NB: Swimming 30 feet up isn't an automatic success for everyone in the party.
Yeah, I'm viewing it as a calculated risk. If we're holding our breath, that gives us 8+ rounds of swimming to roll high enough to surface.

Taking off armor and/or fix a rope to the stairway so people can pull themselves up might be smarter. Really don't want to complicate this 'challenge' with a string of bad rolls.

I'd have Cloudia participate but shes deaf and has no idea what the plan is, even though I suggested it ooc.

Aw man I made a joke about the crocodile incident on Friday but the website ate it :(
Aurus casts Expeditious Retreat on himself and then attempts to climb the stairs so he can drop a rope down.
Athletics, climb 15 ft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Athletics, climb 15 ft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Athletics, climb 15 ft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

The walls are natural rock (DC25) wall ND slippery(DC+5), so climbing them isn't going to work. Throwing a grappling hook might be a better idea. Also, if someone takes off their armor it might indeed be smart to replace it with an arcane substitute.

Cloudia watches with a confounded look on her face as Aurus attempts to scrabble up the smooth wall.
"Is he bespelled?"
Cloudia does have mage hand which may be used to move up to 10 pounds which would accommodate a silk rope and an anytool/grappling hook."

![]() |

100% forgot I had a grappling hook and silk rope. *facepalm*
Aurus takes out his now-damp rope and grappling hook and tries to throw the hook up to the stairs.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
and if that fails then Cloudia should be able to see what Aurus is trying to do and try to cast Mage Hand

GM Auke |

After some difficult planning Aurus gets out his grappling hook and together with Cloudia's mage hand a rope is tied to the 30 feet higher staircase. Riceak takes off his armor and motions to Cloudia that he would like a mage armor (which I assume Cloudia gladly gives).
Aurus and Nemrok then pull the two levers at the same time and two slabs move and water quickly fills the cavern to the level of the stairs.
Without armor weighing people down everyone can easily swim (take ten) to the stairs. (I'm assuming Aurus keeps his Mithral Breastplate on as it only has a -1 penalty)
You are now all on the stairs just behind the closed door.

Confirmation of Mage Armor casting!
"Well how about that! It WAS just a matter of math."
Cloudia still has no idea that her voice is being drowned out by the celestial chanting so it would probably take someone with pretty good hearing to know what she said. She eyes the door at the top of the stairs and starts sloshing forward wishing she could do that handy dandy cleaning spell some of the other pathfinders like to show off at the mess hall after a food fight. Cheaters! Though the mage hand spell has come in quite handy during a food fight too!

![]() |

Aurus stands at the closed door and makes a motion to the other Pathfinders to let him know when to open the door.

![]() |

Cloudia whispers back to Aurus "I'm ready", figuring the hand motions were being used to indicate that they should be quiet.

GM Auke |

As soon as everyone is ready Aurus opens the door.
Crudely carved stonework expands into a dank circular chamber. Twin torches on both the eastern and western ends of the cavern illuminate a large stone slab that resides in the northern portion of the chamber. Littering the area around the slab are all manner of strange offerings, ranging from chipped skulls, ancient coins, strange pearls, crude tools, and broken pieces of art. Among all the treasures on the makeshift altar, the largest item appears to be an open tome of the most immaculate bone-white shade. From the tome comes an earshattering hymn—a chorus which sings the most beautiful of melodies.
A creature with the torso of a man, but with tentacles from the waste down stands behind the altar reading along with the hymns. He looks up as the door opens, but then looks back at the book.

From the waist up, cecaelias resemble humans with agile but muscular builds. Their eye, hair, and skin coloring tends to mimic that of surfacers in nearby communities; this natural adaptive trait allows them to more easily form social bonds with neighbors. Instead of humanoid legs, cecaelias have eight cephalopod tentacles that allow them to move quickly both on land and underwater. Cecaelia tentacles tend toward shades of brown, russet, emerald green, and deep blue, with coral tones on the suckered underside.
Cecaelias generally get along well with humans, as both races share the experience of being a relatively short-lived race among much longer-lived peoples. Cecaelias also ally frequently with locathahs, as the fish-people are as social and inquisitive as they are. Cecaelias are proud but don’t hold themselves above other races, reacting with cautious openness when meeting new people. They’re sensitive to condescension, though, and they anger quickly if they suspect someone is talking down to them. Overly flowery language or flattery can likewise insult them; cecaelias respect those who speak plainly, even if what they have to say is unpleasant.

Aurus focuses all of his divine wrath upon the octopuscentaur (smiting), but pauses as the creature doesn't immediately attack them. "CEASE THIS, WITCH! ABSALOM WILL BURN IF YOU DO THIS!"
Diplomacy (Loud): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Cloudia sees Aurus yelling, but has no idea why.
"What's going on?", she asks, though she is not sure you they would tell her without taking time to mime or write something for her to read. So she waits to see if violence commences.

![]() |

This is a cecaelia. Usually, overly flowery language or flattery can likewise insult them; cecaelias respect those who speak plainly, even if what they have to say is unpleasant.
Says Nemrok recognizing the creature.
Please, we need this tome to stop Hell from invading this place. If you continue, you will unleashed a legion of Hell on Absalom. I'm sure you don't want that.
Nemrok turns to Cloudia and make a sign to wait.

The sound of the angelic chorus is so loud that you need to be next to someone and shout and even then they need to actively try to make out what you are saying (perception DC10). The cecaelia currently seems to enjoy the 'concert' and makes the universal signal to you to be quiet.

...Does anyone have a scroll or oil of Silence? Or am I about to just charge it?

Not sure of what to do, Cloudia uses her wand to cast bless and takes out her wand of magic missile.
Better safe than sorry.
The devils could not touch the book we had so we still have it, right? We could probably get it's attention with the other book.

I think we left it surrounded by devils and just came here, thinking maybe we could try to reclaim it once the main threat was neutralized.

Indeed, the devils have the tome, but as they seem unable to move it, you know they probably still are in the same spot.

Nemrok chimes in Sorry to interrupt this wonderful concert! But I will be blunt. We are in grave danger, Absalom is in grave danger.
The Infernal Legion trapped in the book have starting to be released. If you continue, they will be completely free and will destroy Absalom.
Help us put an end to this menace.

Can I have a really good Diplomacy roll (and some assists?)

Cloudia is unable to assist very well, not being able to follow the conversation, but she got the idea from its posture and swaying that it was listening to something nice. So she pulls out her flute and attempts to set the mood with a tune she is familiar enough with to play deaf.
perform: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24 Probably got some minuses there for being deaf.

Nemrok's words seems quite convincing!
The cecaelia listens to Nemrok's words.
"You must be talking about the other book? This one, the Celestial Song, is completely harmless unless you have very sensitive ears."
The cecaelia smiles, but then his expression changes to stern.
"However the other one, the Infernal Incantation, is very dangerous in the wrong hands! I gave some of my followers a couple of very valuable blades as trade goods to acquire it before something like this would happen!"

![]() |

Unfortunately, your men have not been very understandable about that and assaulted us in their attempt to recover the book.
We were then ambushed by devils and they now guard the Infernal Incantation...
If I may ask, what to you want to achieve with the books/
Says Nemrok

I wanted to experience the Celestial Song and I still want to experience it completely, without being interrupted. The infernal incantation is too dangerous to be in possession of either incompetent or nefarious people.

![]() |

Aurus stands for a second, agog at the smooth way this is going.
"So... it would be very bad for, say, devils to have The Infernal Incantation."

Cloudia looks like the mentally challenged one, standing there with a blank look on her face, staring intently at peoples mouths as she tries to snag a work here or there.

Nemrok speaks anew in common and says We understand your need, but the Infernal matter is of most importance. Devils are poping up in Absalom thanks to the Infernal Incantation.
We can't let that happen.
As agents of the Pathfinder Society, I'm sure we can find an arrangement for both you and the Society that will benefit both. What do you wish, in addition to finish to listen to the tone's melody?

"I currently don't have anything specific and if you can't think of something either I guess something with monetary value should suffice."
