Present

GM supervillan |

Gameplay thread is open for dotting and / or introductions (no rush).
Have any of your present characters played scenarios 1-51 (City of Strangers 1 - the shadow gambit) or 1-52 (City of Strangers 2 - the twofold demise)?

![]() |

I'm here...and hoping to be done in a couple of weeks with the Harrowing. I think we will; we're in the dragon's palace and I think our next encounter will be with him. I'll be 9th level, if I survive...
Yeah, I've played those, but not with this character...

Lady Ladile |

*peeks in*
Hello! GM supervillan mentioned that you guys were looking for a 6th to join your mini-campaign and encouraged me to check in. I don't have a big selection of characters that could join but I do have two options and would be happy to play either one:
Cleric 8 (Ecclesitheurge of Shelyn)
U.Summoner 7/Fighter (Dragoon) 1
My cleric is a caster cleric with a focus on support/utility and my summoner is small and does the mounted combat thing atop a flying eidolon. I'm also aware that we'll likely be playing up and so things will be more dangerous than usual, but I'm willing to accept the risk if you guys don't mind having a lowbie along :)
Oh and I've not played either of the City of Strangers scenarios.

GM supervillan |

We'll start once Daedin finishes the Harrowing.
With Seldanna levelled to 11 and Daedin levelled to 9, APL looks like (10+11+11+8+9+8)/6 = 9.5
In this case, you decide whether to round up to 10, or down to 9. If you round up you'll play high tier. If you round down, you'll play high tier but with the 4-player adjustment. I recommend taking that 4-player adjustment.

![]() |

I should mention this now. I am tentatively scheduled to move in late-July. If it happens then (virus effects pending), I expect some disruption to my posting schedule. It certainly could be delayed, but that just means the disruption moves to August or later.
I'm still committed to playing and will make efforts to do regular posting during that time, but I'm also certain frequency or quality will suffer.
I'm fine with the 4 player adjustment.
Hi, Ladile! I think either would be welcome. We might have more need for the melee and summons since I don't think we have a big fighter-type.

![]() |

Quiella can tank pretty well but against non-evil opponents her damage output is only so-so.
I would rather play up, personally, but won't object to playing down.
I have not played the City of Secrets scenarios

GM supervillan |

The choice is high tier, or high tier with 4 player adjustment Quiella. I'd say only forgo the 4 player adjustment if you want a much harder challenge, it won't change the rewards any.

![]() |

Yay! The legendary Lady Ladile. Happy to share a table with whomever you bring.
I'm good with a 4 player adjustment.
At 32 xp, I feel like a movie cop who is like a week from retirement. No need for extra trouble. Lol.

![]() |

Aw shucks... :)
Since it sounds like the general consensus is neutral-to-summoner leaning, I decided to go ahead and dot in with Nina here. She's got a good chunk of change to spend so I'll be looking over some purchases for her to hopefully help boost her survivability and effectiveness a bit more before we get started.
4-player adjustment is fine with me.

![]() |

Thanks for the clarification. 4 player adjustment is fine with me.
Really happy to be playing with you, Ladile!

Just an update...looks like the finale with the dragon is imminent...so providing he survives it, Daedin should be available soon...sorry for the delay...

GM supervillan |

No worries. I've still got to prepare my slides, plus I want to do a bit of background reading :)
Btw, Daedin and Fendel you're both currently using the same avatar. Could one of you switch before we start please?

![]() |

I have run into the icon/avatar problem once before.
Do you want the icon/avatar switched here? If it will be a map problem, I can just re-color mine to grey or black.

GM supervillan |

I prefer that the avatars are switched on the board, that way we avoid the potential for confusion over who's posting.

![]() |

Yep, finished the succubi encounter and the dragon has made his presence known...so that encounter will start as soon as we buff up and enter...
Fendel, I’ll change avatars once I finish the Harrowing...

![]() |

Another update...
We're fighting the baddie...and I think it'll only last another round or two...but Daedîn's getting his a...err...butt kicked. The baddie apparently has a very high AC; I rolled a natural 19/total 35 on my first/sneak attack...and missed...it's gone a little better since...

GM supervillan |

If you're done in time I might be able to get us started this weekend - though early/mid next week is more likely.

GM supervillan |

OK, slides are ready to go (link at top of page - and I will add it to my GM avatar header).
Daedin once you've levelled up and have switched avatar I will kick us off in Gameplay.
A note on how I handle pets and initiative (since we have 3): I roll separately for Initiative and (where appropriate) Perception. Mounts will ordinarily delay until their rider's initiative if the mount rolls higher - however both mounts in this party are intelligent creatures so if their players want them to act immediately on the rolled initiative they may do so.
I use block initiative.
Seldanna, I know that Lonan is generally non-combatant. Let me know if he's in a familiar satchel - in the hood of your robes he is still exposed to AoEs.

![]() |

Just got the Chronicle. I’ll have him updated tomorrow and change his avatar; although the only other avatar that really fits might remind you of another Elven archer of mine...

![]() |

@GM - Noted! Generally, Inky will indeed delay until Nina's initiative comes up. If something with that should change, I'll definitely speak up and let you know.

![]() |

The Animal companion ruling may sometimes prove inconvenient for Quiella. Sérié will likely default to the Defend truck, which would effectively be a delay... But if there is an enemy adjacent to Quiella at the beginning of a combat, Sérié will probably attack it before Quiella has a chance to tell her to do otherwise.
I'll live with it though

GM supervillan |

I'm happy with a default trick Quiella - but Defend isn't delay, it's more like 'ready to attack anything threatening the person I'm defending.'
What do you prefer Sérié does as a default action?

![]() |

Defend (DC 20): The animal defends you (or is ready to defend you if no threat is present), even without any command being given. Alternatively, you can command the animal to defend another specific character.
In practice this feels to me like "attack something if it is nearby; otherwise do nothing (delay)"
I'm not aware of a trick that is better suited to being a default. I don't see one in [irl=https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/handle-animal/]this list[/url].

GM supervillan |

"attack something if it is nearby; otherwise do nothing (delay)"
Defend is like that - but the case that you say presents a difficulty for you seems to be "there is an adjacent enemy at the start of combat", in which case yes, Defend trick results in the companion attacking: "attack something if it is nearby" as you put it.
Am I right in thinking that what you want Sérié to do in combat is 'nothing until she gets an order'? If so, delaying as per my earlier post would seem to achieve that and I'm not sure what the potential inconvenience is?

![]() |

I guess I'm not sure by RAW that animal companions do "nothing until given an order." If they are trained (and all ACs are) then isn't their behavior dictated by a trick?

GM supervillan |

So your concern is that the Defend trick may sometimes cause Sérié to make an attack when you'd rather she wait till you give a command, but you think that this is correct RAW and don't see an alternative default?
If you don't want Sérié to act before you, default to Heel: "The animal follows you closely, even to places where it normally wouldn’t go."
I see no reason why Heel shouldn't work whilst you're mounted - it means she won't move until you direct her, and she won't attack. Functionally this will allow her to delay for you.

![]() |

That makes sense.

GM supervillan |

OK, we are go! Gameplay is open, post away!
Second your Ref save looks to be 2 points too high, unless I've missed something.

![]() |

Seldanna, I know that Lonan is generally non-combatant. Let me know if he's in a familiar satchel - in the hood of your robes he is still exposed to AoEs.
I'll take that as a subtle warning and purchase a familiar satchel for him before the game.

![]() |

Speaking of purchases:
Talisman of Freedon, lesser: {900}
Animal Mask: {2700}
First Aid Gloves: {4500}
Total spent: {8100}

GM supervillan |

Teric I missed that you have a familiar too. Is Darla ever likely to be not-a-tattoo when combat breaks out?
Fendel what type of animal mask are you selecting? (Looks like it's mostly a cosmetic choice, only affecting whether you gain a bite or a gore attack).

![]() |

Nope, there's really no reason for Darla to be out of her tattoo form after the initial briefing. Maybe scouting, but iffy even then.

![]() |

Wolf.
And honestly, I hoe never have to use the bite attack. I just want access to Scent.

![]() |

Quiella will have life link up on
Sèrié
Nina
Teric
Incandescense
Unless someone objects
