GM Hawthwile |
First off, thank you all for being willing to come on an adventure with me! Now, to business.
Expectations
- I will post every day. I hope everyone can post every weekday and at least once over the weekend, but stuff happens - which leads me to:
- I will bot you if we haven't heard from you in 24 hours. Please include botting instructions in your character profile, or I will have to get creative in the most entertaining (for me) way possible. Please also let me know if you are expecting an extended period of absence so I can PM you and preemptively hash out major decision points to keep the story moving. On a related note:
- I will make "reactive" rolls to keep the story moving along. If you want to make a roll as part of an action/decision/etc, please do so. I might modify the skill used or add circumstantial bonuses/penalties based on circumstances. Which brings me to my final point:
- I will happily add circumstantial bonuses (or penalties) for roleplaying. I hope, for example, that you will accompany your diplomacy check with what your character is actually saying. It makes it so much easier for me to respond if you give me material, and we make such a more fulfilling and exciting story together.
If you're worried or concerned about any of these expectations, or about anything related to this game, post it here or PM me. We can figure something out so you have a good time.
In addition to making “reactive” rolls for characters, I also like to roll Knowledge checks for players so we don't have to wait for a back-and-forth between player and GM. To that end, I tailor what a character might remember about a creature. (For example, a fighter will probably care more about a golem’s DR while a wizard would remember that it’s immune to spells and an alchemist is super excited that it blows up when it dies.) Let me know what your character is most concerned about with an opponent - otherwise, I'll use my best judgement. If this will be a problem for you, let me know (either here or via PM) and we’ll work something out.
We’ll be using block initiative during encounters. Actions will be resolved in the order that they were posted in. While this can do some weird things with a single character acting "twice" before another, it is easier for both players and GM to track the sequence of events this way. I highly encourage tactics such as:
McSwordFace waits until her friend Blessings Galore has a chance to cast a buff before she attacks the horrible people kicking puppies.
Sword of Justice: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 (+ buff if applicable)
Justice damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 (+ buff if applicable)
I will happily calculate the final result in these cases. This helps us work effectively as a team even if posting schedules don’t line up in a beneficial way.
Since this game is part of a multi-table special, we will be moving at an especially quick pace. One thing I have found very handy in previous scenarios like this is a place for players and GM to communicate rapidly - posting notices of who is up in initiative or asking for a clarification on something. I've used Discord and GoogleHangouts for this before and have a slight preference for Discord, but is there one platform you would prefer over the other? If so, let me know below!
If your post is entirely out of character (OOC), let’s put it here instead of in the Gameplay thread.
About Me: I’ve done a bit of PFS and PbP GMing, but I am certainly not perfect. If you have ideas for how I could do something better, a disagreement with a decision, or confusion over what I’m saying, please let me know via the Discussion thread or PM.
For your first post here, please use the Reply option on the following post, delete the [quote'] tags, and fill in the provided fields. And be sure to pop over to the Gameplay thread and introduce your character!

Slow Tracking? (Y/N):
Day Job (please roll now):
Special Notes/Abilities: Please replace this text with anything unusual about your character here, such as “I always deal non-lethal damage and use the Enforcer feat to demoralize as a free action” or “I ride a Huge serpent mount, but it’s got both the Narrow Frame feat and a Belt of the Weasel so it can fit through a 5-ft hallway easily.” This will help both you as a player not have to type the same thing over and over again and me as the GM prepare so the game runs more smoothly.
Lai Tsuan |
Player Name: Watery Soup
Character Name: Lai Tsuan
PFS Number: 2358909-4
Faction: Exchange
Slow Tracking? (Y/N): N
Day Job (please roll now): Profession (Cartographer): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Special Notes/Abilities: In Tien culture, the family name is the first name and the given name is the last name. She should be addressed as Tsuan, not Lai.
Mythryndyr |
Player Name: Otha
Character Name: Mythryndyr
PFS Number: 239913-2
Faction: Liberty’s Edge
Slow Tracking? (Y/N): No
Day Job (please roll now): Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Special Notes/Abilities: Nothing extraordinary. Myth’s got the Deadeye Bowman trait along with the Evasion and Uncanny Dodge abilities; his favored enemy is Undead +2.
Looking forward to playing in another special under you.
Floria Avernathus |
I signed up with Floria as I expected her current game to be done by now, unfortunately the GM has been having some health issues and hasn't posted in a month. There's still a chance she might be ready, but if not I have a level 6 monk (Jayagrahama Chakar) who I could use instead, assuming that's OK?
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
Greetings, GM Hawthwile, glad to be playing at your table again, even if Jamir is a goody-goody!
Player Name: Tusk the Half-Orc
Character Name: Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay
Class and Level: Swashbuckler (Mouser) 5/Halfling Opportunist 1
PFS #: 199504-5
Faction: Liberty's Edge
Slow Track: No
Day Job Roll: Profession (sailor): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Initiative: One benefit of the Mantle of the Black Rider boon is that it gives Jamir a +2 bonus to initiative once per day; for play-by-post games in which the GM rolls initiative, I think it will be simplest to apply this bonus to Jamir’s first initiative roll in the scenario.
Trap Spotter: If Jamir is within 10 ft of a trap, the GM rolls a Perception check to determine whether he notices it.
Immediate actions: Jamir has several options for immediate actions during combat, depending on the actions of his opponent. He is most likely to use the swashbuckler deeds Dodging Panache and Underfoot Assault (each of which costs 1 panache point) and the halfling opportunist ability Exploitive Maneuver (full descriptions on Jamir’s profile page). Generally, I’ll make the decision about what to use when the time comes; but because Dodging Panache can change an opponent’s hit against Jamir into a miss, please assume that if Jamir has 2 or more panache points and is not threatened by any opponent other than the attacker, he will use Dodging Panache if an opponent would otherwise hit him with an attack.*
Regaining Panache: Jamir regains a point of panache when he confirms a critical hit or when he scores the killing blow (reducing opponent to 0 hp or below). A crit is usually unambiguous, but in PbP it isn’t always clear whose attack takes down the opponent and usually doesn’t matter. If Jamir has spent panache and might regain a point depending on the order in which attacks are resolved, I’m likely to ask if he’s the one who struck the final blow. I apologize in advance if that creates extra work - I will try not to be annoying about it, but it’s part of how the class works.
*Hawthwile - this is my usual write-up for Jamir. I did read your note that you prefer to have players make "reactive" rolls in advance on our turns or roll them yourself; I'll try to do them on my turns, or at least post in a spoiler what I would like to do if certain conditions are met.

No worries - I am certain Jayagrahama is just as lovely an individual as Floria (even if I know I’m going to mess up the spelling of that name at some point, lol).
Jamir, a spoiler with likely reactions sounds excellent. Because we’ll be resolving actions by posting order within an initiative block, there should be little confusion or extra work to determine if conditions for regaining panache are met.
Pai Shecks |
Player Name: Warah
Character Name: Pai Shecks
PFS Number: 289224-1
Faction: Liberty's Edge
Slow Tracking? (Y/N): N
Day Job (please roll now): Profession (artisan): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Special Notes/Abilities: Pai can fly now! All the time! And she's gonna! (Unless there's wind or something.) She likes to get into a position that allows her to blast foes from 30 ft away so she can use her Point Blank Shot bonus. Her preference is to stay in one spot so she can Gather Power to mitigate the Burn cost for using the equivalent of Empower Spell (Metakinesis ability). She likes to think she's totally intimidating, and she's willing to give anything a try. Please note that she starts each day by taking 1 point of Burn to activate her Enveloping Winds, bumping the miss chance for projectile weapons to 25%.
I am not on Discord; Google Hangouts would work better for me.

Thanks. This is my first scenario since taking a level of Halfling Opportunist - It looks a little complicated, but I’ve been looking forward to trying out the class since Jamir’s first adventure.

Thanks, he will answer to Jay :). I will hold off checking in for a few days to see if I get Floria's chronicle as I'd rather play her and she seems a better fit for the group, but I'll definitely be signed in by the end of the weekend.
Discord would be my preference for IM type solution
Mattaius Ash |
Player Name: Lee C
Character Name: Mattaius Ash
PFS Number: 262096-3
Faction: Liberties Edge
Slow Tracking? (Y/N): N
Day Job (please roll now): Profession (Gambler): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Special Notes/Abilities: Ranged weapon returns immediately (Ricochet Toss), BaB equals level for the purposes of Warpriest feats.
Floria Avernathus |
Player Name: Tom G
Character Name: Floria Avernathus
PFS Number:213261-5
Faction:Sovereign Court
Slow Tracking? (Y/N): N
Day Job (please roll now):Craft (clothing): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
Special Notes/Abilities: Floria casts Ant Haul at the start of the adventuring day, so if she's still at it 12 hours later she'll need to re-up it with another spell slot or be encumbered. She is an abomination psychic so has a sort of psychic rage
Lai Tsuan |
Hi GM/party, I just wanted to let you know that I won't be joining the Google Hangouts channel regularly, and may not join at all.
If you need to get in touch with me on short notice, posting in the thread is probably the best way, followed by PM, followed by E-mail. I can check all of those from my phone, so I tend to check a lot during 5-10 minute breaks here and there.
Pai Shecks |
Did we make a decision on which platform to use? Looking back at the responses, there's only one vote for each option.
GM Hawthwile |
That's true, but with Pai not on Discord I'd hate for you to have to create an account just for that (while I believe any email address works for Google Hangouts). In any case, the Hangout has been created and is linked at the top of the page. I'll mostly be using it for messages like "We're in initiative" and "Up next: Pai, Tsuan, and Floria!".
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
Is the rubble on the map between the party and the arena with the snakeman and dino difficult terrain?
GM Hawthwile |
The map doesn't say, but it would make sense for it to be difficult terrain. So we'll go with 'Yes, a square that is mostly (more than half) filled with rubble is difficult terrain'.

Got it, thanks.
Pai Shecks |
FYI: Remote school starts today. So far it's been one technical snafu after another, so I'm having to spend a lot of time managing that for 4 kids. My availability to post today may be impacted.

**HOUSE GM ANNOUNCEMENT**
Thanks in part to the efforts of Pathfinder agents, a slave revolt is now spreading like wildfire throughout the lower regions of the complex!
GMs, the Slave Pits (Area B) are now controlled, and the Slave Revolt condition is now in effect (see the ‘Development’ section on Page 16)
Whoo-Hoo! Jamir’s going to get to check a box for liberating slaves on his faction journal card!
GM Hawthwile |
Woohoo! We have an Aid Token! And better yet, it's extra-strong because of how you all helped free and inspire the slave revolution - meaning the benefits from the Aid Token act as if you were in the [7-8] tier rather than the [5-6]. So let's use this one quickly and send it back out into the world so other tables can also benefit from this awesome boost!
Lai Tsuan |
Only in the spellcasting aid is there an actual difference between [5-6] and [7-8]
*Debbie Downer music plays*
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
I apologize for going silent - I have been completely underwater with work the past couple of days. I will try to catch up later tonight (I'm on US Central time, currently UTC -5), but should be mostly back to normal by midday tomorrow.
Pai Shecks |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Breathing comes first. Sleep is up there too. PBP comes sometime after that. Do what you gotta do, then come play when you can. :)
Lai Tsuan |
Out of curiosity, was there any way to turn off the darkness from the top of the altar, or was Tsuan pretty much condemned to being totally useless up there?
GM Hawthwile |
It would have run out after about three more minutes, but the darkness was on the altar itself and not a stone or anything nearby.
GM Hawthwile |
Yeah, Lady Arodeth is a lvl 12 character. Fighting her at your level would be... problematic.
I do think it's cool how this scenario doesn't try to scale her between subtiers, but that means the lower-level tables are "highly encouraged to retreat if she responds violently".
Pai Shecks |
Yeah! Don't water it down. If she is powerful enough to do all this, it'd be ridiculous to assume she's at a lower tier.
GM Hawthwile |
I played this tier. It was terrifying!
Did your table try to press the fight, TOZ?
Grandmaster TOZ |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Oh goodness no. The dino crit our barbarian to death in the first fight and left us with three PCs to limp through the entire scenario.
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |

That’s rough on the survivors (and a short day for the barbarian’s player).
GM Hawthwile |
Sorry folks, not enough spoons today. I'll try to get us moving in the morning.
GM Hawthwile |
Alright, end-of-scenario business:
Day Jobs: If you have an unused folio/shirt/etc reroll and would like to use it for you Day Job check, please do so now.
Verify Reporting Information: Please take a moment to review your earlier post in this thread with your character's reporting information and let me know if anything needs to be changed/updated.
Boons: It's a convention, which means there's a chance to get a boon simply for playing! To see if you're a lucky winner, please do the following:
- Roll a d20 in this thread.
- If the result of that roll is 19 or 20, you've won a boon!
-- Roll a d3 to determine which boon.
-- Send me your email address of choice (either in your post or via PM) so the convention staff can get your boon to you.
Yep, reporting info looks good! I already used my folio reroll to defeat the evil snake-man, so day job is good to go.
Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 7 (For example purposes, we'll pretend this was a 20 - and because we don't want to hurt McSwordyFace's feelings)
Which Boon?: 1d3 ⇒ 3Wahoo! I'll send you my email address via PM as soon as I finish this post!
In addition, I'm always looking to improve my GMing and would love to hear your feedback. What was fun, what was frustrating, what was meh - either here or in a PM is fine by me.
And most importantly, thanks for playing! This was a very fun table and I'm very happy to have met (or re-met, as the case may be) all of you!
Floria Avernathus |
Woohoo we made it, thanks GM Hawthwile for such a fun game, and thanks to the other players for making it fun!
Boon: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Lai Tsuan |
Thanks for running!
BBQ Pork Boon: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Aiyah!
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
Jamir already used his reroll, so the day job is what it is.
Boooooooon!: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Thanks for running this, Hawthwile - it was a pleasure to sit at one of your tables again. And thank you Mythryndyr, Tsuan, Floria, Pai, and Mattaius - I enjoyed role-playing with your terrific characters and look forward to seeing you at another table sometime soon.
Pai Shecks |
I second sixth the many thanks for running this scenario for us. It's always fun to play with folks who lean into role playing and a GM who makes sure there's space for that to happen.
Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 10
GM Hawthwile |
Aww, thank you everyone! Chronicle sheets have been finished and can be downloaded here. Grab yours, take a look and make sure nothing needs to be corrected, and let me know you've got it. I'll keep this thread open for another week or until everyone has gotten their chronicle.
And one last thing before I can report the game...
Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Which Boon?: 1d3 ⇒ 1
(This feels highly unfair, but I don't make the rules... XD)
Mythryndyr |
Mine looks good too. Thanks again, GM, enjoyed playing another special under you; at least this time, I didn't end up mostly dead. :)
Floria Avernathus |
All good here thanks
