DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

So I almost killed my meat space party last night, lol. Sent them up against a Leng slaver boat, and the dice rolls were not in their favor. They were smart enough to indulge in a tactical retreat. And they did rescue their employer who had been kidnapped. So it was placed in the ‘win’ column.

Heh,

Yeh, being 'old school', it seemed like our mind set was always "We kill it!" or 'It kills us!' for those old, original modules. (Especially some of the 3rd party modules, Sheesh! I hated the ones that had puzzles that the PLAYERS (not the PC) had to solve, or you were stuck)

We MAY have had some strategy involved, but that strategy was always "ATTACK!" ;P

Now that I'm more mature, (HAH! I almost said that with a straight face!)
I truly appreciate the art of the strategic retreat. Especially if you can still achieve the original objective! Win-Win! :)

And I have yet to see any strategy that could stand up to a few bad dice rolls. ;P

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

The after action report basically went like this:

On the DM side:
5e has a CR problem. It is hard to figure out the proper threat level
I failed to take into account that we were down a player. Only four characters in residence, and many of them are no charoped

On the players side:
Split the party. I mean, that’s just textbook stupid ‍*facepalm*
Went in guns blazing with little or no recon
Split the party a SECOND time (so the party had three distinct battles going on. Did I mention there were only FOUR PCs?)

On the plus side, fireball covers retreat, slave ship burns, dimension door is your friend, a suddenly-remembered magic item saves a PC, and DM ignored a special attack that likely would have killed them all. TPK averted!

Yes, please. Dungeon Master Player 15/Dungeon Master 13/Monk 2(I'm out of practice!)

Mm. I maintain there is a difference between splitting up the party and going rushing off into danger by oneself without telling anyone where you are going or why.

Still, Split the party + down one PC = <Facepalm> ;P

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

They survived. That’s the important thing. Plus I got to try out the Leng boys. They proved they are a handful

Leng,... isn't that the Lovecraft-inspired stuff?
O_o

O_o

Yup. Seven Denizens of Leng, their moon calf captain, two blood orchid guardians, and a sentient ship.

I do not know lovecraftian stuff THAT well.

But KNOWING that it is Lovecraft makes it sound,... unpleasant. :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

You got a taste of Lovecraft with the Shoggoth you guys met in the sewer

<Shudder>
Yeah, THAT I recall. Even a baby Shoggoth is nothing to sneeze at! O_o

<The sound,.. THE SOUND!!!> ;P

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

So anybody watching Lovecraft Country on HBO? Intense show

I did not know about that show, not having HBO I have missed some interesting shows.

Depends on how it is done, I might not want to watch it if its too intense. ;P

I don't mind 'scary' shows, but I don't enjoy being scared like some people do. :)

Yeah, I'm an old wuss.

On the other hand, even though I'm not a 'fan' of horror movies, I have watched and even enjoyed a few.
Actually really liked 'Zombieland' for example. But that one was more making fun of zombie movies than anything.
PLus, I got to see cousin Woody kick Zombie bu##! what's not to love?!? :)

(Yes, as best I have been able to determine, Woody Harrelson is supposedly to be a cousin. 2nd or 3rd twice-removed or something. So yes, we're related, and no, he doesn't know I exist!) ;P

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Yeah, I have the exact same thing with Jane Curtin of SNL fame. Family legend says we are cousins somehow, but I never understood exactly how.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

So I discovered I own a bunch of rare expensive dice. Who knew?

That's cool.

2 questions?
How did you come by these 'rare and expensive dice'?
And
How did you discover that they were 'rare and expensive'?

Um,... HOW rare and expensive? Are you a 'Dice-illionaire'?!? ;P

(Asking for a friend. Seriously. I have a friend that collects dice. Like Fishing-tackle boxes full of dice. HE might have some of these too!) ;)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

They are Chessex dice. About a decade ago I bought two of their Pound of Dice bulk dice sets to fill a glass fish as a kind of fun thing for a display. There’s a Facebook page called Dice Goblins I joined for fun. I found out that dice collecting is a Thing now. These Chessex dice are a decade old, and a lot of the older sets aren’t made anymore. Certain sets are selling for over $200!

Now my dice aren’t ALL valuable, but through some research, I believe the initial $40 investment is now likely worth 7-800. Not to bad of a return. Now I just have to find buyers.

THAT is funny! And pretty cool.

Yep, no matter what they're worth, they are worthless if you can't someone willing to PAY for them,... If you were so inclined as to sell,... ;P

I'll have to let my friend know.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

The thirst on that page for my dice is real. They were drooling. One guy gave me $40 already for one dice :D

LOL!

Keep it up, and you'll be rolling in dice, AND money! ;)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Lol just sold a couple for $120 $$$$$

OMGosh I find that hysterical.

I told my friend last night about this. (We Skype while we play online games, usually Champions Online or STO or SWO)

I forgot how much dice he HAS. he bought several bags of 'Chessex' back in the day I think. And he also mentioned another popular brand o dice from then (that I cant recall the name of now)

He figures if Chessex are that popular now, he wonders if the other brand might be the same or even more so? O_o

Well, crud. And here I am packratting junk that years later turns out to be,...

Well,... still Junk. :P

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Tell him to look up ‘Wild purple’. Mother of Pearl (blue or white), aqeurple, and royal purple Borealis. See if he has any of those.

OK, I'll tell him Thx!

Dayam.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

I guess crystal castle old stuff is valuable too

Oh, and any of those cheap plastic dice that came with the first edition boxes? They’re valuable too now

1 person marked this as a favorite.

They can't have my icosahedron d10!

Wow,
I actually STILL have the cheap, green plastic dice that came with my first ed boxed D&D set! (The one that came with the adventure 'The Keep on the Borderlands')

They are worn on the edges, (Did I mention they were cheap?) And they came with a darker green crayon for coloring in the numbers on the faces so you could see them. But I still have them in my dice bag.

Amazing. One man's junk really IS another man's treasure! :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Still got all the pieces in that box??

Ratty box for big bucks

Patrick Curtin wrote:

Yes I do. (I may even have the crayon, if it hasnt melted?!) ;P

I thought my box was red? But I may be getting it confused with other old box sets I have. And the rest of the contents look familiar.

Wow. I may have to reconsider my packrat-ism. ;P

I used to be a fervid collector. Now I am trying to divest myself of encumbrances. Owning things can be a burden. So I’ve been selling my collection over the past five years. I’ve probably realized close to $10K so far. No kidding, some of that stuff is highly sought after. Our little hobby is mainstream, and the newcomers love that old stuff

Silver Crusade

Male Celestial Cleric of Myself 10/Radiant Servant of Me 10

Rags, you may be thinking of the revised edition red box published in 1983. The one Patrick linked was the original from 1977/1978.

So cool, :)

I REALLY should start 'letting go' of some of my 'stuff', you know, while I still am able to do it myself. :P
(Old wizzie aint getting any younger!) >_<

Heck, maybe I can use it to (help) build an actual nest egg instead of the piddly I have so far. :P

OK, That is possible. Or I'm thinking of an 'AD&D' red box? (I have several boxes and books of Various D&D products.)

Although, I did get my original box set in middle school, so BEFORE the reprint in 1983, (I graduated HS in 1984) SO I'm likely just getting the boxes confused. And I probably do have the one that he pictured above. :)

Either way,.... COOL!

I really should go and do something about all that stuff,... :P

That’s my thought. When I got divorced, it weighed on me (physically and mentally) all the things I had collected for 40 years. I had to triage, and I lost a lot of stuff, and other stuff I sold for pennies. Now, I am playing a long game. All the books I use are now available digitally . I don’t want to get elderly, go somewhere and not have room for my books, and then go into a yard sale for 10 cents because my daughter has no clue what is valuable. Now I get much needed money and less stuff cluttering up my apartment.

Plus, I just sold ANOTHER set of five for $70 (you said your friend had those Chessex Pound of Dice- have him look up ‘speckled popcorn’. They were exclusively for PoD and that’s what sold for $70)

Well I'm glad ONE of us has learned how to 'let it go' ;P

One of these days I'll join the smart people club, and downsize my stuff collection.

Or, at least, trade the 'stuff' I have for different stuff, hopefully ? ;P

And wow. O_O Yeah I'm beginning to wish I had bought some pound o dice back in the day,... ;P

I'll tell him, thanks!

Everyone told me I was nuts for taking an indefinite leave of absence from university. Who's nuts now? Guess I really am older and wiser. Go figure, eh?

So is this a real PbP, or just the Top Sneaky new FAWTL?

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Top sneaky FAWTL.

I became disillusioned with my attempt to make an OTD alternative to FAWTL because, being the OTD, everyone feels entitled to post. And if I want a little chat thread, I wanna be able to tell people to get lost. Which I can’t enforce in the OTD. But here it is an OOC thread. You don’t post on people’s OOC threads without an invite

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

The advert for the PbP game is real though
