HORROR ON THE HILL - A 5E RE-IMAGINING OF A 80'S CLASSIC TSR MODULE

Game Master Helaman

'The Fort' is a gathering point for settlers, reckless traders and devil may care explorers who do business in the lands outside those covered by the dubious protection of the Emperor. Not surprisingly it is also a gathering place for mercenaries and ne'er do wells... as well as self styled warriors of fortune called 'Adventurers'.

Overshadowing 'The Fort' is 'The Hill'. This mysterious mountain has long been rumored to shelter bands of vicious monsters. It is said that only the turbid waters of the River has formed the boundary that prevented monsters from invading the undergarrisoned fort over the years... but now it may not be enough.

Assuming at least one melee type gets stuck in before Iocundius:

The man stands some yards back from the hobgoblins, having watched others launch themselves at the goblinoids. He nods, approving.

Iocundius stands 5' 9" tall and weighs 155lb, covered in scale mail, a shield, and clutching an iron symbol of Law. He has the dark hair and pale skin of his region, with pronounced and visible cheekbones. His face is gaunt and dark rings lie under his eyes but his dark eyes are focused.

He holds the symbol aloft and calls out in a driven voice:

"Strike down the hobgoblins! Let none escape!"

The symbol glows and three others feel more adept - and one inspired to strike their foe again!

Cast Bless on the first three melee or ranged attackers to post. Voice of Authority on first melee post who has a spare reaction.

Voice of Authority
Starting at 1st level, you can invoke the power of law to drive an ally to attack. If you cast a spell with a spell slot of 1st level or higher and target an ally with the spell, that ally can use their reaction immediately after the spell to make one weapon attack against a creature of your choice that you can see. If the spell targets more than one ally, you choose the ally who can make the attack.

Gaelden took in the scene with an experienced eye. The Goliath towered over the assembled goblinoids, even though he was only about seven feet tall. Short for his people, tall for just about anyone else. But what he ‘lacked’ in height he made up for in sheer brawn. The Goliath strode forward, with hammer in hand. It was his weapon of choice because it didn’t require upkeep. Out in the wilds, swords needed sharpening and could rust. A broken sword was a useless sword. And an axe that saw too much use became blunt, making it into a less effective hammer. But a hammer? That could be used as much as needed, and even if it became worn and dented, it still remained effective.

And as the goblin soon learned, a well-used Hammer was still stronger than bones.

Antal looses an arrow that misses and splits a nearby sapling tree.

Gaeldon smites a goblin to the dust while Aelwulf tries to engage the hobgoblins. One barks an order and they form up around him while one of the goblins moves to attack the Goliath, stepping over his dead friend, with the archers moving into position to attack the same target.

Goblin 3 (Melee) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Goblin 2 (Archer) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

While the slash from the goblin in deadly hand to hand combat smashes into the barbarians shield, the archers are able to send glancing arrows that draw blood.

Aelwulf fights desperately to keep alive...

The archer goblin moves rapidly, feet given wings by fear towards a large group of goblinoids, maybe 30 in all, all moving away from the farm, many of them hugging sacks and small barrels to their chests or balanced on their shoulders. Others lead bleating protesting goats on ropes or hold squawking chickens by their feet. A few, hobgoblins all, watch you tear apart their comrades, hacking them to the ground or using magic to brutally end their lives.

Perception 15:
Among the 30 or so goblinoids are small figures... maybe children

This immediate battle is over. Your hearts start to race slower with the threat in front of you ended while some of you suck in deep breaths.

You remember this farm, that even gave you a place for you and the refugees you led... right there... in that barn that is now well aflame. You can remember the stew that the farmers wife gave you - light on meat, heavy on turnip but good cooking nonetheless. That wife, whose body lies in a pool of drying blood not far from where you stand.

You look over at the foes you dispatched. They are not what some of you would expect. They're poorly equipped. These hobgoblins wear old ring mail or scale mail. Two longswords and a morningstar are ill maintained and showing signs of neglect. The goblin corpses are similar. Their weapons clearly stolen of human make rather than goblin workmanship, their armour crudely refitted human armour.

You lift your gaze to the rough 'tribe' in retreat, now over 200 feet away and lock eyes with the largest of the Hobgoblins. There is an unspoken challenge... and perhaps a question?

If you survive what may come? At least you'll get paid back at 'The Fort'. You have your affidavit of safe conduct from the leader of those refugees. The coin is awaiting you in escrow back with the Baliff.

Your move... Party is out of combat but not all that far from a mixed band of goblinoids off map
