Imara Novoron |

"That's a good idea, Shel. We need to get information as quickly as we can. No sense in us following each other all over town. Phoenix can hang out with me, Rory, so Thistle doesn't go after him." She smiles at Phoenix.
She wanders over to look at the writing on the wall. "They must be the same. I think. What are the chances that two different groups came in and started drawing on walls with weird glowing paint? Can anyone detect magic?" She speaks with a trace of sadness in her voice and reaches out to touch one of the words.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 +1 if it's some kind of magical trap.

Rydell Derrick Ellindorr |

Rydell stops, thinking about the graffiti.
It doesn't lead anywhere, I don't even know if its connected to our investigation. But.... Think about the locations we found the swords. Don't those seem like strategic points to you? I can't say for certain, and maybe its just nothing. But it does worry me, especially with that vision... Let us see if Thistle can sniff out a trail of any sort, and see where that leads before we report in.

Imara Novoron |

"It worries me too, Rydell. You may be right about them being strategic points. Maybe we can cover them with boards if they can't be removed?"
I'd still like to know the results of her perception check (and detect magic), but am otherwise okay with moving forward provided the perception check doesn't reveal something shocking or urgent.

Imara Novoron |

Imara shrugs and turns her attention to Rory and Thistle. "Let's see what your girl can do!"

Shel |

"Or burn them off. Scorched wood has its own aesthetic appeal."
Shel doesn't have detect magic prepared. Dunno if the fortune teller has it, can't find his profile.

Phoenix the Magnificent |

Phoenix hops up on one of the cots and stares at Imara. His feathers begin to rustle and glow. Suddenly, a simple iron nail appears, floating in front of the elf's face. BEHOLD! A mighty nail with which to affix your boards.
Prestidigitation to create a fake nail.

Rory Cornelius |
Sorry for the rushed post folks, but at the pace you were going I figured I should get it in tonight.
Mounting Thistle, Rory follows Cham to the room. Shaking his head as the others discuss, the graffiti, he comments. "Part of the investigation or not it's disturbing. At least we know who painted the swords, now we need to figure out why." He points to the nearest symbol, as Thistle spins, "I agree with Imara, it would be nice to know if they are magical."
Smiling at Imara. "Thanks for being willing to keep an eye on the chicken. I don't want Thistle thinking it's a play toy." Nodding in agreement. "Yes I guess it's about time to see what she can tell. It's time we move on, give me just a second to see if they are magical?"
I totally forgot Rory has spells, he casts detect magic, I did roll a 15 for survival/track earlier, do you want me to reroll it or is the earlier roll ok?

Imara Novoron |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |

Imara yells out in surprise as the nail suddely appears in front of her, then just as quickly cuts herself off as she realizes it's not threatening. She reaches up to touch the nail. Embarrassed and with adrenaline now pumping through her, she glares at the bird. A stupid chicken can cast spells and I can't? That's completely ridiculous!

GMMichael |

The group finishes up examining the painted graffiti and the room deducing the paint is the same that's used on the swords painted on the commons, the hopespring, the east tower, sanctuary, the wall of. The lower commons near the inner commons, and barterstones.
And parting company with Cham to hey head back downstairs discussing going to Sanctuary, trying to track the possible assassin, going to see Halgra, eating since it's near the 10th hour and there's been no breaking the evenings fast yet, examining the painted swords, and and going to see Sara at Clamor.
As they exit the building a lot of yelling comes from the front gate nearby and as you snap your heads in that direction you see 4 wolves tearing through the gate. 1 gets engaged by gate guards but the other three streak past them pause long enough to sniff the air and then dart towards you...heading directly towards the party...uncannily...towards you.
They appear to be smaller than typical wolves and all are foaming at the mouth as if rabid
yes the 15 does not need to be rerolled but you have more pressing things at this moment.. the combat map is in the Roll20 link loaded and ready to go. The wolves initiative is coming towards you. I'll roll it later and add it to the initiative tracker that I'll put up next round.. please excuse the map on Roll20 it's a generic town map. But it will do for our purposes for this combat.. I'll always try to grab something off line and usually it'll be accurate. At times though it may be adhoc. When you post your action move your character on roll 20 and roll initiative this round.

first combat in my game...I will post the stat block of monsters to move quicker through the combat because you will know if you got or not. When you cast a spell roll the saves of the targets...and you will know the results. Yes some of the mystery will. Leave. Though their offensive abilities will still be a mystery. It works. Let's roll.

Rory Cornelius |
Exiting the building as they talk about plans, Rory sees the four small frothing wolves rushing through the gate. As Thistle lets out a growl and lays her ears flat. Rory tells her "Steady girl, steady!" He studies the wolves as he draws his lance from it's scabbard nudging Thistle over so she would have room to fight.
Sadly not + 1 BAB so can't charge and draw weapon: 5 ft step move actions draws lance, standard total defense.
init: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Did Rory's detect magic on the paint show anything? Also not sure exactly how Thistles movement corresponds with Rory's so will need to look into that :)

Rydell Derrick Ellindorr |

thistle moves on your turn, and if you are mounted you use thistles movement. So, if thistle moves, you count as having moved. Theoretically thistle could move, and still allow you to draw your weapons. It just makes some sense, if you are directing them with your knees. Up to GM tho.
what in the world, why are there wolves? Did someone lead them? Doubtful...
Rydell draws his bow and fires a shot off at the lead one as they approach.
initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3

Ovril Necul Havayselvay |

The forum ate my post yesterday and oof, they aren't exactly working/cooperating today!
Uncertainty has clouded this day and rained on Ovril's parade ever since he left his wagon, but this, a group of young frothing wolves, well this takes the cake. It's fight or flight, and Ovril isn't about to get into the habit of running away from danger now.
with grace betraying hours of training, he lines up a shot with a javelin and waits for the wolves to come charging forth.
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Move action: draw javelin
Std action: 'ready' - and attack the first wolf to come within 30ft of Ovril, which triggers Point-Blank Shot
Javelin Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Javelin Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Shel |

Oh. Poor wolves. Shel thinks as the runty wolves come into view. They must be desperate for food. Sadly, the only thing that can be done for wild animals this far gone is to put then down. Unarmed and unarmored, Shel pulls her sling from her satchel. The interrupted nights rest had not allowed her to prepare spells this day, but she didn’t prepare combat spells unless she was intending on going out of town anyways.
Shel Initiative[/dice: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
I played in a game that used party based block initiative and the DM posted the enemy statblocks. It was great, most rounds of combat only took a single day. I think more is gained than lost from posting the statblocks; you lose some immersion but the players know what they’re actually doing in combat and can better describe their actions instead of rolling and waiting for the DM to describe what happens. Also Shel doesn’t have any level 1 spells since we were dragged out of bed.I’ve also been having trouble with the site the last couple days.

Phoenix the Magnificent |

Phoenix hops up on the cart next to Ryder and crows. ENEMY AT THE GATES! He plucks a feather from his tail and leans over Rydell, inserting the feather behind the half-elf’s ear. I grant you this powerful combat boon, pointy-eared one. Show them the fury of water!
Cast Guidance on Rydell, +1 to one D20 roll in the next minute, chosen before the roll is made. Phoenix can’t actually deliver spells yet, so Shel is the one who really casts the spell.

GMMichael |

Rory's detect magic did show there was magic involved in the paint. Universal magic and evocation magic
Combat Summary round 1
The wolves appeared ahead and the party reacted
Rory pulled his lance and moved slightly to the left and away. looking at the wolves and trying to figure out anything unusual and besides the fact they seem to be ignoring the other folk in town and heading straight toward the party, and the obvious foaming at the mouth...theres nothing unusual.
Rydell pulls his bow nd looses an arrow at the first Wolf an itsticks into the shoulder of the wolf
as The wolves continued to run into the open area between the buildings, Ovril through a javelin at the advancing beasts, and it stuck in the back of the lead wolf injuring it further.
Shel concentrated on the situation and Phoenix added help to Rydell's next strike.
Imara pulled her bow and fired an arrow as well. Her arrow went over the backs to be lost in the dirt of beyond themattack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 71d6 ⇒ 3
good time to tell you my house rule on recovering missile ammunition. Instead of rolling for recovery. if you hit, you can recover, if you miss you cant. easy.

Wolf #1 lunged at Thistle snapping at the older wolf. His jaws barely missing the mounts right front leg.
Wolf #2 continued past heading directly towards Shel attacking the Shaman with a frenzy. Shel dodged the snapping maw.
Wolf #3 rushed past Rory and Thistle heading for Rydell and snapped at the Ranger. but Rydell easily avoids the clumsy assault even though he has his bow in his hands.

Imara shakes her head in frustration as she overshoots the wolf. She moves closer to the one attacking Shel to position herself for melee if needed, then shoots a second time at the wolf.
This shot missed just as badly as the first, again shooting past the wolf and Imara looks at her bow wondering if perhaps it's damaged. A cursory glance reveals nothing of concern. She had recently given her longbow to a young recruit that was strapped for cash. I guess I'm not as well practiced with this cursed thing as I thought.

As the woves had passed Rory and thistle missed because of the speed of the younger wolves.
Ovril cursed another of the diseased wolves, using his Varisian heritage to his advantage.
Shel stepped back dropping her spear at her feet and pulling a sling and loading it.
Phoenix jumped onto the back of the wolf near Rydell. The wolf snapped at the chicken as it jumped forward but only grabbed air.
Rory dropped his lance and stabbed with his rapier, injuring the wolf to their front. Thistle grabbed a foreleg and snapped the bone as it fell to the earth...dead.
The wolf snapped another time ignoring Rydell and going after the intruder on its back, which made it more difficult to try and hit. adjusting AC by +2 circumstance bonus once again getting nothing but empty air as it spun and turned and snapped at the bird on its back

GMMichael |

Rydell brought the Elven Curve Blade around in a sweeping arc that bit deep into the neck of the wolf Phoenix was astride of. A gout of blood covered the chicken with the heated wolves blood.
Imara turned and fired an arrow at the remaining wolf, and busted a bow string, the arrow falling into the dirt at her feet. She pulled blades readying to move into melee.

Rory Cornelius |
Seeing his friend cleave the wolf, Rory calls out "Well Struck Rydel." Turning Thistle with his legs, he leans forward telling her "Ogu!" As Thistle bolts the short distance to the remaining Wolf he see's the chicken flapping about, yelling to the Half orc, "Shel it's not my fault if Thistle goes after that chicken while were in combat!" Fortunately Thistle charges the young wolf, biting at its neck while Rory thrusts his rapier at the beasts side. He feels the rapier pentrate the wolfs hide, even though Thistle is not able to get a good bite on the smaller animals neck.

Shel |

Shel steps away from the wolf to let the more martially inclined deal with it.
Not much Shel can do, I'm afraid. 5-foot-step away.

Phoenix the Magnificent |

Phoenix's beak falls open as he stares at his handiwork. His attack had practically severed the wolf's head from its body! I came down like a great tsunami and obliterated all who stood before me.

Ovril Necul Havayselvay |

With two of the three wolves dealt with, Ovril moves into a more advantageous position and throws another javelin at the lone survivor.

Rory spins and rushes at the remaining wolf Sticking his rapier in the hind quarters and hearing the rabid beast yelp and snarl. Though Thistle snapped and just got fur.
Shel backs up, still spinning the sling deciding not to loose a stone.
While Phoenix strutted on the body of the fallen wolf, blood dripping from feathers.
Ovril tosed a javelin into the fray but it went over the back to stick in the ground beyond., the force busting the javelin.
The remaining wolf ignored Shel and turned growling and snapping at Thistle and missed the mount.

Rydell runs over to the last wolf and brings down an overhand chop with the force of a typhoon, slicing the poor creature in half at the shoulder. Letting out all the frustration and worry that had been building up in one heavy stroke.

Imara Novoron |

Imara gapes at Rydell. "Whoa. I never doubted your skills, but...that was one incredible swing!" She lowers her blades, relieved that the fight is over and everyone seems alright, but also more than a little frustrated that she didn't help in any way.
Seeing that the immediate and obvious threat is taken care of, Imara glances around for any other signs of trouble.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

GMMichael |

The last wolf fell, cut in twain , by Rydell, blood shot all over the elf. The fight over the group glanced around...in less than 30seconds they had defeated their opponents. Several militia members were rushing over. A few townsfolk were coming over the guards at the gate were closing oneside of the entry gate. In case...per protocol.
The aftermath was taken up with a few questions by one of the corporals. Omast nor Kurst arrived on the scene.

Cham Laringfass |

Cham came running out as she could. Brining water and towels. oh my. That was most surprising. And unexpected. ...rabid wolves? Running through the gate? Oh my

Rory Cornelius |
Hey Shel, I don't know if you notice the map, Rory had moved giving you a flank with the wolf. Could have drawn you spear, attacked, then 5 ft step.
Watching as Shel moves back Rydel ducks as Ovril, javelin flies overhead. 'No wonder Shel moved back, she must have seen the cardplayer throw.' Drawing his rapier from the wolfs hindquarter he prepares to attack again, when Rydel cleaves the wolf in two with his elven blade. Relaxing in the saddle, using his knees, he turns Thistle away from the carcass. "Well done Rydel! Imara's right it was an incredible swing."
As Cham runs out of the Inn, Rory dismounts, accepting one of the towels. He wipes his blade then Thistles muzzle, hoping whatever the three wolves had wasn't contagious. "Yes, quite a surprise." He turns to the others as he draws the note out for Thistle to smell again. "Do we continue with the investigation? Or determine where these wolves came from first?"

Shel |

”They were only sick.” Shel says, looking over the emaciated forms and letting her arm and the sling held in her hand drop to her side. ”Starvation makes animals do desperate things. Someone should take a survey of the nearby wolf packs to make sure this disease hasn’t spread or the wolves will need to be culled.” She says to no one in particular.

Phoenix the Magnificent |

With Phoenix’s blessing of raging water flowing through his veins, the half-elf was able to overcome the final wolf. Phoenix’s own attack against his wolf had left it barely recognizable as a once-living creature. The hero bird spreads his wings and crows his victory to the whole city. I AM THE GOD OF WAR! He did not expect thanks from his flock; it was his job to protect them. He struts up and down the battlefield, head bobbing with each step.

Imara Novoron |

Once she determines there is no longer any immediate threat, Imara slams her dagger and her sword into their sheaths. She turns on her heel and walks away from the group, kicking at her discarded shortbow as she passes it. She continues around the corner of the building and out of sight.
Rydell and Rory have likely seen her do this type of thing before when she is particularly unhappy with her performance in a fight or practice session. She typically returns to the group fairly quickly, but is often in a foul mood for at least the next several hours.

Shel |

"Oh. Not sick?" Shel kneels near one of the wolves and pokes it. "Maybe they were pushed out of their territory by a larger predator. Was anyone injured, Cham? Phoenix, go to the upper level and see if there's anything interesting outside the city."

Phoenix the Magnificent |

Phoenix is too busy with his war dance to hear Shel. He was hopping from one foot to the other, clucking with each hop, wings spread wide.

Rory Cornelius |
Hearing Shel declare the wolves 'not sick' Rory dismounts "Guess we should take a closer look." and inspects the wolves, while Thistle smells them. Going from one wolf to the other, turning them over and carefully inspecting them. Looking for any clues that may tell of the wolves; whether they are wild or half tamed.

Looking for any evidence that may indicate if they were wild or trained, or what may have sent them this way.
knowledge(nature): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

GMMichael |

Rory dismounts and kneels besides Shel as they start looking over the bodies carefully. With all of the blood it's no easy task. Yes soon they notice mottle baskin discoloration under the fur...definitely sick. And collar marks and trimmed toenails and no briars air brambles or parasites that might indicate being in the wild for a prolonged period.
So sick yet domesticated. Trained.

Cham Laringfass |

Cham looks over the group and goes down to the gate where Agrit already has arrived and talking to the gate guards who take the carcass outside the gate and push it to the side of the 4th.
She returns and says no noone injurred
