still grinning.

But then he holds up his hands. ”I jest, of course. Though there is some truth in my earlier claim. I can keep you safe from whatever horror is within so long as you stay behind me – with this.”

He pulls a wicked-looking long spear of sorts from a holster on his back, which ends in a piked hammerhead. Those with martial knowledge recorgnize it as a Lucerne hammer.

”I also know ancient Osiriani and know a thing or two about history, traps and such. I think that about covers it for me.”

Spoilered the sections for length. I'm not entirely sure if worship for the Ancient Osiriani gods is currently outlawed entirely. There was a purge, but according to the Inner Sea Guide, a small number of temples remains and they aren't forgotten. Also, the majority of the population is still Osirian. I guessed that these remaining temples were in places too hard for the Keleshites to destroy easily and that faith has continued there. Feel free to correct me if this is incorrect!

The Mummy's Mask
Chapter 1: The Half-Dead City

4th Gozran 4171AR

The bustling desert city of Wati is near bursting with excitement. Adventurers from every corner of the Inner Sea region have assembled here beneath the hot Osirian sun to explore the tombs of the city’s necropolis, waiting only to be assigned their first sites for exploration.

Surrounding the participants, the public has gathered to observe the ceremony as well. There is a festival-like quality in the air, and numerous street vendors are hawking goods and refreshments to participants and spectators alike. Some merchants have even brought what can only be considered adventuring gear to sell as last minute convenience items to explorers, while others advertise that they’ll buy recovered treasures and antiquities from those who visit their establishments.

In front of the imposing edifice of the Grand Mausoleum, an immense awning has been erected between decorated pillars in the market to provide shade for the priests of Pharasma overseeing the lottery. Beneath the awning, two urns sit atop a table elevated a few feet above the ground on a wooden stage constructed for the event. The high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, sits behind the table, while two acolytes confer with her at either side

Numerous adventuring groups stand in small clusters near the stage, made up of multiple nationalities and races. Most keep to themselves, but some teams engage in quiet conversation with other teams, mostly speculating about what they’ll likely face in the necropolis.

The ceremony begins when the high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, rises to her feet and looks over the crowd. Sebti seems surprisingly young to hold such a distinguished position, but she has a confident air of authority. "Silence all. Silence please" She calls with a magically amplified voice and waits a few moments for the chatter to die down. "Oh Lady of the Graves, bless these here who have come upon the behest of your mighty servants, the great nation of Osirion. May you watch over them and guide their hands and actions as they proceed into your most sacred reliquaries. May their fates be just, and death not come to them before the time you've ordained."

“Let the lottery begin! Although many of you have requested specific sites to explore, we must leave these matters to fate. The Lady of Graves is a far better judge of destiny than we of this mortal sphere. The gates of the necropolis will open at sunrise tomorrow. Use this evening to prepare yourselves for the task ahead. Let these rules guide you in your endeavors in this holy place: remember how this came to pass, every slave’s hut is a memorial, and honor the departed. May you go with the Lady’s blessing."

The priests of the Grand Mausoleum have decided on a lottery to distribute access to the tombs to make the process impartial and subject to the dictates of fate, in keeping with Pharasmin religious tenets. The church has mapped the necropolis and designated selected sites within it for exploration, dividing them into three pools, from the smallest and simplest of structures to the largest and potentially most complex. Each party of explorers is assigned three sites, one at a time, so that a group must complete its exploration of one site before gaining access to another.

After Sebti returns to her seat, the two acolytes accompanying her each draw a wooden token from one of the urns on the table. The first token identifies the adventuring group, matching the token that group received when it registered for the lottery. The second token determines which tomb is assigned to that group. A single representative of the chosen group is then summoned to the stage to present the token his group received at registration to one of the acolytes.

Four groups are called up prior to your own; Chundren's Champions, The Amethyst Dragons, The Scorched Hand and The Flickering Four.

Vital rules of the exploration:

Remember How This Came to Pass:The Plague of Madness was unleashed upon the city of Wati while religious authorities were engaged in infighting. This rule is a reminder that the necropolis remains a holy place, and those who engage in needless conflict and banditry are not only criminals, but accursed.
Every Slave’s Hut Is a Memorial: Every structure within the necropolis is a testament to the people who lived and died in the city. Explorers must not desecrate or vandalize standing structures and tombs, but preserve them as the memorials they were intended to be. Some structures may be trapped or decrepit, but willful and unnecessary destruction will not be tolerated.
Honor the Departed: The dead should be treated with dignity and respect. If the interred need to be disturbed to recover an antiquity or relic, they should be returned to their resting places carefully. It is understood that the ancient dead are often brittle, but there is no need for the contents of a sarcophagus to be summarily dumped on the ground. This rule does not apply to the undead or other abominations.

The priest hands the token to Say'ri and with a stern gaze reminds her of the rules. "You may enter the Necropolis at break of daylight tomorrow when we open the gates. Failure to comply with these rules can result in, but is not limited to, expulsion from the necropolis, a ban on continued exploration, seizure of recovered valuables, and arrest and prosecution by local authorities. Are you clear? Please see Sebti for your allocation."

Moving onto Sebti, Say'ri is handed a map of the necropolis and a smaller sketched map that shows the site’s location in relation to the necropolis
gates. Your first assignment is an actual tomb that predates the creation of the necropolis. "This is the Tomb of Akhentepi." Sebti says curtly, not expanding any further before moving to the next group's leader.

You have until the next morning, roleplay to your hearts content!

As he trails off, he shakes his head and changes the subject. "Say, Say'ri, did you ask what the priest meant with 'unneccessary banditry'? What can and can't we take from the tomb?"

Of course, that was when more important topics came up and he conveniently forgot what he was talking about.

The next morning, after a night of comraderie, gambling and ale, you all find yourselves at the entrance to the necropolis as the gates open, alongside the other teams taking part.

Feel free to backpost if you want to.

The sturdy stone buildings of Wati’s necropolis were once part of the living city, and even now could still be mistaken for apartments, estates, shops, or tenements if not for the faded paint and desert sand piling up in the streets. Separated from the rest of the city by high stone walls inscribed with prayers and blessings, the necropolis
has an outward appearance of peace and repose.

Using the map given to you at the ceremony, you have no problem locating the site.

A rectangular stone mausoleum sits alone in what appears to have once been an actual cemetery. The trunks of a few dead trees poke out of the sand around the tomb, and a hot breeze whistles through their desiccated branches. A set of massive stone double doors is affixed to the northern side of the structure, beneath a facade bearing the likeness of an Osirian man. Windblown sand is heaped around the crypt, partially burying the doors that lead within.

Ancient Osiriani:
The name of the individual interred within the tomb, Akhentepi, is engraved upon the doors in Osiriani, along with the dates of his birth and death, indicating that the deceased was born in 2416 ar and died in 2488 ar, 11 years before the Plague of Madness decimated most of the city.

The doors are 10 feet tall and made of solid stone, with no visible handles or hinges.

DC10 Engingeering or 15 Perc:
The doors are on concealed hinges and swing outward. There are also telltale traces of mortar along the seams and jamb that has since crumbled or been chipped away, indicating that the doors were meant to be sealed permanently and not
intended to be opened again.

If you succeed by 5 or more, you also know:
There are signs of a crowbar or similar tool having been inserted between the doors at some point.

To open the door you will need to clear the sand for around an hour of sweaty labor followed by a DC 25 Strength check, or 20 with a useful tool in addition to the bonus the tool provides.

Jamie awakens early the next morning, eager for the chance to redeem herself after her last disastrous dungeon delving expedition. She climbs out of bed and regards herself in the mirror with a frown. She’s still not used to seeing Nell’s body looking back at her.

Though I suppose it is mine now. Poor Nell. I should have treated her with more regard. The regretful thought is fleeting, though, and the medium takes time to compose herself before sitting cross-legged on the floor of her room.

Jamie closes her eyes as she focuses on the potential of the Tooth and Hookah tavern. She can feel the psychic echoes of those who frequent the establishment, and her spirit begins to resonate with them.

I could have been a trickster. A dashing rogue. A witty swashbuckler. A spunky tomb raider. I can still be. I have so much potential. I am Jamie Vernisant, and there’s a million things I haven’t done. Just you wait. Just you wait!

A cold wind blows through the room, buffeting the halfling’s silk nightgown. The air hums as Jamie draws more and more psychic potential into her spirit. Finally, after an hour has passed, she opens her eyes and gives a lopsided smirk. ”Show time!” she declares.

When Jamie comes downstairs to join the others, she is wearing studded leather armor that tightly fits her full frame. It is made from hippopotamus leather, and the silver studs gleam in the light. A black silk cape is tied around her neck, and while she has eschewed wearing most of her jewelry, she still wears her gold signet ring over her fine leather gloves. Numerous weapons and tools hang from her belt.

”Falcons, assemble! To the tomb of Akhentepi!” she declares.

Not getting the joke, Uthe glances down at her pretty cream and dark gray fur. "Is this a game, this 'Strip Poker'? We don't understand the point. We have no silly clothes to take off and why would we want you to do so? You're naked under your clothes. Is this because you wish to display your breasts? We have to wish to see your huge mammaries." Comprehension seems to sink in. "Oh, is that what happens when we lose? We have to look at you without clothes on?" She shakes her head, the bells in her ears giving a merry tune. "No, we have no wish to play that game. We'll play 'Five Claws to One'. It's fun."

She begins shuffling the cards.

Ammon awakes the next day to bright sunlight, and blinks away the vestiges of a mild hangover. For some reason, he'd dreamt a humorous dream of Say'ri playing strip poker against the less intelligent and/or less sober rest of the tavern and winning, leaving her with a huge pile of clothes and the ale flowing even more readily than usual.

Until the guards showed up, of course, alerted at a potential new brothel suddenly springing up in town, claiming they were on 'inspection duty'. Of course, the next moment they were playing and drinking without their clothes just the same.

Ah, such a fun dream! If only he had those more often to chase away the less pleasant ones.

He walks down the stairs and suddenly wonders if that really was a dream. it had been quite vivid, as he recalled...
