VC - Sydney, Australia

Hi all!

Due to this being a multitable special that moves at a fairly swift pace and has time constraints placed upon it, II'm keen for us all to try to post regularly (aim for once or more per weekday and, at least once on weekends). Whilst adventures can be caught in 'conversation loops' back and forth, I will endeavour to keep things kicking along and get the gist of where a conversation is going and keep us pointed in the right direction.

Work, study, and wild parties in Mexico have a way of getting in the way sometimes and if that is likely please leave a post in advance if you know that you may have limited time/ability to post for a period of time (and when we can expect you back).

On that note, I am posting from Sydney, Australia. Most of you will be posting when I am asleep so when I get up around 0500 odd I usually do the catch up over a coffee and then usually in the afternoon/evening each day.

I will generally roll Initiative (and any other rolls if really required), but not to shaft anyone or railroad them, more in the interest of giving you some sort of outcome to then respond to - I aim to complete a single round of combat within 24 hours.

When in combat, unless a PC has left botting instructions or made arrangement for another player to bot them, I will place any PC that has not posted within the past 24 hours (48 hours on a weekend) on delay.

If a single skill check has been called for, I will accept the PC with the highest skill bonus as the "primary" and all other attempts by PCs for the same check as aiding another.

Please provide the following for your PC:

A little pink-haired gnome comes in, hauling tea! "Hey Shifty, this is Charli Poshkettle. My player is planning to be on a cruise during the first week of Outpost III, but she has asked Bret to bot her. I'll be trying to provide some pre-posted stuff to him for the various missions!"

Stain of the Perplexity:

This is a bonus personal boon that is permanently welded to Charli's character along with being a gnome by Star Daddy fiat. This becomes important because Jinsuls love to cause bleed damage!

Whether you remember the events or not, the Perplexity has seared itself onto your soul. Unless you have another permanently slotted Personal boon, this boon now takes up that slot. When this boon is slotted you gain a +2 divine bonus to all skill checks when influencing or negotiating with evil-aligned creatures. This bonus increases to +4 when influencing demons. When another living creature takes bleed damage while within 15 feet of you, that creature must roll damage dice twice and take the higher damage result.

  • SFS 1-04, Cries from the Drift
  • SFS 1-05, The First Mandate
  • SFS 1-11, The Pursuit of the Scoured Past
  • SFS 1-13, On the Trail of History
  • SFS 1-27, Return to Sender

(She was too high level when SFS 1-34 Heart of the Foe came out.)

Did this character get advanced to second level as a result of the Scoured Stars Veteran boon from 1-99?

No, that honor went to Charli's protege, Trusty Trashbot.

Do you have an up-to-date 'bot me' spoiler -- complete with dice expressions?

Yep. I am updating that now.

    Preferred Starship Positions:

I'm an exceptional Gunner or Captain. I can also fill in as a pilot.

Shifty, I double-checked and realized that Charli already reached Tier 4 Wayfinders with her last game, so I am switching back to Manifold Host again. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Any suggestions on a good small arm that does energy damage?

I am currently considering either a Wave Modulator III or Refraction Perforator Pistol. Neither has what I would consider good range though.

About 10x the number there are in PFS.

The range on those pistols is 30’ and 20’ respectively. At this level, a fair number of the ceilings in SFS are that high.

Are any specific boons called out in this?

Barring called out boons Tolar will probably take the following.

Faction: SS Luwazi Elsebo as always
Personal: Devolved Climb Speed equal to my normal speed.
Ally: Probably Master Hireling set 1.
Social: United Society Second Seeker Luwazi Elsebo
Starship: Defender of the Fleet (Reroll 1s on damage.)
Promotional: I have a character folio.

In Combat Tolar is a Bombard/Blitz soldier who mostly does melee. His primary ranged weapon is a 60ft sonic cone so be careful where you stand.

On a ship he has 20 dex and full BAB so he fires weapons.

I will have T'kai updated by tomorrow night.

So in terms of ship abilities.

Jerris is probably our best pilot at +22 but his computers and engineering are a respectable +17. He is tied with Tolar for firing guns.

T'kai is 2 levels higher then shown so piloting is presumably +20/21
s/he would be a good Magic Officer as well.

Neon Ten would do well as science officer or engineer.

Charli Poshkettle seems to be the clear choice for captain.

I recommend T'kai as pilot, Charli Poshkettle as captain, Neon Ten as engineer, Neon Ten or Jerris as science officer until we learn about the enemies then Jerris fires a gun. Tolar will shoot things.

Our missing player is a Mystic which probably won't effect the roles much unless they are a better pilot then T'kai or pushed pretty hard on Computers or Engineering. Magic Officer maybe.

While the scenario might make our choice for us, We should discuss which ship we want to use.

Maverick takes off his aviator shades and looks Tolar in the eye. "You should know me better than that Tolar. Wasn't it just a month ago that we foiled Datch's attempt at infiltrating Guidance's mainframe. When it's time to fly a starship; I don't sit in the back seat."

With some searching, I found Id-Sinitis’s character sheet. They are also an Ace Pilot Star Shaman mystic.

In general I like the higher speed and maneuverability of the Pegasus over the firepower of the Drake. I also like the turret guns on the Pegasus over the missiles of the Drake. That said, I try to replace the Pegasus Laser Net with some other weapon if there is a boon open to do so — I just have not found Laser Nets to be worthwhile.

I am fine with Neon Ten swapping between Science Officer and Engineer as required. If we are to fill both positions, that means Jerris has to come in for the second position. I don’t think we have anyone else with enough Computer or Engineering skill to make the checks. A Magic Officer could take on the scanning, but you usually don’t do that after the first or second rounds of space combat.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing a Pilot is that T’Kai is the only one with the Sky Jockey feat. Gives the ship a little extra speed. Looks like he has a slightly lower Piloting skill than Id-Sinitis though.

Charli is by far the best captain we have. I know she usually does Gunnery, but in this case we have plenty of people who are as good or better at it than her.

I'm good with Pilot +21; Gunnery +15 (+17 with Gate of Twelve Suns Veteran), Magic Officer +19, or Science Officer +18.

I don't have a preference on ship. I don't have any boons to swap out the Laser Net.

I prefer to fly the Drake for its superior fire power and Maverick can make up for it's lack of maneuverability with his piloting skills. If you want to boost our engines on the Drake I can slot the starship boon Runedrive Rewrite. If we go Pegasus and want to get rid of the laser net I can replace it with a tactical nuclear missile launcher by slotting Weapons of a Lost Civilzation. I also have the starship boon Drift Maven

@Maverick Ah so that's what you look like. Discord does have some drawbacks. Since we didn't have to fly the ship in combat you can hardly blame Tolar for not knowing you would insist on being the pilot.

Re: The ship. I was amused the first time I played a ship scenario online because locally everyone was convinced the faster ship was better but my online table was split down the middle and both sides were utterly convinced that the other ship was garbage.

The latest guide seems to be missing the ships but Tolar is happy firing the biggest gun he can. Nukes count. No actual preference on the ship but the blurb suggests Jinsul involvement so be prepared for battle.

Nukes are dependent on a limited use boon, Weapons of a Lost Civilization which it looks like Maverick has slotted.

The starships can be downloaded from this page. See the link to Starships Guide in downloads. Yes, we would be using the Tier 10 ship.

He might change his mind on what boon to slot.

AC and shield strength seem similar. Both have a 10d6 forward weapon.

    Drake
    Speed 8, maneuver 2

Turret is a 10d10 missile launcher (Ammo unknown) and a forward facing weapon 5d10

+3 to any 3 checks and +2 to computers.

    Pegasus
    Speed 10 maneuver 1

    Turret of 8d6

    +5 to any 2 checks +4 computers +1 piloting.

So 6 of us. 1 captain, 1 pilot, Probably 1 full time engineer, 1 science officers that will switch to weapons, and 2 full time gunners.

10d10 is a bigger bang then 8d6. But depending on how much damage those nukes do we may get 3 good weapons either way making the speed and accuracy of the Pegasus a better bet.

I've done quite a bit of starship combat and what has worked in my experience is to get the get the ship with the biggest guns and fire as many of them as you can each round until the enemy ship is disabled. The best way to do it is to have our most skilled gunner broadside as often as possible. Depending on what boons we need I might or might not slot Weapons of a Lost Civilization.

I like the Pegasus, but will go with group consensus. Either ship is good.

    GM:
Shifty, can you post all the missions? We have only 2 days to go through them all.

    Thanks!

So, speaking of broadsides here are the stats:

Drake (forward arc and turret): 10d6, 5d10,10d10, 3d6

Pegasus (forward arc and turret): 10d6, 8d6

Usually you broadside with the weapons in those two arcs. This is why I usually prefer the Drake. The Drake has two missile launchers that are 5 shots each in its forward and turret arcs and two energy weapons, while the Pegaus is all energy weapons. However, I do have a boon that would raise our missile capacity for each launcher to 7 each.

How much damage do the nukes do?

I'm not adamant on either choice but since we are at war with the Jinsul it makes since to bring the warship.

Though not the Gorgan. Even a bit of extra shielding won't account for the slow speed and horribad bonuses.

Hmmph. I do agree that the Drake wins on Broadsides. So who is pilot and who is lead gunner? Let's settle this now.

Nukes do 5d10, 10d10 on the Drake.

For RP sake I always play Maverick where he insists on being the pilot since that is what this character is all about, but if the group wants someone else to be the pilot I'd say lets just RP that into our game. Maverick can be a very good gunner too. Whatever we do our pilot will have to know what our strategy is. If we are using the Drake it's a simple task of keeping us in range with all our weapons and facing toward the enemies most damaged quadrant. If we are using the Pegasus you really have to know what you're doing because you are going to need to probably use all the different pilot actions like Flyby to make up for the firepower disadvantage.

With so many good pilots and gunners we can take turns piloting and firing the guns. That way we can broadside every round and one PC doesn't have to use up all his resolve points.

    VC - Sydney, Australia

Hi all and welcome to the special!

By way of current affairs, la week and a half ago (Friday) I packed up the last truck and we stood down from Operation Bushfire Assist which was the Australian Defence Force response to the Bushfire (and subsequent flood!) crisis across a chunk of our country.

I finally had 'a weekend of rest' ahead of me, but on the Saturday night I was called back and re-deployed back into another Operation. I am now on the response to COVID-19 and getting hammered in the spinning up of a bajillion activities we need to do for that. Whilst I may miss my usual posting time occasionally, I will at least be remaining in an urban environment this time (instead of a tent in the wilds where infrastructure is burnt) so will just be running a few hours behind.

Shifty, I can believe that. I think it will save you time to just post all the preparation missions now, and then we can roleplay / react to each one.

    Thanks for helping fight COVID-19.

Hey Shifty, I'm seconding everyone's thoughts. Keep safe and healthy!

    Backup GM to GM:
I posted the remaining missions for everyone to interact, and I'll tab the results when they come in, but won't start up the next part unless I hear something from you or organizers.

We'll try and keep you backed up on the game and hopefully do more good than harm!
